    For those of us who hate silicone eartips, the AirPods 4 are a nice step up over the AirPods Pro 2. I've only had the AirPods 4 ANC for about a week now, but they seem comfortable enough that I will probably sell my AirPods Pro 2, even if I still find myself reaching for over-ear headphones when those are an option. But, the convenience factor of having AirPods in your pocket is hard to miss out on, since I never have over-ear headphones in my pocket.

      The form is the biggest deal for me as someone just looking to upgrade their AirPods 2. I know Pro’s are all-around a better deal, but unlike 90% of normal people, apparently 😅, silicone tips have never stayed in my ears properly, or I just get serious irritation after listening seshes. Somehow I can run with the sit-in style for hours with no issue, but silicone will just slowly pop out no matter what size tips I choose…

    For group A, which im a loud & proud member of, these are revolutionary. I bought and retuned AirPods Pro 4 times. 2 times with the V1, two times with V2. I did buy AirPods Pro v1 a third time and forced myself to deal with it, but after 6 months I just couldn’t stand it anymore and bought myself a pair of AirPods Max. The day those came in was the last day I used my pros for more than 15 minutes. They were sold for half of what I paid and I never regretted that, I only regret buying the stupid things in the first place. AirPods Pro 2 anc and transparency mode were FAR worse than AirPods Max is for me. Two separate sets and both sounded just as awful. All I really wanted was anc on the classic AirPods, and these are it. Even for the exact same price I’d still take ap4, thought I would bitch about the volume control

    Hi Quinn, valid remarks for sure. But for me the AirPods 4 are perfect. I am a runner and completely sealed in-ears cause a drumming noise in my ears with every step I take, during workouts. I like the AirPods 3 since they are open back and a comfortable fit. The fact what I don't like is that I have to set the volume very loud because of external noise (wind,...). The AirPods 4 are atm my perfect companion, comfy fit, no drumming in my ear and thanks to the noise cancelling I'm able to run with music on a lower volume, which is very nice.

    01:18 - The 'Add Voice Isolation' button Quinn shows seems to be for watching content. From what I understand, it’s an option to 'Enhance Dialogue,' and it doesn’t need AirPods 4 with ANC. You can use it with any headphones and turn it on or off without owning AirPods.
    I think this was just shown for B-roll, but the Voice Isolation option should have been the one from the Control Center, where you can switch between voice isolation, normal, and wide spectrum.

    The issue is not the price and comparing them to the APP2 does not make sense to me since I and many others can't wear silicone ear tips comfortably. I think this is the main reason why someone would choose them, moreover the Airpods 4 ANC fit me perfectly whereas the 3 did not. They have all the awesome qualities I'm looking for in this type of headphone, good sounding microphones, great portability, active noise cancellation (even if a bit limited) and good transparency. I do agree that the volume controls would've been nice to have though, but all in all, they really deliver and thanks to no silicone design I can finally also enjoy the practical utility from AirPods.

    • @tendojoe
      @tendojoe 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +14

    • @isomorphic97
      @isomorphic97 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @jb--2023 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      I really like the Pro 2 but the silicone tips hurt my ears. I tried foam and they started hurting also. I wore the Airpods 4 all day and my ears did not hurt. The ANC is not enough for me. When I am watching a movie on my laptop in the same room as my wife is watching TV I can hear the TV. When there is actions sounds, music or people talking in the movie I don't hear the TV. Kinda annoying hearing the TV but I can't wear Airpods with tips.

    • @seanki
      @seanki 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      @@isomorphic97 "most people" is a wild assumption, on the contrary it makes more sense that most people actually are capable of realising whether it fits or not (especially with tip ear fit test). Memory foam tips are nice but wear out very quickly which introduces a reoccurring cost to maintain good quality. In my case I can't wear in ear anymore due to an ear injury, whereas generally it's common for people to experience discomfort due to allergies. So while AP4 are inferior in terms of sound quality to the APP2 I think amongst the > 1bn Apple customers there are enough people with these type of issues that it made sense to develop this product. For someone with no ear issues I agree that the APP2 is clearly the winner especially for almost the same price.

    • @isomorphic97
      @isomorphic97 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@seanki I don’t think so. Personal preference most times resolves from habits, and there are a lot of people who where used to the plastic standard headphones from apple and that why the first airpods where also designed after that. As you said the pro’s are not by accident the one which are in-ears as the sound reproduction is superior to non sealing earpods. But you need a bit of a break-in period with in-ears but (apart from injuries, allergies or problematics with having your ears plugged in general) they are the most compatible form factor for the majority of people (when they have the right fit). That why the statement that a comparison between in APP2 and the AP4 is useless is wrong. Also the tip ear fit test is just testing the sound reproduction and has no effect on the perceived comfort.
      The majority of people can wear and adjust to both form factors (when they are willing to) and the buying choice should be focused on performance and features instead of the form factor.

    I can always count on you to teach me something I didn’t know, like the angle-dependent auto-playback-resume feature to mask the ear-detection’s shortcomings. That’s just not something that other reviewers would ever even consider thinking about.
    Regarding AdaptiveEQ, I must offer a correction. I do not believe it is H2 dependent, as it was advertised on both Airpods Pro 1 and Airpods 3. However, Adaptive EQ on both Airpods 3 and Airpods 4 is MUCH more sensitive than other Airpods models. I speculate this is due to the vast array of ear shapes and fitment positions, warranting a more sensitive (more “adaptive”) frequency response adjustment. Seriously, sometimes if I open my mouth and point my jaw to the side, I can trigger a massive change in EQ as the shape of my ear canal changes.

