The Melk Abbey complex is one of the biggest and most beautiful European Baroque ensembles. This colossal and wonderful monument with its 320 metres is the Symbol of the Wachau - a popular wine region in Austria - impressive and seen from far distance sitting up on a hill overlooking the vineyards and Danube river.
This baroque jewel of Austria was built in the first half of the 18th century. Benedictine monks still live here and dedicate their work to culture and education. The centrepiece of the Baroque Melk Abbey complex is its Abbey Church, or Stiftskirche. There are many guided tours to see the inside- where it is not allowed to film. However, the atmosphere in and around this complexe is so beautiful, too and gives you a chance to get a glimpse of this baroque beauty!

Yes, there are 22 monks living there. They live partly in the monastery and partly in the parishes belonging to the monastery.
