My first (and favorite) game in the series was Mega Man 5. I didn't play the first one until I was in high school around 2008-9 when I bought the Anniversary Collection on Gamecube. Ice Man's stage nearly drove me catatonic in frustration. Good job on this one, boss man. I'd really like you to beat the others.
18:05 Eventually there was a sort of retcon explanation that the term "robot master" is supposed to refer to the boss robots being able to control the normal enemy robots. The implication (I think) is supposed to be that the normal enemies are mostly preexisting robots not originally meant for combat. And in this game Wily didn't even make the robot masters either, so he really is a fraud. What did the robot penguins do before being taken over? Not clear. God I LOVE mega man lore. Unironically. GOd
Also important to note that Robot Master was a creation for the localization. They're just referred to as Light/Wily/etc Numbers, along with other more generic terms, in Japanese.
this video has caused me to learn the horrifying fact that modern releases of Captain N no longer have 'highway to the danger zone' in the megaman episode. truly, all is lost.
speaking of blind-buying games back in the olden days, I used to only buy used SNES carts (without box or manual) because they only cost 5 euro (this was after the n64 was out, mind you) and so I only had the little graphic on the cart itself with the logo to go off of. Managed to snag some real hitters still: street fighter 2 and actraiser stand out most in memory. The one time I bought a new game in a box it was kirby's ghost trap because one of the images on the back led me to believe it was a fighting game... (still a great game though, another win for blind-buying!)
Aww yeah, now we're talking. That's the stuff. It's easy to tell you grew up with this game. Well played, SGF. Man I forgot how screwed up both the story and the freaking gameplay tips are in the English manual. 1:10:24 They are not in fact making that up, Sniper Joes are based on Proto Man. In the lore he actually hates them for that reason (As seen in Mega Man Powered Up).
I was going to make a joke about the series introducing new characters like Man Man until i realized that Man Man is just Dr Wily. Flush his antidepressants down the toilet, Mega Man! That and his severe shellfish allergy are his only weaknesses!
What are the small solid-colored pellets the enemies drop? It's not health, it's not weapon power and it doesn't increase the score. The manual doesn't mention anything about them either.
@@ThePageofRage Oooh, thank you! edit: Upon watching it closer, I now realize I would have spotted it myself if I had been playing more attention. Oops.
One million bits, if I'm remembering right, would be 125,000 bytes. Which is about 122 kilobytes. Mega Man 1 was apparently 78KB, so it was not, in fact, one million bits.
My "wish I had more critical thinking" moment was with Final Fantasy "II" for the SNES. I didn't understand the concept of gaining levels OR equipping gear, so I just blew through the early part of the game on low levels with starting equipment. I actually couldn't beat, of all things, the Gargoyle during the Fabul siege segment; without the girls to heal I couldn't outlast him. Honestly, I don't think I "got" RPGs until Final Fantasy III/VI
I quite like retro friend. I'm glad you are back retro friend.
Really love seeing SGF play and talk about games that he's really familiar with, always my fav!
"You have a choice of men? That's probably good!"
SGF is such a gamer. Completely obliterated Mega Man in like 40 minutes.

In the grim darkness of the future, there is only everlasting peace.

truly, all is lost.
It's nice to see this quaint little piece to remind you of the humble beginnings of everyone's favorite DOS game
So fun to see this, and you're still really good at this game!
Oh hell yes RETRO FRIEND!
Retro Friend is awesome! Mega Man classic was a great choice SGF, thank you 🤍
A lot of very good band name options in the enemy lists.

Oh heck yeah! Just what I needed tonight! 🥳
I find it funny that the manual is confused about if we're dealing with human-like robots or robot-like humanoids.
SGF is the best creator on TH-cam
I think you mean video uploadin’ guy

this was a great one, for sure
Whew, I forgot how crunchy the hit sounds are in this game

15:05 - I'm guessing that's what Shovel Knights 'useless' duck mechanic is a reference to.

It gives you 1000 points for every one you collect, only cashed in at the end of the stage along with the bonus for completing the stage!

Hey Megaman, you're a little low on air!

The good old days! 😭😭
08:03 Not that you’d know it from the box art of the first and second games if you were in the States, of course.
Garth Marenghi used to ghost write Capcom Manuals, I assume.
I feel like SGF might enjoy The Megas and/or The Protomen. I'd love to see him play through MM2 & 3 which are my favourites.
what
meag man this weather is too hot my buns are frying
i blame the o-zone layer
i'm going to escape the oppression
He's Megaman, not Duckman.
Gabyoall Screen (ps1)
It's not as good as the PC version, but it'll do
I can't tell if sgf is saying "Dr. Wiwy" or "Wily" - but I choose the believe that SGF is doing an uwu
