When I was a little girl, my mom made Barbie clothes for mine and my sister's dolls. We had wedding dresses, coats, dresses, etc. They were beautiful, and she took so much time with them. We didn't have much, but I had a great childhood, because my mother made it special.
I hope many people comment to thank John for his part in today’s video! So cute that he took the time to film it, let him know his efforts were appreciated! It showed a neat little glimpse into a dynamic of your relationship.
My sister was 16 yrs older than I and when I turned 7 she gave me a Ginny doll with a full wardrobe she had made. Several of the fabrics were scraps from maternity tops she had made when carrying her 1st baby ( born 4 mos after my 7th Bday). Sweet fabrics. Tiny little collars and waistbands and pockets. Even a tutu with seed pearl trim from her wedding gown which she had made. I still have all of the clothes and the doll. I'm 76. Ginny is 69 lol.
I am 77 and when I was 9 my parents bought me a Ginny doll for Christmas! She came with 4 outfits! I put her and her outfits in a shadow box. Now one of daughters has inherited it! Hugs from Michigan! ❤
Mary, you are right, sewing during the winter months is my favorite past time. My Mom and I have been sewing since October. We made Pjs for all of the grandchildren and great grandchildren for Christmas. Since Christmas we have been making a quilt for my baby brother and his wife. This makes the third quilt we have made together in three years. So much fun sitting with my Mom and sewing and she tell she me stories of her childhood which I love. My Mom was 99 this past December. She taught me to sew when I was 9 years old and I have made everything from baby clothes to ceiling to floor silk drapes. I love you cat window seat. I wondered why you were putting a steel plate on the board. Genius. Ann from Va.
I hope your are either writing down or recording these stories. I have decided to do that with the stories my Mom is telling me, she just turned 85 and I all of a sudden realized if I DON'T do that, all of this family history will be lost.
@@laurancurtis5669 My goodness Lauren, I thought I was the only person who spends the whee hours of the morning awake and on the IPad. Mom and I have been writing down these stories for years. I compiled most of them several years ago on the computer and copied them into a journal. I made a cover and titled it “ Through the Years”. My Mom also writes poem and I included all of them in this journal. It has been a long time since she has written any things but I so enjoy reading them and her stories every chance I can. I have copied this journal for several members of the family. Ann from Va.
I have a friend who's 85 years old who is amazing at making drapes, bedspreads, shower curtains, and just all kinds of things for people. It's amazing what she can do, and it's all beautiful.
Sewing is a lost art. My mom taught me to sew when I was a young girl and I made costumes. I eventually went to school for Interior design and later learned to make custom window treatments, bed coverings, pillows, table runners, and other items. Thanks for your inspiration today. I’m gonna find a sewing project now.
You are never too late to learn. Start simple. Videos, new cheap sewing machine, scarf, tablecloth, headband, bandana, even a pocket square. Spent some time at the fabric.
Hi Mary! Great video. Just a tip, the reason your hot pad binding had pleats is because you cut it on the straight of grain. If you cut your strips at a 45 degree angle on the bias it will have a lot give and conform to the rounded edges and that won’t happen. ❤
To say you are creative Mary is an under statement !!! So love watching your videos as they are so peaceful. You and John are such a sweet couple . Thank you for showing the beautiful birds, I think they are God's little gifts to us. We feed them too and with a covering of snow the cardinals especially look so beautiful !! Hope you and your family have a very nice week. Love the case you made for your glasses !!!
This brings back memories. We didn’t have much money when we were little. Womens lib hadn’t really occurred so mum was at home. She snagged some small gingham fabric in a bin, one pink one light green. She bought a pattern for Barbie sized outfits and got busy. She had an old Singer treadle machine with the bullet shaped bobbin. She made dresses, head scarves, pants, pop tops, shorts. All in the gingham so you could mix and match. It was fiddly work and she did it after we were in bed. It was fabulous. I still have that machine and the cabinet it folds down into with the iron fretwork legs.
I have taken up sewing again. I learned as a young girl from my mother. This year I made pillows with the word "friendship" for my girlfriends and "family" for my two sisters. I'm so grateful for the ability to do this. I like the idea of the table runner. I have a square table that is impossible to buy a runner that really looks right. John did a fine job - thank him for giving us a chuckle about hiding nice boards from you!
Beautiful sewing projects. Love the nice spring fabric that you used. Thanks for sharing the bird feeder with us so we could see all the wonderful birds. So glad the cats like their new place to lay.
