"Stay" is a doo-wop song written by Maurice Williams and first recorded in 1960 by Williams with his group the Zodiacs. This was their biggest hit. The song was written by Williams in 1953 when he was 15 years old. He had been trying to convince his date not to go home at 10 o'clock as she was supposed to. So many other artists have recorded this song & had hits with it including The Hollies, The Four Seasons & Jackson Browne.
@@judystewart1620 You are incorrect. It was recorded in 1960. Released August 1960. It entered the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 on October 3, 1960, and reached the number one spot on November 21, 1960. By the way, if you noticed, I did not originally comment on the song release.
I just love this banger! Perhaps you don't realize that these doo wop classics are deeply ingrained in our memories. If I ever forget my name, I will probably still remember these songs.
I'm, like, 'Stay'? Do I know this one? Then, oh heck, I'm hurtled back to when I danced to this and that whole time of music. It's been there somewhere in my brain all this time, and just needed to get some airplay via dear Shawn and Mel to trigger the past. And, yeah, I might well get completely daffy, but I reckon I'll still be there doing the groove. Thank you, Joanne.
Joanne Vincent, forget my name, just take me back! I'll not only remember the songs, but all the words too! These songs let us to live in our memories for awhile and recall that "special" generation" that we were fortunate enough to have been born into.🙂
Yes. I'm an LVN at an assisted living facility. A resident, Lera, can't remember almost anything. I'll go into her room and start singing Elvis. She sings along word for word. Long time memory is the last to go. ❤️
This was a gigantic hit song, and even today, has been covered by so many Bands and artists over the last 60 plus years. Yeah, most people know this song. It's a true classic.
Super song. In Jackson Browne's version he is asking his Band to Stay and play one more tune.. the union won't mind, the promoters won't mind.... Maybe in this original by Maurice Williams and the Zodiacs the guy asking his girl to Stay ... they are all at the same dance.🤩
I do believe that Jacson Browne freestyled it to be about the stageworkers should stay a little longer, so the show could go on for the audience, and giving a thanks for their hard work. If I remember the song correct. Possibly the best song ever.
Love all of this older music. This song was eventually covered by a lot of other groups, included in their stage shows or even incorporated as an album cut because it's just a great song. If you get to the 70's, listen to Jackson Browne's version in The Load Out/Stay.
I’ve always said , if the kids listened to the music of the 60’s and 70’s as I did as a kid . They wouldn’t listen to nothing else . The music is more clearer messages to understand of peace and love . You’ll never here music more pure . Love what y’all are doing . To me it’s a blast from my past , THANK YOU 🙏🏻
These old songs will make you fall in love all over again. I loved this song as a kid and I still love it. I believe It was 1960 when this song came out.
I was 10 years old when this came out, I"m 73 now and I STAYED! I loved it then I love it NOW! I think the falsetto is one of his Zodiacs, and I think it's a fast cha cha? At least that's what we did. Whoop lah de DAH!
Maurice Williams is the one seated in front of the keyboard. Great music back then, I'm glad I grew up in the 60's, will never get tired of this kind of music. Wonderful singers then that made you won't to dance with your true love.
Shawn, Mel is right; since y’all have been listening to this great music, you have gotten younger. I know I have. Now I have to start listening to the ‘50’s channel on SiriusXM radio in my car and over the internet. You both are responsible for this and I am grateful to you.
"Stay" came out around 1960. Maurice sang the first lead, another member of the Group sang the high tenor. Later on in the Group's career Maurice Son sang the high tenor. Maurice was an exceptional keyboardist . He also wrote "Little Darling" for the Diamonds, also another Great song. I thank You both for all the Great Music.
Love this dance, sexy song! But the best thing about your reaction is the beginning when Mel tells her man, how good he looks today… this thought on her mind since the moment, after all these years! That’s so touching ♥️ thanks for showing and showing your love
One of the classiest and sexiest songs that I have heard from around 1963 is the original studio version of "Hello Stranger" by Barbara Lewis. You're right Mel...class, swag, romance...it's all there.
I have been watching your channel for several months now. I was a freshman in high school in 1960. I have been addicted to this music, doo-wop, classics of the day. I am so surprised that I can remember the lyrics as I sing along with the music you play. If you could, please some Johnny Mathis, and try some smooth jazz with Sade and Enya. I think you may like them. Thank you.
