Ah the Skaven. A race so comically evil, that their own god had to step in one time just to get them to stop backstabbing each other to near extinction.
Best-Best faction.
😂 love the Skaven fun facts in the comments so far
@@DefinitelyNotDefinitiveGames You should check out PancreasNoWork's video "Do or Don't: Skaven" for all the comically horrible things the furry meance has gotten up to in Warhammer Fantasy.
If it werent for their backstabbing-disorder, then they would have conquered the world long ago.
Probably my favorite. The combination of sheer horribleness, psychotic comedic potential, mad science, magi-tech, Frankenstein monstrous abominations, dark sorcery and Saturday Morning over-the-top cartoon villainy make them the best faction overall.
With all of their DLCs, they are very varied, effective and fantastically fun to play in the game itself.
My other favorites are the Tomb Kings, Lizardmen and Empire. Out of Warhammer 3, I probably like Grand Cathay and Kislev the most, though the Ogres have their charm, and the Daemon factions have some very interesting mechanics.
They sound like the type who could totally win the race to space if they weren't so busy sabotaging each other and by extension, themselves. lol
The reason Skaven have left Ulthuan (the High-Elf Island) unscathed is double: They are terrified of Elves. And because of the Vortex, Ulthuan isn't "connected" to the rest of the world. It's floating above water. So the tunnels built by skaven that span the world can't reach Ulthuan.
Ah okay. Thanks for explaining that 🙂
Skaven are not scared of the Elves (unless they are losing), it is solely due to Ulthuan being a floating island.
Only very few Places are not reachable for Skaven like Ulthuan and the magical forest of the Wood Elfs.
The Trees are partially sentient, so when the Skaven came in range of the Roots, they began to kill them.
Queek is the leader of Clan Mors. You can pick Mors, Pestilens, Rictus or Skryre for the Vortex campaign, and each has a different leader. Clan Eshin and Moulder have different campaigns.
As for thirteen, it's the sacred number of their god. On the Council of Thirteen, there are thirteen seats for representatives from the strongest clans, but only 12 members; the thirteenth seat is symbolic and meant to represent the Great Horned Rat's place. The Grey Seers on the Council usually "commune" with him to determine his vote on most matters, effectively giving themselves an additional vote. They control just about everything, they're the Illuminati on an Illuminati-style council in a society that's already the Illuminati of the world. That's why it became a big deal when the Grey Seers' clan was marked for sacrifice.
Queek Headtaker of Clan Mors and Lord Skrolk of Clan Pestilens were the only two original clans the player could play as before DLC released and make the most sense thematically. Clan Mors in the lore has had a staggering rise to power in recent times, strong enough to rival any of the four Great Clans (Pestilens, Skryre, Moulder and Eshin). They're seen as dangerous upstarts and many on the Council of Thirteen, of which their leader is a member, want to knock them down a peg or two (or eliminate them completely). Pestilens is distrusted in general because they're seen as religious extremists and their clan attempted to overthrow all of Skavendom in ages past. Either (or both) of these clans being marked for sacrifice would knock out several birds with one really big piece of warpstone.
just as a technical note Queek isn't the leader of Clan Mors. he's the Legendary Lord but Clan Mors is actually led by Warlord Gnawdwell. Queek is Gnawdwell's protege and right-hand man
it's a similar case for all the other playable clans. Rictus is actually lead by Warlord Kratch Doomclaw, Pestilens by Arch-Plaguelord Nurglitch VII, Skryre by Lord-Warlock Morskittar, Eshin by Grand Nightlord Sneek, and Moulder by Packlord Verminkin. in each case the actual clan leader is more of a leader than a fighter (some like Gnawdwell most definitely can fight but just don't) so the in-game faction has their most competent underling as the faction leader.
@@Eclipsed_Embers Yeah, I kinda simplified that one. Gnawdwell and the others are all serving on the Council of Thirteen and leave their seconds in charge of their clans.
