No knowing that Ace Attorney was a series with a set order, I started out with Apollo Justice, since it was the freshest game at the time, and I thought that the new protagonist wouldn't be too much of a problem even if I hadn't played the trilogy before. 4-1 was thus my first case ever. The bar was set so high from the start by my own experience, and I still think 4-1 is my favourite case in the entire series for just how bold of an introduction it was to me.
The first Ace Attorney game I played was first one, similarly to most people. However after I had finished it I wasn't sure if there were any sequels until I stumbled across the first investigations game. I played a bit of it before I lost interest where my save file left dormant for long while. Eventually I decided to revisit the game and subsequently complete it in a matter of days. After I had done so I decided to do a bit more research on how many games there are and which order they come in chronologically and I've been making my way through them since
I didn't even know what Ace Attorney was. I saw the box cover and decided to get the game based on that. I had no idea what I was getting myself into. 4-1 was such a wild ride. I was instantly hooked.
@@train3124 Shame it's only really good one. Love the different atmosphere and I absolutely eat up any deviation from the norm but just too low energy. The cases are fairly average and doesn't change up much. Apollo is a really good protag but he doesn't slap as hard as Nick. 4-4 is the most boring case in the entire series next to 1-3 and 2-3. Probably my least favorite game in the series next to Justice for All.
Something I never see anyone talk about is Iris's psych locks in 3-5 and how you never actually break them. You have to deduce them on you own time. Phoenix asks iris if they've med before and he is confronted with five locks. You don't break them and they never appear again, but when the twin twist is revealed, you realize that she spent all that time dating Phoenix and it actually meant something to her. I never see anyone talk about it and I think it's such an amazing moment in the game
Iris is actually one of my favorite characters. And I genuinely hope the series starts returning accomplices to the narrative as a few of them could SERIOUSLY make some awesome plot lines. Iris Fey and Lana Skye are definitely the 2 that come to mind the most. But there’s also Viola Cadaverini (weird pick I know but it’s the Cadaverini family like the Kitaki’s as a whole that interest me. Crime syndicates rarely go untouched in this series.) Thinking about it now this game does not play with accomplices often. So it could be even more interesting to see them add more to the story since they got lighter sentences. 7 year time skip is a LONG time.
@@Kaempfdog personally? The one character whose return I'm REALLY rooting for is Dee Vasquez. Hers was a self-defense kill after all, so it seems somewhat plausible that she'd be out 11 years later. Just imagine her in AA7, popping up in some sort of seedy mob environment, and getting to dig into some of her mob connections. Maybe we could get a proper introduction to Bruto Cadaverini at the same time!
@@lucrayzor9657 all ace attorney cases result in death sentences even if it's a self defense I believe (or maybe not because you see frank sahwit in a later game)
i find it just decent conpared to like an 1-4. I don't like mia in this case, most of the characters except pearl and von karma are more annoying than funny or interesting. also for it to be the actual case for maya return we barely see her. I think if the case should be longer.
1:04:16 To be fair, Phoenix never duped Apollo into _presenting_ it. Phoenix just made sure Apollo showed it to Kristoph. When Kristoph asked where Apollo got that, Phoenix jumped in by claiming it was his *before* Apollo ever officially presents it. After all, even if it gets out that the forged evidence was revealed to be forged, Apollo would never see any repercussions for it because of the fine print within the game’s evidence law.
I still consider that duping Apollo. Phoenix even admitted it was forged in court, and Phoenix IMMEDIATELY pointed out that only the killer would know for a FACT that it was forged. So the evidence wasn’t used to convict him, his admission under oath that there WAS a card like that at the scene was used against him. Which again, yes does technically work but that’s still spotty as hell. Phoenix deserved to get punched. That’s a THIN tightrope to cross while costing Apollo his career at a prestigious law firm under someone on the bar association board. Especially when he uses the same trap AGAIN with giving Apollo half the context in 4-4. It’s the foundation of Apollo’s resentment and near complete lack of faith and fear of Phoenix in the 2 following games.
@@Kaempfdog I’m not saying Phoenix didn’t deserve the punch. I’m just pointing out a mild note that most players (myself included on my first play through) likely missed.
@@JJ_R that’s fair. I try to go as in depth on my details as possible more and more each play through. My head is in PRETTY deep now. So jogging back to my 1st play through is probably the hardest thing to remember ironically.
Plus the bombing stuff. ISIS was still in it's prime around the time of DD's release so a bombing scene probably wasn't going to fly (Dark pun not intended).
What a fantastically edited, well scripted and entertaining 2 and a half hours. It's criminal that you have as few fans that you do. Life should be put on trial for this.
Hey I’d have my hopes up more if this wasn’t my first video. The fact it’s doing so well is an absolute joy for me. Do tell what’re your thoughts on the series?
@@Kaempfdog Ace Attorney is irreplaceable as a series really. There's almost nothing like it and the few things similar can likely claim a lot of inspiration. I've not actually played through most of the games myself, only watched most of them though I did play AAI1 myself and your video inspired me to start playing Dual Destinies with my friend. Looking forward to gushing about it with you.
@@esoterica6291 oh PLEASE do. That’s my favorite. And it doesn’t get enough praise because it came out in a VERY hand holdy era. (Skyward Sword came out 2 years prior and that’s my favorite Zelda. So I can get past that.) Look forward to see if you catch something I didn’t!
@@Kaempfdog Sometimes I don't think there's anything wrong in being handholdy for the sake of convenience. It sure beats having to constantly save if you're nervous you're gonna flub a cross examination.
@@esoterica6291 on one hand I do agree, but on the other it REALLY takes stakes out. You were meant to be nervous your client may be found guilty so you don’t backtrack a lot. But the story was SO good none of that mattered. I do agree with the overall complaint, but it’s not enough to actually hold the game down from being as good as the others. But that’s just me.
Well it’s not just the panties case. It’s hysterical for the panties moments. But we gotta look at the rest of it. The 2nd trilogy is just as good as the 1st. :) What are your thoughts on the rest? Do tell.
@@Kaempfdog Yeah! I actually really liked cross examining the panty guy, cause I appreciated the 3d visuals for whenever we got an additional clue for the shooting. Getting additional info about the head turns of the victim, where the witness was standing, the wound of the victim and where the shooter was actually standing... It was all satisfying because you could really tell, through those visuals, that you were making progress, learning more about what was actually going on! I also found the Kitaki family very charismatic personally lol. Oh, and Ema was amazing in AJ. I haven't ranked each case but the list and what you both said pretty convincing. I actually didnt see 1-1 being last coming, I think cause most will simply say it's "in the lower middle" because its such an ok case and introduction to the series, but then I completely understood the approach. It is easily the most meh experience out of all cases in comparison, due to the other ones not only succeeding in what made 1-1 ok, but builds its own more distinct identity, and ultimately becomes more interesting. Maybe people focus so much on the additional negatives of some later cases, that they see them as an ultimately weaker case? I was really happy to see 2-2 so high, I think alot of people undervalue its importance. I personally remember finding 3-3 a bit annoying lol. The cast of 2-3 is commonly critiqued for being grating but I largely disagree and would instead say that that's more applicable towards the cast of 3-3. Even though it was already low on the list, as much as I generally love Dual Destinies, 5-2 would probably be a bit lower than it was on this list. I barely remember AAI at all except case 4 ofc. I think I also had fun with case 2. Dont think I have too much else to ad here, these are some of my thoughts. Also, I really appreciate the work on this video!! My favorite detail was the little melody jingles before the reveal of each case, which already revealed which game it was gonna be from. Well frickin done!
@@ivan_ivankovich I freaking LOVED the 3D look at the room simulations from Case 1 and Case 2 from AJ. I REALLY wish they brought those back. It’s what helped make 4-1 so immersive. Also 4-4 is a case I implore others to play more because you will NEVER catch all the details 1st go. And if they organized it right, it’d be knocked up several spots. So we organized it for people. And again, investigate EVERYTHING in that case. Even the simulation areas. You get some GREAT stuff. Plus if you’re in the same area with someone different, you’ll often get completely different dialogue. Which is how I found out the law books were read. And that’s why 3-5 never left #1. Because the conversations change SO frequently and they reward you nonstop for doing that. Everyone has something to say about everybody. If there were a case I regret placement, it’d be 2-1. I was too harsh, but I’d only put it up 1 spot. I1-3 is just that bad. Seriously. The fact you can’t remember anything from AAI is EXACTLY why all those cases placed poorly but I1-4. The fact we once considered putting the plane case over the FINALE was a testament to our patience, and I freaking pick this series apart at the ATOMS. 3-3 was a bit bothersome for complex investigations being a BIT much, but everything else was so dang enjoyable we couldn’t fault it too much. Plus we specifically defend 2-3’s cast as pretty solid just not the best we’ve seen. Dual Destinies was the one I needed to defend the most because everyone called it a retcon when it wasn’t because the case order was so screwed. The arcs are very fluid and are VERY enjoyable. Especially Apollo’s HUGE resentment and fear of Phoenix which only gets resolved in SoJ. In 6-2 Apollo is genuinely stunned Phoenix says he believes in him to save the office. XD There’s SO many details in this series that you NEED to go into that kind of detail. And that’s why 1-5 placed so well. Not only did it complete the timeline of Edgeworth, but we only didn’t enjoy Angel Staar, and the video shouldn’t have had the blue badger song playing as you analyzed it. SL-9 is a GREAT case.
@@Kaempfdog Maybe I'm too harsh on 3-3. It's been a while since i played T&T and whenever I revisit it online, I mostly care about the cases surrounding Mia, Godot, Dahlia n all that. I think I mostly remember not getting much info initially from the old guy, and feeling like the whole 1st day of the trial was very unsatisfying. I was about to write a comment about how I possibly would've put 3-1 significantly higher, but when looking at the cases above, idk... the ones above are all pretty good, and I had a lot of fun with them too. Compared to the series' previous introduction cases, however, 3-1 really stands out, as it made me further curious about Mia's and Dahlia's past, as well as Mia's first case. It made such a better job at making me excited for what's to come later on. Intro cases are really important, and I like that some later games showcase that, while also functioning as a tutorial for newcomers, it can also serve as a way to make anyone playing go "WOAH, why did that happen, I wanna know more". Maybe that's partly why I also love 4-1, as you're left with a lot of questions after that one too. It almost feels like the game is giving the player an additional reason to keep playing. One thing that bothered me especially about the AAI finale that I remember, was how the music was used when confronting Alba. When the slightly faster, more intense music is playing, you assume you're close to the end, but no, you're probably not even halfway through the case yet. And so when youre finally there, it doesnt feel too satisfying, it's more like, "ugh, this was... alot...". I think I understand the idea of putting this one potentially lower.