Both my grandmother & my sewed, but I never learned. So, even though I've sewn simple baby quilts for many years, I'd never ventured out beyond that. I'm turning 65 in a few months & decided last year to teach myself to sew. There are a few lovely ladies like yourself on TH-cam who share easy sewing projects explaining each step to make it easier for beginning sewists. I haven't ventured out beyond pillow covers, table runners, card wallets, curtains & such as of yet, but there are so many simple things you can make that honestly looks store bought for a fraction of the cost. Thank you for sharing. ❤
I’ve been appreciating your videos on TH-cam seems like for years now, keep up the good work. They come on every Wednesday morning and I look forward to them. It was very nice to hear John speak today.❤
I really like how you take a “terrifying” skirt pattern and make it not so terrifying. I worked in different sewing factories from age 15 to age 37. God blessed me with a beautiful little girl at age 37. At age 39 went to technical college, along with 3 part-time jobs. Did this for 3 1/2 years and graduated. Stayed home for a couple years and then went back to work as a overnight customer service representative. Stayed there until April 2011 and had heart attack. Went back to work at public library, significant pay decrease and no benefits, but was at home with daughter. Worked there until April 28, 2011. Had 1st open heart surgery on May 3, 2011. No work. Had 2nd open heart June 28, 2013. Was up walking halls with a walker that same day! ❤❤❤🎉🎉
I love your sewing videos Mary! And I especially love hearing about your childhood. I’ve been sewing since I was 9, when I was in 4-H. I learned to sew my own clothes, and I now sew for 3 generations. My favorite thing is to sew doll clothes for my grandchildren! I especially loved watching the birds at your feeder! We don’t have red cardinals where I live, so seeing them was a real treat. So amused at John “hiding” your pine boards! 😊 Keep the videos coming; you are such an inspiration!
Hubby is hilarious! We hide our tools from each other here. 😂 Thank you for posting a sewing video. I’ve wanted to add sewing to my painting videos and was hesitant to. You’ve inspired me to do that and to see if sewing will sell in my booth!
This video is so reminiscent of my mom. She was always sewing. Either doing alterations for people , making our doll and Barbie clothes, our clothes and then even my wedding dress. I’m so sad that I didn’t have the passion for sewing back then. She gifted me a sewing machine for my bridal shower and I was only ever able to make the very basics. Now I struggle with that machine not knowing how to adjust tension, the bobbin settings etc. I want to look for sewing classes near me or just start watching on TH-cam. Thanks for sharing Mary!💕
Thanks Mary loved all of your sewing projects. I have been going to Zinks for many years. I was just in your area mid january for my birthday. I went into the Zinks and told them that it was my birthday and they gave me a discount. Thought that was so nice of them. I also mentioned your name and they said, yes they knew you and you were a very nice lady.
Sewing has become sort of a lost art. I am beginning to see people around me wanting to learn how to sew now, asking for teachers etc. It is so refreshing to see the renewed interest in it!
Quilter here- if you want to make another pot holder, look up binding a quilt on TH-cam. I find Jordan Fabrics to be the easiest to understand. It’s not difficult to do. Thanks for doing a video on sewing ❤. It’s my favorite hobby and I’m always looking for fun and easy projects.
Dad was in the Air Force; when I was young we moved from the city my parents grew up in to Anchorage Alaska one December. With seven kids and a recent move, we didn't have much money for Christmas, so Mom made pink and blue flannel baby doll pajamas and nightgowns. One of my sisters and I often talk about those very dear gifts. I learned to sew making baby doll and Barbie doll clothes for my younger sisters.
Mary, I love the way you keep things so simple. I know I will be trying that basket liner method. Your husband hiding the nice boards and you saying he needs a new hiding place gave me a good laugh. Thank you so much for your calm and gentle spirit, and for sharing your ideas so freely.
I used to sew all the time and still love looking at fabrics. Zinck’s is a fabric paradise! It was such fun to see John at work in your video! And he gave away his secret!!
You are just such an all around creative person. I’ll say it again, there’s nothing you can’t do. I love your cats,so sweet. You are so good to them. Basket is perfect.
My mom gave me a tiny suitcase filled with Barbie clothes she'd made, and my friends and I had endless hours playing with the dolls and clothes. I had one Barbie and one Midge, and my best friend had Skipper and Ken. Perfect for an afternoon of imaginary fun. I eventually got the Barbie convertible but didn't like that the doors wouldn't open. :) Flash forward to present day, and I have a black cat who loves to sit in any window, so I love the seat you made for your kitties. All your projects are pretty and useful. I enjoy your channel.
