Hey gang 🌟RIP to my camera but I hope it was worth it ☔️🤣 Please Like, Comment & Subscribe to support this TINY channel continuing to make these sorts of videos ❤️ My favourite parts are 0:16 for insane map customisation, 7:15 for impressive rain test, 11:29 High contrast map is fantastic, 13:52 so impressive that this functional map is free, 18:29 for heat maps and lastly 19:15 I’m a massive fan of the strap design 😝
I think of all the mainstream reviews Ive watched on the new Suunto Vertical, your review is the best. Ive subscribed to your channel - keep up the awesome reviews!
Very well done video. Great information, tutorials and interface. Truly one of the better videos out there for using the navigation tools of the Suunto Vertical. If you are ever in the Great Northwest of Washington State in the USA be sure to come out into Olympic National Park and play in my backyard!!!
Thankyou greatly for the kind words! Really appreciate it and comments like this inspire me to keep going 👊🏽 Ahh I’d love to come back to USA, I’m thinking of racing some of your 200 mile events in 2025 😍
Hi, I like the look of this watch...I have chatted before about a Garman X7. I had an accident last summer, slow to get the Clavicle fracker fixed. I have been on training programmes, all going good. I am now looking at incorporating Nordic Walking. Cambridge, Norfolk, Wales and Spain...I have seen a number of reviews. Chad gave it a great review. I am very surprised Sunnto don’t seem to get a big support following. I think, I’ll go for the Vertical Titanian Solar. Link it to my new phone. Samsuns Galaxy XCover7. Take care. I have walked a lot of the Norfolk coast, Peddars Way. My family live very close by.
Sorry to hear about your accident, I hope recovery has been going as you had hoped. Awesome to hear that you're local as well.. cambridge, Norfolk.. you're just down the road for me 👊🏼 I would love to visit Spain.. and do some Nordic Walking tbf! You've got some exciting plans! 🔥 I think if Suunto continue along their trajectory, they will further grow their following. There's no denying the quality of the products they're now putting out. I think the design is objectively more "beautiful" than most sports watches. If they iron out the UI experience with more customisation/features and improve the heart rate sensor there will be no argument for other brands at their price point 🙈
Mate, this is awesome and really helpful. The Suunto app for navigation is the main reason I’ve just bought the vertical. Looks really user friendly and specific without all the confusing bells and whistles. I’ll be testing it on my next thru hike round the carneddau ridge circuit in Snowden next month.
Hopefully people enjoy this one! 🎥 Yeah, I like how the app is just straight to business and works well..but at the same time.. if you want to turn on settings such as avalanche risk/ heat map/ road surfaces, then you can 🤯🤩 Wow I just googled Carneddau ridge as I’d never heard of it .. it looks beautiful! Be careful out there.. looks like a couple of grade 1. Scrambles which would also terrify the life out of me like Crib Goch did 😂
@@ActiveIdeas Ots beautiful. You have to keep your wits about you and know your limitations. Never risk it bad weather as the hills aren’t going anywhere. Been hiking for years so the vertical is a great addition to my kit.
@@williammay6879 Notes taken here mate! I know there are some good climbs in the Lakes which look more within my level of comfort.. Striding Edge has been calling me for a few years now. Good luck with your adventures mate!
@user-sd5wy9cm1p it would suit through hiking very well. Battery life and super accurate navigation are what first come to mind for me! You would need to remember to download the correct maps on the watch as this isn’t automatically done at the factory, that caught me out once where I downloaded the wrong area 🌟All the best
@@user-sd5wy9cm1pYes it’s a very reliable and accurate source of navigation for my thru hiking. Really responsive in all weathers too. As mentioned make sure you download the correct map area prior to your trip. I did the same mistake and although it still enabled me to to follow my route via breadcrumb but there were no visible map features until I downloaded the correct area. Love mine atm.
I agree this is masssssively important for me and was one of the reasons I wasn't able to use this on my latest race .. the spine.race 268 Mile ultra marathon
@@kasifbey I’ve been using the Vertical for nearly a year and a half with no issues 👍🏽 Durability is good, so is usage. I’ve heard a few horror story’s about Suunto customer service if I’m being honest. Seems like they’ll get it done but it might take longer than you’d hope for with a sports watch. The good news is that it’s unlikely you’ll ever have to go down this route 👍🏽
Great review, very accurate description of the navigation functions. Route planning in Suunto looks easier and more detailed to plan. The only advantage of garmin is street names and amoled. Do you think Suunto will add names? What's your opinion about readability of Suunto traditional screen vs garmin amoled?