@@ivan_ivankovich well in all fairness to 3-1, it’s the best of the intro cases that don’t truly stand out. We love Mia. And she has her own methods distinct from Phoenix. And we give that kudos of working back her mentor level insight to how she built that. Dahlia is our favorite killer. (Thanks screen time.) But things like Grossberg, young Phoenix, and just some other aspects we weren’t exactly the most keen on didn’t justify it going over longer side cases with thorough investigations that are just stronger. Notice how every intro case that didn’t reveal the killer placed good for an intro case to receiving ALL of the praise like 4-1 and I2-1. 4-1 especially with the context of 4-4 improves even MORE. And we love it for that. Make it a true connection to the finale just gives it all the browny points. Rewarding for shock value and rewarding to replay. As for 3-3, I understand that when playing through the 1st time. I’m just itching to get back to the big Mia plot. But as I’ve played more, we just began to just appreciate this case more and more. It’s just excellent silly fun. I1-5 is just….not…worth playing multiple times. At least not more than 2-3 to get the details down. (I don’t like forgetting.) The murders are well constructed and cool, but the overall world building is just…not up to par. Imagine if there was a secret office for the giant smuggling ring, like the 51st floor in the PIC tower but BIGGER. Go for the tone of fancy exterior with things more like the rose garden but it’s the deepest depths of the black market with the ring’s home base. That would’ve been WAY better than the bland looking embassy we got. There were literally 4 freaking cases to build up how big they were but they didn’t do anything truly fancy to pay off. And yeah. Alba is just the BIGGEST pain in the ass to get through. But the good characters with the Yatagarasu and Kay and the various other just great stuff is what put it above what we did. It’s just topped 10 times over by smaller cases.
the reveal of dhurkes death hit me like a ton of bricks....i didnt go into all of the previous games blind, due to not having access to them and just watching playthroughs before i played them. spirit of justice was the first ace attorney game i played completely blind...and that reveal emotionally crushed me..especially since in the span of a single case dhurke became one of my favorite characters in the whole series..
It’s not that you can take her out. She’s still a very memorable character I enjoy. But she overstays her welcome in court. Her actual character still works well.
@@Kaempfdog yah by the marathon I meant the many testimonies she puts you through while pretending she's completely unbiased when she practically uses prosecutor as synonymous with demon
The thing about Apollo Justice is that its overarching theme, story, and atmosphere are all incredible. On their own, the cases aren’t the best in the series, but as a whole package, it’s so good. Beanix is such an amazing character
52:05 I’d say the IS-7 incident is the most impactful since not only did it cause all the trouble in AAI2 but also led directly to DL-6 and thusly all the other cases that resulted from that.
On one hand that is true, on the other, it was added later. Creating extra context needed to cement those characters better. But in a way even IS-7 is building off of DL-6 for it to even be created. That’s our thinking anyway.
i didn't really expect to see 5-5 as high up as it was, but I think it's cool that you view it so highly I personally put I2-3 up in the Top 5 because of how it calls back to one of the most important moments of Ace Attorney's world and rights the wrongs of that event, but this was still a great list.
Well hello sir! I didn’t expect to see you here! I’m quite pleased you enjoyed it! Needless to say I based a few attributes on your list and expanded it because I felt every case should be covered at least a little. Dual Destinies I have a soft spot for because even with the messed timeline, and the hand holding, it went above and beyond for the finale. If I recall correctly you didn’t take into account Apollo’s arc from AJ to Dual Destinies where he REALLY resents Phoenix. (This is a hard arc to spot courtesy of the messed timeline.) And trust and respect doesn’t build between them til SoJ. Which was amazing. And you weren’t privy on the Phantom. Who is one of my personal favorite villains.
@@Kaempfdog It's been so long since I made those videos, and I was a lot younger, so it was a bit harder for me to notice stuff like that, haha. I'll need to replay all of the games soon to get a more updated opinion on everything.
@@ItMeRobin I want to hear your opinion on that. I seriously went looking for every piece of fluff dialogue I could and found some REAL gems. Like Phoenix reading the law books from Mia’s collection after he got disbarred to get ideas for his trapping of Kristoph. I remember you were hard on 1-5 and it’s stupid evidence law, but in SoJ detectives and investigators are specifically aware that the Wright Anything Agency tampers with the scene most of the time, but they rarely bring in evidence that isn’t noticed in the investigation. And when they do, the agency has no connections to plant it. And they DEFINITELY would be investigated for that after Phoenix being disbarred. Ema specifically references the tampering in 6-2. (Like the bullet in 4-2 in the safe and Klavier quickly understands who is guilty after that. It’s not like the Wright Anything Agency owns firearms.)
Personal head canon theory thanks to 5-5 hear me out before laughing it off please. Spoilers ahead Athena is on the autism spectrum. First off the constant use of head phones when she was younger because her hearing is to strong and causes her sensory overload. Second widget seems to be telling her what the other person is feeling for her instead of her knowing what they are feeling and confirming it with widget. This type of behavior is consistent with asd. Third she is a teenage prodigy who got her law license when she was super young. Meaning she has a very strong retention and interest in things regarding criminal law. Fourth and most importantly. Mommie isn't feeling well.... So they seem to imply that when she was younger athenas friend were mostly the robots and she didn't see a difference between them and the humans that worked on them. There fore she applied the logic that If mommie was sick then she would go on the table and get better, just like the robots. This is the type of thing that you could see someone on the autism spectrum to do, and goes a long way to explaining why a 11 year old who is smart and loving would be so lacking in for lack of a better term common sense.
@@kingdomkey63 I do see your theory. She is an empath. Widget more helps her see the intensity of it since she doesn’t need widget out of court. She always responds to emotions with her own equal emotional reaction. It’s very rare for her mood to not match who she talks to. And it’s why she’s on an emotional roller coaster constantly switching. And I have seen Empaths often compared to those on the spectrum. Myself included since I am an empath. I don’t know if there is a known connection. So certainly both are possible. But she is meant to be written as an empath.
I actually love I2-4, you feel like your chasing down a big bad which when put into a second to final case hits differently as there's still more, I think Kay's amnesia plot is one of my favorite amnesia plots. It just hurts to see normally cheerful Kay in a state where she doesn't trust herself bc she doesn't know who she is and when the memories support that she killed Jill Crane she confesses such but eventually trusts Edgeworth when he says she would never do it. Jill's revenge plot is pretty cool too. Also Blaise is just such a good villain especially in context of I2-5. An exteremely hatable villain is perfect here and the fact that this marks heavy turning points for Judge Courtney (though it is implied that her attitude through 2-2 and 2-3 is mostly so she could gain Blaise's trust and take him down) and Sebastion who went from being one of the most annoying prosecutors that's just a free for all punching bag to one of my absolute favorite, though of course that doesn't happen until the next case but it starts here where his world is shattered and he realizes everything was a lie.
Okay so I just finished 5-5 and OH MY GOD IT WAS AMAZING! Despite knowing that Fullbright was the phantom from watching all the breakdowns as a child (which is what essentially started my Ace Attorney journey), I still fell in love with the bubbly detective and was still shocked at how different he acted once we started catching on to his real identity. And Blackquill! I wasn't entirely sure how to feel about his character when I first met him but this entire case made me love him so much more than I thought I would. I definitely agree that it deserves the number 2 spot with my number one being Great Ace Attorney 2's finale case being number one. I still need to finish the first trilogy but I'm kinda stuck on not wanting to go through the circus case... Great video, and will forever patiently wait for the next A.A. game, whenever that may be.
@@KaempfdogI prefer the second trilogy over the original, and think that Dual Destinies is better than Ace Attorney 1 and Justice for All. Seeing some Apollo Justice praise is just lovely as it is one of my favorite Ace Attorney games, along with AAI, AAI2, and TGAA1
@@eveeeeeee7813 turnabout tomorrow is a really good case, i mainly love how sometimes it is sorta slowly goes down the rabbit hole, and smiling kid athena creeps me out
I'll admit the case is pretty great overall, but man, do I still hate the Phantom so much. He's such a ridiculous contrivance and excuse for the writers to basically not write a character at all. No backstory, no motive, no name, no face. If that isn't a disappointing main villain idk what is.
People pointed out to me it follows too close to the plot of 1-4 in a few let’s plays. And I pointed out when you take from other cases plot structure, the goal is to surpass it. And 5-5 DEFINITELY accomplishes that with the psychology, the espionage, and just so much great stuff. I think as much as I love UR-1, the culmination of Apollo’s arc with Phoenix is the highlight. SUCH an amazing case.
@@Kaempfdog I noticed the parallels between Athena and Edgeworth, but I think this trial takes that idea and does something new with it. It's probably number 3 or 4 for me (whether it beats 1-4 depends on the day lmao)
@@justyouraveragecorgi I just want people to recognize it’s a top 5 pick worthy option. Whether it gets there for people is if they can see through nostalgia or preferences on twists. And my brother and I worked HARD to fight nostalgia this list. Made me happy to hear it’s his #3 behind 2-4. The further up top we got the less variety in opinion appeared.
6-5 has a line from the judge that is so amazing that I had to put down my 3DS so I could grab my phone and take a picture of it: "While I sympathize with you, witness, you will refrain from firing Gattling guns in this court" Video games are amazing.
@@raphaelcarrillo8038 I actually have played them after the initial comment! My opinion hasn't changed, though. None of the GAA cases have made me cry or feel the emotional weight as 6-5 did, although GAA2-4 and 5 come close.
This is absolutely the most INSIGHTFUL ranking I've ever seen, period. You guys really get this series, in my opinion. I love all your opinions, and it even gave me some more appreciation for a couple cases I've overlooked. You guys being so loving and appreciative of the entire series, and having the mindset that every case is worth the effort, warms my heart a ton as a fellow huge Ace Attorney fan. May the algorithm bless this vid!
Considering you hadn’t played DGS or DGS2 when you recorded this, it’s funny for me to listen to your thoughts since you say statements like “This is the only time X ever happens” or “This is the longest tutorial case.” Having played both DGS games, I’m just sitting here like, “Oh, you innocent souls. You are in for a ride.” Speaking of which, have you two played _The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles_ since it’s come out? If so, how far are you? Both games are fantastic, with DGS2 being Shu Takumi’s best-written game in my opinion. On a separate note, I don’t think replay value should be as overly valued as you make it out to be in your rankings. Visual novels are inherently less replayable than most video game genres, so I think you should value both how good the storytelling is when held up to scrutiny as well as how well the game presents itself to blind players. I understand you two replayed the cases to do this ranking (in order to refresh your memories), but remember that most people are not going to replay an _Ace Attorney_ game, so for things like the convoluted MASON System, replayability should not dismiss that major issue. Yes, things are usually easier in hindsight, but the MASON System still has structural issues such as the time-hopping BS (where you present future evidence to past witnesses). What I’m trying to say is that replayability in AA is fine specifically to see how well the story and writing hold up to scrutiny, but it shouldn’t be used to excuse gameplay quirks that are very convoluted for a first-time player.