@@Eclipsed_Embers The leader of the god damn pack of ninja rats is called "Sneek"
I can't with this. The more I learn of the rats the more I love em.
Thanks for helping break this down further for us so we can understand more what’s going on. And for clueing us into why 13 is a special number for Skaven 🙂
If you two have an interest in learning more about Warhammer fantasy in general, I’d recommend a channel known as the Book of Choyer. They do narrated long videos about certain things within Fantasy. Such as the Chaos Gods, explaining their ideologies. Or even going over certain characters/events. So if you’re looking for longer more immersive videos to discuss, that channel will not disappoint.
they made a very well illustrated origin of the skavens myth:
th-cam.com/video/HdrCeraprBo/w-d-xo.html&ab_channel=TheBookofChoyer
I highly recomendem as well.
yes their origin of the skaven aswell as their Skaven clans vids are pretty amazing.
Great video about the Skaven in question is this link th-cam.com/video/HdrCeraprBo/w-d-xo.html , great introduction of the Skaven and how scary they are.
yes their videos and narrations are the best
1:15 - Reason why Ulthuan (the home of the High Elves) has no rat men is because the donut itself is floating, its not connected to the earth itself. Its held afloat by the Great Wortex and stones that hold it aloft as anchors. Destruction of one is such a big deal that its inciting incident for biggest rivalry between one Eltharion the Grim and Grom The Paunch (I will let you decide who is the elf and who is the goblin) :D
😎👍🙂
Ah yes-- the faction that mixes magic with World War 1 tech and tactical nukes that is fueled by magical uranium
😁
Skaven are a great pastiche of us, 20th century humanity. Obsessed with progress, petty advantage and caring nothing for each other or their environment. They're also hilarious as they are unashamedly cowardly and weak, and consider both of those things marks of greatness!
😂 gotta love how they think their weaknesses are strength.
@@DefinitelyNotDefinitiveGames In one of the Gotrek and Felix novels, one of the Skaven leaders congratulates themselves on heroically winning a battle where they only outnumbered the enemy four to one!
If you want to know the origin behind number 13 and skaven in general -
There's a 16 min video-short-story about that:
The doom of Kavzar
Give it a watch, it's really atmospheric
😎👍🙂 from a channel we’ve been told to check out
Ahaha nice timing, I have just finished skaven campaign today and saw these for the first time myself.
Perfect 😊
13 is the holy number of the horned rat.
9 is the holy number of Tzeentch
8 is the holy number of Khorne
7 is the holy number of Nurgle
6 is the holy number of Slaanesh
and the final chaos god Malal's holy number is 11 though Malal is a bit of a issue as its not really used since due to copyright issues it was largely excised from canon (its supposed to represent chaos's destructive tendencies even towards itself) being mostly replaced by two chaos gods one of athiesim, and one of undoing
Thanks for telling us about the holy numbers. Of course papa Nurgle has my favorite number 🤗
I know this was a year ago, but I can only imagine the jokes Slaanesh would make about their holy number being 6, while Tzeentch's was 9. I always imagined it as a giant boardgame for the big gods, and Slaanesh is like the new bard that wants to roll to seduce the dragon, and Tzeentch is the dungeon master/experienced player.
The birth of the skaven race has to do with 13, book of choyer will answer all questions regarding to vast warhammer fantasy lore, plus skaven only seek pure destruction unlike the other ruminous gods
😎👍🙂
The number 13 is sacred to them because a certain bell ringing that many times brought them into existance. There was a very wealthy and prosperous town where a church was being constructed, however the townsfolk were getting impatient or were struggling to complete the construction (something along those lines). So a hooded figure approached them one day and said in one night that he can finish the construction for them, all he demanded as payment was to be allowed to add a sigil of his God to the bell. They agreed, the stranger completed his work in one night. The townsfolk were celebrating until the bell tolled a 13th time, which filled them with dread thinking it was a extremely bad omen. They didn't get to regret their decision for long though as the next day the entire population had vanished, leaving the place a cursed ghost town. If i remember correctly the strangers sigil that he added is that skaven triangle you see everywhere.