Hey Dante! Thankyou for the lovely comment 🌟 Route planning was much easier in my testing with the fields local to me.. the app was able to detect the fields properly so that I could plan a route around the perimeter of them.. cool stuff! Route planning is also good on Garmin Connect, especially when done on a laptop .. I’ve planned 20 mile routes through deep forest without hassle for example 💻 Yeah, the AMOLED is nice.. not sure it’s worth the battery trade off yet though.. maybe a “Epix Gen 2X” would be different. Street names, trail names, buildings, rivers even parking 🅿️ etc can all be found on a Garmin watch without a phone 👍🏽 Going by what DCrainmaker said I think we can expect things like street names to take at least 2 years to be implemented.. but who knows, software development seems to be quicker these days & a sooner launch wouldn’t surprise me 🤞🏽 The readability of this Vertical is genuinely great.. they’ve definitely worked some magic here with the improved screen technology, choice of fonts & colours.. it’s a pleasure to look at.. I think credit is due here too to the maps not being messy for example.. not overly busy just the right amount of detail for this screen type. Garmin Amoled is super readable on darker days and I love it indoors for at the gym. Outside I still prefer MIP especially with direct sunlight or super bright overcast days where amoled gets washed out .. this might just be me though. Hope this helps 🌟
Hi there, a good review thanks. I notice that the Vertical is set to use latitude/longitude for position (13:24), since I mainly use UK maps, I'm hoping that the watch can be set to show BNG ( os grid refs) does anyone know? Thanks in advance, Steve
If my memory serves me correctly.. when navigating using the back to start feature, you’ll get a red arrow for north and a blue arrow for target location 🎯📍
Great video as always. I have a quick question: can you see forests on the map? Or more specifically, does it show the edge of the forest. This would be very helpful to me since I’m running a lot in the woods and it’s nice to know if you’re far or near the edge of the forest. For example, I had a Coros Vertix 2 and it didn’t show any forest areas which was quite disappointing. Thanks 😊
Thanks mate ❤️ Quick answer is yes, you’ll be able to see forests 🌳 And you’ll definitely be able to see through edges of the woods too! What’s cool is you can see where a forest will turn into a field so deciphering between Greenland terrain is quick and easy to do on the watch! Don’t expect it to show every last tree but woods, forests and Greenland for sure 🔥 Oh man, I didn’t know that about Coros, that’s a shame Cheers again bud 🌟
Hey there! Thanks for the comment 🌟 For trail running and ultra running the Suunto Race seems better suited due to battery life and I’m assuming pinpoint accuracy like the vertical. It has routable maps on the phone app which you can quickly send to the watch on demand. For city/town running the 965 would be better due to the street names and in-watch routable maps. Hope this helps 🌟
Thanks for the awesome comment! That’s a good question, I have a video exactly on this coming out on Wednesday; I’ll go into detail about what I prefer and why. I’ve really enjoyed my initial testing of the Race (it’s amazing) but the Vertical still holds its own for those who like ultra-endurance sports and more customisation. Is there anything specific you want me to dive into for the video?
@@ActiveIdeas you’re welcome! Well, I’m interested in gym workouts, trail walking/hiking and I like a watch to have navigation. Also I would like to see which is the best eco system. I’ve been trying to compare Suunto to Garmin to coros.
Abie from this channel tried maps in Finland 🇫🇮 Said it was great. Most world regions are on Suunto.. when I went to Barbados 🇧🇧 unfortunately there weren’t any maps for that region. By the looks of it you should be good if you’re going anywhere other than Barbados or Caribbean islands ❤️ Important to note that Suunto let you set compass declination for world wide travel.. there are not many sports watches AT ALL on the market that allow you this level of detail. Hope this helps 🫶🏽
Oo that’s a great question.. it definitely comes with “Suunto Coach” and pretty in depth training features.. not too sure I’d that’s what you mean then? All the best Ermin 🔥
Hi. I'm choosing between Suunto Vertical and Garmin Fenix 7 Pro, which of these watches is better to use for navigating in unfamiliar terrain away from cities?