I have not played DGS yet as I’m focusing on the crossover for some other lists. But fear not, I WILL get there. Now there’s a few reasons replay value truly became a greater focus for us. Because after the 2nd play through we started to realize this series was just as much designed for multiple plays as it is for the shock value of the 1st. And with how many arcs happening all the time and where they were going with each character is EXACTLY why they need their own specific focus to see what they’re doing because so few people are astute enough to spot it all in 1 go. And there’s laundry lists of details that we didn’t have time to bring up that I could literally make full videos dedicated to what’s happening. (Which yes I intend to.) As for Mason System, we said game mechanics usually didn’t make or break. But that mechanic I had to agree to push down 4-4 down multiple spots because I had been analyzing for so long, I didn’t even remember how confusing it was to navigate because I’d long since figured out the true timeline. So it went from my personal #8 to 10 for the list and it was the worst finale not i1-5. I wasn’t happy because AJ needs to be defended. It should absolutely be said that we know people don’t play this series more than once but we wanted to open the discussion as to why you should truly dissect this series like we did because there’s SO much. Which I’ve done in the comments.
@@Kaempfdog An interesting thing about replaying the games is being able to tell whether the contradictions that previously stumped you were genuinely tough or not. Certain cases can grow on you if the logic you initially struggled on makes sense in hindsight. Sometimes, you might have some negative emotions when you encounter a tough contradiction that cost 3 penalties at the time, but when replaying it after some time, you might realize that it was simply your own fault for being dumb. Ace Attorney contradictions usually fall into two categories: very obvious (to where you just need to focus on one key word) or very cryptic (to where the logic isn’t presented that well). I won’t spoil the DGS games, but there was one particular contradiction in DGS2 that I believe is the toughest one that actually had sound logic. It’s one that caused me to Game Over since the game did not hold your hand whatsoever, but it’s also one where once I saw the answer, I was like, “Damn, that was a seemingly minor detail that actually makes complete sense when I look back.” That was the first time in which I encountered a contradiction that was genuinely tough in the sense that the game gives you the _bare_ minimum of hints, but you still have to figure out the entire scenario yourself without the game pointing at any specific detail. Think of it like the final cross-examination with Luke Atmey. Usually, contradictions are designed to where you can simply focus on one key word of dialogue and look through the Court Record to spot the obvious error. With the example I mentioned, it was one where you had to pay attention to and play the entire scenario from beginning to end in your head. The detail is small enough to where you can only find it by closely examining a certain piece of evidence, but it’s present _just_ enough to where you can’t blame the game for being too cryptic. I even talked with other people on the AA subreddit, and even they talked about how that was the toughest contradiction they faced that didn’t require crazy leaps in logic. For example, the MASON System and 1st Divination Séance in 6-3 both felt pretty convoluted and cryptic to me, but the DGS2 example was one in which the answer made sense in hindsight but also wasn’t easy enough to where you felt like an idiot for getting it wrong. Sometimes, cases I initially fail on tend to grow on me over time if the logic was sound enough to where I was simply an idiot. On the other hand, I still have negative feelings over JfA’s stupid mechanic of carrying over the penalty bar between court and the Magatama since it makes no sense.
yeah SPOILERS AHOY The Great Ace Attorney ticks some of the twist boxes the series hadn't managed yet, including having you get a guilty man acquitted, having a judge be the culprit in a case, having the assistant character fill in as defense attorney in a case, having the villain of the whole game running the damn trial, having the coroner be the killer (that one was particularly bold), having a killer in one case be the victim in another, having the main detective character become a victim, having a victim turn out to not be dead after all, having a previous victim turn out to be one of the culprits, and the victim in THAT case also turn out to be a culprit who was trying to kill the defendant, and so on. not to mention the nonsense they pull with the jury. hell, arguably one of the jurors was the culprit in a case! though, not intentionally. still. they were like "what have we not done yet???" and dumped it all in those games.
This was not only incredibly fun to watch all the way through, but as a fellow Dual Destinies stan I can't describe how validating it felt to hear someone else who loves it for once! The long segment gushing about 5-5 (and having such good things to say about all the other cases in the game too) has absolutely made my day. 6-5 as well, I honestly consider that to be one of the masterpiece cases up there with 2-4 and 3-5, so it's lovely to see it getting some appreciation!
Agreed it’s incredible plus Edgeworth is pretty hilarious and Blackquill just being there to crap on the phantom is still awesome weeks after finishing it
Oh the next game he gets hit by a car, gets launched 30 feet, hits his HEAD, and walks away with a sprained ankle and somehow hardly effects the plot. He hasn’t changed.
Now that I played DGS 1 I can safely say some of the things you say in this video don't apply, I won't spoil it for the ones that didn't play it but the only thing I can say is go play that game, it's great
I was literally so happy about the placement for reunion and turnabout, I kept waiting for it and being like "omg reunion and turnabout is in their top 20" "omg it's in their top 10" "OMG IT'S 6TH" but seriously it's my favorite case for honestly personal/biased reasons and I recognize that some of the final cases are objectively better but it is so close to my heart and everything I've heard from other people is that it's forgettable or mediocre or good the first time but once you know the twist it's boring and I always think no there's so much more to it than that! so it was very cool to see that my very unpopular opinion is shared by someone else on the internet
God, I hope you and your brother get to play The Great Ace Attorney Duology soon. I feel that those games are definitely gonna rock your already so massive list.
Great list! Glad to see some appreciation for cases like 2-2, 5-3 or 5-Sp (basically, Turnabout Big Top done right). You've even made me appreciate cases like 4-4 (a good, but lacking finale IMO) or 5-2 more. Kudos to you, guys!
I really like 4-4 as a finale case, and it's one of my top favorites. There are some dumb things about it - the Mason Investigation system is screwy (despite how much I love it) and the jury shit is kinda hamfisted. Plus, it feels like the writers just remembered they forgot to follow up on all the dangling plot threads from Turnabout Trump and crammed everything into this case. 5-2 isn't a bad case, just kind of mediocre as AA cases go. And 2-2 and 5-3 are definitely up there, though I haven't played 5-6 yet.
i love this video i’ve watched it three times it’s so nice to see people appreciate how good AA4 and AA5 are!!! especially 5-5 i think it’s really underrated (dual destinies is in general) it’s such an emotional and intense case with so many disturbing moments ! amazing video :D
It’s amazing just how different the list would’ve been without our balanced inputs. We genuinely were not expecting it to turn out so balanced with our own biases for different games working out so well. It made these projects a JOY to work on. And there’s more to come!
My two favorite games of the series are Ace Attorney Investigations 2 and Spirit of Justice. Just the fact AAI2 has the balls to add more to DL6 after the first trilogy and does it magnificently. In SoJ I loved case 3 too, it's one of my favorites, just how it pushes everything to its limits with Phoenix literally being a "dead man walking" for the second part of the case, and you end up cross examining the victim through channeling. I don't like Justice for All as much as your brother though. 2-4 felt really difficult for me, and as much as the characters are amazing, the convoluted way you have to twist your mind to solve some things didn't let me the best experience (in one of De Killer's testimony, you have to NOT ask for details in the testimony to get more details, for example). But I agree with most of your Top 10, and how incredible 5-5 and 3-5 are. The only game I haven't played yet is TGAA2, and with how broken the shape of TGAA1 was, I'm eager to see if it reveals itself really good.
TGAA2 is very, very good. TGAA1 just feels like necessary prologue rather than a full length game experience. by itself it's pretty underwhelming, but as the first third or so of the story it's not bad. it just can't come to a climax because all the "oh holy shit" stuff happens in 2-1/2-3/2-4/2-5. I would say it's not as emotional as some other climaxes, but the construction is more sound, and Herlock Sholmes really gets to shine, too. and Susato! Susato rocks so much.
@@dvillines26 I'm starting to see that. Finished the third case and started the fourth. TGAA2 certainly shuffles everything you learned in TGAA1 in a very twisted and interesting way.
@@dvillines26 Funny you say "first third". You personally probably know this, but for the benefit of anyone less familiar with DGS/TGAA's convoluted development history: Takumi was promised a trilogy, but due to decisions from the higher-ups, was forced to pare it down to two installments. Hence, all the major plot beats meant to be spread out over two additional games were compressed into one. The first game literally is one-third of the story. Reception seems positive so I guess it worked out alright (obviously haven't played it myself yet), but that had to have been stressful.
TGAA2 slaps. The first case is a vibe, the second case is there, and then the game starts to get more insane after the third case (in a good way). The fourth is the only S tier non finale IMO, and the fifth surpasses all but Bridge - even beating Farewell My Turnabout.
The Grand Turnabout is my personal favorite in the series, but I understand one’s opinion on the case is limited by your tolerance for character bloat and interactions. I think the last of The Great Ace Attorney 2: Resolve is executed a bit better, but I will never forget the hot air balloon reveal. I can still feel the rush I got from that one to this day.
Idk, to me The Grand Turnabout always felt like something that was desperately written in 1 draft as a way to try and fit 4 standalone cases with little connecting tissue into a framework of a continuous story. Almost all of the plot twists have little to no foreshadowing or hints and they genuinely feel like they were just making up stuff as they went along for the sake of having a "connected story". Stuff like Simon being Dane's son is a clear example of this since they clearly only threw that in because they realized the 3rd case was so self contained that there was basically no other to connect it to the story. The pacing is also a complete mess. The case desperately tries its best to tie loose ends that it feels like the narrative is constantly tripping itself over the story it wants to tell, to the point where I genuinely forgot midway through that the case was about the murder of the president. But no we have to have the section where Sebastian gets redeemed, then we have to have the Lang moping arc, its overall just all over the place. I think the biggest piece of evidence of this case being last minute is the 4th case. That case is extremely long and overly epic for a 4th case, and I think the reason for that is because it was originally meant to be the last case. This is where both Edgeworth and Courtney basically finish their character arcs, which is why both if them feel non-existant in the final case - especially courtney who despite being the main rival, basically has nothing to do and basically just disappears in the 2nd half.