Thanks for explaining significance of number 13 🙂
Love Warhammer 2. I have over 1000 hours in it. Never trust Skaven Ai. They always sneaking around, sending 3-4 armies of Skaven slaves to your door step. Breaking non-aggression pacts.(very rat like) Fun to play though.
I dunno, as long as you keep their AI on a short leash - surround their territory, keep them in non-agression without military access, exploit them for trade agreements - they can almost be a nice little vassal for whatever other race you're playing as. Unless you're going Greenskins. Then you just bulldoze them like the vermin they are.
✅ don’t trust the Skaven 😏
all the chaos gods have a specific number associated and the skaven being agents of chaos (not the same as the big 4 but still chaos) also has a number. I would recommend watching the doom of kavzar by the book of choyer it explains the skaven origin story. Would love to see the rest of the races and your opinions on them too. Love the reactions and keep up the awsome work
Thanks for the recommendations 🙂😀
It's an origin theory.
I personally love the vampire coasts story cutscenes, I hope you’ll react to those sometime
YES! When the old dude is helping the vamp chick read the map and you see her hand! So fucking cool
Those are the vampire pirates right? 😀
@@DefinitelyNotDefinitiveGames Yep 😊
The fact that the creators of this game managed to put rocketships in a colonial era setting and made it fit, is beyond me
Clan Skryre canonically build nuclear weapon so rocketships are not that impressive.
@@michastasinski2985 I mean in the real world, nukes were invented before we managed to send rockets into orbit(Technically the V2 rocket reached "space" first, but it was a suborbital, unmanned flight. So rockets are a lot harder than you'd think.
Skaven also have television (sort of).
I'm sooooooooo happy you guys reacted to this little story of how Skaven destroy the world.
Supposedly if this event really happen in the canon story, it could lead to the very finale event call the Endtime.
Which the horned rat made a pact with all of the four Chaos gods to destroy the world.
Oh cool. The rat god making a pact with the chaos gods. Interesting 🤔
@@DefinitelyNotDefinitiveGames well, the horned rat is most likely a lesser Chaos god. As far as i can tell there never was any confirmation.
The skaven are one of the more interesting races in my opinion. they are all about plotting, scheming and stealing. but are also a lot into inventing, experimenting and mutating. Most of the time they invent things they see from other races and think "we can use this!" and make their own version. from flamethrowers, to gattling guns, sniper rifles and even a nuke!
my favourite thing they can do is build a bomb under a city and just blow it up completely. "oh your capital is a level 5 city with a dock and your whole millitary infrastructure? too bad now it's ruins!" xD
also to add some context about the number 13 for skaven. All chaos gods have a number associated with them. Tzeentch is 9, Khorne is 8, Nurgle is 7 and 3, and Slaanesh is 6. The Great horned rats number just happens to be 13. some of them have real world association for their number. Khorne for example has the number 8 because he made a kinda rulebook for his followers to follow as to make him happy which is known as the eightfold path which is a parody of the eightfold path in Buddhism. While some of them have in lore implications like Nurgle and the number 3 being associated with his pox mark, which is 3 circles. and some have just for thematic purposes. so the horned rat may be associated with the number 13 because of his lore (he has 13 secret names) or because of thematic purposes.
They’re interesting display of the different levels of intelligence. They obviously are smart about technology and invention but don’t have that emotional intelligence to not get in their own way 😝
@@DefinitelyNotDefinitiveGames they do to some degree, but it is mostly based what they can get out of each other. The best example of skaven working together is probably the stormfiend. The Magnum opus of clan moulder and clan skryre.
If you guys want to learn more about the skaven and their origin, I would recommend watching the video "the Doom of Kavzar" by the youtuber "the book of Choyer". It is a great Short Story that many believe is the origin of the skaven.
