I've had T-mobile for years, been in the Philippines for over 2 years and never once had a problem. I have the international plan and use my unlimited data all the time. I use wifi when I'm in my condo or in places that have free wifi, which isn't many here in the Philippines. I've never had a problem with my data. When I travel to other countries in SE Asia as soon as I land I get a message welcoming me to the country and that my data plan is on. I've never purchased a sim card in any country I've visited because my data works so well.

I have a US number from T-Mobile also for almost 1 year now. I had them convert it to an eSIM and then I have a local globe physical SIM installed so I can use the same phone for local and U.S. instances. Two phone numbers on the same phone. Use the local data so you don’t need roaming. But I still have voice calls and sms going to my US number. Not sure if all phones can do this but I have an iPhone 12- so nothing too special.

I have used T-Mobile for years. Pre-paid plan. $15 a month. $17 after taxes. Unlimited text and calling. You get more data over the years. I have 3 or 4 GB of data. More than I need as I am mostly on wifi everywhere.
I use wifi calling in Philippines and worldwide also. I never have a problem calling or texting to anywhere in the world.

thanks, Gio for this video. I was going to use T Mobile also, but now I'm wondering about Tello. Seems the cost is about half of what T Mobile charges for the same service. did you look into that carrier. I'll be coming to the Philippines in feb, going to Iloilo to start my journey because the infrastructure, the bicycle lanes, and the cleanliness of the city appeals to me more than Cebu, which was my pick for over a year. I'm lucky I've been living a good life here in Texas, but now, being 74, I want to enjoy some relaxation and different way of living. I've been to Europe in my earlier years, now it's time to see what SE Asia has to offer. Also, I've heard that Charles Schwab won't let you have an account there if you don't carry a large balance or a US address. so many different phone plans, not sure which one I should use and if it will work with my bank here in Texas.

I think Schwab declined you because they couldn't verify a physical address. They require residency in the USA. There's other benefits to keeping a US residency including free emergency medical internationally with Medicare advantage, no motel or car fees when in America, and having a backup plan if something changes in the Philippines.
There are many options for banking and USA phone number. I chose the least cost option of using a Philippines bank and Google voice. But Thanks to you I enjoy Amazon shopping free of shipping costs.

I would buy the $1,000 solar battery and have a gasoline backup generator just in case the sun did not shine.. most all of the male order services in the Philippines have solar set ups so you can purchase.. just do your homework and research..

Gio… Charles Schwab has customer service. Just call them and tell them your situation. They may “ok” you or explain why it’s a “no go” or they may have a simple workaround for you. I have Schwab. Been using them successfully for years. I signed up while in the US with a US phone number and a US mailing address (mail forwarding service) with a real street address not a P.O. Box address. I told Schwab I was going to the Philippines for at least 6 months. No problem they said. Years later I still use them and they know I’m still over here. Try calling them.

Gio, you mentioned you used a travel mail service, I assume to receive your US mail and either forward to you or hold it. Would you share information on the company and how the service works, if it is secure and reliable in forwarding items to you? Thanks.

Hey Gio! I’m in L.A. where there is a PNB (Philippines National Bank). Do you think it would be wise to open an account here before moving to the Philippines???

Probably just cause you more problems than if you would just wait until you get your ACR card and open up an account in the Philippines.. also every Bank even with the same name Bank have different rules for each Bank.. if one Branch turns you down go to the next one and keep going and you will find one that will open up your account.. the Philippines reminds me of the USA in the 50s and 60s especially in the deep South where the governments right hand did not know what the left hand was doing.. actually the Philippines remind me of living in the deep South USA in the 50s and 60s.. today in the USA even the poor people live in generic houses.. in the Philippines everybody's house and business seems to have its own identity and to me that is refreshing.. I do not like the feeling I'm living in a science fiction movie or a compound for crazy people where everything looks the same.. I am a country boy and if possible I will always live in the rural areas close to the important things I need 😮

    Hi Gio,
You explained why you keep a Philippine phone, but can you go over the advantages of also having a US phone?
    Thanx,
    Dan H

You don't need two phones. I use only one and it can do the calls for US and local since I have a biz account thru Verizon and a local Philippine account thru Smart communications here in the Philippines. Plus another option you can go with to call the US is go thru Viber with their international call plan of $4.00.

Great advice. I have NFCU and Schwab. Schwab is great because all the international ATM fees are refunded at the end of the month. You can pull 20K out at a time at 7 11's here.. so i do that. maybe 6 pulls of 20K each month on the average. and I always get my $30 dollars or so worth of ATM fees reimbursed at the end of the month with Schwab. So infact its like getting your money here without at fees at all. I'll have to get a T mobile acct when i'm in the states next time. Cause it would be nice to have an American number to be able to reset your pw or what ever with your bank or other entities you deal with in the usa.

With regard to Charles Schwab and the failure to launch, did you set up your account with a US or PI address? CS offers trading and investing for expats but only those living in certain foreign countries. Philippines is not one of those countries. Not sure why CS doesn't want to be involved with those living in PI but if you check out their website it does show what countries expats can live in and still invest with CS. Good video, please keep up the good work.

If Charles Schwab delcined me, the first thing I would check is my credit score and if thier are any glitches there. There could be a error in your financial history.

One of the best things about living in the Philippines is that it is mainly a Cash society..
Just use your debit card to access your cash...
    Plan your larger purchases..
    Only carry what you need...
Unless someone physically robs you. That is what you may lose.
Its simple and much safer than the electronic ways..
Just stck with simple and have more than one sources of money.

Gio,,, with regards to your Charles Schwab account, to my understanding after going up here locally and trying to open that account myself I found that you had to have a minimum of $25,000 in the account to open it and then there was other criteria’s you had to meet …
I chose not to open an account though I could I chose not to. I don’t want somebody controlling my money to the point where I have to have a certain amount of money in their bank. Hope this helps Andrew from Nashville, Tennessee