Hey mate! Might need some popcorn for this one 🍿 On the surface I’ve always thought Garmin have had the better navigation because of how many features they offer BUT since testing the Vertical and Fenix 7 Pro in real life scenarios it’s night and day for me. Garmin’s navigation has seriously failed me (gps acquisition is completely lost) about 10 times.. it always seems to be when I’m up in the mountains near cliff edges or thick in dense forested areas. To try combat this I turn on multiband and it STILL can’t locate satellites and then drains battery life even faster. The scary thing is, rather than saying “lost signal” it just points in a random direction which is usually off the edge of a cliff haha. ☠️ I contacted Garmin thinking I had a faulty unit but since then I’ve heard and seen on first-account maybe 5-6 other people with modern Garmin’s (Fenix/Epix pro) all doing the same thing. Listening to the recent ‘tea and trails podcast’ with Lucy Gossage she also talks about a similar experience AND name drops Damien Hall (one of the best trail runners) having similar issues with his Garmin. And just last week I was in south wales testing the Suunto race/vertical with Abie (co-host from this channel) and our friend Lewis with a brand new Fenix 7X pro had it happen to him.. no gps signal and maps completely lost for about 40 minutes whilst on pretty dangerous terrain in the forest. Me & Abie had to lead the way from then on 🤣 The more I write I’m thinking.. someone needs to make a video on this because NO reviewers are talking about it🤣 But yeah Suunto’s compass accuracy, map detail, battery life whilst navigating, GPS acquisition.. every day I’m more blown away with Suunto’s navigation. It’s a much more stable platform. I have experienced bugs with Suunto also.. they just haven’t ever impacted my activity or safety. With Suunto you have to download all of your maps manually when you first get the watch which takes ages; not great. Most of the world is covered but when I went to Barbados there was no map to download. There also seems to be this bug where maps just go black (topo maps disappear), when this watch was first released you had to soft reset the watch to fix it.. now it has only happened to me once in about 4 months and I was able to fix it by zooming out and then back in again. Another slightly annoying thing with Suunto is when you load up a course it won’t show you how to get to the start.. whereas on Garmin & Coros you’ll be directed. There are easy work arounds but Suunto requires you to be abit more technologically minded, maybe more pre-planning is needed for your adventures. The good news is that the app is amazing so any pre-planning of routes, points of interest, base camps ⛺️ and back-up routes genuinely takes 5 minutes to create and then send to watch 👌🏽 Anyways, hope that helped haha.. and sorry for the rant ;) I think I need a video to get it out my system 🤭🔥
@@ActiveIdeas thank you very much! I have bought Suunto and it’s interesting how it will work.. what is really annoying that I can download only Open Street Maps and nothing of other maps.
Welcome to the Suunto club 🔥 Don’t forget the power of the Suunto app with maps and route planning. Yeah.. I don’t think there is a “TalkyToaster” map downloaded equivalent for Suunto. Someone should programme that 😍
I’ve already mentioned in other comments on your channel that this is quite scary. My Enduro 2 hasn’t done anything funky yet and hopefully never will. The more I see it the more I have to agree with you that you should probably make a video about this. Gathering all the info on the internet (but mostly your findings) it seems that the newer Pro models seem to be affected by this. Fortunately, I own a non-Pro model 😅 But now that you mentioned this behavior, I want to test it throughly. I have a dozen trips planned high up in the mountains in the following months. I’ll keep you posted if I find anything strange. I’ll have my phone with offline maps as a backup so I’ll play it safe 😅
You make some excellent points mate! I love your hypothesis of how Garmin suits ultra runners whereas Suunto prevails for people who actually want to navigate 🧭 🗺️
This is fantastic. Having been over crib Goch once (I’m going to target dragons back in 2024!) I enjoy how “mundane” the 2km, low elevation change route initially looks and then oh - it’s crib Goch 😂 Thanks a lot for addressing the grid ref - someone else asked it but I had the same q. Great vid mate cheers
🤣🤣🤣 Exactly!! I still have nightmares about my Crib Goch experience 😉 Tbh, it blows my mind how ultra runners will do this so casually in events .. especially with the fatigue of Montane’s Dragon’s Back Race (good luck by the way)!! Cheers for the lovely comment and no worries! All the best 🌟
@@ActiveIdeas haha I’m not too excited about it - but it’s a few km of 380 so I’m trying not to think of it 😂 cape wrath ultra was amazing so looking for more. No worries 😁
🤣🤣 worry about it when you get there! Let me know how you get on anyway.. if it’s less scary than Crib Goch I’ll consider the route myself as I want to work on my confidence in those terrains! Well done on Cape Wrath 🤯 What are your top tips for a multi-day event like this.. I’ve got the summer spine in 5 weeks 😨
@@ActiveIdeas summer spine - nice! Good luck mate! Back to back days with your kit in training is a great tip. And other than that it’s a case of eating eating eating - different style because the camps at cape wrath are very well supplied and you can eat til your hearts content - which is a lot! On the days it was just pacing and nutrition. And remember - if it’s going well it’ll get worse, but if it’s going bad it’ll get better!
You can but annoyingly you have to type the coordinates into the app first and then sync your watch to the app! A benefit of this though, is that you can choose for the app to automatically calculate turn by turn routing.
@ my idea was im in the miltary and my idea was if like my phone is dead could i put in mgrs cordinates in the watch not using phone . Looks like its not the case with sunto , maybe u know about diferetn watch like fenix 7,8?
@@TheDeixx yeah, unfortunately this is the shortfall of going with Suunto 👍🏽 It’s a shame because their compass is so much better than Garmin. Have you looked at the Garmin Enduro 3 Navigation Video?
Thanks for a great video! But I have one question. Say you have walked for two days and on day 3 the storm hits and the phone is dead? Can you in any way reverse the route from logbook from previous days or do you need the app as in earlier models to create and export routes to the phone? Im seriously considering the Vertical but the above is a must if the watch is usable for its intended use I you ask me. If not,you find yourself in the middle of nowhere with a dead phone and a dysfunctioning 800dollar watch that cant help you(ok, can measure your heart rate :) ) Glad for help! Keep up the good work!
