    A large level crossing found near Harlech Station, and overshadowed by Harlech Castle, on the Cambrian Coast Line in Harlech, Gwynedd. It's by quite a margin the most interesting and abstract public highway level crossing on the main line in the area. It has a total of three half barriers, making it one of only three crossings in the UK to have this number of barriers, as there is a stand-alone additional pair of warning lights / wigwags and a half barrier provided for a side road which enters the crossing parallel to and almost right next to the running line, which itself crosses the main road at quite a considerable skew angle. Additional road markings have been painted down at the angled 'T' junction in the crossing itself so that drivers that missed the barrier can perfectly legitimately wait there until it's safe to proceed and no trains are due, unless turning left away from the crossing. It would still be ill-advised to weave around or pass that barrier with the crossing active regardless! The positioning of this third barrier at this entrance, and the fact that it has even been provided, is very peculiar, and it's probably (at least in part) due to a lack of anywhere else to put it that it's placed so far forward. I've provided plenty of cut-aways at the start to showcase the layout here.
    There is a total of seven sets of LED warning lights / wigwags at this level crossing which are scattered about in quite an odd fashion. There's also a total of three alarms here, each is located closest to each of the three half barriers and is rather loud. Each alarm has the odd brackets that seem to be provided at the overwhelming majority of crossings in the region, and as can be heard one of the alarms skips quite a lot and has a fast tone. The level crossing is also protected by Red/white LED drivers' crossing indicators, with floodlights provided to help visibility after dark. The indicator flashing white as seen in the second video indicates the level crossing is working normally and it's safe for the train to proceed, whereas if it's flashing red, it means that either the level crossing has not activated or failed, telling the driver to stop, and if possible proceed with extreme caution. Due to the location of the station, the level crossing is activated manually by southbound trains heading towards Barmouth, Tywyn etc. Harlech Station is one of the main crossing points on this line with trains timetabled to meet here every two hours.
    Two pairs of trains are featured, the first filmed around lunch time and the second filmed around six hours later, and the third train seen in this video was also seen by me just after at Tygwyn and then in Criccieth. Please excuse the wind noise in parts of the video, (no) thanks due to its sort-of coastal location. Up at the castle, the wind is far more intense and relentless!

    The strangest crossing I've ever seen is still in Germany where a railway track goes straight through a roundabout and a few junctions close to it.
    Now I see (ignoring the barriers) some ways to safely hit the sideway without any danger to be caught by the train, yet I do have the feeling that still locking down the entire junction was the best way to go here.

    • @SouthEastLevelCrossings
      @SouthEastLevelCrossings  ปีที่แล้ว

      Indeed. The angle at which the side road meets the main road and the position of the track would confuse drivers and potentially cause trouble if it weren't for that extra barrier, not to mention as sighting for that extra set of lights in the crossing across the track isn't brilliant when emerging. The crossing you mentioned definitely sounds like a very strange and complex set-up!

      There are also at least two crossings here in the US that are on roundabouts, one of which is in Florida and also is where two legs of a wye meet.
      The other one I've filmed and is on the Sandersville Railroad in Sandersville, GA.

    Great video! Funnily enough, I'd just recently filmed one of the gated three-way crossings in my area myself, lol. There definitely ain't many crossings on intersections in the UK, I've noticed, and probably rightfully so.
    Nice to see another video of this one though. Also, looks like the gate mechs there recently got replaced?

    • @SouthEastLevelCrossings
      @SouthEastLevelCrossings  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks! Definitely doesn't seem too much a bad thing given how a lot of people drive over here lol. I believe one of the three barriers (at least looked to have) been replaced fairly-recently.

    We've still got a manned crossing where we live which is surrounded by houses. Pretty sure there are Klaxons on the posts but they don't sound. This would drive me nuts if I lived there. It must surely be the only crossing with open fronted buildings within the barriered off space?

    There's no way the alarms need to be screeching banshees to this extent, even with the wind. Spoils the ambiance of this town. If every lightpost had an alarm (even the one at 6:25 - which I believe you say does NOT have one), then surely they could be a reasonable volume while still ensuring anyone on the tracks gets the hint. Point being, no matter where on the tracks you stand, you could hear an activated alarm.

    • @SouthEastLevelCrossings
      @SouthEastLevelCrossings  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Another two or three alarms really wouldn't go amiss here. I agree. Then this three you here wouldn't have to be quite as loud at all!

    my god did they ever choose the most annoying alarm ever, the North anerican one seems way better, and less intrusive, One of these crossings get put up in a neighbourhood and i bet housing prices drop the closer your house is to it

      It isn’t annoying they are different in most countries, they need a loud and annoying alarm bc it is a public highway