One year for Christmas I bought my daughter 3 of the the larger size strawberry shortcake dolls lemon, peach and strawberry!! I made her outfits , in solid teal, yellow and pink colors and each of those same colors in gingham check. I made blankets, and all kinds of clothing, everything in I made I made in both fabrics for each doll. Bought a mini baby crib that fit all 3 dolls. My daughter is 49 and guess which dolls she saved for her daughter if she had any!! She had 3 boys so 2 boys are married and maybe a little granddaughter will get to enjoy them! I’m thinking she probably remembers that Christmas above all others!!
Hi Mary, I grew up sewing and very much enjoyed all the projects you made in this video. Your instructions are spot on and you've inspired me to pull out the sewing machine and make things!! YOur husband, John, is wonderful for helping and supporting you. Two more months of winter and we can ease into spring. I"m in the suburbs of Chicago where we have had much snow and freezing temps since the second week of January. It has eased up a bit and the snow is melting. Yeah!! Have a blessed week. 😄😄
John's cameo appearance was great! He did a good job. He should do more cameos. Your skirt turned out so cute. I'm afraid that knit skirts only flatter slim figures like yours, so it looks so nice on you. The cat bench for the window was adorable!
I love everything you have sewn. You make me want to dive and sew. I’m in a nursing home, I don’t think they allow sewing machines, though I do have it with me. But I can watch you and imagine. Thank your husband for helping out. He’s funny. Take care
I actually laughed out loud when John admitted he hid boards from you!!! 😂 You do everything perfectly and I can see your hubby does too. Love watching you.
My daughter and I bought fabric at Zinck's when we went to Holmes County. We both bought sewing machines at Somewhere Sewing. Besides that we had great food. My daughter also ordered a baby bed from Yoder's Oak and Cherry for her grandbaby. It's beautiful!
I enjoyed watching you sew..I have always loved to sew..I too am blessed to have a serger n 2 or 3 regular sewing machines..so easy to set up, with all the colors of thread I'm using n not have to stop n wind a bobbin, and re-thread ur machine...lol..I bet you was happy to hear ur husband talking n explaining what he was going to be doing..I'm so proud of my husband, when he makes things for me too..everything is beautiful..thanks for sharing with all of us..
My mama taught me to sew some when I was younger, wish I had paid more attention and learned more. She passed away suddenly and totally unexpectedly 7/3/21 so now it's too late. I'd give anything to have that time back and learn more. She was a great seamstress. She made several beauty pageant dresses for me, which blows my mind to think about now. She'd spend HOURS at that sewing machine. Mary, you're so talented and so good at everything you do. Thank you for sharing your life and your beautiful home and talents with us. You amaze me and inspire me. Thanks John for your sweet part of the video, great job. Yall are just the sweetest 🙂
Mary, sweet girl...have that adorable husband of yours wall off a portion of his wonderful workshop for you a sewing room! I've had one for the last 30+ years and it's a life changer...a designated space for sewing, projects, wrapping, etc. is so inspirational and save so much time setting up each time you want to make something!
Ah my favorite of this video is the cat window bed.🙂 those kitties are spoiled. Well done John with your insert. I love the fabric you used for the pot holder, it is very special.... I LOVE blue's. With us opening our restaurant last year October I sewed aprons for my daughter and myself, i must admit I love sewing and love aprons :) always being creative and just enjoy what I am doing. Thank you Mary for all your wonderful video's. Hugs from South Africa
I just stumbled on the channel and love the laid back style you have. I've been sewing since I was 3 and I taught my best friend and my own daughter to sew. I got the best compliment this weekend... my daughter informed me that I'd taught her to sew well enough that she has the self confidence (something she really struggles with along with anxiety) to sew without my help and doesn't need the guide sheet for her project either as she can figure out how things go together now too! She's now teaching her girlfriend to sew as well. She's a 5th generation seamstress in the family now. As for my best friend we taught her daughter to sew and she's picked up on quilting and clothing. It's a good thing I have a large stash of fabric to use! I need to go back and watch more of your videos for more ideas of things to make!
I really enjoyed this episode, I love sewing. I’m 44 and have am self taught. My mother never had time to sew when I was growing up. My grandmothers weren’t sewers either. If I see something I want to, I have to learn how to make it myself.
I just laughed out loud when you said "and he even talks!" He did a good job! And loved seeing the cardinals at your bird feeder. You had 2 loved ones visiting you that day!
I learnt to sew when I was 8. My grandmother gave me her Pfaff treadle machine. It lived in my bedroom so I had no choice. I used to make my dolls clothes and decorated my room and then progessed to making my own clothes. When I went to boarding school I only had weekly lessons. My mother left my father and sold my machine to the local tailor. It took me another 5 years before I bought my own Pfaff 1212 which set me off making my own clothes again. I got into recycling old ties into skirts and waistcoats for money. At one stage I was making costumes for plays. I replaced the Pfaff (i still regret it) with an Elna Carina. It has some fantastic decorative stitches which enhanced my bedding. In the last few years I have inherited 2 Berninas (1942 and 1970 vintage), 2 pfaffs (1963 and 1985) and a husqvarna (1959). Such diversity in use. Not a computerised one among them!