You consider of also watch wuthering waves gameplay trailer
Finally! Skaven mightiest of all! Make all man-things cower and bow-bow to Great Horned Rat!
🐀👑😎🤟
Loved it, i wish you watch other races cutscenes!
We will check out more 😀
YES! I finally pestered you guys into it!
😜🤗
Only the Skaven would try to destroy the Vortex to control It, even when daemons are waiting for It to happen
Cuz their crazy? 🤪😁
@@DefinitelyNotDefinitiveGames thats an understatement.
9:50 "This is Skaven-1, this is Skaven-1 mission successful, over."
"Roger that Skaven-1 bring her home."
"Roger that Command deploying airbrakes now."
"Air brakes? what are air brakes?"
"Oh rats-"
😆 👏
I only have 1672 hours played in TWWH2. Clan Skryer is my favorite Skaven faction, "atomic bombs", "harvesters" and many other insidious machines and weapons. Gonna be so much fun to play them in WH3's Immortal Empire's campaign (coming Aug 23). But there are so many cool Skaven. Pestilence, Rictus, Moulder (Frankenstein), Eshin (assassins), Mors and many, many more not currently in the TW games.
That’s all you have played? Slacker 😜🙂
@@DefinitelyNotDefinitiveGames Haha, thanks! I guess 😂
I love this game ... So many faction in total warwarhammer 2
😎🤟
Yes-yes! Love to see more people have reaction for skavens
In the first Age of Sigmar edition, while playing Skaven, you could roll 2D6. If the result was 13, you win without having to play :P
...i have no idea if that's true but that sounds stupidly awesome.
@@dudemetslagroom8065 It was, if you can put your hands on some first edition AoS rulebooks, it should be there. Just like, when playing dwarfs, you could reroll if you insulted your oponent's beard.
😂 that’s perfect
Great reaction…the skaven are so fun…they are ingenious in building contraptions but they are also extremely cowardly.
A fun faction and maybe our favorite outside of da Orks 😁
Aw, my favorite despicable little ratmen. Skaven are truly one of Warhammer Fantasy's most well-developed races, and it's easy to see why so many in the fandom like them. If you guys enjoy them as well, I hope that you check out some of their other lore bits, be it in reaction format or in your own time! As well-done as the Total War Vortex Campaign cutscenes are, seeing some of the background on the characters that make that campaign possible can be a real treat (as long as you don't have too weak a stomach, but I assume by now you guys know what the Skaven are about, so that should be fine).
In terms of this video in particular, though, I agree with both of you on these cutscenes being very well done. Both in dialogue and atmosphere, Creative Assembly has almost proven themselves extremely biased in favor of the ratlings. In a good way, though! And it shows through the love and effort they put into them both for cinematics and gameplay.
Total War Vortex? 😯 can’t remember hearing about that before. Thanks for letting us know 🙂
@@DefinitelyNotDefinitiveGames Ah, for clarification, the Vortex Campaign is just the main campaign storyline for Total War Warhammer 2! Sorry, probably could've done a better job wording that. The cinematics in this compilation were the ones specifically made for that campaign storyline
The book of choyer have answer about the bell in the origins of the skaven video
😎👍😀
Hope you guys have been well. Definitely wish the skaven had more of a presence in 40k
We’ve been doing good 🙂
what I like about Ulthuan is that island was floating so Skaven can't go to Ulthuan from underground
would recommend looking more into the skaven lore. very interesting
We’ve had some vids recommended to us 🙂
Yeeessss!!! Always look forward to Warhammer Wednesdays haha! Fantasy this time too
🥳🥳😁
That discord notification at 10:48 confused the hell out of me.
You know, the number 13 is considered unlucky irl. Plus, according to an old warhammer legend, The Doom of Kavzar, the Skaven started their reign of terror in an ancient city that would have towered over the world, but was destroyed when a stranger enacted a spell that finished the nigh-imeasurable towers of the city. A heavy bronze bell that tolled thirteen times, turning Kavzar into Skavenblight.