Others have mentioned it, but you should check out Jackson Browne's reworking of this song as the second half of "The Load Out/Stay." He often ended his concerts with that medley, which is a tribute to both his fans and his road crew, so he changed some of the lyrics to the "Stay" part of the song. He sings the chorus first in his normal voice, then a female vocalist named Rosemary Butler scorches it in the upper register, but the crowd is brought to its knees when lap-steel guitarist David Lindley takes a chorus in falsetto. There is a live video of this (Live at the BBC 1978) which is what you want to react to. You won't be disappointed.
For early sixties try Del Shannon "Little Runaway", the Dell Vikings "Come Go With Me". For some mellow seventies try John Denver "Looking For Space", "Annie's Song" , Linda Ronstadt "Blue Bayou" "Different Drum".
You guys are helping us appreciate some of this old school music all over again. I was grammar school age during the doo-wop era but love them all. LOVE STAY!!! Remember this music was aimed at teenage. By the time they were in their 20s they were married in those days....lol
Mr.Williams (as I had to call him when I was young) invited my Mom to go on the road with them. She and her best friend owned a motel at the beach that had a lounge with a stage for live entertainment. He saw her dancing to their songs in a corner of the lounge when they performed there one night. After the show, they talked for awhile and he made the offer; but, she declined because she had 3 little boys to raise by herself and a business to run. That's also where she met and became friends with Tina Turner, whom I call Miss Anna to this day. The falsetto in the song was sang by a member named Shane Gaston (Mr. Shane).
Love love l, love this song. So happy you are reacting to it. If you could see me, I am smiling ear to ear! Thank you! Please listen to You Cheated You Lied, By The Shells.
I found your channel 2 days ago and I am absolutely loving your selections! I am enjoying your journey into the "doo-wop" era and the early to mid sixties and seventies. This is such classical music period that relied on vocal talent, beautiful harmonies and lyrics and not electronic help and crude lyrics and dance moves. Thank you for spotlighting these years and these songs. Yes, I did subscribe- looking forward to more!
Sweet! The first time you stopped the music to say how much you liked the lead vocals, I could not help but think, just you wait... [grin] 1960. Number one on the Hot 100. Williams wrote the song in 1953 when he was 15 years old! Jackson Browne dropped a great cover of the tune in 1977.

The Song "Stay" by Maurice Williams and the Zodiacs was known as being the shortest length song to hit the charts in history I think it still holds that record
Y’all keep bringing my childhood memories back omg! Please react to Shades Of Blue- “Oh How Happy”, Sharon Ridley “Stay Awhile With Me” & The O’ Kaysions “I’m A Girl Watcher”.
Yeah, this right here is a great one and as you said, just what the Doctor ordered :) That high voice always gets me. Reminds me of Frankie Valli in Walk Like A Man, which if you haven't heard that one would be another great suggestion.
Just a little fun fact here: "Stay" has the record for being the shortest record ever to hit Number One. I believe the running time is about 90 seconds. One of those great oldies that you dust off and listen to on a rainy day when there's nothing else to do.
The only number 1 song ever recorded in South Carolina...and the shortest number 1 song ever recorded. Late 40s white guy here...and I still consider this song to be absolutely AMAZING!
We had some “raunch” but it was more subtle. The Wallflower aka “dance with me Henry” by Miss Etta James, Hank Ballad’s original , “Roll with me Annie”, as well as Annie Had a Baby can’t work no more. “don’t cha just know it” by Huey piano smith, and 60 minute man were all songs that had the pearl clutchers up in arms. But, yes, a lot of this music was sweet n innocent by today’s standards. Plus it’s just a lot of fun. Maurice Williams also wrote or co-wrote the doo Wop classic Gloria, which is phenomenal. So many versions of that song. So glad to see your reactions and openness to all this great music. There is hope for the future! Today’s music is great, but these songs and artist were also great. Enjoy. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

This song was big in the 80s too cause there was a 50s/60s revival. The Dirty Dancing movie helped too.
This song was on The Dirty dancing soundtrack and in the movie and that's how I first got introduced to it such a great song
This was such a massive hit back in the day…and still a great listen to this day.
