Hi Des: first and foremost, thanks for the time and dedication put into this review. Suunto is a brand that I deeply hold dear up to the Ambit 3 Peak. I currenlty own a Suunto 9 baro Titanium and really like it BUT as a brand, the unit has been left behind in terms of software upgrades. Now in terms of the Suunto Vertical, all of your highlights are spot on, particularly the design and usability. Suunto has a soul of their own but with a price. Would see how it performs through time. Cheers form Mexico.

Their timing is impeccable. Was going back and forth between the Coros and Fenix and neither really pulled me in, but this Vertical is just perfect for all my needs. It is feature packed, but there is something to be said about the simplicity of Suunto approach. Big positive are the battery life, better screen and better maps. Slight negatives are no topo maps and the screen is the flashlight instead of a dedicated component. Will hopefully pick up the titanium version end of this month or start of next, excited!

That flashlight on the side of new Garmin watches is a gimmick. It is useful for finding black shoes on the bottom of a car trunk at night, but Suunto screen light might do that as well. If someone is really outdoors a Petzl headlamp is sure something one brings for an overnight hike or to run at night. So an urban gimmick, to show colleagues at work or use in a bar when suddenly the lights go off 😉
The maps, the minimalist outlines are again part of the charm navigating outdoors. You see the topography, you see the road names.. I'm speculating, but it might be a different perspective on how to enjoy nature. One way is to explore with your eyes and senses first and technology follows and supports you (if you get lost), the other opposite way is Apple way, where the technology is first and is there to guide you and you are just a passanger going left and right..
      Enjoy your Suunto!

I really like this watch: great battery life, nice design and good feature set. The only thing I don't seem to like is the lag in the interface. I've had a Polar Vantage M2 for around 2 years and whilst it is true it has some delays here and there randomly and you kind of get used to it when you use it, this watch seems to do it every time in the parts the UI has some problems and these parts are the equivalent common I use in my watch like, every day. For a "cheap" watch like the M2 it is kind of acceptable, and I don't mind it much using it every day, but on a watch this expensive it's kind of letdown.
I'm considering on upgrading my M2 for a more rugged built watch as I do quite a lot of mountain biking now, along with its relatable smashing and crashing 😅 and also the outdoor features of these watches are a good addition to it, I like the Polar ecosystem but the Grit X Pro is getting outdated because of the competition and kind of fast. I will wait a while more (also while I save as these are not cheap toys hehe) and I hope Polar can catch up to the competition, either way there are very compelling good options out there now.

Thank you Des. Your extensive knowledge about the products you are reviewing is obvious, with you obviously recalling everything without having to read it. The main thing that keeps me with Garmin in the extensive data I have stored on their GC website. I am reluctant to use subscription based alternatives like Strava. Also, I am currently using my trusty Fenix 6s. With the battery life fading I am thinking about a possible replacement. My first thought is the Enduro 2 for its huge battery capacity, but I am also tempted by the display on the Epix model. There are rumours about an Fenix 8 which might combine these 2 features. What to do? And thanks also Des for continuing to leave out distracting music in your clips, so very common on other channels.

I have been using a Suunto watches for several years starting with the Ambit 3 Sport. My last watch was the 9 Baro Titanium and was about to move back to Garmin as I did not see any really great upgrades to the watches after. I was contemplating my next watch purchase and leaned towards another Garmin. However, I saw the advert on the Vertical and watching your review, I was happy to see that Suunto upped its game and ended up purchasing the Vertical. 2 week review of the Vertical and why it is ultimately not the watch for me...today. First I love the design (one exception) and feel of the watch and the software and hardware are getting there for Suunto. 2 reasons I am sticking with Garmin. Garmin race predictor helps tremendously when training for marathons. Might be psychological on my part but I need it. Secondly as much as I like the look of the Vertical, the watch lugs sit too high up and dig into my wrist. I've never had a watch do that and the Garmin watches lay much flatter.

I really like this watch! However, I'm having a hard time deciding between this and the Forerunner 965, Fenix7 (or SS variant). But what seems to be an issue is the UI lag, and the poor heart rate results, based on other videos I've watched. I have a Venu 2 right now, and I love it, but I want to upgrade to a different watch that has better training info. On my mind is the Coros Apex 2, as well. Ah, the difficulty in so many choices. 3,5 months, that's the period my Suunto 9 Baro worked. After that, important malfunctions appeared. On a 6 km run, the watch reported a difference of 800 m. (less). The support doesn't care at all about customers. I contacted 3 shops and all informed me that they stopped working with Suunto due to horrible customer service, and I fully agree. The answer provided by Suunto was "move your hands each time you make steps, as this is the only way for the watch to approach the movement" ! Amazing, and no solution. While I like the Titanium Solar model (the ss version is even heavier than the 9Baro), I just don't find it to be a good value in comparison to the Garmin Fenix 7 Solar Sapphire, at least in GBP. As a watch guy, everytime I see a 49 or a 50mm case size I’m always hesitant to look away cause I think that it’s just ginormous but seeing the vertical on YT and a man with a smaller wrist size, looks wearable I think it’s due to the circular design, and the lugs to stick out too far. To me it looks like it’s a 42 or 45mm in size

Suunto fixed everything that was wrong or lacked in its previous watches with Vertical. I wish i had the money

Always excited to see what Suunto is cooking up. But always disappointed when it arrives. Seems like they're always playing catchup to the likes of Garmin, rather than carving out their own path ahead.

Another great review, Des! You always hit that sweet spot of concise, yet complete. I have the 9 Peak, and the display is the only pain point for me. I also have the Suunto 7, which has probably the best display of any watch I’ve ever owned. This one is mighty tempting- better features + improved display? I’m there!

Coros Chinese made, Garmin Taiwan made, suunto Finnish made no comparison in quality

I’ve owned a couple of Suuntos and I’ve had to replace or service them all multiple times. The hr monitor has been so inaccurate and their customer support has been absolutely horrendous so even if this was a mere $200, I still wouldn’t invest. Ever since the company changed hands the only top spot they’ve earned is for worst customer service. For a premium product, it’s unacceptable. Not for me

Why buy suunto? The are several years behind Garmin which has better maps , better screen, better music, more smart features like Garmin pay and more sports metrics like body battery and more...

Because not everyone needs a smart watch but a sports watch... I don't want to talk over the watch (I'm sick of talking on the phone too), I don't want music on the watch or to pay for things with it... I want a watch that measures precise sports achievements and get certain notifications from the phone and nothing more.

Suunto 9 baro titanium. The watch is complete crap. After 3 years they simply did not boot after discharge. No reflashing helped. The support service said, wait for the firmware update. And it may never happen again. I will never buy a watch from this company again.