@@xuniepyro7399 Being rude and condescending doesn't win you any extra points, in fact it only makes you look daft. Ignoring that however: > Simon being Dane Gustavia'e son is unexpected? It's just because you're blind. The moment Gustavia mention something about his son being a childhood friend with Pierre Honquet's son is the moment I start to think there's some connection here. I want to take you back AAI. While I do think that game is overall worse than AAI2, one of the things it does better is the execution of the overall story. Every case in that game leads to the smuggling ring that you end up taking down. The first case directly sets up the dynamic between the Yatagarasu and the Smuggling ring, as well as the KG8 incident that ties them together. The second case showcases the use of public airliners that the smuggling ring uses to transport their counterfeit, etc. Every single case in that game directly ties to what will be the main villain of the entire game, so when you finally confront him, the confrontation feels earned and is satisfying from a narrative standpoint (the actual confrontation is long, boring, and way to drawn out). AAI2's idea of a narrative story is to drop vague hints that "one of the things we learned today don't belong and hints at something bigger happening". It feels less like a tightly woven narrative, and instead a desire to make a more traditional "every case is a separate story" narrative, and they changed their mind last second so they added all of these tiny pieces of foreshadowing that gives the illusion of an interconnected story. Dane Gustavia is probably one of the best (or I guess worst) examples of this. The Inherited Turnabout does not feel like a case that was written with a big story in mind, it was written to be a self contained story about Gregory Edgeworth's last case, and how Miles manages to take his place and solve the case for him 18 years later. It is a touching story, and arguably one of the best cases AAI2 has to offer (except The Forgotten Turnabout, that case is almost a masterpiece). However last minute they were like "guys, let's make an actual interconnected story", however the trouble they faced was how difficult it would be to connect the 3rd case, so I guess at some writer's meaning they were like "fuck it, let's just make the bad guy and the victim the dad's of the 2 kids we have in Case 5". It doesn't feel planned, it doesn't feel like this was always the intention. It feels like something they shoehorned in a throwaway line at the last minute just so they can say they "have an interconnected story". > And case 4 is where Edgeworth finish his character arc? Wrong again. Edgeworth's character arc completes only when he told Ray something along the line of, "Simon Keyes is a victim. If only there were a good prosecutor who stand up for him, all these wouldn't have happened." This is why Simon Keyes is an extremely important character, and so is case 5. And don't get me starting on the Batman-Joker parallel between Edgeworth and Simon... Its a thinly veiled attempt to maintain the status quo, not a logical and reasonable character arc. The writers must have realized after writing Cases 3 and 4 is that its going to be difficult to justify having Edgeworth stay as a prosecutor after the events of the case, so they added the whole "I will save people as a prosecutor shtick", and while it's not a bad attempt to save the status quo, its not great either. The biggest problem of course being how nonsensical the premise that Edgeworth presented as the "reason" is. Let's say theoretically that Edgeworth was a prosecutor back in the days of SS-5, with the same worldview he had during AAI2 (also assuming he doesn't know about the SS-5 incident). Would he have been actually able to help Simon? The answer is most likely probably not. For starters, there are a ton of cases happening around Japanifornia at any given time, so the chance that the case of a clobbered journalists meets his eye is fairly slim - so what is required is for Simon to come to him for help as Edgeworth suggested. But this presents with an even bigger problem, Simon knows that one of the perpetrators is THE CHIEF PROSECUTOR. Assuming Simon as a kid even knew that Edgeworth existed, running to one of the perpetrator's underlings for help sounds like an easy one way ticket to the electric chair, as such its unlikely that Simon would've run to Edgeworth for help under any circumstances. Now let's say that Simon did come to Edgeworth for help. What could Edgeworth do? Any attempt to further dig into the case would've likely resulted in Blaise just immediately revoking his prosecutor status, and if you've played AAI2, you'd know that all that resulted in was basically him sucking up to a defense attorney in order to get any investigative rights. In fact, I'd honestly argue that despite what Edgeworth says at the end of the Grand Turnabout, Simon's best chances would've been if Edgeworth was a defense attorney. As we have seen throughout the Phoenix Wright games, its entirely reasonable to take down a massive web of corruption as a Defense Attorney. I do think AAI2 is one of the best games in the series, don't get me wrong. As I have said The Forgotten Turnabout is like one of favourite cases in the entire franchise, right up there with Turnabout Goodbyes. My only problem with it is The Grand Turnabout is a mess of a case. It doesn't feel thought out or fleshed out, it feels like just a bunch of scenerios the writers had to come up with in order to tie loose ends. There are so many examples I can give with this: despite Sebastian appearing on the cover, he only has like 2 whole scenes of relevance at the end of the first half of the case where he mans up to try and take down his dad, and after that he's gone. The case is like a to do list of loose ends to fill: "Finish Sebastian's arc: Check", "Cover why Lang is so sad: Check", etc. If you enjoy it, suit yourself, however don't call people mentally deficient because they have serious problems with how the case is written and many of the writing choices made, it makes you look even stupider.
I have never felt more hopeless and unsure of how to progress when Athena’s black psyche locks popped up. I’m not the biggest fan of Dual Destinies but that case doesn’t deserve near enough credit for the insane story it told
I love Lucahjin’s videos and Tim’s on this series. Tim’s T&T play through of 3-5 actually helped me find a bunch of details I didn’t notice. I wish I could get Tim to see this but I think I’ll have to wait til he plays the Great Ace Attorney before I get his attention.
It's interesting to see how our perspectives can differ so much regarding some characters! Recipe for Turnabout? That'd be towards the bottom of my list because I dislike basically every new character in it apart from Furio and also it succeeded in making me /uncomfortable/ regarding Kudo. They didn't hit the grating mark for you, but they did for me.
Welp, this was pretty cool! Don't quite agree with the DD picks but that's just me! You guys did a great job with the vid and I think I'd like to see more!
@@Kaempfdog Oh, well, I'm a simple person: I'd just put AAI2 and T&T cases at the top and fill the rest with my favourites from AA1, AJ and SoJ. Not sure how exactly I'd range things, I'd have to re-visit everything TBH.
@@Yan_Alkovic we both agreed that investigations 2 was amazing since only 1 case landed on the bottom half even if their best cases couldn’t hold up as much to the absolute greats of the series. We also separated every case instead of looking at it from the grander scope even when it was intended to be seen as one. And that’s why investigations 1 did so poor. (Also because even as a whole investigations 1’s writing is…lesser) We both like the 2nd trilogy WAY more than most too. We recognize if you go the same route as other cases, then the goal is to surpass what they’ve done. And that’s why I like UR-1 more than DL-6. Theres a lot to think about when revisiting the series like finding fluff dialogue. In 3-5 we discovered Franziska snuck the 4th piece of evidence back to Gumshoe and she made a point to say, I went out of my way to give it back! Or how I realized in AJ, Phoenix only read the law books Mia gave him after his disbarment, and that’s how he plotted to catch Kristoph.
@@Yan_Alkovic investigate EVERYTHING in 4-4. You get so much great info. I think it’s the bookcase with the magic books in them in the 1st investigation as Apollo you find that out. But there’s also a lot of great stuff like Phoenix discovered Apollo as Trucy’s sister pretty early since Trucy gave her mother’s line to discover her lineage and the locket had the bracelets visible in them. And Phoenix started suspecting Kristoph IMMEDIATELY from when Kristoph was the only person on the bar association to say he shouldn’t lose his badge. And the whole “Dark Age of the Law” is just Phoenix’s war with Kristoph. Or in the people’s eyes, the guy who will fight any corruption ANYWHERE, vs someone who APPROVES NEW ATTORNEYS. Plus they both forged evidence and rigged trials against each other putting doubt on Phoenix’s win over Chief Gant, Manfred Von Karma, and Godot. And the media attack was Roger Retinz. The only one who pinned the Dark age on Blackquill was Fulbright. (No ulterior motive right?)
I remember putting off dual destinies for so long because at the time I was so strongly against the transition to 3D and the accompanying changes. I tried to convince myself to play 5-1 numerous times yet failed until I really hammered through to reach the proper meat of the game. And yeah from there I was absolutely hooked. I was quick to shift my opinion on many things, including the voice acting in game (which while I agree is weaker than the original trilogy it isn't nearly as big an issue as I thought it out to be) and I grew to love the more vibrant animations and environments that the series could now offer. I finished 5-5 today and it has went from what I initially thought would probably be my least favourite AA game to contending for my absolute favourite (the other contender being AAI2). I could gush on for so long about what I thoroughly enjoyed about DD its unbelievable, but I'd say my favourite change has to be the greatly enhanced breakdowns which provide so much more character than they ever did in the 2D games. DD managed to get me so invested to where I didn't actually want to finish 5-5 because I knew that it would be the end of an amazing story, the same way I felt at the end of AAI2. At least I can play through the dlc now, but I say with absolute certainty that DD managed to smash my expectations out the park.
Great video! The rankings are overall something I’d agree with, and your back and forth is really engaging, as well as providing some nice criticisms or compliments to the cases. Just high quality stuff, would love to see more! Your love for the series really carries through ^^
The only difference between Franziska and Young Franziska is the length of her whip, and the power of her whip. As a 13-year old, she wields the Disciplinary Action.
I am so happy that you guys have 4-1 as 5, It’s personally my favorite case of all times, I’m also happy that you got turnabout corner and succesion in the second half of the list, AJ is serverely overhatted and really underatted, It’s my favorite AA game by far
Phoenix forging evidence in turnabout Trump is one of my favorite moments in the series, the fact that he got back at Kristoph in the exact same way Kristoph did to make him lose his attorney’s badge is so fucking cool
2-4 drained the HELL out of me. This case was so exhausting but man it was worth it. It was captivating and intense I loved it so much. I could never go through that pain again though haha.
Your videos are incredibly good to watch in the background or while eating food, perfect balance of chill and extremely entertaining. Keep up the great work!
What a great video, I had so much fun listening to you guys' opinions! (Also, YES, 4-1 and 2-2 appreciation, they 100% deserve those spots!) I might not be the biggest DD fan, but gOD you're so right with 5-5, that case is so good, and GOD I love the Phantom, they're such an interesting character (I still remember when it clicked for me who the Phantom was, when you get that flashback of Aura saying she lowered the ladder because the detective told her to...like, full body chills, I was stunned). And god, little Athena with her mom... I'm a total Investigations 2 sucker, so it's great to see all the love for it, too. Finding out I could play as GREGORY? Priceless. That said, Recipe up so high? Nope, can't agree there, no way (I hate you, Kudo, I HATE YOU).
3-3 is a very unique case. That’s what gets that one up so high. The Gumshoe focus, the underhanded setup for 3-5 with Godot, Phoenix completely mastering his bluff tactics, the CRAZY diverse cast, we just can’t really fault much at it. Kudo isn’t a highlight but we don’t think he’s bad.
@@Kaempfdog Fair points! I guess I just don't vibe much with the one off characters (...ok, Furio's fun, I'll admit it lmao), but I can totally see your point! Especially about Gumshoe, I do love him there (and it's making me wish we could see him back after the timeskip...maybe an Athena game that brings back Gumshoe and Franziska? I can dream lmao). I wonder how the DGS cases are gonna stack up against the rest. I haven't played them yet, but I've heard so many good things about them, so I'm def curious!
I thought I was the only person who saw 2-2 as one of the best in the series. It was so long, and almost draining at points, but the great writing, gradual increase in tension, and the insane payoff makes it one of the most memorable to me.
It’s actually quite short by todays standards. And one of my FAVORITE comments was someone hyped about 2-2 and getting more excited the longer we put it up the list. And it’s an AMAZING setup case that puts the rest to shame in all honesty. As it’s another 3-5 buildup. We adore it. It’s true there was a point I wanted i2-3 higher, but I loved this case SO much more on revisits than I thought I would.
These set of videos were fantastic guys. Made me appreciate the series in a whole new way, especially the newer cases which have trouble sticking in my mind. Also, I don't wanna be THAT guy, but Godot isn't pronounced Go-Dot. It's pronounced Go-doh. I made the similar mistake, but it's actually based on an old play called "Waiting for Godot".
5-4 is the one case I cannot replay. Ever. Apollo losing his best friend hurts way more than Mia dying. Clay is built up a lot by Apollo and it fucking hurts, especially when you see the way Apollo changes. Also I got way too attached to Clay immediately. He just seems so damn cool? The case makes me cry. Which probably is why I agree with it being so high. I also think 4-4 would be a bit higher for me, just for the fact that it took me forever to actually present the forged diary page. I just sat and stared at the screen for a good fifteen twenty minutes. Knowing what it did to Phoenix made it so hard. I think 4-1 would probably be my number 2, with 2-4 being one because fuck me Matt Engarde’s turn is chills inducing. But so is Kristoph’s turn. And I love Apollo so damn much so 4-1 gets points for me because Apollo is best MC and Klavier is best prosecutor. I’d be extremely sad if they never brought Apollo back.
