Why Abarth Cant Make A 200BHP Stock 595.. For Now..

  • Abarth 595's have been running the same 1.4 turbocharged engine for a while now and whilst 200 BHP does not sound like a lot of power its a power figure that many Abarth owners have questioned as to why a standard car is not being produced with it. The reality is that without significant R&D and a new engine and thanks to emissions laws Abarth are currently tied. Now this doesn't mean that we wont ever see an Abarth 595 running stock power of over 200 BHP but i think we will have to wait a while for that to happen. We all know that modifying cars like the Abarth 595 Essesse or competizione will easily deliver power of over 200 bhp and run safely but it will breach emissions regulations. Here are my thoughts on it all.

Here in the States we only got the 1.4T MultiAir, no T-Jets. Depending on the car, we got different power configurations.
    500 Turbo (non-Abarth): 135hp/150lb
    500 Abarth Automatic: 157hp/183lb
    500 Abarth Manual: 160hp/170lb
    500x & 500L: 160hp/184lb
    124 (non-Abarth): 160hp/184lb
    124 Abarth: 164hp/184lb
While the numbers seemed small, a lot of us were upset that the 500 Abarth MT was shorted 10lbs of torque compared to the rest of the FIAT range. Without any physical mods, and using piggyback systems or tunes, we have also reliably gotten 200hp+ out of the 1.4T MultiAir blocks. Combine that without any special editions, we felt like we were getting the short stick from "Abarth" (aka MOPAR engineers in Abarth hats).
I know we have less restrictions on petrol/gasoline than you guys (at least it seems that way) and legal allowances for aftermarket mods vary state to state. I'm in Las Vegas, so for me it's just an ODBII scan for codes and that's it. My neighbors in California have a visual inspection along with OBDII scans. In Massachusetts it's a multipoint vehicle inspection. So, depending on where you live, you might have to rip off all visually noticeable mods.
However, doesn't matter which side of the pond you are on, you're not going to see anymore development on either of the 1.4 blocks because the 1.3T Firefly is what is going to replace the 1.4 T-Jet & MultiAir. The 500X with the 1.3T is putting out 177hp/210lbs. I'd gladly take that extra 40lbs in a 500 Abarth.... Oh wait, no more 500 in North America :(

After watching Your reviews at the beginning of 2019 I wanted to buy a ESSESSE so badly...but the seats won’t fit my back 195cm/112kg 🤪
So in July endet up with getting a Rivale 695 with seats that fit me. Like I mentioned earlier it puts a smile on my face ever since the first day...
This coming summer 2020 will get either 200 or 230hp into it but if I’d go with 230 I’d also need the mechanical differential (6800.-€ more) have to think about that one...
I think like You said Stefan it’s a awesome platform and yes it makes You feel like a hooligan but in a good way. 6 gear well I’m driving it on landscape roads (lots of curves) not Autobahn or highway so basically fine with 5.
Let’s see what the future brings...hope to see You all in Milano maybe 2020 be good and have a happy new year 🎊

6th gear is the thing that is the most important... Let us tinker and put our own R&D into pushing the power. That is one of the things everyone in the community loves. What I enjoyed the most on the Abarth Days 2019 was to see literally a 1000 same cars, but not 2 exactly the same - everyone adds their ow special sauce and personality tho their Abarth from a sticker to an extra 100 BHP...
Most of the very successful cars in history were tunable. If they squeeze everything from the engine from the get go, the stickers are the only thing we are left of with...

I have a 2018 Pista (Euro 6). No mods. And I can assure you that it bangs when going from 3rd to 4th. Just rev it to 3500-4000 and then change... BANG! No pops and bangs on idle or when lifting gas... but that last Euro 6 Batch, before the Euro6D one, still offered some bang for the price.

The 695 Biposto is to me the most beautiful Abarth ever made, even if I own a 595 Competizione 70° Anniversary myself and before this, I owned a 595 Trofeo / Pista. I really the new model as well, 695 70° Anniversario, that lovely 595 EsseEsse, etc... But when it comes to talk about the 695 Biposto, that is a really special car and that is why we all love it in the community. It is like a beautiful lady you can't afford, but you can dream of her, of course. Regards from Belgium, keep on the good work dear Stef.

Interesting video Stef, I fancy an Abarth at some point, I used to prefer the Cooper S but it isn’t really that Mini anymore. Having driven the wife’s Fiat 500 lounge, I love it and wish she’d got an Abarth! You’re right they are concentrating on what really sells. Can’t afford to do what Mini did and change the whole platform, meaning they could ditch the horrible 1.6 PSA engine in the Cooper S and whack a 2.0 BMW engine in it. Don’t want PSA, the engines are pants, I had a 207 GTi, the camshaft pulley is held (or not in my case) in place by the friction from one centre bolt with no key way! I wouldn’t be too worried about having an Abarth remapped myself.

I think the PSA merge might save the 500 and varients of small abart platform as they have a 1.2 3 pot turbo cable of 150 bhp in stock form this with a map and a few bits and that crucial 6th gear may make it the economics choice for the hot hatch, fait/abarth with the PSA merger need to capitalize on something no one else is and that is these are convenient cheap to run fast cars mini is going the wrong way by making the cars and the engines bigger, food for thought...
    Great vid keep it up!

Amazing Fiat 595 Abarth! This car is so amazing that it does not need to have 200 hp to have fun! And, by the way, next year we will have Euro 7, so every automaker should switch to hybrids or electric cars in order to comply with the regulations and be able to produce quick and fast cars.

