Colnago still make steel frames in house. Many or their craftsmen have been perfecting their art for years.
Here's how a Colnago steel frame is made.

To me Colnago are the best and even if they are not the best they are the most beautiful and have the pedigree, numerous stage wins and classic victories and Colnago built Merkcx's hour bike. To add a bit of clarity over what has already been said, copper plumbing pipes and circuit boards are soldered, steel bikes with lugs are brazed, old steel frames with no apparent lugs are fillet brazed, modern steel frames without lugs are largely cut and welded (not pretty but light), Capice! Other beautiful Italian bikes are available, Cinelli, Guerciotti, Pogliaghi, Daccordi, Pinarello, Gios Torino, Masi, De Rosa, and many more.

What a great thing to see. I take issue with the announcer's assertion that the hammering is inelegant. I particularly like the hammering on the alignment table, and all the skilled fabrication. Too bad we don't see a finished frame. These are truly beautiful bikes.

@@wamanning What is shown here is brazing, as the original comment correctly pointed out. Some frames are TIG welded for example, but welding by definition means melting together the same metal. Brazing is effectively glueing two pieces of metal together using a third metal, mostly bronze, as in this video but sometimes silver, which can be done at a lower temperature, reducing the risk of burning the carbon out of the frame tubes or ensuring you stay within a tighter temperature band, such as when brazing 753 or similar. Brazing, as here, involves a capillary process; braze welding does not and is generally used to join dissimilar metals.

No welding at all here. Welding is fusing metal using a temp of at least the start melting point of the base metals. Brazing doesn’t melt the base metals at all, it joins the bases by creating a metallurgical bond between a filler metal and the bases.

I’m enjoying the bike so far th-cam.com/users/postUgkxMesz3KOGEmwmvyKQfLfrRSUXLFzfVHZA My only real complaints are the brakes and the pedals. I feel like a bike designed for bigger people should have much larger pedals and more heavy duty brakes. I’ve only gotten two really good rides out of it, minimal downhill action, and the brakes feel like they’re already going out. A larger person has more momentum, so I think this wasn’t thought through very well. Also, I wear size 13-14 wide shoes. My feet cramp up on these pedals that are clearly made for smaller feet. Since I’m not a pro rider (and I don’t think many are who purchase this bike) I don’t think that the straps on the pedal are necessary at all. None of this takes away from the enjoyment I get from riding, however. I’ll just head to a bike shop to improve on a few things.

He was brazing the frame, with a type of 'brass' that is why the joints are a brassy/ goldy colour. Silver soldering is done at a lower temperature with a different material and so the joints looks 'silver'. And he said it was put on a 'Rig', it is actually a 'Jig'. He also said the Bottom Bracket was being 'Milled', it was also being 'Tapped' i.e. it was having a thread cut into it. That's the terminology we use in England anyway. Whatever, Great Frames and Videos!

+ToshiSan2 Actually it is silver solder which is between 6-10% which is goldish in colour. The silver coloured stuff is actually a tin and lead mix which is only really suitable for soldering copper such as in electronics or old school gutters and copper art.

Jacob Wallingford I now have a 2013 white colnago master and it always elicits positive comments anytime I take it out on an organized ride or gran fondo here in Colorado. It is beautiful. The bike is the lightest of my steel bikes ( I have 5) and it is my best handling and best riding bike. It is absolutely rock solid in the descent which bombing down (rough roadway, windy, and bad weather) Colorado Rocky mountain passes is always a concern. And my favorite shop Vecchio's in Boulder, CO does a thriving business on steel and titanium bikes - no carbon fiber. To be honest steel will never again attain it's former popularity but it is still a viable material and I see more carbon fiber riders coming back to steel for their in the saddle all day, soak up the road vibration types of bikes. And if you're not racing (really racing) then steel makes sense from both a cost and longevity perspective. Take a Colnago Master for a test ride (if you can find one) you might be pleasantly surprised.

Yes. IE the British Team Genesis uses the Volare 953 steel frame. Recently steel made a comeback, thanks to new high-resistance martensitic stainless alloys that are no more brazed, but TIG welded (so saving weight and enhancing stiffness in the junctions). IE a Barco steel frame size M weights 1.4 kg, that makes it competitive with every hydroformed aluminium frame (mantaining the higher elastic module, yeld point and resistance to fatigue of steel) and only 250-300gr heavier than a carbon frame of comparable resistance, that, with a UCI limit of 6.8kg for the entire bike, is not really that important.

Remember friends................, all those "in the know" know that plastic (carbon) is "better"............ Oh, Sh%tmano, too.......................

They're not welded, they're brazed or soldered.

Lets see, would you rather have a steel bike built by an experienced Italian craftsman of forty years experience or a mass produced carbon frame built by a Chinese peasant on minimum wage? Guess which bike will be ridden by your future grandchildren?

TXLorenzo How about a Carbon bike made by Italian craftsman like the C60?Any correctly constructed carbon frame will outlast a steel, aluminium or even titanium frame, as it doesn't have a fatigue life. A good carbon frame should be as good when your future grandchildren are riding it as the day it was made. Steel won't. ps I am not bias I love steel and titanium but these are the facts.

ThePaulKat The difference will be the steel frame bike is and will remain a classic style and will always appeal to the retro crowd. The carbon bike will look more like yesterday's news. I got off the carbon frame train after getting tired of paying high prices for the never ending latest tech. Buy a high quality steel frame like the above Colnago and you are done for many years.

Was loving the video until I heard the repeated use of welding instead of brazing.

Still prefer a steel frame over a carbon fiber any day never know when you're carbon frame might implode.

Why did you put music on this video? It makes it more difficult to understand what the narrator is saying. So difficult, in fact, that I made it to the one minute mark before watching something else.
