Visually it looks superb, when i first saw Formby do a Fan stroke on the Uke Banjo i was memorised,,,, Tessie O'shea she was so fast on her Gibson.. When you are talking about practicing it Matt i used to use a "Mute" at night, before you know it your there. Great explanation Matt, without any doubt your my favourite player and tutor online
Thanks Matt, this is great. I really like the exercise to develop muscle memory, seems I’ve never been able to get the fingers to work right in the past
First time commenting but I love your videos. Excellent instructions! For some reason I've always intuitively done this strum with my index, middle, ring, then pinky. Trying to relearn it the right way because I think it actually does sound better...
It also makes your hand move in a more intuitive direction for strumming. Leading with the index can bring the index further away from the strings and makes the following up strum more awkward. Leading with the pinky keeps the index close and more efficient.
Thanks Matt, between you, Andrew and James Hill, I've really become confident and passed those null spots in the learning curve over the past year. Being a teacher myself, you have a fantasitc method with your lessons that encourages even the most musically challenged (like myself) to keep pressing on, thanks for your lessons Matt.
Very good lesson! I've been at it for a few days now but damn this is hard to pull of cleanly and even harder to do halfway consistently. Right Hand Pinky is still not used to so much work :D
Thanks for this. I have a question regarding the sweep/raskiado. Do each of the fingers in the roll need to touch each of the strings? For instance does the idex finger strum GCEA and the same for the rest of the fingers. Or do the fingers strum different strings for example index GCEA , Middle CEA, Ring EA and little/pinky finger A. Does the roll need to be timed so that the sound comming off is indivudal to each finger rolling? Or can fingers clash? As I am rolling sometimes the reverberation from the index on the C string, affects when the middle finger starts to roll. What is the sound that is correct practice? And if I reverse it and do an up strum on a raskido for a 10 fingerroll. where the open strings are rolled up how does that work. Also for the up strum do you just soften it and use the pad of the thumb open handed and dont bother provide any backing for the index finger? Ie its less of a crisper sound and softer because of the pads and the loseness of the index finger?
The problem with this is that it moves the hand outward, instead of inward, and can create problems down the road. Starting with the index was originally more intuitive to me, too, but I’m glad I spent the time to develop new muscle memory to get it with the pinky leading.
So cool, I love it!
A ukulele will never sound as a guitar, I love that it has its own character.
Thank you for all the time you spend teaching.

Thanks for another great and motivating lesson !
I've been using this technique for years and I never knew the name. Thank you Matt. BTW, I use this technique so much, it's abuse LOL

p.s. you should tell your spouse/significant other what you’re doing...my wife just accused me of mocking her 😂

Just stumbled across your video, this technique looks so fun! Can't wait to try it out on the uke, thank you!

Thanks for including me in your journey!
This is super useful thank you very much!

Any beginner tips?
Interesting 😌
OK I need to know what that flamenco chord progression at the beginning is!!!
I love using A (2100) to Bbmaj7 (3210)! :)
Are you hitting all strings with each finger
Yep!
how long did it take you to learn this?
Is it ok to start with the pointer finger and end with the pinky? Seems to be more easy for my old body.

@@MattDahlberg thank you for the fast reply - I'll give it a try for some days :-)
❤
Why can’t I do this!?! 😢
Damn it's hard at first
For whatever reason my hand wants to go, pointer finger first and end with pinky… 🤷🏽♂️