Thanks for the comment Frank super appreciate it! It doesn’t matter if I have Suunto, Garmin, Coros if I’m going on a risky 3 days expedition I’ll make sure I cover all my bases. I’d create routes for plan a, plan, b, plan c. On all of these devices I’d also “save location” of my car, tent, checkpoint (whatever the closest safety location was). Recently I did have a storm break out when I was on top of Pen Y Fan and neither Suunto, Coros or Garmin were able to get me back to my car quickly (I was half way through a circular route and decided to continue but was hoping to discover some shortcuts, it was too much hassle and even more of an unknown risk). With Suunto you’ll be able to save locations, save multiple routes (so you can switch routes if you run into storms) and also you’ll always have the ability to use the compass and take bearings. All these watches also plot a breadcrumb trail on the map so you can easy follow/retrace your footsteps back to safety. Id mostly advise heavily planning trips and not putting yourself into these situations. I will say on top of Pen Y Fan with 70mph gusts (I was scared lol) I was relying heavily on the accuracy of Suunto, it was pinpoint whereas the Garmin had the GPX wondering off the cliff sometimes. I also highly rated Coros accuracy, impressive stuff. Garmin does have to advantage of being able to create routes on the watch without a need for a phone.. like I said earlier though you take a hit on accuracy and these random routes are completely unknown in their difficulty 👍🏽 For the price of one Garmin Fenix 7X Pro you could easily get a second hand Vertical and a Vertix (got mine for £290 off eBay) if you’re doing some next level adventuring 👍🏽 Hope this helps bud 🌟
Spot on, Frank! Suunto doesn't allow you to do a super needing and, I say, basic thing: continue your route for more than a single stage. If you have a two days hike, you basically can not pause it, get out of the Navigation screen to use the watch in other ways and then get back to continue the initial Exercise/Navigation. You need to start over again. So you need to anticipate where you'd reach in the first day and plan the route from there on for a 2nd day of hike, and so on. On Garmin, you can just Resume the initial hike for a 2nd day and continue your journey. This way, you can also see where you initially left and Track back your steps on map/breadcrumbs. I think Suunto needs to urgently correct this, adding a simple Resume track option to allow multi-days routes.
Cheers for the comment mate! Really appreciate the support for the channel 🔥 Not necessarily true.. you can cancel and resume navigation on Suunto whenever you like, Infact, it’s slightly easier to do this on Suunto than on Garmin. Let’s say you’re hiking two days from point A, to point C but you plan to stop off at point B. I would create a route all the way from point A to point C. You can easily enough resume the navigation in the morning or do the course in reverse to follow your footsteps. Only issue is you’ll lose your “full” activity and it will be split into two. I’m totally with you though, I’d LOVE Suunto to implement Resume Later and the ability to use the watch whilst within an activity.. with Garmin you have full multi-tasking. It’s unbelievable really.. so hopefully other brands catch up 🔥 cheers again mate 👊🏽
Ok, but you will have two separate activities. And besides, this is available if you plan the route ahrad. But if you start the activity without a preloaded map, just register it as you progress, you won't have access to your starting point. My request for Suunto is still on :)
@mitroiano there are less user-friendly options such as “save location” where you’d have access to your starting point with no phone needed but yeah, I agree.. I also hope they add resume later along with the ability to access the watch’s HomeScreen/widgets during an activity. It’s a good request 👊🏽🔥 Fingers crossed mate
Great work, always with loads of details that no other covers. Just after watching the entire video, I am still quite confused about the differences between Suunto's navigation and Garmin's. Aside from the turn by turn navigation, it seems that Suunto's watch will work with a map and traditional navigation skills coherently, and Suunto's app has route planning better than Garmin's (I have heard Garmin's still need a computer software to do route planning). But it was mentioned by other reviewers that Suunto watch's map is not as detailed as Garmin and not routable on the fly (like a handhold GPS) on the watch itself without using the phone app.
Thankyou Harry 🌟 It is pretty confusing tbf.. I guess at the end of the day for 90% of people/scenarios either a Garmin or Suunto will be great companions for navigation. With Garmin you get-on-the-fly course creation straight from the Watch. The Suunto is a little more dependent on the app for course creation but in this does have its advantages. In this, granted, very small test I actually originally tried to create the “test.GPX” on Garmin connect because Ive used that platform for a decade and wanted to therefore save time. It failed. Connect had no idea where the separate fields were (I can confirm this specific local terrain was devolved about 4 years ago).. Suunto’s app knew exactly where these fields began and ended 👍🏽 In ‘Running With Marc’s’ review he talks about the maps being like art and having “too much detail” can actually be disorienting. There is something about this High Contrast setting which I just love, the clarity is undeniable! Alternatively, the added detail on Garmin makes using those Watches a pleasure especially on urban environments with lots of street names. Then there’s the impressive compass accuracy on Suunto, unrivalled .. but then Garmin will actually guide you (or even calculate turn by turn) to the beginning of your route.. lots of give and take here 🤣 What watch you using at the moment again?
