    • @ActiveIdeas
      @ActiveIdeas  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      Last weekend I finished the Arc Of Attrition 100 mile race. All I used was the Suunto! The clear strengths were battery life (I ran for 34 hours with mapping and finished with 32%), accuracy of compass (it’s the best in the market), accuracy of gps (it the best in the market) and enjoyed the style of maps. It’s clear weakness was struggling with a 100 mile GPX file.. rather than load every data point, it’s like it took averages.. I’ve not seen my Suunto do this before so I’m confused as to why this happened but it made it hard when it stopped following the track and the line just skipped to the end of the trail so if there was a fork splitting the trail into two I’d have no idea which way to go. Wasn’t a massive issue but I’d did seem that people with Garmin’s were not suffering with this course data limit. 100 miles is a lot of data lol. Anyways, all the best and any other questions, don’t hesitate to ask 🔥

      Really on the fence about replacing my 1st gen Apple Watch Ultra with the Suunto race. As good as the Apple Watch is, useful health metrics and navigation based training just doesn’t seem to be its strong point. Still feels to much like a smart watch. And obviously the battery sucks. Would you recommend the Race given what I have said. Thanks.

    This channel is great! But I have a question. Which watch is better in your opinion? suunto race or fr955? in Poland they both cost the same. I know the differences between them, but I have no experience with sports watches. bike, mountains, running, hikihg, altimeter, navigation accuracy, heart rate, stress level, steps. I don't care about the display. which one would you choose? Regards!

    • @ActiveIdeas
      @ActiveIdeas  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      It is no comparison! With the Suunto Race you’re getting a titanium casing, Sapphire glass (bulletproof durability), amoled display (good for map clarity), unreal battery life, massive screen (good for big numbers and a large map), you get the turning crown for zooming in/out/scrolling, superior compass, one of the most accurate gps’s on the market (second to the vertical 🙈).. just to name a few highlights. You mention heart rate accuracy, this is definitely the Race’s major floor and would be much better on the 955. The race is acceptable for activity AVG heart rate, HRV and Spo2.. but in terms of knowing your zones and max heart rate I’d take what the race says with a pinch of salt. The 955 is also SUPER lightweight.. in this channel I have some videos of me attaching a nylon strap and get the weight down to about 40g 🤯 The 955 also great for training data (training readiness, training status, and I believe hill/endurance score is on the 955), great for nerds like me who like their numbers 👍🏽
      The 955 is a great watch (i was so excited when this came out) but if they’re the same price 100% get the Race are my personal thoughts 🌟

      Sounds like you enjoy an Amoled screen if you got the Epix and are interested in the Suunto Race! I’d say stay clear of Coros atm because unfortunately they don’t have Amoled yet. The Suunto Race is an undeniably great deal.. it undercuts the market massively and I would say has better gps too (even compared to Epix Pro). If you don’t care about notifications and smart phone features I think you’ll definitely get on with the race. Another watch to check out is the Polar Git X2 Pro.. Amoled screen and abit cheaper than Epix, still twice the price than a Race though 🌟

      @JustinRichway lag is non existent now. The animation is not as smooth as an Apple Watch but just as good as other sport watches (Garmin, polar). HR still needs improvement, to be fire to Suunto they do keep bringing us heart rate updates which do improve the experience.. it does seem the hardware itself is limited though. In my experience the HR is perfect for sleeping HR, sleeping HRV, for runs, and indoor cycling.. and most workouts AVG heart rate is the same as my strap. It will struggle to catch your true resting heart rate and your true MAX ❤️ Hope that helps mate 🌟

    • @ActiveIdeas
      @ActiveIdeas  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for the comment mate ❤️ It does seem improvement is needed in the TBT department when picking through features with a fine comb. But in real world use (when hiking, training or racing) the way the Turn by Turn navigation works has never bothered me and I’ve never noticed it being bothersome, it’s always got the job done without hiccups. It’s worth noting that you can spend lots of time within the Suunto App (or other map creation platforms) creating the perfect GPX to fine tune how many turn by turn navigations you want which could help if you’ve got lots needlessly close together like I did in this video haha. Back to safety, in the mountains, walking in a straight line to the starting point - sorry, but this is total idiocy and usually the best way to end your life :)
    More seriously, Suunto has very poor navigation options in mountainous terrain: the view is only 2km, no access to the compass while displaying the saved GPX route, Find Back in the mountains only makes sense when displaying the saved route at the same time (as it was in older models), then you can see where the starting point is in relation to the displayed map of a tiny 2km area (often completely useless in the mountains without contour lines anyway).
    In general, Suunto is ok for walking in the park, but going to the mountains is a bad idea, especially since Suunto is removing more and more basic navigation tools from its watches.

