Excellent points! It looks like college hasn't changed since I went in the 80's. Mr. Wesch has it right, students need to be engaged, not talked at,memorizing, all the information is available online, they need to learn the process, critical thinking, taking it to the real world. Really great speech! I was so prepared for this to be dry and it so wasn't!
Synopsis Not a one way conversation, not just critical thinking by the individual... we need organized action for hugs, environmental action, monitoring free elections, crisis management. Students learn what they do, not what they are told. Collective ACTION is technologically difficult to initiate. How do we make students knowledge-able? How can we support them to: Embrace real problems Work together Use relevant tools Meaning isn't something you FIND - something you CREATE. Thanks Micheal.
Great support for the TIEL Curriculum Design Wheel (Teaching for Intellectual and Emotional Learning). Process, process, process--but not without content planned by a knowledgeable and skilled teacher in content, process, and product.
Criticize him all you want, but as a contemporary, he's hitting on some seriously important issues and attempting to solve them. His solution may not be perfect to the t, but it's a step in the right direction and I applaud him for pointing all of this out.
TED stands for Technology, Entertainment and Design -- though TED has long since transcended that theme to be about "ideas worth spreading" from the world's greatest thinkers and doers etc. TEDx (the "x") stands for independently organized events like TEDxKC (for Kansas City).
I like the fact that you said "we have half the world living on two dollars per day." Because that's what it really seems like for the middle class. The fact that you compared an America Idol show with a lecture classroom entails that people have became much more interest with watching then finding. In my opinion we are going to have to change to way we communicate with people using the media. Thanks, Michael.
Yeah, that was the Internet I grew up with (2001-2010). Ultra creative, no rules, smart. It has become streamlined now. The other layers of course still exist but they’re the minority. And you have to find it.
Curtin University this is where education needs to be, and our university should be the one to innovate the way for learning and education. It's easy for me to say this, and anyone can suggest it. I know what needs to be done, and how it should be done. Lets make Curtin the university of technology once again! :)
Before examining the question of making students knowledge-able or knowledgeable, one need to ask something more fundamental questions. What makes students want to be knowledge-able or knowledgeable? And what makes students want to be "made" knowledge-able or knowledgeable by you (or whoever)? Education is two way, or it will be force-fed.
Whats that old saying, youth is wasted on the young. don't shoot me but you will likely come to find in later years that the learning experience can be and IS exciting. Rather than sitting there taking up space, listen, think, question, research on you own. It may not be easy but there will come a time when you will look back. You want to do so knowing that you lived the experience not just 'suffered' it. Life is a learning experience. Take advantage of it..........
such an inspiring speech. I wish only one of my school teachers would have thought to teach us this instead of religion :-/ I really envy students these days although its never late.