@@ActiveIdeas I am using Garmin Instinct Solar, but plan to upgrade to Garmin 965 or Fenix 7 Pro, Epix Gen 2 Pro (which will be released in May or June this year). Suunto Vertical does seems to be viable contender in design and attention to detail in its features. What I prioritize is: hiking trail navigation, pool swimming (stroke detection), skiing.
@@harrythehandyman Coorr well, with any of these watches you'll be fine with those activities. I guess the first thing you'll need to decide is do you want AMOLED or are you happy with MIP? You mention hiking and skiing.. I think in terms of safety id rather have a high-durability watch with loadddds of battery life. If I get lost in the mountains (pretty likely with my terrible sense of direction lol) I either want the Vertical or the Fenix 7 pro on my wrist.. not the 965 for example. I don't want to feel like im racing my watch to make it back home before it dies or goes into battery saver mode. Excited for you though Harry, Upgrading from the Instinct is going to be massive 🌟

Apologies for another question on this 😂 do the mapping graphics on the vertical/race show mountain summits? Appreciate they may not be named but I find even seeing the peak useful on my Garmin.
That’s absolutely fine mate!! Keep the questions coming 🤣 Sorry, it’s been a few weeks since I’ve been up a mountain so I can’t say for sure. But I’m pretty sure when I went up Pen Y Fan (with no pre-loaded course) it showed both the trail, the top lines and the peak of the summit 🔥Ask me again in 4 days.. I’m running the UTMB Snowdonia 100km & will be submitting a sickening amount of mountains haha 🙈
@010MACS oh siiick! 14 peaks is going to be amazing! 52km & almost 4000m elevation 🙈🔥 I should have said.. the Suunto app itself for creating routes etc is much better than the competition at the moment, that’s where a lot of the magic of. The experience is coming from 🌟
@@ActiveIdeas will you be doing that 14 peaks too or enjoying some well earned recovery? You pump the races out 😂 Tbh I use Strava and it’s decent enough but always on the look out for improved route options!!
@010MACS hahaha, I think I’ll leave the 14 peaks! Only just recovered from my last 100 miler! I fancy doing some FKT’s and backyard ultras but do have the Mud Crew Plague race lined up 🔥 Oo Strava’s decent tbf! Suunto’s mapping is better for longer adventures but Strava is deffo wicked for just plotting quick lil’ runs 🔥

Great comparaison ! From a pure display quality/visibility and navigation which one(s) do you consider the best ? (Not even talking about Price and battery life)
Fantastic comment! Best watches for navigation: Garmin Enduro 2: Battery life &.features Forerunner 965: Stunning screen, luxury Coros Vertix 2: Impressive GPS accuracy when it matters and unbelievable battery life for expoditions Suunto Vertical: The accuracy, Battery life and highly in-depth raw features (No particular order) Feel free to drop another comment if you still have questions
Fantastic comment, I've returned my 965, it was fun and.a good looking watch but the durability and battery life were not there. Right now I'm pretty set on keeping the Suunto Vertical and the Garmin Fenix 7 Pro (that flashlight on a 47mm watch 😍) I really do hope coros brings us some magic this year.. they've got some clawing back to do 😄
@@hasanyavuz1125 To create a full route with turn by turn navigation you have to use the Suunto app. With Wi-Fi or 3G phone signal it should take less than 30 seconds to click "A Start route" to "B End route" and then sync to watch. Once synced you will not need your phone at all, you can chose to leave it at home for example and still use the route on your watch. Also without a route loaded you can still look at the Map if you fancy "winging it" haha and follow the tracks and trails you can see. Hope this helps Hasan! 🌟
So which one is the best man? Suunto or Coros? I have garmin instinct 2x solar , and would like to get colored one with long lasting battery , please advise
I prefer Suunto.. unfortunately for Coros at this price point .. Suunto does everything better. It’s more comfortable, better data, better application, better battery and I personally think looks better too. Oh and it’s carbon compensated, if you care about that 👊🏽
Thank you for your video, very interesting! I have one question: there is the possibility of insert the coordinates of a point directly into the watch?
Thankyou for the comment! I’ve just double checked and I don’t think this is possible.. so you’d have to use the phone App to input the coordinates/location. The benefit of this is you can then choose if you want a straight line “A to B” 50 mile route for example or tell the app to snap to trails and make a “A to B” 70 miles with turn by turn directions 🗺️ Once you’ve done this, as you can see at the end of the video the saved POI (coordinates) or route will take a few seconds to sync and then you’ll be able to use the watch to navigate towards it 🌟 Hope that helped!