I was going to get really sad you didn’t like 5-4 and then got very happy it was touching for you. Yes I agree a thousand fold. 4-4 I pushed down from my personal #8. But because I’d figured out the true timeline and had all the gaps filled in so long ago, I realized I’d have to push it down and make a dedicated video to it since so few will EVER catch those details since so few play the games more than once. 4-1 is right where it belongs for us. It works off 4-4 so well and it’s easily just the most mind blowing opening EVER and it kinda puts the rest to honest shame. We love it so much but we love the big finales too much to EVER put it above those 4. They are just too good.
@@Kaempfdog fair enough lol. I can’t exactly disagree with your list. Objectively the cases in the top half are placed in the right order. But opinions and emotional impact are different for each person- I mean. I’m genuinely stuck between loving 5-5 and hating it for the sole fact that it genuinely hurts my soul to play through because I hate the way everyone has been traumatized. DD and SoJ are the two games that I think work the best in terms of emotions (and yes it is partially because I love Apollo to death) and I can’t argue the placement of their cases being so high no matter how much it hurts to play through 5-4, 5-5, and 6-5.
Those two videos were quite enjoyable. Sadly I had to skip the AAI2 one's just to avoid spoilers, but even then the amount of work you put in here is amazing, subbed and keep it up!
I ... I'm not that long in fandom, honestly. from last year. but I really loved this franchise but I am especially attached to Apollo. I really loved him as a character. he is literally my favorite among everyone else. and I understand that his story ends in aa6. but ... I still want him to stay there somehow. even without telling anything new about him. I just don't want Capcom to get rid of him. maybe he will somehow be returned in future releases, as was done with Maya, Miles, Pearl and Larry sorry, I just don't want him to disappear, even if the ending 6-5 hints at his exit from the plot. he's just my precious little boii💔 and I love that you gave Dual Destinies such a high rating, especially Turnabout for Tomorrow. probably my favorite game in the series) and you approached this ranking so responsibly, it deserves lots of respect! thank you for doing this! you did a great job!) upd: and yes, more Athena in the future games, Capcom, please!!!! I love her very much too)
Just had a convo with you in the comments of a SaveData vod and thought I'd check out this video. Loved it! (Even if I do disagree with the placements) Also I'm convinced that purple is Phoenix's color tbh
So, I have this theory about the Judge, about why he never charges anybody with perjury. It's because he was once cross examined by Edgeworth, and he got to experience just how difficult it is to be 100% accurate. Because his testimony almost got detective Gumshoe arrested, and he felt so bad about that, he now allows multiple testimonies in his cases, because he knows how your mind can play tricks on you.
I am all onboard for defending the Judge. But just remember Blackquill never filed against any kids and there are a NUMBER in DD, and there are multiple occasions prosecutors intentionally coach a testimony. Edgeworth, Von Karma, Franziska, you get the idea. Phoenix is always apart of conspiracy cases. So I always feel like he is more lax with people in Wright Anything Agency cases. At least that’s how I interpret. But your theory DOES make sense. (Or he’s senile and spends more time looking for dentures already in his mouth than he does getting all the paperwork done after a case. But I love the judge too much to besmirch him.)
That’s the kind of series dedication I like to see! Also…4-2? Why 4-2? Love the case don’t get me wrong, it’s just a unique choice. You like Wesley Sticker’s panty jokes? XD
for me my favorite case though out the entire series has to be Turnabout goodbyes one of the main reasons is Manfred Von Karmas breakdown which is my second favorite breakdown in the entire series
I do love 1-4 a lot. But when a series goes on this long and to such tremendous detail, sooner or later even the most iconic cases start to show they have been surpassed. It’s still an all time great regardless. That’s our thought process.
@@Kaempfdog when I first played 1-4, I thought it was so cool and iconic, and while I didn't rush it, I completed it in two days because I was worried about Edgeworth and it really made me second guess myself if Miles.had done it in the begging, as well as being worried for Miles in general. but after 2-2, 2-4 and 3-5 and some other favorite cases of mine, i
I have to say, for this being you two's first videos, these are high quality! I wouldn't have guessed if it wasn't for me checking the channel to see if there was any other videos made. My only suggestion is I notice there are little notes put down, and these flash way too quickly. Only for like, a second. There was a few times I had to rewind the video just to pause at the right moment to see what they were. Best to keep those there a little longer so that isn't necessary, but that is a minor nitpick. Can't say much about the ordering because I agree with basically everything, with maybe a few places switched around.
Turnabout for Tomorrow and Bridge to the Turnabout are also my Top 2 cases. They're so well written, I doubt any other case will have a bigger impact than those two.
I always found it very interesting that young Ema takes Phoenix lying to her so much worse than getting a guilty verdict on accidental manslaughter in bad ending.
I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks 5-5 is underrated. The Phantom is such a great villain, and I especially love how he's been very unassuming for the whole game, Fulbright is the last person you'd expect to be the overarching antagonist. It's also really interesting how he completely lost his sense of self after living as other people for so long, it really feels like he's not even a person
I wanted it up higher but eventually realized just how freaking awesome 2-2 was on serious inspection. They are unquestionably my favorite side cases. Why don’t you tell me what your top 10 are? I’m fascinated by your opinions.
okay sure!- im playing case four of dd right now so i wont include any cases after it or in soj 10.AAI2-4 9.1-4 8.DGS-5 7.DGS-3 6.AAI-5 5.1-5 4.AAI2-3 3.2-4 2.AAI2-5 1.3-5 and my top 5 least favorites would be 5.VS-1 4.4-1 3.2-1 2.1-1 and the worst is DGS-2
@@themonoworth96 well DGS certainly has my attention for that many to appear in your top 10, and 1 in your bottom 5. (Have yet to play it still.) But I am mildly offended 4-1 is that low for you. Out of top 10 sure, but BOTTOM 5? Other than that everything you have a solid argument for! I fully understand why you love those cases. I look forward to when you get through the last 2 games of the 2nd trilogy!
@@Kaempfdog okay the reason its so low is cuz i got spoiled who the killer was! so thats all the reasoning i have lol And for DGS-2 its the only case in the series to have no cross examinations so it kinda bored me way to much but then you have cases like DGS-3 which have the level of 2-4s twists!
@@themonoworth96 does that ruin 4-1 for you that much? I mean at the same time all intro cases spoil their killers but 2, and 4-1 is one of them. (And also a cool parallel because the finale spoils. Very nice video series. One detail that might have added to it is having boht of your own rankings for a case revealed when the case comes up so we can see both you opinions better. Other then that amazing video duo
I really hate Dual Destinies because it retconned a lot of Apollo Justice. Turnabout Academy is full of terrible anime tropes, pretty silly case logic, and misunderstands what the dark age of the law was about. The biggest weakness of Turnabout for Tomorrow is that the culprit is only following orders so it doesn't feel like the case is actually solved at the end (imagine if Shelly de Killer was the only culprit in Farewell, My Turnabout). Kristoph didn't kill Zak because he lost in a game of poker it's because he shamed him by choosing Phoenix as his attorney over him and to cover his tracks. Lotta didn't regress as a character because she never changed even if the topics she reported on did.
I love your video! I'm honestly a big fan because it's refreshing like old TH-cam. The low to middling production quality has a ton of charm that's been lost. I'd love for more videos, maybe on Fire Emblem, Persona, or even Dragon Quest, because I got a gut feeling if you love Fire Emblem, you love those too. At least I do lol.
Hate to disappoint but those actually aren’t on my radar. But I’ve been giving it thought on where to go once we cover the series proper. There’s Pokémon, Zelda, and I may even cover some anime and other tv shows too. But this series requires a LOT of attention 1st. So that’s what we will work on. And it was designed after the old Phoenix Wrong videos from WAY back in the day. We both loved the final results.
@@Kaempfdog Unfortunately, I don't have a lot of free time these days to play games, but watching people play the series and do their own voice impressions of the characters just brightens my day every time. :)
We call this sector the guilty pleasure sector. 3-3 and 1-5 are both upper tier cases but their edge was found on our own personal preferences. We each had 1 case. For my brother it was 3-3. Mine was 1-5. In our balancing debate 1-5 was the one that took more hits. It’s in my personal top 10 cases. That being said, 3-3 is a GREAT one. Just pure raw ace attorney silliness. Still finding time to be serious. Still having a GREAT case for Gumshoe specifically. But there’s VERY little we can say that’s bad in the case.
Personally, my absolute favorite is I2-3. It was the most emotional case, it made me cry so much for Jeff and Kate, it goes to show how the best case came from side characters. It was so emotional that I kept replaying it for like 3 times.
Yeah Bridge to the Turnabout was quite an intense experience especially when you consider that this is literally 11 years in game having come full circle, maybe even 17 cause let's not forget that this whole mess started when (spoilers beyond this point, don't read if you're planning to get the OG trilogy) Morgan's first husband left her cause she wasn't going to be the Kurain master and took both Daliah and Iris with him. If that didn't happen Daliah might not have stolen that 2 million diamond leading to her killing her step sister Valerie cause she and Terry Fawles wanted to squeal resulting in Terry game ending himself and leaving Mia and Miles (who were both just starting out as defense and prosecutor respectively) emotionally scared (Mia more then Miles most likely), escaping justice while poisoning Diego "Godot" Armando's coffee to cover her tracks leading to her fateful encounter with Phoenix and attempting to kill him when her sister Iris couldn't get the poison bottle Daliah used on Diego 8 months prior resulting Doug Swallow getting electrocuted and leaving Pheonix to take the blame only for Mia to finally get Daliah locked up and put on the death penalty but the end of Turnabout Memories showed that now even Phoenix was pained by the destructive deception left in Daliah's wake. Thank God Diego became a prosecutor cause things certainly would've gone way worse if he didn't eavesdrop on Morgan and Pearl, then there's the first half of the final trial day which finally brought the whole tragedy to end but it was only the calm before the storm. And then there's Diego's gripe with Phoenix, that final stretch of the court hearing really felt like the storm had finally set in and it became more then a trial, it felt like an intense battle of wording, lectures and revelations and in the end Phoenix could finally get some rest after the intense struggle he's had to live with for the last five years while patching things up with Iris who was his actual girlfriend during those 8 months not to mention getting Diego to respect him as a capable successor to Mia. Eleven years of pain, murder, deception, mental trauma and it took a single lawyer to bring it all to a close. Though I do have to give kudos to Godot for helping Phoenix to realize Maya was channeling Daliah that entire time and despite what happened to her leading up to it I'm sure she'll be alright as long as she's got Phoenix and Pearl with her.