Hello Stefan! 2020 Abarth will release a John Player (black & gold) and (another) Yamaha Monster Abarth Edition. Also they are currently working on a 5-door Abarth (which will be released in 2-3 years) and we can expect to see a full electric Abarth in around 5-6 years. This information was given to our Abarth Club by the FCA Country Manager himself and he also pointed out that they dont have any plans at all to stop the production of Abarths.

Bongiorno stef! Just watched your 200bhp story, well I don't think things will change much, the 500 has basically stayed the same since 2009 apart from a face-lift, power options, editons, trim levels, extras etc it's still basically the same car, I think it's their
"if it ain't broke don't fix it" policy also I think the merge with psa won't help unless mabe they decide to put one of there engines in the Abarth, if it will fit lol , also they are already pulling the 500 range out of the USA and and I hear fiat will be concentrating on bigger cars in the future so the only all new 500 will be electric only but the existing petrol versions including the abarth will be still available in the future and I believe the panda and punto'a days are numbered aswell so it doesn't bowed well for small Italian cars what with the 500 large and x and with everything going hybrid or fully electric aswell, there's an old Italian saying "the Italian peoples love for small Italian cars" as we know this is so true for many reasons particularly in the Abarths case, I personally think the abarth has enough power as it is, its plenty quick enough for me, if you want more power it's easy from a simple remap to a bigger turbo and injectors like you did with your 595, but I see your point of view and yes it does need a 6th gear I had a punto sporting with, 6speed and I with my Abarth has that gearbox, it mated perfectly with the engine and its power, the abarth gearbox is too tall and loses power through the gears also you can really miss gears like I could in the punto! And the end of the day the 500 abarth is an awesome little car and with its power to weight ratio which is its nemesis, it feels like a much more powerful car because of that so all is not lost, nothing comes close to an Abarth In that respect and as we know life's far too short not to have one in our life.... Hope my comments are useful sorry if I've waffled on too much, all the best in 2020...👍😉

@@2Skills4u As mentioned, I never ever had any serious issues with my Alfas over the past 30 years of ownership. But I do take care of them, yes. The Giulia Q is a completely different product to any of my previous Alfas. The Giorgio platform has been developed based on the design philosophy of operability, maintainability and survivability. Considering the constraints of the project, Alfa has met its main objective which was to create a package that is competitive against equivalent proposals from other manufacturers in this segment. The car is not cheap to run but one cannot expect this from such a product in this segment.
I service it according to the factory requirements and recommendations and that implies that it goes into the service shop once a year for all checks, oil change, etc.
Neither the C63S AMG nor the M3/M4 cars are cheap, nor more reliable. I have friends who run these cars and there is no black and white as ownership, styles of driving nd areas may differ considerably.
My car is brand new out of the production line at the Cassino plant in September 2017 but first put on the road in April 2018 as I did not wish to run it first time in the winter months after delivery. I live in Europe. Since then, the engine has covered 16,000 miles which dependent on what part of the world you come from may not seem that much. I drive it every day to work as a daily driver to commute to work and for pleasure trips in the weekends. Once a year, it gets the chance to drive on a long journey to Italy where I push the car. During the 16,000 miles, it has had two oil changes and no other engine, drive train or else needed change or repair. I'd say that the engine is about done with the breaking in period. The car behaves and feels as good today as it was when I took delivery of it.
For the sake of it; the most miles I have ever covered in my other Alfas without the need for restoration of the engine is 200,000 miles. This was on my Alfa 147. I have owned 7 different Alfa Romeo models and I can assure you that the Giulia Quadrifoglio is the best by far. The car is just as reliable if not better than any other cars I have driven or owned including German equivalents.

Not sure if others have said this, maybe Abarth 595 should focus on making the car lighter if they can't get more than 190BHP. Advertise it as spartan and deliberately non-technology focused hahaha. I love my comp. No mods as yet, but eventually I will. But for where I live the power to fun ratio is just right!

The 1.4 Multiair blocks used and made by FCA US were already equipping the Dodge Dart, so it only made sense to get them on the american 500s.

Yes it seems odd that only the USA and punto get this engine! Other than chrysler using it in their own cars so it makes sense to them for the US spec 500, The tjet is more robust and reliable, the mutiair needs specific oil and frequent changes or you could wreck the head, the tjet is a strong useful engine and has been around for along time, the power output is no Iess than the mulitair engine in the 500but more in the punto ,think its around 175bhp!

    • @markahomer
      @markahomer 4 ปีที่แล้ว

@@marinobottali4170 My 2012 APE had 165 bhp stock (if I recall correctly) although I believe some were dyno-ing more. An Essesse dealer upgrate was available taking it to 180 bhp. I think the last run of APEs came with 180 bhp out of the factory. I recall the forums exposing the odd early MultAir head failure but I don't believe it was widespread - espicially as the unit was widely used in the Fiat line up. Yes - essential that 'MultiAir' oil used or long term head/valve failure inevitable.
They were sticking the 135 bhp MultiAir in the Fiat Punto Evo Sport so why European Abarth 500s got the Tjet remains an enigma.

If it wasn’t for the 500 Fiat would essentially be dead. Abarth are flogging a dead horse with their current range. Just part bin specials to try and eeek a little extra revenue out of a dying model. The 124 could have been special but was priced stupidly for the performance on offer. This inevitably lead to low sales and killed it. I think we are nearing the end of the brand in the next few years, to be feasible the development cycle should have started years ago for an EV Abarth if it were standalone. FCA seem late to the EV game in general. EV also doesn't seem compatible with the currently marketed brand ethos which will have to change. Other manufacturers have released 2-3 entirely new models since the first abarth 500 came on sale. The car has a chassis over 10 years old. Lack of R&D has killed Abarth in general.