    • @ActiveIdeas
      @ActiveIdeas  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

      Hey Maszop, all comments welcome here! Even slightly critical ones ;) Firstly, I’ve got to give Suunto Credit.. recently on my trip to south wales with Mikaela we did get slightly lost after summiting Pen Y Fan and trying to circumnavigate back to the car via an alternate route (creating a loop); this was a cool route/GPX we’d downloaded off the app “AllTrails” with good reviews. Peaking at 2900ft, heavy rain and strong wind gusts. Not a dangerous situation, we were fully prepped for all scenarios and having fun, but it was annoying because we were both super tired and had work the next day; time was of the essence. The route comes off the beaten track and down a massive hill through steep ankle-high brambles and for about 50m there’s no clear pathway as you walk downhill from one track to another track lower down. Both Coros and Garmin let me down where Garmin had completely lost gps and the Coros compass wasn’t working accurately enough to follow (Mikaela wearing the Coros, and me wearing Suunto on one arm and Garmin on the other). Suunto, on the other hand (no pun intended haha), was flawless with its gps acquisition and with how responsive the compass is inside of the watch I was always able to follow the map in the correct direction; I relied on it for much of this route. It’s such a small detail but the insanely high accuracy of the Suunto Compass is for me why they excel in “the mountains” (in the UK our hills are tiny haha). The most out of my comfort zone I’ve ever been was Crib Goch, a grade 1 scramble, I have a terrible fear of heights. This route is highly exposed and when you get to the pinnacles you have to traverse to the other side of the mountain.. for this manoeuvre I’d personally prefer a Suunto because I know the direction it’s pointing is 100% the direction I should go.
      Saying that, i do agree that 2km is far too small. It was only a few months back we were limited to 500m so I hope in future updates this 2km limit is increased! 🤞🏽
      During ‘Find Back’ you can access the map by pressing the crown. It will show the map and the breadcrumb trail (the route you’ve walked), it also shows your starting location as a final destination so you have a clear marker to aim for. It’s completely up to the user to take the most effient route (the straight line lol) or follow their breadcrumb trail footsteps within this mode. Granted I probably would have shown that we could access the map but I was in a park I know well and the starting location was quite literally in a straight line away from me with no obstructions.
      Lastly, you can definitely see contour lines on the Race/Vertical since the recent map updates but only between 25m-200m, not at 0.5km, 1km & 2km. It would also be cool if in future updates the user has more control over how to view their maps.
      Anyways, thanks for the comment 🌟 Always trying my best here, and finding the balance between an insightful video, an engaging video and my free time (takes a long time to edit) is a hard one but I hope I helped 👊🏽🔥

      If your idea of “lost in the mountains” is expecting a gps to reroute you onto a different trail……then you aren’t really lost nor remote.
      When you are off trail or the trails aren’t on map or just stop, then you will be wishing you had this because the gps is soo accurate, 2nd to none.
      This is speaking from actual experience of using this feature…in the mountains…off trail.

      You have GPS everywhere nowadays, in watches, phones, dedicated devices - there's nothing to get excited about. What is important is the whole thing combined: GPS, compass, map, GPX route, altimeter, ease of use in difficult conditions (physical buttons), contour lines and the size of the area displayed on the map - Suunto looks very poor here. In the latest models it is not possible to conveniently use all these functions at once, which is completely incomprehensible in this type of watches. This is an obvious standard for other manufacturers.
      Currently, Suunto watches do not show an area larger than 2 km, which is completely incomprehensible, with a loaded GPX route (which is obvious during any major trip to the mountains) you do not have easy access to the compass, Find Back function and many other basic tools.

      @@ActiveIdeas My comment sounded quite harsh because what I wrote about used to be in Suunto watches, but over the last few years it has been systematically removed with each new model - recently they removed the contour lines in the 500m-2km view. Probably you noticed that when making this video that it's impossible to see and use all of this tools without completely switching the navigation modes. Either a gpx route, or a compass, or distances/elevation to a given POI/Waypoint, or Find Back. To check it in the field, you have to do a lot of clicking, it's quicker to take out a map or your phone. Optimally, it would be like before: a map with a loaded GPS route, clicking and switching to the next screen with e.g. a compass, the next one shows poi/waypoints, statistics, elevation plot, etc. This is how it is in watches from other manufacturers, this is how it was in older Suunto models.
      Thanks for great videos 👍

      So in your opinion, what's a good watch for trail running? I have a Garmin 735xt and I wish there was a way to show in a screen the elevation profile of a gpx course you are following. How long will this uphill trail be? This would make a huge difference to me xd. Thanks.