Hello man! Amazing content! I need some advise. Most of all gym, sometime bike, crosscountry skiing, running and football. Thinking about Suunto 9 peak, FR 255, or not new fenix 5 plus. Fenix 5+ still have support. What do you think, this watch still relevant? About 200 dollars for this. FR255 about 350-400 dollars. Extended rest metrics is good, but i guess, not sure
Honestly by all you’ve said I would consider the Fenix 6 Pro as it does all these things very well! You’ll also find very cheap deals for the F6! The pro also comes with maps. IF you don’t care about maps then Suunto 9 Peak Pro is a good option. .. if you’re looking for comfort (especially dong gym) then 255 is wicked.. not the best watch for skinning though. Hope this helps in someway! 👊🏽🌟
@@ActiveIdeas Thanks man! I just bought FR255s, and i don't like size, although i have 16cm wrist)) So i thinking about not new Fenix 6pro, so what do you think about size 6 or 6s? Cause we have almost the same sizes of wrist. And what you favorite soft and best watches for you right now? Honestly , i don't like garmin app, suunto's app is amazing(in reviews) but they haven't desktop app and this interface in watches.. From 2008 year)) So, its all about compromise. And one more question, about interface usability in maps fenix 6, is it comfort without touchscreen? Sometimes, i will be use this in hikinп, i think. will I be able to navigate the track without wasting too much time. or save some money and take fenix 7?
Did you ever choose a watch? I’d be interested to hear what you decided to get. We have a funny wrist size where I really feel the 47mm is too big and the 42mm is too small! One watch that seemed to fit my wrist great (and I loved the massive 1.4” display) was the 965 tbf but I hope Garmin create a 45mm Enduro 3 🙈
no, thought about suunto race, but this size... and for now don't see active support. Only 2 small updates with minor fixes. I see only one variant for now - its Fenix 7s. But too 42mm is too small. I agree with you, but display resolution is good, in compare with FR255s. So maybe i will buy Fenix 7s for next 1-2 year. And then will check upcoming watches, Maybe really Garmin will do watches with 45mm dimensions. But i guess it will be another brands. @@ActiveIdeas
Yeah, routes can easily be shared by “exporting GPX”. I don’t think the phone app works offline yet but I may be mistaken. I’ll be using “All Trails” this weekend to create routes offline and then send to the Suunto app if I need to 👍🏽
Oo im not sure, this Vertical is definitely more comfortable than my vertix 2, enduro 2 felt large on my wrist but the Vertical is sitting nice on my wrist bones, maybe even better than the new Fenix 7 Pro as it’s more comfortable to sleep in .. everyone’s different though. I can get an improved fit on Garmin using the nylon bands but I still much prefer the Suunto .. it really doesn’t feel like I have 74g on me 🤯
@user-sd5wy9cm1p that’s a fair summary! I hope you enjoy your Epix Pro.. I must say, I’m abit jealous as I still haven’t had a chance to play with any of the Epix watches! I definitely agree with you on the nylon strap.. I won’t go back to silicone given the choice. All the best with your adventures 🌟
Quick question on turn by turn - if you import a gpx file not made on the suunto app can you still get turn by turn alerts on the vertical? Thanks in advance! 🎉
Great question! I have no idea! I think it depends on the file that you’re importing, most the time, no (I think) but then some of my imported GPXs DO have turn but turn it seems. I think to make sure, it’s best to create the route on the Suunto App and add the turns yourself 🔥
I don’t have to select POIs to see POIS. For example.. I could choose to simply look at the map, or I could choose to navigate and follow a course.. whilst in these modes I could still see the tent, elk & “pot of gold” located on the map. Hope this makes sense 🌟 all the best
Hi , I need your help in buying the right watch for my runs , which would have the navigation and doesn't need to carry our phone along to our runs ... Please don't suggest Gramin fenix or other gramin experience watch
Well if you don't want a Garmin then you have to make the choice between Coros and Suunto! For serious navigation in the mountains the ive found the Suunto to be on another level of accuracy. It's saved me going off course too many times to count, where my brand new Garmin 7 Pro was glitching out and showing complete wrong directions. One issue I did have with Suunto is that I just went on holiday to Barbados, went to download the map for this country only to find it didn't exist. I then looked on Garmin and they didn't have Barbados either. To my shock Coros had already pre-downloaded a world map and this INCLUDED Barbados with all the streets, trails, roads, and detail. For the first 3 days I didn't have a SIM card and Coros saved my butt in terms of not getting lost in this country. So just double check if you get Suunto that the parts of the world you'll be adventuring in are covered (and if they are you'll be spoiled with features and I'd steer you towards the Vertical, one of the most comfortable watches I've had for its size and battery life too). If Suunto don't cover your countries I'd heavily steer you towards Coros Apex 2 pro (don't get a vertex and don't get an Apex 2). Hope this helps. All thoughts are my own ❤️🌟
Hey Gheata! You can customise the sport profiles for example by making a “running profile” with all the data you want to see rather than using Suunto’s default data which is nice. Also, to see metrics such as “sunrise and sunset” you can add them to the watch by selecting them in SuuntoPlus in your sport mode.. if you have already started the activity but forgot to add things like moon and sun then you can hold the middle (options) button and add them on the fly! The only thing is I’m not sure about is if you can go back to the homesceeen whilst an activity is running for example!?! If I was in an activity and wanted to check notifications, my sleep tracking or have a quick look at the weather forecast for example .. hopefully this is possible and I just haven’t found out how to do it yet🌟

I think of all the mainstream reviews Ive watched on the new Suunto Vertical, your review is the best. Ive subscribed to your channel - keep up the awesome reviews!