Thank you for the sewing projects. I haven’t sown for a few years now and you have given me inspiration to go shopping for some spring fabrics and start sewing.
Mary, you are just amazing. I loved this sewing video. I do hope you do more of them. And the fact that you made your kitties that little platform to look out the window. So sweet.
Love the projects. I remember making dresses for my younger cousins when I was 10-11 . I've always enjoyed sewing. I recently bought fabric to make new tiers. Tell John he did a great job in front of the camera.❤
You make things look simple. You are really good with math, angles and measurements. It comes into play in your cooking, woodwork and sewing. You are truly an azmmazing inspiration. I have such fun watching your videos. I love Wednesday's they are my Mary days! Tell John he may end up with his own channel before too ling. He did a grwst job! Yall compliment each other. You have a creative family. Thanks for sharing your gifts!
Can’t miss those beautiful Cardinals , i had 3 of them in my tree and at my feeders the other day . In Germany 🇩🇪 where I grew up we had sewing ,cooking ,knitting, crocheting and embroidery in school as a class , it was pretty basic and I did make curtains and pillow cases for my house later on but my passion was always knitting and crocheting . You are so very talented in all you do , greetings from a very snowy Massachusetts
great video. When I was younger and poorer I used to make potholders with baby blankets as lining. For some reason I had an excess of free baby blankets.Lots of other projects over the years. I wish the blessing of knowing how to sew on everyone.
Hi Mary, lovely sewing projects with great fabrics. For future reference the binding needed to be cut from the fabric diagonally on the bias (i.e., corner to corner) it would have then laid flat on both sides as you sewed it. Lovely results 💕
Ty for the video. When I was a little girl I wanted to try my mom’s sewing machine but she said I’d get hurt. My friend introduced me to a sewing machine a few years ago so I took up sewing in my 40s. I’m 50 now and I love pressing on that pedal, seeing things I’ve made on my own with pride and joy. Ty for the wonderful video. I liked and subscribed 😊
I need to do a road trip to your neck of the woods, Mary, for some of those lovely cottage style print fabrics. There used to be a fabulous fabric store in Gastonia NC called Mary Jo's Cloth Store. Sadly she passed away and her children had no interest in continuing the store. She carried everything from quilting cotton to beaded wedding fabrics to fabulous upholstery fabrics. I never left that store empty-handed. I've been sewing for 62 years although now it's mostly clothing for my niece, curtains, pillows, and shopping totes. I make my totes with French seams - very easy to do and makes for a very strong and neatly finished bag.
Hi Mary, i got the biggest kick out of John confessing the hidden pine boards😂. What a great guy❤. Loved this video, i have had a brand new sewing machine staring me in the face since last Christmas and i guess i'm scared to try it lol. This gives me inspiration! Thank you and God bless you and your family!
My late grandmother was a professional seamstress. I learned a lot from her and did a lot of sewing when I was a young girl, but haven’t sewn in years now. Loved all the sewing projects especially the cat bed.
My Mom sewed all my clothes and made matching outfits for my dolls. She would also take a skirt, rip it out and make doll clothes or something for me. I still have some of her patterns. Sometimes she would make her own patterns from newspaper. Mary, my mom always wanted a Bernina machine. Loved todays video.
Great sewing video. Sewing is a lost art but so very rewarding. Mu 10 ur old granddaughter and I are sewing together. So much fin. A special no thanks to John for his part in the video. He did a good job and seems to be a natural in front of the camera and in the wood shop. You two make a great team!! As always, love your videos Mary. You are one of the first I turned i to on you tube and always look for each new post. Blessings!!
Mary, thank you. Your how to/why explanations are really great. The mitre corner’s is the best I have come across. It is something I have struggled with for my entire sewing life…lol ….almost 60 years 😂. No more. Thank you. Really enjoy your content.
Scrap projects are so much fun. I spent an entire decade using scraps to make lavender sachets that were sold on Ebay. I still make them for myself and as gifts. There's nothing like a lavender sachet under the pillow to help with sleep, or a few in a basket near an open window in warm weather.
When I was little, my mom made most of my Barbie clothes. Wedding dresses, gowns, skirts, faux fur coats, pants, jackets, lingerie, shorts, halters, etc. She even made me some beautiful bedding with ruffles and throw rugs. I still have most of them too and I'm going to be 60 this year. I've also made a few items. Now my granddaughters are playing with them all.
