It´s about Jarvis´ mother, who lived as a hippie, when she was young. No worries, just love and travelling. But then she got a baby - Jarvis, and suddenly she had to care about somebody else, the worries came etc. I love the part of the chorus "There´s a hole in your heard and one between your legs." Brilliant :)
Wow. I remember watching this on TV at the time. It's made me think, we have so many more channels now, and so many more music channels, yet your chances of seeing anything new and alternative as this was at the time have actually decreased.
Right you are. If memory serves me correctly JC found a photo of his mum when she was pregnant and heard the story of how she gave up art to be a mother. And there's also that deadbeat dad, but save for next bedtime.
Kind of unsettling lyrics, yes (do a search on "pulp little girl with blue eyes" and you'll find them at mp3 lyrics) that have the feel of a Scott Walker song.
I feel the need to comment on here to say that; A this song is ace and Jarv is a legend, and B Jarvis Cockers dad is not Joe Cocker, although his dad did know Joe and in fact he used to babysit Jarv. Jarv's dad fucked off to Australia when he was 7 and carried on the pretence that he was in fact Joe Cocker's brother. This isn't true either. Jarv's dad got in touch with the News Of The World after Different Class with the usual sob story about wanting to get in touch and Jarv visited him in Oz.
It's on the "Countdown" double CD - Excellent trip through their pre-island back catalogue With a really good synopsis in the inlay. Worth getting hold of. It's expensive on Amazon but there are quite a few well priced (sub six quid) copies floating around on Ebay.
This song was first released as just a single in 1985, then later made its way on to various compilations, Masters of the Universe and Countdown for examples.
hööy, how about a re- release? Pulp could have released so many songs as singles these days that were then just disregarded.. :( I mean how many people know these wonderful songs?
It’s actually about JC finding a photo of his parents wedding and to an extent his mother becoming pregnant with him at a very young age and subsequently being deserted by his father. Although the girl in the song isn’t her, just inspired by her.

my favorite pulp song
This song was first released as just a single in 1985, then later made its way on to various compilations, Masters of the Universe and Countdown for examples.
Pure genius!
Missed this performance first time 'round, awesome stuff...
Best pulp song ever.
Naughty & genius!!!
Their early stuff from 80s was better than their later stuff.
White room introduced me to cool music i;e portishead tricky and others great stuff thnx.
love Pulp, so damn good
Great lyrics
Love the baby doll crying, very cool...what else would you expect from Jarvis and co? I think I'M the Little Girl with Blue Eyes...
So you want lyrics that stick to bland, happy and normal things? People who like that sort of stuff are twisted in my opinion.
love pulp, dont know what this song is about but its eerie... especially the bit wer the dolls crying.. what album is this off?? or is it a b-side??
Russell Page
Correct :-)
Genre: Creepo New Wave Garage Rock

So there you go, to the annoyance of Jarv's dad, Joe Cocker is no relation.