If you want to learn more about warhammer in general (mix of 40k and fantasy) I suggest Baldermort's Guide to Warhammer.
Personally I enjoy his self made stories he creates to fleshout and explain the topic. Favourite video of his is Tzeentch in Warhammer
Have been told that’s a good channel. Didn’t realize he also covered Total War Warhammer 🙂
Skaven. My favorite, favorite, FAVORITE race in Warhammer 2😃
😎🤟😁🐀👑
The thirteen-thing is a Jesus and his 12 disciples reference, as the council of thirteen has thirteen seats though one remains empty for the Horned Rat. The God of Skavenkind.
Wouldn’t have thought of Skaven and rand religion like that but now it seems super obvious 😇
13 is holy-sacred number of Great Rat yes-yes
the skaven yes, yes. we kill/maim man thing's or green thing's but we scheme we must. kill kill. (this is as much skaven i can be. as i love to play these on the actual table top and ingame)
😏🐀😁
I will say you go through and look at some of sync kills and animations for an in game look. These cutscenes are also fun and fantastic and I hope you look at all of them
Thanks for the recommendation 🙂
The number 4 is bad luck in China. To the extent that buildings will skip the 4th floor on their elevators
Hadn’t realized that 😯
I love this. I'm surprised you didn't start with just the opening of each race in total Warhammer 2. I how you watch the lizardmen next
Skaven are popular faction in community and we wanted to just dive all the way in 🐀👑🙂
all gods in the Warhammer multiverse have a sacred number, 13 is the number of the Great Horned Rat
Love some wild Card Wednesday!

PREPARE TO VERMINTIDE YES-YES

The campaign narrative is a lot better and more engaging in Warhammer 3. Especially the prologue! Maybe something worth reacting to in the future?
For sure! We enjoyed the legendary lords intros for TWW 3 🙂
@@DefinitelyNotDefinitiveGames Cool. Here is a gift from me to you then. Link below is all the cinematics of the prologue. 27 minutes worth. Good place to start :)

Littlefinger is actually a pretty good description of the Skaven. An entire race of self interested scheming backstabbers.
It’s great character design 🙂
Found a new game that'll come out next year some time , ** Meet Your Maker ** , made by developers of Dead By Daylight, Set in a post-apocalyptic universe, it's a first-person building-and-raiding game where the goal is to either protect by creating an entire dungeon full of traps and enemies, while the other player will have to try and survive through the whole dungeon in order to collect Pure Genetic Material so that a disease that practically destroyed most of humanity can be cured using the Chimera Project, in simpler terms, "Create. Infiltrate. Steal. Survive. Or Meet Your Maker."
There's already a reveal trailer out by IGN, I hope you'll enjoy seeing the chaos that you could build from scratch and the panic from attempting to survive in it!
Thanks for letting us know about that new game 🙂
The fact that skaven has a council but any other race is led by monarchy shows us how democratic skaven is.
Queek Headtaker. One of the MOST hated foes of the Dwarves.
Ah yes the Skaven, everyones favorite little shits
Skaven are probably my favorite faction in WHF, just because they all suffer from chronic Elite Gamer™ Syndrome, where each individual Skaven believes they are the pinnacle of Skaven-ness, all successes are automatically because they are so awesome and any failures are because other Skaven sabotaged them. _Of course_ it wasn't because of their own actions because they are the bestest Skaven ever and it could only be a Skaven that made them fail because _of course_ all of the other races are so below the Skaven that they couldn't have.
As to why the island home of the Elves doesn't have a Skaven infestation is because it's really a floating island with a massive amount of wards to keep them out, so there is no way for the Skaven to tunnel below it (since their civilization is the Under-Empire, and that's about having tunnels and Under-cities _everywhere_ ). The only other places that don't have an issue with Skaven are the Wood Elves (because they use said wards and the Lizardmen areas because they exterminate Skaven with extreme (and I mean *extreme* ) prejudice.
