Alright Nerds! Follow me as I build a really cool dog bed / kennel / dog crate in the form of furniture. I'm not lying when I say this project has made me a better woodworker. Some of the things I show you here I'll be using on a ton of woodworking projects in the future. Really excited to show this one to you all! Let's get to work!

Cut list/buy list
---------------Buy (I used pine but any wood would be beautiful):--------
12 - 2x4s (I had extra)
5 - 1x2s (I had extra)
1 - 4x8 sheet 3/4 plywood
1 - 4x8 sheet 5mm plywood
----------------------Cuts:---------------------------
I started by milling all my 2x4s to
1-1/4” x 3” and then the lengths I need for the bars to 1-1/4" x 2" (you don’t have to do the same but will have to adjust some measurements to get similar results)
Bars: (cut a few extra as backups and testers)
***14 @ 1-1/4” x 2” cut @ 9” long
Door:
***3 @ 1-1/4” x 2” cut @ 16-1/8” long(Door bars)
***2 @ 1-1/4” x 2” cut @ 19” long
***2 @ 1-1/4” x 2” cut @ 20-1/8” long
Legs:
***4 @ 1-1/4” x 3” cut @ 29-1/4” long (each with two special cuts)
Special cuts:
(Back legs only) Slot is 1/2” deep, 9-1/4” long, and about 3/16” wide (might take several passes to sneak up to fit the 5mm plywood) starts 5-1/2” up from the bottom of the leg and 1-1/8” in from the backside) (see diagram for dimensions)
Stopped rabbet on back legs start 5-1/2” up from bottom, runs 9-1/4” long and is 1/2” wide. Depth setting should be done with your router (around 5mm or 1/8”)
Side Rails:
***6 @ 1-1/4” x 3” cut @ 31-3/4” long (4 with special cuts)
Special cuts on 4 Rails :
1/2” wide rabbet, runs entire distance of rail at 3/16” deep (5mm plywood)
Front/Rear Rails:
***5 @ 1-1/4” x 3” cut @ 23-1/4” long (2 with special cuts)
Special cuts (on 2 Rear rails ONLY!!!):
1/2” wide rabbet runs entire distance of rail at 3/16” deep (5mm plywood)
1x2:
Top edge banding:
2 @ 5/8” x 1-1/4” cut @ 39” long (long end)
2 @ 5/8” x 1-1/4” cut @ 27” long (long end)
(Definitely measure your carcass for these measurements)
Plywood:
Top:
3/4” plywood cut @ 25-3/4” x 37-3/4”
Bottom:
3/4” plywood cut @ 23-1/4” x 35-1/4”
Side panels:
2 @ 5mm cut @ 9-1/4” x 32-3/4”
1 @ 5mm cut @ 9-1/4” x 24-1/4”

I really like the way you clamp things with your square , Brilliant ! Cheers from Quebec !
Thank you! I appreciate it! Thanks for watching and taking time to comment! Cheers!
Fantastic idea about doing screenshots instead of downloading. Super straightforward. Thank you Ty. 🥰
I kinda whistled myself LOL.
Haha thank you Judy! I appreciate the feedback! I hope others find it helpful.
Awesome build. I love how this can be used for a dog bed/kennel as well as a smaller coffee table or end table. Thanks for your time and have a good one!
Thanks Jacobb! Yeah man, I’m really happy how it came out. Thanks for dropping by!
"...or person kennel, I guess, whichever you prefer."
_That was one hell of a 4th wall break right there..._
Haha I had a look that phrase up! Glad it was an effective joke! Thanks for watching!
Very nice. Build dimensions are awesome. Keep up the good work
Thank you! I really appreciate it!
Excellent video. Well thought out and useful. Making one for a new English Bulldog and hope he doesn’t chew through the wooden bars. Contemplating using copper or other metal albeit they are high and up out of reach. Trying to add a moisture tray for puppy mistakes in the crate. Thank you for your willingness to share your expertise and kindness.
Thank you! Great ideas! Of course, glad it was helpful! I appreciate you watching and taking time to respond! Cheers!
I respect the free plans. Got me sub !
I appreciate that! Thanks for watching!
I dig the screen shot idea!! Just became a new subscriber. Ty for the video!!
Thanks for the feedback and thanks for subbing! More to come!
I don’t know if you noticed but there’s a ghost of an old man standing the corner watching you!
😂😂 there always is!
Thank you so much !!!! I have just found you and AMAZING!!
Of course! Glad it was helpful! Thanks for watching!