When I was a little girl, my mom made Barbie clothes for mine and my sister's dolls. We had wedding dresses, coats, dresses, etc. They were beautiful, and she took so much time with them. We didn't have much, but I had a great childhood, because my mother made it special.

That's great, over she been sewing since youth because I do. I sell what I make, give as gifts and sew hats, scarves for church and homeless shelters.
So wonderful that your husband thinks ahead of what you might need, but knowing that he has to have a reserve to suit what your project needs. 😊

I used to sew all the time and still love looking at fabrics. Zinck’s is a fabric paradise! It was such fun to see John at work in your video! And he gave away his secret!!
Put a spindle leg on the cat platform for a bit of stability. What a cute idea.
You are just such an all around creative person. I’ll say it again, there’s nothing you can’t do. I love your cats,so sweet. You are so good to them. Basket is perfect.
What a sweet man to save the best wood for you. Don’t dig for them. Let him be your hero. ❤️
Also great to see your hubby helping out with his carpentry skills. So great.😊
Your cats will really enjoy the birds outside. The bed looks very comfy. Really like the drawstring bag. Very nice video. Thank you
Hi Mary, I grew up sewing and very much enjoyed all the projects you made in this video.
You are the best Cat Mom. Such a sweet human you are.
Love pic of one of your cats sleeping on your new window ledge with pillow!! 😻
Cardinals just outside the window…incredibly wonderful!
He’s funny. Take care
I am always amazed at the magic of turning out a mitered corner.
How lovely that your husband made his own video... nice to hear his voice
Mary, I don't comment very often, but I just had to say that I could watch you do sewing projects all day long - no pressure...
I actually laughed out loud when John admitted he hid boards from you!!! 😂 You do everything perfectly and I can see your hubby does too. Love watching you.
The CAT BED was so clever! Sweet for the cats.
The cat bed is terrific! You could patent them, too. Everything you make is pretty. Thank you.
Makes me want to get my machine out and make some Spring things.
Your cats are so sweet!
I think they approve of their new window bed! 🤗
I want to make a table runner with some beautiful fabric I have had forever!!! ❤
I love to sew in the winter. I have been up-cycling clothes lately.
Wow! You have such a beautiful home and sewing space. Thanks for these great ideas. I love watching the birds on your feeder.❤🦜
I'm a quilter, so this was a fun one to watch!!!! You always look so nice in all your skirts!
Loved these projects. The birds were a special touch.❤
So refreshing watching you.I have not sown in years!! Love your skirt!!
Just love the kitty beds. They are so blessed to have you. Well done John! Thank you for sharing these lovely projects Mary.
So many beautiful projects. ❤
This is a really fun video 🤗 I love sewing and my mother was the best. Your cats are adorable. Have a blessed day.
Your husband did a great job! Tell him to do more! We’re not scary!
Thank you. I loved the sewing projects and the shot of all the variety of birds at your feeder. The blue toile fabric is so pretty.
The red birds at your bird feeder with the snowy trees in the background looked like a postcard. Just beautiful. 😊❤❄️
I think the place by the window for your cats is just beautiful and they accepted it immediately. Simply cute :-)
Perfect winter inspiration! I'm going to sew some new spring pillow covers for our bed.
Great inspiration! I'll be making eyeglass cases for everyone in my Christmas list! Thanks to John and Twinkle for the help with the cat bed project!
Mary, you are just amazing. I loved this sewing video. I do hope you do more of them. And the fact that you made your kitties that little platform to look out the window. So sweet.
I’ve been sewing my entire life and I never knew the corner trick when making a table runner. Game changer! Thank you so much for sharing!
Your home is lovely.
I love your relaxed way of sewing.
Thank you for doing your videos and it is lovely seeing your husband and his workshop.
How generous of you to share your creativeness and skills with us. Your gentle speech is so inspiring. Thank you !
Thank you, Mary. I've never seen a mitered edge done like that before. I usually do it the difficult way. 'Sew Simple', really. 😉
I enjoy watching your videos and hate when they come to an end. You have such wonderful talents and creativity.
Scrap projects are so much fun. I spent an entire decade using scraps to make lavender sachets that were sold on Ebay. I still make them for myself and as gifts. There's nothing like a lavender sachet under the pillow to help with sleep, or a few in a basket near an open window in warm weather.
I love watching your videos. You are so talented.
You are so talented. When my ister and I were young our grandmother made us Barbie Clothes. I still have them. Everything you made is amazing.
Such a beautiful view watching birds and sewing 😊😊😊 at the same time ❤❤❤❤❤