Lovely words Mike!! Thankyou 🌟
This has to be one of my absolute favorite reviews of the mapping and navigation features of the Vertical! So fun to watch and great info!
Thanks mate! An absolute pleasure 🔥👊🏽🌟
Really appreciate it and comments like this inspire me to keep going 👊🏽 Ahh I’d love to come back to USA, I’m thinking of racing some of your 200 mile events in 2025 😍
What a legend. High quality review with most important information. You deserve milions of subscribers. Thank you for that.
Legendary comment! 🔥👊🏼 Thankyou for the kind words! Hopefully my subscriber count will grow 🫣 No worries mate
I think if Suunto continue along their trajectory, they will further grow their following.
Great review! I’m loving the new vertical just hope suunto adds on the map an arrow or line back to start when using find back!
I agree this is masssssively important for me and was one of the reasons I wasn't able to use this on my latest race .. the spine.race 268 Mile ultra marathon
So how can I choose for usage, durability and service maintenance?
@@kasifbey I’ve been using the Vertical for nearly a year and a half with no issues 👍🏽 Durability is good, so is usage. I’ve heard a few horror story’s about Suunto customer service if I’m being honest. Seems like they’ll get it done but it might take longer than you’d hope for with a sports watch. The good news is that it’s unlikely you’ll ever have to go down this route 👍🏽
Should I buy Garmin watches or Suunto? I don't know how well-being in Turkey map with gps
You should be fine with either in Turkey mate! If you was more accurate GPS, get the Suunto 👍🏽
I love your real world videos. Well done!
Cheers Bruce 🍻 Appreciate it!

This this can be done in the map settings! ❤️
@@ActiveIdeas hey that's really useful, I'm grateful that you got back to me 👍
A pleasure Steve! All the best with your adventures
Great view, on the Suunto does it show an arrow on the map screen when using back to start
Don’t expect it to show every last tree but woods, forests and Greenland for sure 🔥 Oh man, I didn’t know that about Coros, that’s a shame
Cheers again bud 🌟
Great video, and the algorithm gods in your favour. More views than the goat dc rainmaker
Ahh thanks lad! I hope the algorithm keeps pushing the content to keep me motivated haha 😄🌟
Hello, which one would you choose for TRAIL running , GARMIN 965 or SUUNTO RACE, taking into account that only Garmin has routable maps?
Great video! I’ve been looking at getting a Suunto refurbished vertical and now they came out with the Race. Which one do you prefer and why? Thanks
Have you tried any foreign maps? I'm going to Jordan so was thinking to get a vertical.
Thanks. Do you know if there is a way of getting maps with proper place names and streets etc on the watch?
Not currently. But the companion app works well for all this information when you’re creating the routes and maps
Does this watch come with 7-day adaptive training guidance plan such as Sunnto 3 and 5?
Me & Abie had to lead the way from then on 🤣
The more I write I’m thinking.. someone needs to make a video on this because NO reviewers are talking about it🤣 But yeah Suunto’s compass accuracy, map detail, battery life whilst navigating, GPS acquisition.. every day I’m more blown away with Suunto’s navigation. The good news is that the app is amazing so any pre-planning of routes, points of interest, base camps ⛺️ and back-up routes genuinely takes 5 minutes to create and then send to watch 👌🏽
Anyways, hope that helped haha.. and sorry for the rant ;) I think I need a video to get it out my system 🤭🔥
Fortunately, I own a non-Pro model 😅
But now that you mentioned this behavior, I want to test it throughly.
Having been over crib Goch once (I’m going to target dragons back in 2024!) I enjoy how “mundane” the 2km, low elevation change route initially looks and then oh - it’s crib Goch 😂
Thanks a lot for addressing the grid ref - someone else asked it but I had the same q.
Different by which i mean, summer spine is continuous right? So you may have to plan a bit differently but im sure you’re on that!
Can u putin in cordinates for location in the watch(sunto) ?