Not even done with the video, but I'm loving the direction you're going with the channel. Excellent job! Totally random bit of info that you probably know, but for anyone else: if you know that one side of your lumber is a "crap side", then put that side down on your miter saw (especially if the blade tooth count is low) because it can blow out or chip the wood on the side. Basically put your good face up because it'll be the cleaner cut side. Anyways! You're killing it with your projects, can't wait till the next one. Cheers!
Thanks man! That’s a great point! I’ll have to write some tips down and make a tips n tricks video. Thanks for the beer as well man! Cheers!
I’m only 2:55 into the video but I just have to say that the beard 🧔♂️ is looking excellent! 🤙🤘👊
Haha thanks Tim! Its feeling pretty grizzly right now! My wife gives me crap for it all the time!
Thx for sharing the dimensions in your video!
Of course Wesley! Thanks for the feedback! I seriously appreciate it!
Nice job man. Nice to see your channel growing
Thank you! I appreciate it! Loving the growth and all the support!
Apologies Tyler, I scanned through your cut list on this project and honestly commented BEFORE I watched this particular video because my wife has been wanting one of these. (Had I watched this one before I commented, I would have just complemented you on the work). Anyway, keep up the great work and I'm a fan!!
Haha thank you sir! No problem man, I get ahead of myself all the time, especially when I’m attempting something for my wife lol. Thanks for the compliments, hope you guys have a happy new year!
Lovely job
Thank you! I appreciate you watching!
Great build! Thank you for posting the measurements. I can't wait to get started on this.
I appreciate that! I’ve been getting some great feedback on the measurements. Thanks for watching! Let me know how it turns out!
Dude! We could be friends
Nice build! I'm going to build this for my dog.
Haha I bet you’re right! Thank you! Let me know how it turns out if you do!
Looks fantastic buddy!!
Thank you Charles! Pumped with the results! I appreciate you taking the time!
@@WoodNerds of course, keep up the great work my man.
Thanks brotha! Cheers!
I had that same Harbor Frieght miter saw for many years, and the angles were always off. I finally gave it away and got a Dewalt DWS779. I looked at many saws, and this one ended up being the best value. It cuts dead straight and it can handle wide construction lumber stock. Please have a look at it, or one of its variants.
Dude! I didn’t realize for so long. I thought I was causing the issues. Finally realized it wasn’t cutting straight. I am definitely going with the dewalt. Thank you for your recommendation! I appreciate it!
Love it
Hey thanks Rene! Thanks for the beer money as well! I have you down for a toast on the video I’m working on now! Cheers!!! 🍻
Great work! Awesome video.
Thank you Michael! This was a fun one for sure! Thanks for watching man.
you are the best!
You’re the best haha! Thanks for watching! If you build it let me know!
You’re the best haha! Thanks for watching! If you build it let me know!
What program do you use for your designs? Definitely agree about dimensioning your lumber.
I’ve been using sketchup and really like it! I’m pretty sure it’s free to non commercial users!
@@WoodNerds Thanks. I gave up within 5 mins my first time using it (I didn't have my mouse). I need to try it again.
I use my laptop with it and have become pretty sufficient! My first time was similar though! It helps to watch a tutorial and actually draft what they are drafting. I drafted this build in an afternoon no problem!
Just found your videos, and I'm hooked!! I've been binging on them for several hours and I think I'm going to give this kennel a shot!!
Do you happen to have the plans drawn up on this one (I'm a visual kind of guy). Would gladly purchase them them if you do.
Keep up the great work sir and cheers to you sir!!!
I like your channel and appreciate your style with it. I like the addition to see the materials list and cuts.
Just out of curiosity, how much time is it taking you per build? And that is with videoing it?
When I become employed again, I owe you a few drinks. And I love the idea of not selling and yet having a way of recieving a thank you.
Your doing awesome.
I really appreciate the feedback Tex! Thank you for taking the time. This one took me about a week in the garage a few hours a day, a little longer with video, photos, and editing! The painting/finishing process adds a few extra days as well to allow for each coat to properly cure after application! I appreciate the support man! Cheers!
I just subscribed... You had me when you were talking about how other youtubers charge for plans, it's super annoying!
Could you not have put a wooden plug in the knot holes?
Do u sell these?
Hi! I sold this one! I built it for some family that was wanting one but they seem to normally go for over $500 in my area. A bigger one like this goes for more!
No dog testing the build? My disappointment is immeasurable and my day is ruined. 😂
Haha just this old dog! Seemed pretty cozy to me!
