St. Andrews Junction Level Crossing, Bristol
Date filmed: Sunday the 17th of November 2024
Videos filmed at: 14:11 | 14:39
Route: Severn Beach Line
- Between Avonmouth (AVN) and St. Andrews Road (SAR) Stations
Crossing type: Manually Controlled Barrier crossing (MCB)
Filming location: King Road, Avonmouth (BS11 9BT)
-
N.B. for others wishing to visit this location: A high-court injunction is in force for this access road to the port due to the current climate of events, particularly in lieu of certain protest groups, and the port's security are, as a result, on higher alert than normal. You are perfectly allowed to visit and film here as it is public land (at the very least definitely on the signal box side), but it would be advised you let nearby gate security know that you are here as a rail enthusiast for the level crossing and trains. That way, they will not be likely become suspicious and feel the need to question you only as to check you're not known to them as trouble. Also, do bear in mind the very close proximity to the port entrance if wishing to see the crossing on side the first video was filmed on, and be prepared to cross back over just in case you are asked to (this probably wouldn't be the best idea in the week with a very large amount of HGV traffic passing you, really, due to the narrow footway).
-
A level crossing located right at one of the busy main entrances to the Port of Bristol, near St. Andrews Gate roundabout and around a tight railway curve from Avonmouth Station. It's incredibly busy during the week with industrial traffic, but eerily quiet on bank holidays and weekends. This level crossing with loud alarms is controlled from the signal box located right next to it, which is also where Dock Junction and Avonmouth Station level crossings are controlled from and watched via CCTV. It also has control of the line right the way from the single line from Clifton Down to the end of the line at Severn Beach. Until a few years ago, a huge transporter bridge overshadowed the crossing, but with that now gone, the location feels very open.
The most notable feature of this crossing, which also makes it quite rare, is the barriers here. They are remarkably still British Rail 'Western Region' barriers, twin-arm, wishbone-style barriers which make incredibly satisfying motor noises as they raise and lower, and now only found at a small handful of crossings. Even though one remarkably still rests off of the floor, their overall condition isn't particularly great, and one barrier has also been partially snapped by high-winds as of fairly recent - this same barrier is also missing a 'boom' light. Also rather unusually, 5mph rail-speed signs have been fitted to each entry-side wigwag mast.
The same train is seen twice throughout this video, both before and after it terminated at Severn Beach station. This would be the last train for a good few hours this day due to crew issues, an issue which plagued this day's service on the line and significantly affected the overall service. Nonetheless, I hope you enjoy these two videos I managed to get!

Excellent video and crossing 👍
Nice video at St Andrews junction level crossing in Bristol and brilliant signal boxes and alarms sounds to
Nice!
Omg that barrier on the left 😂
Awesome Videos!
In the first closure, i noticed the barrier on the left is really bent towards the end of it 😂 it also has a bit of a delay compared to the other one. Nice video 👍
That barrier had been broken by the wind at some point, as I had touched upon in the description.
Well I’m early
me too
Great video!
My fav crossing accept Kintbury in Berkshire
My local crossing not expecting to see it
Excellent video and crossing 👍
Nice shots!
Nice video at Avonmouth level crossing in Bristol
Excellent Video!
Nice one!
Nice video! Quite a nice little crossing
I like how it's a mostly 2000s install tbh
Btw it’s not little it’s quite a big crossing
Very nice crossing. Love the alarm. Nice view except for overpass! Nice view down the track. Fab catch. ❤
Excellent video and crossing 👍
Nice video at Avonmouth dock junction level crossing in Bristol and brilliant alarm sounds by the way
Nice! I hear a new YA30! And I'm getting that exact same model of yodalarm tomrorow 😂 (Moflash YA30)
Great Video! Quite like this new alarm combination here! And it looks like we both have filmed this crossing with the new alarm!
Nice video! I was gutted when i found out this had a new alarm a little while back 😂
I never minded it from the start, but I love this alarm at this crossing now I've heard it in person. It suits it so well IMHO
I think my vid told u that
Not the easiest of spots to film. Ona bad day the smell from the recycling plant behind you can be overpowering and there's a continuous stream of dustbin lorries coming and going
I saw this train at Birmingham Moor street but I missed it at Solihull
Lovely crossing & steam train. Nice catches.😊
Great video and catch! I believe the first LEDs started appearing on crossings here in the US back in the 1990s, certainly by the late-90s for sure.
Excellent catches 👍
I love this video and i love the glorious steam train and it's brilliant and a nice video of it on lowering 4 with the whistle as well and have a wonderful and a good time and happy Christmas everyone and have a great day and have a happy new year ok and i will keep watching the level crossing and the trains ok 🙂🙂🙂❤❤❤❤🎅🎅🎅🎅🚂🚂🚂🚄🚄🚄🚅🚅🚅🚝🚝🚝🚋🚋🚋🎄🎄🎄🎄🎁🎁🎁🎁
Nice one Caleb! There’s a new barrier on this crossing now. The new barrier is on the tram side
Lovely crossing, nice alarms in Nottinghamshire. Warning another train approaching! Second time ive heard that now. Fab tram & train catches. Busy crossing. ❤
Very nice crossing, love the alarm. Another train is approaching fast beep very nice! Never heard this before. Nice barriers also. Fab catches ❤ & lovely crossing house.😊
Epic! Nice video of it on lowering 4 with the whistle aswell!
Glorious Steam, matey and have a very Merry Christmas! 🙂
Merry Christmas to you too!
Great video! Hope you have a great Christmas! What a divvy in closure 2 aswell!
And you. Thanks!
Oh Brilliant Catch! And Great Videos too! Happy Christmas! Hope you have a great day!
Thanks! You too!
Nice video and crossing!
Lincoln Street has only 57 Trains a day, But if you can include the trams, then this crossing is the busiest in the UK, With 480 Trains a day!
Great video and crossing! Glad you were able to get that AOCL. Interesting how the crossing shuts-off while the train's still on it.
A number of these AOCLs seem to time out questionably early.
At that time of day on a Saturday, the trams cross-over with one another at Butler's Hill (the tram stop just before this crossing), which is why there was that triple
And, for what it's worth, the Incentro was tram 202 as it was still wearing the remnants of the Consent Coalition livery (that they took off badly)
Busy road, Bet there is quite a bit of misuse here. Like the double wig wams here nice catches. ❤
I think it gets more than its fair share of it too.
Very nice! looks like a nice area. Nice victorian house next to the crossing. Nice alarms & high barriers. Nice view down the double tracks fab catches, ❤
No horn for a half barrier?
It's not a standard requirement for half barrier crossings typically, but some have a requirement for departing trains if right by a station.
Great video and neat crossing! I suspect the one extra tram signal there is to let crews on the light rail there know that the traffic lights are preventing people from going across the tram crossing. Unless you're talking about the section seen on the right at 5:27, which I suspect could just basically be used as a splice box or other equipment housing for the ped button underneath the signal.
It was the one on the right at 5:27 I was referring to. I wouldn't've thought that would be too likely it were anything to do with the ped button, unless in this case it has been repurposed.
@@SouthEastLevelCrossings I wouldn't be too surprised about it being reused as such, I seem to recall other people have found similar sections over there that have been blanked-out to be used for similar purposes before.
nice one
