I wasn't sure if the Levels.fyi guide was truly representative across the board, but lmk if you think it's about right!
@@chloeshih Yep, they're directionally accurate on Levels.fyi. The challenging aspect of TC at Amazon is that the base salary is capped at a certain amount regardless of your level. Due to this, some employees' TC can be comprised of 40-60% stocks (or even larger % the higher your level). This makes TC hard to gauge for existing employees or for new offers when the company's stock price experiences significant movements (e.g. in 2020 vs. this month).

Hey Chloe, wow thank you for this video & for doing all this research - super informative! I’m a PM at a ~100 person startup in the Bay Area (w/ 2y exp) and wow, my jaws also definitely just dropped to the ground looking at the TC numbers you shared - I had no idea Google/Meta PMs got paid and I think it gives me a lot of perspective. Would love to get a video on what you’ve seen other startups offer even if I know it wildly ranges - while I agree money may not be everything, it’s certainly important to know if you’re being compensated fairly with others in your area! Thanks again for doing what you do 🙏
hi priscilla! of course - yes! I'm not exactly sure how I'll package the other offers. honestly I can't really say that there are trends for me to point out. it is quite possible to be paid higher than at faang because faang ladders are pretty rigid. you can also "supposedly" get promoted faster at startup environments, get to management level, and hop on over to faang so you don't have to go through the years to reach that comp bracket. AND there's stock appreciation, which is a huge component to jumping on pre-IPO unicorns that will like triple your stock value. it's just such a complicated topic. I only really touched upon offers too. but i will say that knowing what you're worth at the faang levels helps negotiation conversations with startups too. you'll know what numbers they're benching at.
Been watching a bunch of your videos. After landing a role in SF early this week, I'm moving from Australia this sunday. Thanks for all the guidance! especially loved the day in the life!

I've only given general ranges so far, but I do plan to share my personal pay breakdown later down the year! But first - we got several other videos in the queue haha. Appreciate your question!
This video was godsend to me! I needed this today! I'm offered an APM offer with a non FAANG company not in the bay area, but I still feel it's very low, considering I have 5 years of non product experience. I didn't see this question in the comments, have you found being remote changes the salary? $300,000 is a lot where I live in NC, but definitely doesn't hold the same value in San Francisco. Do companies change their salary and offerings depending on if the job is remote or not?
Yeah! Well it depends. Some companies are paying remote the same wages (like Reddit). But most tech companies will give you a pay cut depending on what tier the city is in. So I think SF and NY are Tier 1. They get 100%. LA and Seattle are like Tier 2. So the cut might be 5-10% less. And this goes on.
Hi Chloe, I love this video. It's so informative! I'm curious about the wealth aspect, especially in the case of equity. I'm in SEA but I'm so curious how equity is exercised in the US. It'd be great to have a deeper understanding on this! Thanks!
Very informative video! Thank you very much! Do you also know the main differences between levels you described? I know the description of levels can be vague but I am curious, what skill set would make you be placed in level 5 or level 4 etc when you are being interviewed. Also another aspect is: for example you are level 4 and you want to get promoted to level 5. What should I add to my experience or knowledge set so that I can get promoted?
Hi Chloe, Thank you so much taking the time to put these amazing videos together!! As a PM, how do you come up with new innovations and what are the processes that you go through in order to make the innovation a reality with an existing or new system?
I think if you truly understand your users, then it's not hard to come up with new ideas and innovations for products. You'll get feedback really fast for user pain points. If you're monetization or growth driven, you can look at growth funnels and see where the leaky points are, etc. You also just need a very clear understanding of goals to drive the right ideas.

It really is absurd! Like here I am thinking salary is everything, but equity really is the thing that gets someone to buy their first house. Also I didn't even tackle stock appreciation, which is a huge factor as well.
Hi Millie!! Oh wow I'm so new though. I have some of my tools and camera set up in the description with links! I also have hours listed so you see how long each video took me haha. I def don't think I'm a legit enough TH-camr to have a good process to share :
I'd love to share more - and I have plans to share my own personal pay history too later down this year. I'm not sure if I'm allowed to share Discord's numbers specifically, so I have to clear that first. Thanks for asking though! I'm gonna keep this on my list for sure.
Chloe great job with your content, improving a lot lately! How about a video about the different Product related roles/responsibilities that are popping up, like Product Operations, Product Marketing, and so on? Keep growing!
And typically this equity "vests" over time, meaning the longer you stay, the more stocks or options you get. They're sometimes called "golden handcuffs" because you're rewarded more for staying at a company longer.
There are many remote companies, but I'm unsure about international regulations. Since remote policies are so new, I'd just keep finding job reqs that say "remote" and try applying to see if they're open to international talent!
Yeahh some of these numbers are outta control especially when I see how young people are. There are definitely people in their 30s who just make it at L4 or L5. It's a windy career path and there are so many variables. :/ But yes some of these numbers are crazy.

