CHM Revolutionaries: Theranos Founder & CEO Elizabeth Holmes in Conversation with Michael Krasny

  • [Recorded: December 9, 2014]
Elizabeth Holmes believed from an early age that starting her own company would afford her the greatest opportunity to make change in the world. She left Stanford's School of Engineering in 2003, at the age of 19, to found Theranos - a new paradigm of diagnosis designed to detect the onset of disease in time to do something about it, without having to wait for the emergence of physical symptoms. It’s now worth more than $9 billion, with just under 700 employees, and is headquartered in Palo Alto. In addition to being its founder & CEO, she is a named inventor on 98 U.S. and 205 foreign patent applications, of which 19 in the U.S. and 75 abroad have been issued.
Holmes believes that access to real-time, affordable diagnostic information is a basic human right. Theranos is thus on a mission to make actionable health information accessible to people everywhere in the world at the time it matters, enabling early detection and intervention of disease. She has led the creation of a laboratory infrastructure that requires just a few drops of blood to perform up to 70 tests on a single sample. By optimizing the chemistries used and leveraging software, Theranos’ labs can perform these tests faster, cheaper and with much less discomfort, to fundamentally redefine the paradigm of clinical diagnosis.
We’re very pleased to welcome KQED’s Michael Krasny back to our stage to moderate an in-depth conversation with a woman who wants nothing less than to revolutionize the health care system using technology, creativity and innovation.
"In January 2022, a jury found Elizabeth A. Holmes guilty of one count of conspiracy and three counts of wire fraud in connection with a multi-million-dollar scheme to defraud investors in Theranos, Inc."

The silly part of her whole pitch is that while cheaper, less painful and more convenient blood testing would be nice, the basic screening tests for the most prevalent diseases like diabetes and heart disease are already easily accessible and are actually mandated to be covered as preventative care with no out of pocket costs in all health plans. At times she'll talk about supposed blood tests that can catch cancer decades prior to it becoming a threat, which obviously would be great, but her single drop testing idea has nothing to do with developing tests that do anything like that.

Didn't ANYONE think that her "discovery" wasn't something that Quest and Labcorp hadn't considered? It would be a faster and cheaper way to do business for them. But, most of the time, we have to go in and they not only have to draw a vial of blood, but multiple vials. Yet, Theranos could accomplish running 170 tests with one drop of blood. And, the investors FELL for that. Amazing.

They saw an opportunity to make more money off her. The media didn't ask the right questions. Also, the media isn't qualified to even understand basic chemistry, biology and engineering. She would say gibberish and people would fall for it because of lack of basic understanding. Anyone in the STEM field saw right through her bullshit.

One reason could be that she is intelligent and skillful in her way. She knows how to speak with confidence and its very impressive i actually picked up on some mannerisms and it does have an effect on people. Its almost a sublimal effect. Also, she is definitely twisted and its crazy and kuku. The thing is that No one really expects to be lied to so flat out unless u already know the person to be a liar or the context is super obvious like a car salesman. Communication is predicated on the notion that the speaker is being truthful otherwise there is virtually zero reason to speak at all to anyone. Its a social pact that we have amongst ourselves, to be honest. and Elizabeth feels nothing to disregard it completely. Its one thing to lie in the investers office but to go on stage in front of an audience and still lie with conviction is remarkable. Although, she doesnt spout outright lies ever..its more like she bends the truth

I've looked at 15 different interviews with her from this period and in every single one of them the interviewer compared her to Steve Jobs - I think she must have made it a condition of the interview. They are all with fawning sycophants trying to ingratiate themselves with this 'undoubted female genius'. In not one of them does she address technical details, nor is the interviewer remotely qualified.
Judging by their youtube channel it seem she is a typical product of Stanford - a once famous university which has undergone a transformation from 'Science Studies' to 'Gender Studies' in recent years.