Rise From The Ashes is my personal favorite of the series, with The Inherited Turnabout very close behind. Both just feel so grandiose and massive in scale, the settings they're set at are pretty fun to investigate, (other than the prosecutor's parking lot) and the length feels justified for both. Hell, The SL-9 incident is honestly a pretty scary part of the Ace Attorney series, I really feel for Ema. And Damon Gant is by far my favorite villain in the series. For TIT, the way you go from the past to the present throughout the case is very smooth and easy to follow, which is how Turnabout Succession should have done it, but I digress. Either way this case is a fantastic introduction to what Gregory Edgeworth was really like, and he is honestly one of my favorite attorneys from this series, this case alone pushes him that high. He's exactly what defense attorneys need to strive to be like, detail oriented, kind, smiling even when the tide is against them, etc. overall, Investigations 2 is just really good and has fantastic writing, and is my favorite of all the Ace Attorney games.
You guys earned yourself a new subscriber with this AWESOME ranking! It just warms my heart to see fellow AA fans to go through every case we know and love in such detail. I salute to you and look forward to future videos.
I definently wouldn't put the final case of DD nearly that high just because 6-5 and 2-4 were so phenominal that they crush it but that's just me. Also Archie Buff is amazing and her early connection with Apollo is great and she's epitomy of someone who's shut herself off to the world because of trauma. Although Ga-ran not actually being a valid queen feels a bit Dues Ex Machina like if she was then oh no everyone is dead.
Alright, earlier I ranked the bottom half, now time for the Upper half!(HUGE SPOILERS WARNING) #20- Turnabout Target(AAI2-1)- Alright this case is personally my favorite intro case and easily the 2nd best intro case. All the characters here are awesome, say Edgeworth, Knightley, Kay, the President, De Killer, the Nicole, Huang nothing to complain. The environment is awesome, and the case has already high stakes, and has it's awesome moments too. It's length feels warranted. Hits you right away, I would put it at #19(my opinion). An awesome case., A tier from me. #19-The Forgetten Turnabout(AAI2-4). This case is really good! Some things led this case down, like the comic duo, which wasn't exactly bad but not the best either. And the case may feel a bit too negative in middle, but it's purpose is served well. Kay is the best here easily, Blaise may be one dimensional and his dialogues do get old, but you don't expect him to have a 3 Dimensional character, and him being straight evil works well. Sebastian and Courtney are much more better here and make it awesome. Edgeworth having logic chess against Blaise is great too. I feel this case sets up the finale of this game perfectly. Again A tier from me and a ranking of #18 from me #18- Turnabout Reminiscence(AAI1-4) I love this case! If only the other cases were at this standard... this case got me hyped up for the finale(which was a disappointment). This case has a lot of data, which I don't mind at all, but other people do ig. And yes the setting is bland. But the rest of this case is awesome. Having Manfred on your side was done well, and young Franziska and Edgeworth duo is so awesome! Gumshoe and Kay are so well done, and Detective Badd is excellent, an underrated character. Calisto Yew is also done really well, and the final moments of the case were so intense! But the best..... is the DAMN JUDGE! His excitement on everything, and to get to cross examine him was so awesome! This case is really good, this case carries AAI1 to some extent I must say. I may sound crazy, but I would put this case on #16. Again an A tier. #17- Turnabout Reclaimed (5-6). Alright so this case is pretty good, it has some weaknesses tho, like after the finale of DD it is way too happy, it's replay value is quite low, and thanks to the finale some of the characters don't hit the same way(DD's messed up timeline). But as a case, it's great. Phoenix is great, Blackquill is still good, The defendant Buckler is awesome, the dolphin is adorable, the doctor, is great, de Plume isn't the best but not the worst and has some arc. And Rimes is really well done, and his testimony "The Dissing of Phoenix wright" LOLOLOLOLOLOOL🤣🤣 JUST AWESOME. I would put this case on #17, tho a B+ tier as I expected the case to be better, still great. #16- Turnabout Corner(4-2) This case, has a lot of missed potential but still is underrated. Stickler is...... uuhhh not so good, thanks to him this case became the 'panties case'. But the rest is decent. Phoenix isn't really that good, but what makes this case good are Ema, Klavier, Trucy to some extent. The defendant Wocky is good and same for the culprit. Again Apollo doesn't have much arc there, biggest weakness of this game. This case has good elements which could have been much better, but then again it speaks about the standard the franchise has set up ig. A tier of B- and same ranking. #15- The Cosmic Turnabout(5-4). OMG! THIS CASE! I LOVE IT! The makers made a huge mistake separating the finale from this, they should have combined this and the finale, would have been so awesome! But nevertheless it is still awesome. Apollo is expressed so well here, blackquill too is done so well, Fulbright is there..... Starbuck, as hilarious he can get, he is done awesome. Oh and director cosmos, A NUTCASE WHICH IMPROVES THIS CASE TOO! And the end is just .......great. I would put this on #14 and a tier of A. if only it were combined with the finale... it would have got a S tier. #14-Turnabout Academy(5-3) The case where we play as Athena in DD? Awesome! Athena's character is well expressed here, she is much more enjoyable and fun to be around. Apollo and Phoenix are done well too. And now to the stronger elements, Juniper is so well fleshed out here, Newman, or should I say newwoman (LOL) IS good, a bit overt the top, but it makes sense. Huge o Conner is so well done, his behavior in the start makes sense. And blackquill is so good here. The Moment where the trio and Blackquill cheer up Athena, heart warming. Means was great too, in the end he went over the top which wasn't necessary but still great. Klavier is as good as he was, except his "Objection!" Clip. And Scuttlebutt, tho not the best, she is still really good. The voice acting is mediocre, and the investigation can get a bit too easy(problem of DD) still awesome. Would put this case on #13 and a tier of A+. Just missed a bit from being in S tier. #13- Rise from the Ashes(1-5). Oh this case it gets way too much hate, and is my personal favourite case in the first game. This case may be long, but the story, the gameplay and the characters are so awesome and that it holds its first time play value quite well, and I believe this is a case which gets better as much more you play it. THIS case expresses Edgeworth so well, and the reason Edgeworth leaves is much more justified in this case I believe, Ema is awesome, Lana is fantastic and underrated, Jake Marshall is great too! Meeting is great here, I had low expectations from him but he improved the humour, Angel Starr is ok too, oh and Damon Gant......one of the best villains in the series. The investigations are underrated and one of the best if not the best. Here are the issues which bring the case down. Angel Starr's 4 testimonies, I believe it could have been reduced to 2 or 3, the stage where you have to show how the vase esmebles the blue badger is a huge blow to this case, this case has a difficulty spike too which makes it worse. Moreover, the Phoenix in this case isn't of AA at all rather of post-T&T, which is a huge flaw. Still I love this case, and I will put it at #11. S tier for me. #12- The Recipe for Turnabout(3-3) Alright, I would put this case on #21 for the following reasons. This case is way too all cherry and hilarious. Victor Kudo is good, Godot is decent, Phoenix and maya are really good, Furio Tigre is ok, but the chef............CRINGE! Maggey is decent, but the idea of Phoenix being impersonated by Tigre is so poorly executed. The way you catch him is good, gumshoe has his one of the best appearances but not enough for me to lift this case to the top half. It doesn't deserve the hate it gets, but still at #21 for me, a tier of -B from me. #11-The Magical Turnabout(6-2)- This case is really good. Trucy is the best expressed here in my opinion, Apollo is awesome, nahyuta is the damn weakling again! But it's his first case, so it becomes a bit less annoying. Retina..... one of the most hatable villains, perfectly executed. The backstop to the Gramaryes is good too. Nothing in particular bad, just a bit lacking to make it above RFTa. Still awesome, a tier of A from me, #12 from me. #10- Turnabout Succession- Alright, now to the top 10 of the series. This case has the highest replay value. This case has some huge strengths and some huge weaknesses. The Mason system, a wonderful idea but not so well executed. Thanks to you it is now much more easier to understand it. Kristoph is awesome, the reporter is good too, drew and Vera mishan are good too, Zak is good too. The flashback case is so traumatic, and yet so well done. Klavier both young and present are done well. The weaknesses are that this case is all Phoenix, barely about Apollo, and also the way you punish Kristoph, hence the Jury System is cheap. But rest is great. A tier of B+ and same ranking. #9- The Grand Turnabout- I love this case too. This case expresses the best of Edgeworth, Shi-long Lang, Sebastian, Courtney! All of them are awesome. Kay is great too. John Marsh and the bond with him and Cputrney is awesome. Franziska is awesome too. Blaise and Patricia get justice served to them, oh and the mastermind........ SIMON KEYES! I DIDNT EXPECT HIM TO BE IT! He is one of the most underrated AA villains! And the president being fake, just awesome. Oh and Gumshoe's arc comes to a good close I guess. Ray is awesome too. Truly the Grand turnabout
i was inspired by this list to make my own ranking of all the cases (except the crossover) and this is what i came back with (i combined a couple cases together when they were pretty much just the same case split in two for some reason) 50: The Kidnapped Turnabout 49: Turnabout Big Top 48: The Lost Turnabout 47: The Adventure of The Unbreakable Speckled Band 46: The Adventure of The Great Departure 45: The First Turnabout 44: Recipe for Turnabout 43: Turnabout Visitor 42: Turnabout Countdown 41: The Foreign Turnabout 40: Turnabout Serenade 39: Turnabout Ablaze 38: Turnabout Sisters 37: Turnabout Airlines 36: The Adventure of The Blossoming Attorney 35: Turnabout Beginnings 34: Turnabout Memories 33: The Imprisoned Turnabout 32: Turnabout Samurai 31: Turnabout Storyteller 30: Turnabout Reminiscence 29: The Monstrous Turnabout 28: Turnabout Target 27: Rise From the Ashes 26: The Adventure of The Unspeakable Story 25: Turnabout Corner 24: The Stolen Turnabout 23: Turnabout Time Traveller 22: The Adventure of The Clouded Kokoro 21: The Memoirs of The Clouded Kokoro 20: The Rite of Turnabout 19: The Magical Turnabout 18: Turnabout Reclaimed 17: The Forgotten Turnabout 16: Reunion, and Turnabout 15: Turnabout Succession 14: The Grand Turnabout 13: The Adventure of The Runaway Room 12: The Return of the Great Departed Soul 11: Turnabout Goodbyes 10: Turnabout Academy 9: The Inherited Turnabout 8: Farewell, My Turnabout 7: Turnabout Trump 6/5 Twisted Karma and His Last Bow/The Resolve of Ryunosuke Naruhodo 4: Bridge to The Turnabout 3: Turnabout Revolution 2/1: The Cosmic Turnabout/Turnabout for Tomorrow
I’m happy to see such great representation for Dual Destinies. I won’t give any criticisms on your opinions except 1. And I always tell this to people that make these lists. 1-1 should ALWAYS be on the bottom. It is the mere framework of the series that every case builds off of. None of the characters have become the ones we know and love because their personalities haven’t been established in the slightest. It is simply establishing the rules of the games and nothing more. Everything else comes after and can’t even be plugged into this case later with context. Yes Ace Attorney owes everything to this singular case, but finding what you like and dislike in a case is like putting blocks on a scale. Good blocks on the like side, and bad blocks on the dislike side. Don’t get me wrong, i1-3 is RIDDLED with flaws and we are understandably relentless of it. But if you can find ONE GOOD THING, that’s something that wasn’t said about 1-1. i1-3 is VERY WEIGHTED on the bad block side. But it still has a number of good blocks. Kay, Shi Long Lang, a few fun puzzles. The reason we say this is because 1-1 has no blocks. No bad blocks sure, but no good ones either. It’s JUST the scale. That’s how we looked at it. Other than that, great list!
