I was commissioned to make a wooden double dog kennel that could serve as an indoor sofa table. The client surfed Pinterest and found a few that they liked and we worked out a design.
I used 1x8 and 2x8 pine to build this project. I ripped down the boards to the necessary width. I did this because I believe you get better lumber by breaking down a larger board than just buying a 1x3 or 1x4. I used 5 2x8s and 11 1x8s, a lot of pocket screws, and 10 pieces 10ft 3/8 rebar.

Yhat came out pretty awesome I"m assuming its for interior use. I don't make much custom cabinetry but i might need to get one of those pocket screw jigs you were using.

I'm currently building one just like this but out of 2x4's to support a 75 Gal turtle tank on the top.
What length Pocket hole screws are you using? I have never used one of these before so I don't want to have to go back and fourth getting the right screws screws.

looks sweet!!my dogs would eat that thing so fast though. had to go with all steel the alcatraz of dog crates and they have been in them now for a year with no damage. one tried for about a day and gave up and the other took one look and said he wasn't wasting his time i guess lol.
Just bought the plans! Gotta get a better saw, didn't realize the ripping lol I'm going to try to convert it to a 3 door kennel. 'well see how that goes lol

@@DaileyWoodworks Cool, will do! Might try to get away with 1x4's though I only have a circular saw, and I can see that being a disaster lol Also, you cut those 1/3's, but on the plans, I see only 2-1/2 used?
You used a sawzall for cutting the rebar. Did you have to use any kind of special blade? Your finished product looks INCREDIBLE! Thank you for this excellent video.

Any recommendations on how to make it sturdy enough to use it as a bench. I have my kennels by my library shelf and would really like to be able to have it as a reading nook for once in awhile!
Hi Robert. You said you used 1x8's for this. I'm trying to figure out how you got to 1x3's for the frame and 1x2's for the doors. Did you rip each 1x8 down to two 2 1/2's wide one 1 1/2 wide? Thanks.

@Robert Sorry to resurrect the comments on this thing. I am about to make one of these this weekend (not to your exact specifications, but similar) I saw your comment about using the dewalt app to space the rebar, but for the life of me I can't figure out how you did it in the app... Did you just take a measurement of the length minus the inch gap or so on each side, then divide by the number of bars you thought necessary? That is the way I would do it, but I wasn't sure if there was a portion of the app that is dedicated to that sort of calculations, maybe in one of the paid areas. Thanks for the help and your product looks great.

How much for the frames already assembled to where I could just screw in the top, bottom, and sides? I don't have enough garage space for all the tools to create this, and I have a small house and two large dogs. This would be great to have working from home.
Hey Robert, sorry for all the questions, I'm painting the stiles prior to final installation. Is it okay to paint the whole stile completely or do I need to leave the glued portion unpainted? Also, I'm going to can't the whole thing with polycrylic as well, when would be a good time to do so? After it is completely built or prior to final installation? Thanks again brother.

Hi Robert. Did you make your assembly table or was that something you purchased. Really like how the kreg clamps lock into the holes.

Do you have blueprints available? This is the exact thing I've been looking for in my home! My dogs are medium sized dogs. One is a puppy so I'll just make a crate divider for her side. There is some other alterations I would do, but could I have a copy of the blueprints?

How much bigger did you cut the base and top all the way around in order to chamfer?

Hi, Would this fit 2 large dogs? I have 1 great dane/lab mix and a german shepard/husky mix and I need to build a kennel they cannot get out of while we are gone. I saw you side the sides are 27" high by 72" long so I wan't sure if I could do something similar to this and not have to little space. Thanks in advance.
My local spot for rebar only comes in 1/2 x 10ft. Will that change my drill measurements a lot or should i look for another material?

Is that yellow sander one that vibrates or one that spins? Or could I use a belt sander? Seems like I need a belt sander for the top for sure?
it's a random orbital sander. so it orbits and vibrates at the same time. It's a very good all-around sander if you don't have one.

I bought the plans online but do you have a better cut list? Rather than the color coded? It’s kind of confusing.
Just curious how you secure the top to the fame of the kennels? Have you ever had any issues with wood expansion and contraction and cracking with the solid tops?

I would like to make something similar to this but i find conflicting ways to measure for my dogs. I have a 80 lb chocolate lab and a 60 lb lab mix. what sizing did you use to build this beautiful piece of art?

I'm putting the rebar into the front frame. All the rebar pieces are set in the bottom, but for the life of me I cannot align them to the top.

I take the top and bottom and clamp them together then mark and drill.. Holes line up perfectly!

Has anyone who made this type of kennel had a problem with a dog chewing at the wood. Especially the wood along the bottom between the rebar. I’m considering just making one that would go over the metal crates.

What do you do if 3/8” rebar isn’t available? All Depots in my area only have 1/2”. Anyone have this problem and good alternatives for the bars?
3/8 Rebar is very common for concrete forms. If you had to use 1/2" nothing is preventing that.

Are sales good on these? I am a Custom Cabinet Maker by trade. Left the business years ago but have a full shop just sitting here and doing odds and ends projects around the house.
Jamey Mikels most of them sell for $500-1500 depending on size.

I use the same Irwin pull saw to quickly, easily, and (most importantly) cleanly) cut sections out of a couple studs in the wall around my tub for custom niches. I'm still surprised at how well it cuts considering how inexpensive it was.
I was wondering.. do you also build the kennels and sell them?. Or is it just a hobby..