      @markb1911 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I think it is also. Especially because small peripherals that contain fairly low capacity batteries are, in my opinion, the best candidates for wireless charging.
      Wireless charging is achieved by the wireless charger and device being charged effectively become an inductive transformer when placed near enough in proximity with one another.
      The winding in the charger is the transformer’s primary winding, and the one in the phone is the secondary. A flat ferromagnetic disk beneath the winding in the charger creates the magnetic flux field that facilitates the alternating current passing through the charger’s winding to be induced into the winding within the device being charged.
      Inductive energy transfer can be made to be somewhat efficient, however, the inherent existence of inductive reactance with this kind of power transfer will always cause some of the power to be waisted as heat. Inductive reactance is inherent with any form of inductive energy transfer and can be thought of as the AC “impedance” that the windings present despite the presence of an induced magnetic flux field.
      The current still has to travel through the space within the field from one winding to the other, and this transfer will always be plagued by heat-generation as a bi-product.
      The larger quantity of wireless electricity transfer, the larger the associated losses and the greater the heat.
      So it makes sense to wirelessly charge devices with smaller batteries that are going to be set down anyways, such as an airpods charging case.
      I’ve never used wireless charging for my phone because 1. I can’t use the phone while it’s charging, 2. In every test that i’ve conducted, the battery reaches significantly higher temperatures in the device being wirelessly charged. I use them at work all day one at a time until one dies out and I switch them. But the ANC isn’t bad at all of course not better than my pros but really good .and even better now I get usb C charging now so all my devices now can use the same charger

    Thanks for mentioning the hissing noise when using transparency or NC modes. I wasn’t sure if my unit was defective so I actually had to exchange it only to find out the second one does the same. I guess that’s the design flaw, and I’d have to stick to my APP2 despite not liking the rubber ear tips.

    My guess is these AirPods will eventually slot in at the price you would have preferred them at: around $100 or $140 with ANC based on what other AirPods sell for. It is obviously ridiculous for the 4 with ANC to cost just $10 or $20 less than what the AirPods Pro 2 are actually selling for, particularly with their new hearing aid trick. AirPods are one of Apple's largest selling products and have regularly been discounted unlike most of their other products.

    AirPods Pro ANC had a very high noise floor and was not powerful enough for me. I switched to Beats Studio Buds+ with custom foam tips instead. Just passive noise isolation on Beats with custom tips cancel the annoying stuff (traffic ppl on street etc) way better compared to AirPods Pro with ANC + original tips. If someone makes a custom foam sleeve for AirPods 4 that actually works, it might be great.

    My ears and my wife's ears are absolutely different. She can use only vacuum earbuds like Pro because all the others just fall out of her ears. My situation is opposite. When I use any vacuum earbuds, I feel bone conduction effect when all the vibration from every my footstep literally hit my head like a hammer so it quickly ends in a headache (I'm unlucky to be in this category). So today I purchased AirPods 4 with ANC and I can say it's fantastic! The best sound I've ever heard, considering how many headphones of different types I've had before. I know it's not studio sound with straight frequency response and the sound is decorated (basically like many many others non-studio headphones) but it sounds sweet, drunk, and enjoyable for me in any style. Noise cancellation removes all low and medium frequencies surprisingly good (considering this is not a vacuum model), however I still hear some very high frequencies like keyboard keys tapping. And what's important (and what I was afraid), AirPods 4 sit perfectly in my ears.

    Quinn mentions the "rest of Apple's line-up", right, I agree, by far I'm enjoying the Beats Fit Pro. They've got a better price, stays in my ears better, has a nice seal, got the USBC treatment earlier, and has a tactile click when you press the backing buttons. Being part of Apple's lineup, they also benefit from all the niceties like auto-switching, Find My, and really smooth pairing functionality. The AirPods 4 ANC just doesn't make any sense to me; they fall out easier (no wing), don't seal and thus sound worse, and cost more. The ONLY reason I would consider an open design is if it's really meant for sweaty fitness. I would love to hear Quinn's take on the Nothing Ear Open vs Sony Linkbuds. These hit on very different needs, and looks pretty interesting.

      The driver tuning on the 4s seems weird and downgraded to me, and these more recent headphones do a lot of annoying, software-only, “computational audio” things-some of which you can control or turn off/on as a user, and some you can’t. One uncontrollable one includes slowly tuning (EQ’ing) sound over time based on your ear shape, so they may sound worse new than after months of use.
      With Apple not much control over your audio device is placed in the user’s hands, where if it was, maybe AirPods 4 could be manually EQ’d to address their faults (still dumb that this is necessary to begin with).
      If you like the 2s you have, the 3s are an upgrade in audio quality even over the 4s in my opinion. The 3s are noticeably larger than 2s and slightly larger than 4s, but I still find them comfortable and much more so than the Pros with rubber tips.
      There’s limited audio adjustment settings in the Settings app, under “Headphone Accommodations.” With the 3s set to “Balanced Tone - Slight” in that menu, they sound the best to me out of all the normal AirPods.