@@Kaempfdog that is very true. i think the reason i put it up so high was because 1-1 is kinda the perfect tutorial case (minus the fact it doesn’t teach you how to press whoops) it teaches you exactly what to do, and does it quickly enough so veteran players can get through what they already know, but i guess in that same sense, it’s a case that lacks any staying power. going back to the blocks metaphor, i think it’d be fair to argue 1-1 doesn’t really have any blocks because of how little there really is to it.
I got curious, so I crunched some numbers to find what the "best" Ace Attorney game is on average according to these videos. Of course, this was just for fun, but I think some of these numbers are rather surprising. These will be ranked on mean, with Standard Deviation, Median, and Range all listed in parentheses after in that order. All values are rounded to the hundredths place. Lower numbers are better for all values. 8. Investigations 1 - Mean: 29. (8.12, 27, 20). 7. Ace Attorney: Pheonix Wright - Mean: 22.8. (13.03, 22, 32). 6. Spirit of Justice - Mean: 21.83. (12.06, 24.5, 31). 5. Trials and Tribulations - Mean: 20.8. (14.84, 21, 36). 4. Justice for All - Mean: 19.25. (17.56, 17.5, 36). 3. Dual Destinies - Mean: 18.33. (11.29, 16, 32). 2. Investigations 2 - Mean: 15.8. (7.4, 19, 17). 1. Apollo Justice - Mean: 15.25. (10.81, 13, 25). Yes, Apollo Justice! I certainly like Apollo Justice more than most, but I was rather surprised. Some facts according to the statistics: Investigations 1 is on average equal in quality to Turnabout Big Top. Investigations 2 is the most consistent Ace Attorney game, with the lowest Standard Deviation. Of course, this happens to be good consistency. On the other hand, Investigations 1 is the second most consistent. However, it's very clearly the worst compared to the rest. There are only gaps from spots 8-7 and 3-2 in means. This is a pretty good indication that Ace Attorney actually has stayed fairly consistent in quality, even increasing in quality, since its release to the present. With what I've played of DGS, I'm sure that trend will stay true. Justice for All is by far the least consistent game with a very large standard deviation and range. Overall, all three original games are the least consistent with quality. Another quick comment: Lucahjin somehow followed your exact order of events in Apollo Justice's last case, despite it being blind. Since that was the first way I accessed it, that might show why I tend to like it more than many others.
Actually someone compiled a giant list on a google doc and sent it to me. I am so happy you guys are paying such close attention! Also I did notice Lucah chose that route. If you start with the Wright office it basically does the rest for you. Also I lowered 4-4 from my personal #8 to #10 when I noticed the issues I forgot about. So I’ll probably talk about 4-4’s main timeline for a video as it’s clearly needed. Both my brother and I love AJ. It’s neither of our favorite but I think it lands at #2 for both of us. My #1 is obviously DD and his is JFA. Somehow that managed to perfectly average this list aside from investigations 1. Which I feel bad did so poorly…but it deserved it when we went deep diving. We hold the 1st and 2nd trilogy on equal footing. Each made mistakes or were topped and aged poorly over time. As for DGS although neither of us have touched it yet, we are looking forward to it. (We had to revisit the crossover for other lists. DGS will remain separate and will be review like this video. Which will take a WHILE.) I give you my kudos for doing this though! Nice work!
@@Kaempfdog Thanks so much for the response! Your videos were absolutely incredible, and I can tell how much love went into them. I only recently started 5-3 (I've skipped over all the cases in games I haven't finished), but I'm even more excited knowing how much you love DD
1 is actually pretty consistent in how good it is. The only low parts I'd say are all of Turnabout Samurai after Trial 1 and all of Rise From the Ashes after the 5 hour mark.
I really loved your videos! They're very high quality and I really enjoy your perspectives and opinions. I hope you guys play the Great Ace Attorney and make a list for that. You just got a new subscriber!
Great list. This is the second time I watched both videos, but In still think the list is great. I'm almost done with my 5th or 6th run of AA 1 but once I finish Aus der Asche I can finally play Justice for all for the first time. Btw. did you guys know that Shu Takumi wrote the script for JfA and T&T while extremely drunk? The best case in the series was written while the writer was drunk. Amazing how he made up such an amazing murder plot while being intoxicated.
You know considering the murder plots of those games are PARTICULARLY asinine, that checks out. Like Luke Atmey’s and Furio Tigre’s plans in particular. 3-5 is a freaking accomplishment though.
While I believe you, I'm perplexed at the fact because despite being a long time fan of Ace Attorney, I had never heard of it. When and where did Shu Takumi say this?
Ok…ummm we love Gumshoe’s biggest case for him. We love the crazy cast wholeheartedly, and it’s just trying to be really funny most of the time. I was upset 1-5 tumbled a LOT from my list but what beat it out I made peace with. What issues do you have with 3-3? Most common thing I see is it doesn’t add to the Mia stuff you want to get back to. Or maybe people can’t get behind Kudo or Armstrong. That’s all I really see.
@@Kaempfdog For me, every attempt at humor fell flat. Kudo is terribly annoying, Armstrong is just uncomfortable to me in a way that’d be too long to explain, and while the Tigre impersonating Phoenix bit is pretty good, the man himself is a PAIN to take down. The tech corporation feels like a tacked on aspect of the whole shebang, and Viola on paper is SUPER solid as an emotional core, but the case does LITERALLY NOTHING with her aside from being the prop to flesh out Tigre. Not to mention the logic of the case itself… Now, I haven’t played the game in quite a while, but I was able to get through the first two games of the trilogy relatively fine and only got stuck… maybe twice? Not Recipe. Recipe was mind-boggling to me; how you’re supposed to logically discern the folding screen shenanigans is beyond me. Again, I’ll need to play it again (and bc I really wanna play the trilogy again in general ngl), but I’ll keep an eye out for if this still holds true on a replay. EDIT: CANNOT believe I forgot to mention the whole Gumshoe/Maggey thing: HATED IT. It was miserable to see Gumshoe’s attempts at wooing his crush result in her getting furious. It bogged the case down and just leaves the whole mood soured. The plus? Mia and Maya are cute! I like the outfits a lot it’s a nice change of pace.
@@Cosplaybuddygiraffes I fully understand that Kudo and Armstrong don’t land for everyone. We found ways to find them entertaining. Yes Kudo is pervy and awkward. But his way of hiding it is so bad it’s hysterical. Armstrong as a gay stereotype is…weird. But he is so unbelievably weird that we forget the stereotype and start to find him hilarious. We love how he says that his teacher told him he was awful and needed 5 more years of training and he IMMEDIATELY went to open Tres Bien after that. Plus it’s not so bad that they play the pronoun game when even he can’t decide. Its so bizarre we can’t help but enjoy it. It’s like he’s just messing with everyone. Which…is exactly what he’s doing. He’s acting silly and being distracting so you forget the bigger issues of him with Tigre and it bites you back later. Viola we enjoy. Mainly because she’s so far up the chain you can’t even bring her to the stand. One of the VERY few. What was needed was Bruto to be used. She was underused but not enough to hold much at all against her. You just need a more up in your face of what a threat this family is. The Kitakis are a good example. As for the Gumshoe/Maggey story, yes the conflict is definitely iffy. But we like how it’s portrayed. The execution needed a little work mid case. I’d find it funny if she got mad at him for trying to openly throw her a lifeline. That would have been priceless. But it’s so damn good for Gumshoe. Maggey was the one that needed a bit more work. And I’ll give her a pass due to her stress of the murder case of being betrayed by Armstrong and losing everything she thought she just gained. So she throws gosh to the wind and just explodes. Even murder accusations broke Trucy. The complaints when you really look at them are VERY minor from a narrative perspective. I agree they are there but this is my brother’s big favorites and he fought me. It’s more minor than say some issues in most other cases.
@@TheKaijuKing54 haha. It was a LOT of fun to make. It’s legit my 1st video ever. (Even if my brother did the editing.) So the fact I had 10 subs before ANY videos makes me laugh. I wasn’t expecting this to viral. I just freaking love nerding out.
17:28 something random I can add about Klavier is that... I didn't notice he was german before, because when I got into the series I was a freshman in high school and I'm mexican so my English wasn't as fleshed out as today and I played the first four games in spanish (and spanish from spain, but is still enjoyable for latam folks). And for some reason they got rid of Klavier being german, an easy example of this, is his nickname for Apollo, "Herr Forehead" in Spanish he just calls him "Señor Frente", instead of something like Herr Frente, when I played Dual Destinies for the first time (because the last Ace Attorney game to be available in spanish and other languages for that matter was Professor Layton vs Ace Attorney, and I bet all the multi-language investment was made by Level 5, not Capcom) I remembered that detail because of wikias that he was actually german.
Turnabout Academy is hugely damaged for me by the fact that the intro video presents a much more interesting case than what it turns out to be. Means is just a disappointment as an immediately obvious killer when the idea of three friends joining together to cover up a murder committed by one of them is in your mind. Or at least, that's how it was for me. It also frustrated me a bit because Lamiroir was heavily referenced but not discussed, but that was more of a thing that made me see its flaws easier as I was experiencing it than a flaw of the case itself.
I didn't actually realize it was gonna be Means. I assumed it was gonna be Hugh, so I was very disappointed when it started going that direction and pleasantly surprised when he was proved innocent while implicating Means - that was definitely an "oh shit" moment for me.
Very weird to me that you guys see that the killer being obvious as a flaw. I feel like for 90% of Ace Attorney cases the moment they show the killer is the moment you know which one is actually the killer. I've always seen these games as more of a Howdunnit than a Whodunnit.
For those unaware, there’s one twist in Succession that wasn’t discussed, so if you want to hear it…SPOILERS BELOW If you’ve played Succession, this twist isn’t very showy or hidden, it’s actually very obvious, but Thalassa is Lamiroir. Less obvious is that she is Apollo and Trucy’s mother. The pair you’ve been following the whole game are actually step siblings, or siblings, or whatever they are, but they’re nevertheless related. Thalassa was Lamiroir before she lost her memory and became blind (due to being shot), and it’s only when Lamiroir’s eye surgery is conducted that she regains her memories and remembers her past life as the daughter of Magnifi Gramarye. I found it a simple thing to point out (Thalassa and Lamiroir being one and the same), but also gut wrenching knowing that Apollo and Trucy were so close to their own mother at one point and never knew it was her.
I love that, in the Ace Attorney anime, Von Karma actually lets baby Edgeworth keep a dog. It’s oddly sweet.