I think majoring in CS would’ve saved me headaches & made me more money (civil engineering is tragic) lol I’m considering doing a masters in software engineering but I’m scared to take the leap
I've been searching for this numbers for a while and I'm glad you shared them, Chloe! But I guess they vary a lot from country to country. I am an APM in a big tech company in Brazil and, doing some quick math here, I can assure you that my TC is less than US$ 30k (our currency is really devalued right now). It is a whole different scenario, I think it is not fair to make this comparison at the end of the day. But it makes me think of seeking oportunities abroad.

Thank you ChloChlo, this is insanely inspiring! Also, love the design and overall feel of all the videos 💛
Hi Artur!! Ah so glad you enjoyed the video. And thank you for enjoying the design and vibes ~ I'm not a great designer so it takes me a bunch of effort to pick out fonts, colors, and music.
@@chloeshih I'd be happy to help with the designs if you ever need a hand 👋
Data science is definitely higher paying than product management.
So informative! Good job news reporter Chloe!
Hehe thank you ~
Loved your video, Chlo! Great topic and delivery! ❤️❤️
Glad you liked it!!
Absolutely smashing! Love the production Chloe 🌎🥳
Great video! Thanks for sharing this info. 😁Can’t wait to hear what you love/don’t love about being a PM.
Yeee! Can't wait to post that as well!
I love your videos! Can you show us how you edit them 😍 what software do you use?
I share some of my stuff in the description! But basically I use Premiere Pro!
what are those round coffee tables/chair there? I live in a studio in nyc, and those would look great in front of the couch hahaha thanks!
oh it's a pouf from cb2!
@@chloeshih yesssss thanks!
Thanks, Chloe! Im PM in Brazil, I love your videos!
Equity portion is insane!
It really is absurd! Like here I am thinking salary is everything, but equity really is the thing that gets someone to buy their first house. Also I didn't even tackle stock appreciation, which is a huge factor as well.
Awesome as always. Going to keep plugging away with the applications!!
Wooo!! Keep it up Johnny!
I love your content, it's so good! Would love to learn more about how you started your channel, your camera set up, and editing process.
Hi Millie!! Oh wow I'm so new though. I have some of my tools and camera set up in the description with links! I also have hours listed so you see how long each video took me haha. I def don't think I'm a legit enough TH-camr to have a good process to share :
omgg new video so excited
yay!! so glad you like it!
Would really be curious what a place like Discord pays? It's a tech company but not a big tech. Can you give us a range Chloe?
I'd love to share more - and I have plans to share my own personal pay history too later down this year. I'm not sure if I'm allowed to share Discord's numbers specifically, so I have to clear that first. Thanks for asking though! I'm gonna keep this on my list for sure.
I’d be curious to know this as well.
Chloe great job with your content, improving a lot lately! How about a video about the different Product related roles/responsibilities that are popping up, like Product Operations, Product Marketing, and so on? Keep growing!
Hi Gustavo! Oh yes I really do want to branch out. Good suggestion!
Should I get some courses for product managers or MBA in marketing will be enough?
Lol love the way you deliver content ✨👏🏽
thank you, janine, haha ~
love your energy Chloe! :)
can someone please explain me what equity means in a compensation?
Ownership in the company. Most companies either give restricted stock units or stock options
And typically this equity "vests" over time, meaning the longer you stay, the more stocks or options you get. They're sometimes called "golden handcuffs" because you're rewarded more for staying at a company longer.
Young Clo!! The most gangsta PM name on the block evaaaaa
YUNG CHLOOOO
Hi Chloe.. what locations are these TC’s based on? Thanks
primarily the SF bay area! I have some footnotes on whether they're NYC or seattle based too
What software do you use in you product management career?
Like at my daily job? I use Asana and Notion at work these days. It varies by company!
This vid so informative! Thanks for sharing and this will help ppl who are dreaming to be future PM (me!!)
So glad it's helpful!! :D
Such an informative video. Thank you Chloe 🙏🔥🔥💯🙌👍
Glad it was helpful, Emily!
Thank you for this video ! Knowledge is power, this video provides a lot of value🤩
it truly is!! glad you find the video useful!
Thank you so much Chlo. I am a PM for a startup in Nigeria. Is it possible to work remotely for a US-based company, from Nigeria?
There are many remote companies, but I'm unsure about international regulations. Since remote policies are so new, I'd just keep finding job reqs that say "remote" and try applying to see if they're open to international talent!
@@chloeshih Thanks a lot 💜
Does anyone know info for PM's or TPMs at Tesla? Do they get a bonus?
Thanks so much for the eye opener Chloe ❤
I'm glad it was helpful to you!!
Wow this is wild
Yeahh some of these numbers are outta control especially when I see how young people are. There are definitely people in their 30s who just make it at L4 or L5. It's a windy career path and there are so many variables. :/
