“difficult to program not using collision detection” you can just use a polar coordinate radius offset based on angle. Which is how I would draw a toothed wheel, animating the paw knowing the radius of the toothed wheel at any given angle would make it simple. I actually came here looking for how the cable retract systems release the paw when a gentle pull and release is performed. Still haven’t figured that out unless it’s just a speed thing.

Now to lower a load, how this mechanism works or is switched?
To lower the load, you will need to disengage the pawl. Since there is no locking now, load is free to move down.