Better than Jojo
I guess it's the least he can do after murdering his real dad lol rip
Abusers often give good things among all else...
And then tries to send him to an orphanage until he realizes he can use him
@@PrismOpal64 lmfao skill issue tbh
No knowing that Ace Attorney was a series with a set order, I started out with Apollo Justice, since it was the freshest game at the time, and I thought that the new protagonist wouldn't be too much of a problem even if I hadn't played the trilogy before. 4-1 was thus my first case ever. The bar was set so high from the start by my own experience, and I still think 4-1 is my favourite case in the entire series for just how bold of an introduction it was to me.
Ikr? Apollo Justice's first case was such a bold move that was very well executed
@@train3124 Got fucking rocked completely
Crime syndicates rarely go untouched in this series.)
Thinking about it now this game does not play with accomplices often.
I’m still disappointed the developers haven’t brought iris back
@@lucrayzor9657 all ace attorney cases result in death sentences even if it's a self defense I believe (or maybe not because you see frank sahwit in a later game)
Same as kristophs locks in apollo Justice
I never really see people talk about 2-2 much before, but it's one of my favorite cases in the trilogy so it's nice to see it that high.
It's probably because it's another Maya gets framed for murder case
yeah, was my favorite part of JFA (yes even more than farewell)
It’s such a good case and I love the sound track for Kurain village
The twist in this game is still one of favorites in the whole series.
i find it just decent conpared to like an 1-4.
That reminds me of what franzy did in 2-2 with the spirit channeling image
1:22:25 this is pretty much the sole reason Dual Destinies has an M rating.
i was considering, CONSIDERING, not watching a longplay of dual destines, but this got me
no, it was because of "do you want a P-E-E-K?"
Plus the bombing stuff. ISIS was still in it's prime around the time of DD's release so a bombing scene probably wasn't going to fly (Dark pun not intended).
DD was M rated? I never knew. 😮
Something about a character being so Cheerful and having experienced the worst trauma of her life is one of the reason Athena is amomg my favourits
But that’s just me.
just wanna say THANK YOU, WE NEED MORE TURNABOUT CORNER APRECIATION. great entertaining videos, subbed
Well it’s not just the panties case. It’s hysterical for the panties moments. But we gotta look at the rest of it. The 2nd trilogy is just as good as the 1st. :)
What are your thoughts on the rest?
Playing case 6 after case 5 of Dual Destinies was one of the biggest tonal shifts I've ever experienced in my gaming career
I don’t see too many people talking about the effort you guys put in your editing, it’s honestly so creative and so well done. Love the content lads
personally 1-5 would be one of the TOP cases of all times if they just cut out the Angel Starr marathon

@@Imperio_Otomano_the_realest I meant personally
It's still a top 3 case for me.
The thing about Apollo Justice is that its overarching theme, story, and atmosphere are all incredible. On their own, the cases aren’t the best in the series, but as a whole package, it’s so good. Beanix is such an amazing character
rise from the ashes is actually one of my favourites, i’m happy to see it so high up. the characters
I really like the phrase “It’s the first time you get to play as Edgeworth because Wright fell through a Burning Bridge into a river and got a cold”
That’s our thinking anyway.
i didn't really expect to see 5-5 as high up as it was, but I think it's cool that you view it so highly
I personally put I2-3 up in the Top 5 because of how it calls back to one of the most important moments of Ace Attorney's world and rights the wrongs of that event, but this was still a great list.
Spoilers ahead
Athena is on the autism spectrum.
So they seem to imply that when she was younger athenas friend were
mostly the robots and she didn't see a difference between them and the humans that worked on them.
I'm playing reclaimed now, I'm imagining how funny it would be if Pearl was an emo teenager in this one rather than acting the same as she did.
Its nice seeing 4-4 and 5-5 get the love they deserve
Same with 2-2 and 3-3 to me
But not 1-1

I'll admit the case is pretty great overall, but man, do I still hate the Phantom so much. He's such a ridiculous contrivance and excuse for the writers to basically not write a character at all. No backstory, no motive, no name, no face. If that isn't a disappointing main villain idk what is.
I agree with Turnabout for Tomorrow. That episode was a living HELL.
Same, funny how it comes right after my least favorite case in the series, though
have you considered playing TGAA/TGAA2?
Considering you hadn’t played DGS or DGS2 when you recorded this, it’s funny for me to listen to your thoughts since you say statements like “This is the only time X ever happens” or “This is the longest tutorial case.”
Having played both DGS games, I’m just sitting here like, “Oh, you innocent souls.
(Which yes I intend to.)
As for Mason System, we said game mechanics usually didn’t make or break.
It’s one that caused me to Game Over since the game did not hold your hand whatsoever, but it’s also one where once I saw the answer, I was like, “Damn, that was a seemingly minor detail that actually makes complete sense when I look back.”
That was the first time in which I encountered a contradiction that was genuinely tough in the sense that the game gives you the _bare_ minimum of hints, but you still have to figure out the entire scenario yourself without the game pointing at any specific detail.
On the other hand, I still have negative feelings over JfA’s stupid mechanic of carrying over the penalty bar between court and the Magatama since it makes no sense.
yeah
SPOILERS AHOY
The Great Ace Attorney ticks some of the twist boxes the series hadn't managed yet, including having you get a guilty man acquitted, having a judge be the culprit in a case, having the assistant character fill in as defense attorney in a case, having the villain of the whole game running the damn trial, having the coroner be the killer (that one was particularly bold), having a killer in one case be the victim in another, having the main detective character become a victim, having a victim turn out to not be dead after all, having a previous victim turn out to be one of the culprits, and the victim in THAT case also turn out to be a culprit who was trying to kill the defendant, and so on. not to mention the nonsense they pull with the jury. hell, arguably one of the jurors was the culprit in a case! though, not intentionally. still. they were like "what have we not done yet???" and dumped it all in those games.

@@justyouraveragecorgi TGAA2's third case is my favorite in the game, I think.
Ignoring that however:
> Simon being Dane Gustavia'e son is unexpected?
@@Absolute_Zero7 agreed,most overrated case
Im so happy Dual Destinies got the love it deserved here! It might be one of if not my favourite games in the series, and I feel like it's slept on
It really is and it’s the only ace attorney game besides the first one that I have actually finished
I have never felt more hopeless and unsure of how to progress when Athena’s black psyche locks popped up.
I’m not the biggest fan of Dual Destinies but that case doesn’t deserve near enough credit for the insane story it told
One funny detail about Bridge, if you present Bikini's character profile to Larry he reveals she's his mother.
That's not actually the case. While he does indeed say that, if you present her profile again the next day he actually says she's _like_ his mother
You left a comment on lucahjins recent video so i decided to check it out, great lists! I agree with a lot of these
I love Lucahjin’s videos and Tim’s on this series. Tim’s T&T play through of 3-5 actually helped me find a bunch of details I didn’t notice. I wish I could get Tim to see this but I think I’ll have to wait til he plays the Great Ace Attorney before I get his attention.
@@Kaempfdog not sure but I think the AA subreddit is significantly active if you wanna post it there
It's interesting to see how our perspectives can differ so much regarding some characters!
Where would you put stuff?
@@Kaempfdog wait, what? Did he seriously read those after his disbarment?? Now that's a funny detail if I've ever seen one.
This is the quintessential dual destinies experience. A slow start does NOT mean the rest of the game isn’t fantastic!
What we find interesting is how early SHE was whipped into perfection obsessed and how much carried over into adulthood without dropping anything.

The word turnabout: I’m tired boss
I am so happy that you guys have 4-1 as 5, It’s personally my favorite case of all times, I’m also happy that you got turnabout corner and succesion in the second half of the list, AJ is serverely overhatted and really underatted, It’s my favorite AA game by far
Both of us consider AJ our 2nd favorite if I recall. So it was one of the few that escaped a lot of balancing opinions.
AJ appreciation, chad taste

(Also, YES, 4-1 and 2-2 appreciation, they 100% deserve those spots!)
I might not be the biggest DD fan, but gOD you're so right with 5-5, that case is so good, and GOD I love the Phantom, they're such an interesting character (I still remember when it clicked for me who the Phantom was, when you get that flashback of Aura saying she lowered the ladder because the detective told her to...like, full body chills, I was stunned).
I actually like how Apollo is a pawn. I like how everyone's in on something except apollo. It makes everything feel crazier

But I love the judge too much to besmirch him.)
i especially have part 4-2 of 3-5 saved and i still play it time to time, and i get goosebumps EVERY SINGLE TIME.

@@harryguidotti3815 I pronounced it that’s our ball my 1st play through. Like the queen took their freedom and they just want their ball back. I’m REALLY bad at the name puns. I only realized last week Mia likely is meant to be a pun for Missing In Action. As active as she is beyond the grave.
@@Kaempfdog sounds awesome love to be a new fan. I enjoy your work.
Thanks to you guys, I practically became a fan of Ace Attorney. GG! :D
Nice to make a fan out of anyone! Play the series if you haven’t! And if you have, what’re your favorite parts?

Unfortunately, I don't have a lot of free time these days to play games, but watching people play the series and do their own voice impressions of the characters just brightens my day every time. :)
Recipe for Turnabout was another one that hooked me into this franchise, so many funny moments
He's exactly what defense attorneys need to strive to be like, detail oriented, kind, smiling even when the tide is against them, etc. overall, Investigations 2 is just really good and has fantastic writing, and is my favorite of all the Ace Attorney games.
case 1-4 was what got me really into the series.
I wasn't the real killer
1:14:55 if not considering the Great Ace Attorney duology because Magnus McGilded exists
Alright, earlier I ranked the bottom half, now time for the Upper half!(HUGE SPOILERS WARNING)
#20- Turnabout Target(AAI2-1)- Alright this case is personally my favorite intro case and easily the 2nd best intro case.
Again A tier from me and a ranking of #18 from me
#18- Turnabout Reminiscence(AAI1-4) I love this case!

Some facts according to the statistics:
Investigations 1 is on average equal in quality to Turnabout Big Top.
Which will take a WHILE.)
I give you my kudos for doing this though!
Thanks for doing this series, it was very entertaining!
“Now it’s time for one of MY favorites!”
* Recipe for Turnabout
You’re insane, talk to me so I can dissect your thinking process
Big fan of ace attorney, and 256pi’s work, I think these videos are amazing. Keep up the amazing work
Why doesn’t this have thousands of views yet?

@@Kaempfdog this is so cool to know. It'll be a matter of months to pool in thousands of views
For those unaware, there’s one twist in Succession that wasn’t discussed, so if you want to hear it…SPOILERS BELOW
If you’ve played Succession, this twist isn’t very showy or hidden, it’s actually very obvious, but Thalassa is Lamiroir.
CAN WE TALK ABOUT HOW GOOD TURNABOUT TARGET IS???? WHY IS A TUTORIAL CASE SO FUCKIN BANGIN’
Thank you for acknowledging this
RIGHT?! Let’s just stick Shelly mutha-fudging De Killer in the FIRST CASE. Freaking LOVED it. The intros without killer reveals are always the best.
