The schematic diagram on the video is the reference diagram for current boost regulator from the motorola 7812 datasheet. The more 12 Ohm resistors you add in parallel, the less total resistance as an output load and thus the current draw rises. I'm not sure though that, this way is the best for testing switching mosfets.

I think it is great that the seller wrote "fake" right on the package. It really saves you time. You can throw them straight into the garbage. I have some 2n3055s with the tiniest die you have ever seen. I don't think you can buy genuine power transistors on eBay or Aliexpress. If you are only switching an amp or two they will probably be just fine. Great test rig by the way.

    Hi Leif:
Thank you for putting the video, this may help many unsuspecting people who buy from companies in China where components are recovered and resold as new. This I have suffered with Utsource that sells fake components and in most cases their shipments are delayed up to 2 months, honestly this although it does not seem very serious, but many of us do not give importance.
    Regards.

This problem gets worse and worse also with most of ebay sellers, esp. from china. You can be nearly 100% sure you get fake if you order cheap mosfet, igbt or other transistor and even most ICs are counterfeits. Other methods of testing is measuring the Rdson (Drain-Source-Resistance when on under Load) and measure the drop voltage and divide by the current to get resistance. In most cases it is 2-5 times higher than specification in datasheet. Also the gate capacitance with fake mosfets will normally be lower due to smaller die and less micro-transistors on the die. I just bought fake IRFP4768 and IRFP4668 from China - was hoping for good but obviously fake. So you have to buy from local trustworthy suppliers ;-)

So the function of the 7812 is to keep the Mosfet output (drain) at 12 V?

Hi, thank you very much. Good, informative video. I have to test some power devices pretty shortly and will use my DC electronic load instead of resistors, a little more flexible. Thank you very much!

For the NPN transistor I use 7912,, but you can use it but if you redesign it, you just need a reference voltage to Get the transistor to give out approx 12 V, 12 volt was ok for me since I have a lot of 12 Ohm resistors and 32v power supply, that give me 20 V over the test transistor, ANg again give me power loss of 20w with 1A, 40w with 2A and so on .

Almost all transistors I've bought from China (AliExpress / Alibaba / eBay) are fake. Even "recovered" items are sometimes re-labeled (but is off course not the same part and certainly does not have the same characteristics).

I done dumped out 300 hundred dollars trying to make a voltage booster on transistors they keep blowing I think cause they can't handle a 20% of there amps on data sheet.have not checked the gate voltage to see full turn on turn off but I tried diffrent transitors and some held at about 65% amp rating if not more they were awezeicc transistors .going to try order from digikey or mouser now and see what happens

The Circuit at video are not 100% stabil for all transistors I discover that after I make this video.

I got a strange idea for a bad fake one, get a high voltage transformer and plug it in the wall and put the output of the transformer on the transistor and make a single use fire starter XD. (!WARNING! DO OUTSIDE, HIGH RISK OF FIRE!) don’t forget to record it.

Hi, the problem is that it Is so many sellers that sell fake stuff, It is actually hard to find someone that sell real stuff, and I have buy a lot before I found out it all was fake, both from Ebay and Alix, I did report it but nothing happend, Some sellers have pitures of the original but send fake.

For a non-destructive test, saturate the MOSFET, and measure the Rds On. If you apply 1 amp across the drain-source junction, measuring the voltage across those terminals with the gate-source junction supplied with the specified voltage, you can compare your readings with the rating listed in the Datasheet, and tell if the transistor under test meets specifications for that type number. (at 1 amp, the voltage across the drain-source pins is exactly proportionate to Ohms) If the on-state resistance is higher, it's a fake. If the resistance is close to rated on-state resistance, then, it's worth the SOA (Safe Operating Area) testing. The devices you have in this video might be mislabeled IRF9510, with an Rds On of ~1.2 Ohms. It's only rated to dissipate 20 watts, which guarantees, that it will fail this test. The Rds On test would reveal the high on-state resistance, which would immediately disqualify it.

      Rds ON
      not
      Rds On
You have not yet learned the difference between ON / OFF ( and ) on / off
They sound the same but they are not the same and are used in a different context.
When you are referring to switching it is always ON / OFF
      written in the ALL CAPS
It is even written on switches but you are blind to see it
because you are not trained to pay attention to detail.
Your eyes see one thing and your brain sees something entirely different.
Your School programmed you to be a ZOMBIE
