In this video I explain how a regulator-rectifier works in a motorcycle using basic terms/ideas that I hope everyone can understand.
Three topics you should understand by the end of this video are:
    1. How alternating current from the stator is rectified into direct current to charge the battery.
    2. How current from the stator is regulated to ensure that the voltage at the battery does not exceed about 16 volts.
    3. How charge is prevented from leaking from the battery through the regulator rectifier.
I will explain in a separate follow on video how to test that your regulator-rectifier works properly.
I would suggest that you also watch my other video explaining how the stator and rotor work together to form the alternator which generates the current that flows through the regulator/rectifier.

First time I've understood how these work. They are more complex than I realized and your explanation was easy to follow and very helpful! Thanks for putting time and energy into making this.

Man you are Great, The way you explain makes it a lot easier to understand. Not only that, the way you speak English makes it very easy for me to learn English as well. At first i thought you know nothing like other beginners on youtube but i was thinking wrong. Its your style of speaking that impressed me to give my regards through these comments. I really like your videos and hope that my comments wont leave no difference in upcoming videos. Just be the way your are. God bless you.
JFYI, little pauses you do when speaking are exactly at very correct places in a whole dialog. I dont know how other people think of that but for me i sure like that. Thank you so much.

My 1972 350cc R5 Yamaha rectifier and regulator are two separate devices. The rectifier has the cooling fins. The rectifier is also grounded to the MC frame. The regulator appears to be connected to the rectifier. The Stator rotor has 3 wires going to the Rectifier, 2 wires going to the coil and 2 wires going to the regulator. The one wire...the regulated voltage wire branches to all of the devices and the second wire out of the voltage regulator feeds the rectifier which in turn feeds the battery and ignition switch.
BOY this gets complicated quickly BUT I am determined to figure it out!

My lights and indicators have started flickering could my regulator be failing any help would be much appreciated.

Excellent video. If main beam (dipped/full) isn't working but everything else is and starts no problem, would the regulator rectifier or stator be a potential failure?

My question, is there are auto cut off features in the regulator? So that when the battery is fully charged the current would be cutoff from the battery? Wouldn't that cause overcharging

Thank you for the explanation. Any idea what it means when the voltage across the battery drops when revved? The alternator seems to be working since the voltage increases to over 14 volts on idle.

If its dropping voltage below the battery voltage (less than 12.6 volts) when revved then problem with charging system, most likely regulator rectifier

Can a bad regulator rectifier cause the bike not to send power to starter. I replaced my main fuses everything. I hit the button nothing happens. Take a screwdriver across the solenoid still nothing. Checked the solenoid I have power to it, have power to igntion switch. The bike was starting now it's not doing anything. Even if the starter didn't work when I cross the solenoid with a screw driver it should still spark right.

Hello, did you find your problem with this? Im currently having the same issue with my bike

    • @Aciecarter238

@@vasiledintrebile2308 it was the ground wire off the battery. I made a new one an it worked. So now I have 2 grounds off the battery. An I replaced all the glass fuses. Remember to get agx fuses

Hello sir..my ninja 400r charging system is acting funny..mechanic says battery is OK and looks problem in rectifier or magnetic coil or both. Can u guide me since you have so much experience..my bike won't start after a ride on a full charge battery and make computer electronic type sound while I start it after off. I have the video of this issue and can show you..let me know..thanks

Yes you can share video on my Facebook page. Link to it on TH-cam main page. Take a look at this video you commented on to determine if regulator rectifier is working. I also have a video on diagnosing battery related issues. Battery issues can actually be quiet complex as some batteries can exhibit signs of normality even though they are bad.

I think you had a few beeers bofore making this video, however I am guilty for doing the same thing. Explination was good but i,m not sure if I can remember it tomorrow. So it stops to much charge current from reaching the batery and dumps it in the frame.

😂 Yes in a nutshell you have the idea. It also converts ac to dc current 👍

@@TheMotorcycleMuse yes of cource , i did watch your video from start to finish. I have an MT 01, and am renovating a 1985, vf750 f, , problem was i wasn't ever quite sure what the rectifier ever did. Thanks to you I do.
