  • My new woodworking bench inspired by Paul Sellers. My first attempt at serious woodworking and I am pleased with the results. I mostly used hand tools for the project but I did succumb to the electric drill for the larger holes for vice fixing etc.
I hope you enjoy the tour and please visit paulsellers.com/ - you too may be inspired to give it a go.

Looking great! Love Paul's videos and work methods. He is the balance to the crazy woodworking channel out there. Love his commonsense approach.
Great Job. He surely is an inspiration to new wood workers as well as your review! Its a doable thing and you have proven him right!

That's a beautiful workbench and it looks very tidy. I'm currently watching Paul's workbench series and am hoping to make one soon. I'll be over the moon if I end up with something half as good as this! Well done, you should be proud.

Beautiful job! Sellers is an inspiration all around. I'll be interested to see what more you do. I'm finishing up remodeling my house. When it's done I want to start learning to do some real woodworking and Sellers is who I look to for that.

Very Nice, like the 2 Vices.
Did I hear you say that you're making some Honey Bee Equipment for your son.
I'm a 2 year Bee Keeper and have made most of the hive boxes.
    Again Nice Job.

Hi Michael. The bee hives are on hold temporarily as I have been roped in for some DIY. My son has an old farmhouse and there is a lot of oak in the house. I have just finished building an oak frame for a partition wall - the oak will be expose so I used rough sawn oak and then weathered it. It looks great! I used mortice and tenon joints and oak pegs in the joints to draw them together.

Well, I must say, you've done an amazing job on your 1st ever workbench! I wish mine came out near as well. I'm especially jealous of the very smooth opening and closing of your vises ... mine must be out of alignment. What was your secret creating parallel rails? Very well executed and all parts appear to be completely square to each other. Well done indeed!

Hi Sue. Thanks for your comments. I can't recall having any problems fitting the vices other than some careful measuring before I drilled the holes for the guide bars. If the vice is tight you may need to shim the mounting plate that bolts to the underside of the bench to check it's square. Also check that the guide bars have plenty of clearance around the holes you drilled in the face of the bench. When I built the bench I was in the same position as Paul Sellers in that I didn't have a bench to build the bench so I also build a set of tressles based on Pauls design. I've not used them since I built the bench LOL 😃 Post some pictures of your bench 👍

Can you add a link to the vice hardware? Great bench!

I can't remember exactly where I got the two vices from but loads of people sell them. Mine probably came from Axminster Tools but Rutlands sell them. Just search for 'Woodworking Front Vice' in Google. I think they even sell them on Amazon. Classichandtools.com do a good range. I stayed clear of the Veritas vices because it just seems to me that you pay extra for a name (like most Veritas stuff) Rutland Front Vice £49.99, Veritas quick release front vice £369.00. It will cost you an extra £319.00 to save you winding a handle and being able to tell everyone how you bought the Veritas because it is the Rolls Royce of vices LOL :0)

How much room do you typically need to leave for an end vise? Going to be building this soon and plan to put an end vise on in the future, but not at the start.