One of the things that I think Total War: Warhammer did get wrong is the Skaven speech. They made it seem like it's a stutter for them repeating words or using redundant wording, when it's actually their language pattern that does it. When they want to emphasize a word, they either double say it or add a simile to it (ie: kill-kill, stab-kill, kill-maim, yes-yes, etc.). Another quirk is that every race that isn't Skaven is a thing, less than Skaven, but they attach the type of thing (ie: man-thing, elf-thing, etc.) to make it clearer what they're talking about while keeping the contempt in. The best game example of this is probably Mordheim: City of the Damned's Skaven mission briefs. The voice actor they got for it both was clearly hamming it up and got their speech patterns right, which is perfectly Skaven.
One thing that the videos don't cover all that well is Warpstone. It's concentrated magic. Magic is very powerful, but warps reality around it. Warpstone empowers magic users, has a lot of energy within it, and in high enough doses can warp physical forms. It's what allows them to have tech so far beyond the other races (gatling guns) but is super unstable (apparently in TT every time you used a unit that used it in this way, there was a chance they would just blow up), it allows them to have their monsters (take a Skaven-slave, shove as much warpstone down their throat as you can, and see what happens), and is highly addictive to Skaven. It's their currency, their basis for tech, and allows them to stand up to some of the more magically inclined races.
The Great Horned Rat is pretty troll to the Skaven tbh. Almost every time that he's appeared in front of a large group of Skaven, he's reached down and grabbed a handful of Skaven to munch on them before speaking.
Skaven = elite gamer syndrome is such a perfect concise analogy 😂 wonder if that was on purpose from games workshop 😝
@@DefinitelyNotDefinitiveGames lol probably not, since the Skaven was around since they were introduced in the late 80's, before Elite Gamer Syndrome was known.
Hey, @Definitely Not Definitive, if you guys want to learn more lore about Warhammer, I suggest Book of Choyers Channel.
2 Episode that involve Skaven are these two:

Thanks for letting us know 😀
Ok now you gotta follow it up with Origin of the skaven by Book of Choyer!!
😅
13 is just their holy number more or less its the short version ofc.
😎👍🙂
So you might be thinking it's a deep cultural thing, like in religion and folklore a meal with 13 people ends in death (Jesus, Balder) but for skaven, a lot of their lore is based on the song hickory dickory dock. The clock struck one and down they come. Instead of striking 1, it strikes 13.
14:08 Its a can now
Just remember Frankenstein is the Doctor, not the monster:-)
Book of choyer has so many good lore vids including a video for each major clan
A channel we plan on checking out eventually 🙂
I would still LOVE to see you react to "The Book of Choyer's" video titled "The Doom of Kavzar" which is without doubt my personal favorite Warhammer story ever told. The Book of Choyer is a great channel that does Warhammer Fantasy and 40k lore analysis/tellings. It is beautifully edited together, but puts less of an emphasis on visual storytelling (they do tell the story visual, to some extent, but its nothing comparable to what Total War has released). It has a great voice actor and the story, this one in particular has really stuck with me for a long time.
However, I also know you have a list of things you plan on getting to and I can admit it may not be the best in the world for a video like this. BUT, regardless, I would love to know that at some point you saw it and shared your opinion on it, lol. Whether that is just a comment or something similar. Love the videos! Thanks for all your hard work!
Thanks so much for giving us more info on that video. We’ve had quite a few people recommend it 🙂
Skaven are the funnest "villainous" faction of Warhammer. They're goofballs, but also one of the biggest existential threats to the world. If their entire race united together, they'd easily overtake the world. Skaven are also generally cowardly aside from some exceptions like Queek Headtaker, who heads his own clan. They are schemers and often backstab one another for the pettiest reasons or even just because they think someone else is acting against them.
We love the goofs in Warhammer like Orks and Skaven 😛

give us more skaven vids (moulder has some real fun with it) Or just more total war warhammer in general.