But yes some of these numbers are crazy.
Questions to all pm here
Are u satisfied with salary you are getting being a PM rn?
Hey chloe im 14 currently and my dream job is to work at discord as a software engeineer one day if its still avaliable do u have any tips on what i should start doing early on that could help in the future
i get so much inspiration and hope from watching your videos. once i land my data science internship, ill be sure to buy u boba :)
Hi Alyssa!! Omg yaassss boba pls hahah. Also congrats on getting a DS internship! Those are hard to get into!!
Oh wow. I'm a group product manager in the PH and get 40k per year with 15 hours / day work. This sucks.
Could you do the entertainment space for a PM? Love your videos :)
Hi Tara! Oh interesting. What specifically about the entertainment space are you curious about?
@@chloeshih Music and Film
Hi Chloe, thank you for all your interesting videos.
I am graduating in May and have more of a business background (bachelor in Economics as well as a Master's in Business, innovation, and entrepreneurship) do you think it is still possible to become PM?
I have done internships at startups/GAFAM company in account management and sales role but don't have any technical background.
Thank you very much !
Make video on skills and software required for PM
Well, you have a great heart and mindset behind finances, so your wealth is well-deserved.
Ah I'm honestly just figuring it out and it's quite daunting. Just wanted to share the little nuggets of knowledge I was able to gather in the my last few years!
Where does a Staff Product Manager fall in the chain?
Really awesome video - I feel like it's really hard to find data points on this type of stuff (probably by design... ignorance is bliss, supposedly?), so definitely appreciate the work you put into this!! Especially loved the Naval shoutout... I find the things he says always end up sticking with me the longest. Such a sharp mind.
I'm glad this video is helpful to you! And yes the naval quotes are amazing. That man has shared so much wisdom through his tweets haha
Just got a new job making $130K a year as a PM at a gas company. Turns out thats chump change compared to these companies lolz
Love this vid
Loved it 😊
Thank you! 😊
Can you do product management with a project management degree?
Yep!
So what about discord?
I’m a product manager too hi!!! ❤️❤️❤️
Omg hiiii happier!! :D
Engineers looking at this video like “glad I didn’t become a PM”
I’m assuming engineers make a lot more at the same level?
oh man engineering salaries are outta control 😓😓
And they still can't afford rent?
ty discord ping
ayeeee early crew!
Chloe I am a 3 year PM at a 10 year old company. I can throw you feedback if you need it.
Hi Tyler!! Ooh nice!! Any insights you wanna share would be great! I only have my own few jobs and friends to source from, but I know the field is so much bigger and more diverse. Feel free to share here or in our Discord. :) Tysm!!!
Amazing video 💜💜💜 what your job and where is it??? Please reply to me💞💞💞
i work at discord as a sr product manager!
This is a fantastic video. I’m so motivated so switch careers & chase the money. Lol What type of engineering did you major in?? *edit* Actually, nevermind - I’m guessing you majored in software engineering. (If I’m wrong, pls correct me!) I think majoring in CS would’ve saved me headaches & made me more money (civil engineering is tragic) lol I’m considering doing a masters in software engineering but I’m scared to take the leap
Omg do they really earn so much in SF?!
yes they do D:
I've been searching for this numbers for a while and I'm glad you shared them, Chloe! But I guess they vary a lot from country to country. I am an APM in a big tech company in Brazil and, doing some quick math here, I can assure you that my TC is less than US$ 30k (our currency is really devalued right now). It is a whole different scenario, I think it is not fair to make this comparison at the end of the day. But it makes me think of seeking oportunities abroad.
Hi Chloe, are you still hiring? I'd love to submit my application for Creative Assistant.
How would you recommend a 35 yo whose BS is in Organizational Communication buts only worked in customer service to switch to PM?
The key is to make West Coast MANGA pay while living in a tax free/low cost of living stare like Texas. :) it’s pretty wonderful ^^
OH MY GOODNESS. don't even get my started on the taxes here T_T. These california salaries are high, but the cost of living, real estate, and taxes just destroy me. T_T Y'all out there in the midwest and the south are really the ones winning
@@chloeshih lol yah, I started my career in the Bay Area and also lived in NYC then Seattle. With the pandemic I moved home to Texas and work remotely for a tech company as a Principal PM…and it’s been…good :)
Oh just noticed I used my other TH-cam account lol.
It’s absolutely insane what the Product/Tech compensation is. Many of us are getting paid what executives in other industries get paid. Even as ICs!!! My friend is an executive in the insurance company and when I share the figures you shared in the video it’s just staggering to him.
Keep up the awesome content!
