Little known fact: Abdulhamid was the founder of the first modern intenational intelligence agency, Yıldız Teşkilatı. It both threatened and inspired UK so much so that when they invaded Istanbul after First World War, first place the English occupants raided was Yıldız Sarayı, headquarters of the agency. He was terrifyingly well informed of the events in Europe during his reign thanks to that agency and sometimes he could stir trouble for English even in Ireland due to this influence. As a side note, Sultan personally financed one of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes books! He liked those stories so much that he would write to the author and share his thoughts about the novels.

Young Turks committed genocide put an end to more than two thousand years of Armenian civilization in eastern Anatolia. Together with the mass murder and expulsion of Assyrian/Syriac and Greek Orthodox Christians, it enabled the creation of an ethnonationalist Turkish state, the Republic of Turkey. The Turkish government maintains that the deportation of Armenians was a legitimate action that cannot be described as genocide.