Garmin does have to advantage of being able to create routes on the watch without a need for a phone.. like I said earlier though you take a hit on accuracy and these random routes are completely unknown in their difficulty 👍🏽
For the price of one Garmin Fenix 7X Pro you could easily get a second hand Vertical and a Vertix (got mine for £290 off eBay) if you’re doing some next level adventuring 👍🏽 Hope this helps bud 🌟
Really appreciate the support for the channel 🔥
Not necessarily true.. you can cancel and resume navigation on Suunto whenever you like, Infact, it’s slightly easier to do this on Suunto than on Garmin.
Fantastic comment! Best watches for navigation:
Garmin Enduro 2: Battery life &.features

Coros Vertix 2: Impressive GPS accuracy when it matters and unbelievable battery life for expoditions
Suunto Vertical: The accuracy, Battery life and highly in-depth raw features

Suunto vertical or Garmin 965? Which one are you choosing as you permanent watch?
Fantastic comment, I've returned my 965, it was fun and.a good looking watch but the durability and battery life were not there. Right now I'm pretty set on keeping the Suunto Vertical and the Garmin Fenix 7 Pro (that flashlight on a 47mm watch 😍) I really do hope coros brings us some magic this year.. they've got some clawing back to do 😄
Can we set a route and navigate on the clock map?
Do you mean.. can the watch create it’s own routes (without phone)? Or are you asking a different question? 🌟
@@ActiveIdeas firs. Can the watch create it's own route without phone
Oh and it’s carbon compensated, if you care about that 👊🏽
@ActiveIdeas thank you for your response
@@HandMaded a pleasure! All the best
I have dots all over from scrolling around. How do I remove them??
Send me a video of this on my Facebook active ideas page so I can see what you mean and then I’ll try and help mate ❤️
Thank you for your video, very interesting!
I have one question: there is the possibility of insert the coordinates of a point directly into the watch?
Thankyou for the comment! I’ve just double checked and I don’t think this is possible.. so you’d have to use the phone App to input the coordinates/location. The benefit of this is you can then choose if you want a straight line “A to B” 50 mile route for example or tell the app to snap to trails and make a “A to B” 70 miles with turn by turn directions 🗺️
Once you’ve done this, as you can see at the end of the video the saved POI (coordinates) or route will take a few seconds to sync and then you’ll be able to use the watch to navigate towards it 🌟 Hope that helped!
@@ActiveIdeas
finally Suunto release the Race S exactly for someone like you! 🙈
Hello, can you share routes with someone that also has the app? Can you use the maps on the phone for planning routes without cell service? Thanks
Yeah, routes can easily be shared by “exporting GPX”. I don’t think the phone app works offline yet but I may be mistaken. I’ll be using “All Trails” this weekend to create routes offline and then send to the Suunto app if I need to 👍🏽
Main gripe with Suunto is the the lugs sit weirdly high on my wrist and dig into the wrist bone. Fenix 51mm and Epix 51mm sit nice and flush.
I can get an improved fit on Garmin using the nylon bands but I still much prefer the Suunto .. it really doesn’t feel like I have 74g on me 🤯
at least they smoothed out the HR sensor from the 7! That thing was nasty.
🤣🤣 I like it
Quick question on turn by turn - if you import a gpx file not made on the suunto app can you still get turn by turn alerts on the vertical? Thanks in advance! 🎉
Great question! I have no idea! I think it depends on the file that you’re importing, most the time, no (I think) but then some of my imported GPXs DO have turn but turn it seems. I think to make sure, it’s best to create the route on the Suunto App and add the turns yourself 🔥
@@ActiveIdeas nice one cheers!
@010MACS pleasure mate!
I did not understand from the video does not show the POI point on the map, only the direction yes? Are these POI points on the map on offline maps
Yeah offline maps wort without the phone and when viewing the map I can indeed see the POIs .. hope this helps 🙈
@@ActiveIdeas that is, when you are in the navigation menu and select POIs, they are displayed in the clock on the map, right?
All thoughts are my own ❤️🌟
@@ActiveIdeas Thanks a ton 👍 ... This helps a lot ....I live in the UK ...keep up the good work with your content... Cheers
A pleasure ❤️🌟
Garmin display beats that of the Suunto by a mile. Wheb they’re next to each other the Suunto display looks so dim imo
True but this Garmin only last about 5-8 days of battery life (and that was on a good stint).. the Suunto you're looking at months 👍
what models are they? 😢
Suunto - Vertical
Coros - Vertix 2
Garmin - 965
Race or vertical ?
Kingsley here: Vertical 🔥
Abie: Race
Race is definitely better value for money but the Vertical is an ultra runners dream 🔥
can we get some watch faces to see ? can you customize a watch face on it ? to have moon phase, sunrise/sunset etc ? thank you
Record a video on how to download the map to the watch. Thank you
More content coming next week! I’m off on a trip at the moment 🙈
Be careful - if you put one more watch on your wrist, they reach critical mass and explode. 🤣
🤣🤣🤣 can confirm this is 100% accurate

It's a pan
Haha! A very cool pan if I might say 😝 I do have tiny wrists for a dude 👍🏽
