I love when Nick goes IN on a review. You can feel how passionate he is about film and looking for all the meaning. It's so rare that he gives perfect scores. Love hearing his thoughts. 🌸
I went in totally blind, not familiar with the novel, the director, or a fan of Lea in particular. I ended up loving the film and felt it summed up a lot of anxieties I feel about the future of art, culture, and emotion, as someone whose life passion and line of work is currently seeing massive developments in AI technology. I think this film is extremely valuable for people who view art, mythology, and the stories we tell ourselves as intrinsic to identity and human experience, and has worries about where things may be heading and how coherent our inner and outer worlds will stay as things continue down the path we’re on. It’s a particularly terrifying watch with that in mind.
Riiight I was cacklingggg. But I tend to have the same tastes and sensibilities as Nick so I feel I will love it. Especially because he was drawn to the subtle symbolism and relatability. That's my thing
I just finished this and immediately came to see if you guys had seen it yet. I loved every moment of it, but the ending destroyed me. I’ve never quite seen anything like it. An absolute masterpiece.
I went to see this yesterday afternoon. We went in completely blind but wow really hit a nerve I’ve been thinking about it so much ever since. So many different connotations and metaphors in the story it really is open to interpretations. I would agree that the cinematography style isn’t particularly to my taste and feel it could have worked well on a bigger scale, however I appreciate the decision and think it does work too. Definitely worth seeing and super glad we gave it a chance!
I was shocked how this film could create a tragic fate much worse that death. Giving a metaphor of what are the consequences of human ambition in the search of perfection and to avoid struggle. The shock in Gabrielle is really hearthbreaking
I agree with Nick. I enjoyed this movie, even though I had no prior familiarity with the work it was based upon. The 2044 design made sense. It was a metaphor for the sterilization of emotions in that time period.
FYI. Do what the film tells you to in the end credits. Scan that QR code. It leads to a short scene. Also the director and his wife wrote the score for the film. Polymath.
I was looking for a vídeo giving an opinión about the screaming end and wasnt dissapointed and even all the little details you mention: rudyard, the deaths, the AI emotionless reference through the years, great review
i’m so glad you mentioned at the beginning that you had referenced this movie in a different review you did, because when I saw the thumbnail with the title, I felt like I recognized it. So I checked my letterboxd watchlist and saw that this movie was already added. & the only place I get movie reviews is from you guys so I knew it had to be from you, especially since this isn't a mainstream American blockbuster … so glad I’m not crazy! Really excited to see this even though I’ll probably land more in line with Joseph’s opinion - seeing Nicks excitement makes it something to look forward. I know it’ll be a viewing experience for sure.
After just finishing the movie, I am very split on it. Both you guys make great points and Nick brought up some things that I didn’t think about when watching it. I’m leaning more towards Joseph’s rating but I think this is one of those films that I will probably change my mind on multiple times
Did anyone notice there were three types of doll for each period? Anyways, I loved this film. It's so poetic. I want to watch it again to see the threads I missed.
I just watched the movie and I have a few questions. Nick why did you characterize their love unrequited? Weren’t they both into each other in 1910? Plus in the 2014 segment there wasn’t really any love affair going on between them. Regardless of whether their love was unrequited or not, what was the risk taken or not in their case? I was left confused.
Fantastc review and conversation, can you review more stretching movies like this and less US pulp please? I went yesterday and side with Team Joseph on this one, having to fight nodding off in the dark at some moments.
The only other film by the director I’m familiar with is Nocturama, and still prefer that to this, but I do appreciate the pace here keeps the 140-minute runtime feeling brisk. Just didn’t care for the confusion as to the time-jump narrative; AI taking over for humanity is far more believable than “past lives,” and especially the idea of meeting the same person again in new ones.
Wonderful film with two great watchable leads...Lèa and Georgè... plus George is so chilling in the 2014 sequences, he could explore his own film... Terrifying. What we are seeing on the news today... As with so many releases today, it could have lost 20 minutes or so... still, I really enjoyed it. I must also say Lèa has never looked so captivating... A pleasant surprise on a Saturday Afternoon.. Something to think about. Has time and disconnected technology caused us to lose some of our passion for life and emotion? It so... It is a great loss.. Not only in love but life itself....
I've been waiting for this review. 😂 Bonello is a provocateur and this film is a bold, original, fascinating and frustrating watch but I'm so glad that i watched it. Léa is exceptional in it.
saw this at the London Film Festival and George MacKay did a Q&A afterwards - interestingly he learnt French for the film. looking forward to seeing it again as I think I i missed quite a few things the first time around
I felt like everything is flat about the characters and visuals in all timelines, because its all AI halucinated, its all AI trying to retrieve humanity, with world wide web info, AI telling a love story, full of glitches, trying to piece together what a dove has to do with the holy spirit, or a internet virgins quest for love. Like AI is trying to make sense of human feelings.
This movie was so weird for me. It has everything I love about film, yet I found it utterly boring. If the acting wasn’t so amazing, I wouldn’t have made it to the end. I imagine a second watch might be more fruitful, but is it worth the risk?
Some of George Mackay's dialogue in the 2014 section sounded as if it was directly translated from a foreign language (which may well have been true) - it sounded stilted and not like words someone would actually say. I didn't connect with this movie. I appreciate that it was trying to say something meaningful about human nature but I don't think it did it very well.
Thanks guys. And i ❤ that you both are keeping it reel & even with the eye rolling 😂, still respect each other opinions. Now that is a true❤story, that no Ai can touch.😊 Nick your take on the movie makes me want to see it, merci. Have a nice day🙋🏿♀️
After this review I am most definitely going to watch this film. Usually I agree with Joseph when you guys disagree about a movie. This time around I have a hunch that I might side with Nick. But I will see. Nick displays so much passion about this film and I LOVE IT!!!
I totally agree with Joseph's 2.5 rating. You can't lament the loss of emotion when the characters never showed much passion in the first place. The longer the film went on (and it goes on for 2.5 hours), the more vapid it seemed.
Oh my god. The feelings this movie has me in! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Can’t wait to see it again. Thanks for the poem confirmation! I noticed it was Rudyard Kipling but couldn’t see which one.
See, when I think of a movie called The Beast, I think of the 1975 Walerian Borowczyk movie that has some wild sequences with what looks like an anthropomorphic Tasmanian Devil that... I'm not sure if I can say without getting in trouble. Just check the movie out for yourselves if you get the chance!
My ex girlfriend looks like Lea Seydoux Which gives me confusing emotions whenever I see her in a movie. I might need whatever they have to remove my emotions
Both of you are emotionally divided over this - guess that answers the question if humans should 'erase' the emotions that makes people whole - for better or worse! 🤨Even your wide ratings here show the movie has achieved it's aim - having emotions win🥲☺
I to am afraid to pursue my true passion, Because I feel that the moment my dreams so true. The world will end. Which makes no sense. But I can't help this feeling. Which is holding me hostage forever.
This film sounds like stages of depression. Depressive, major depression, dysthymia. Also, when there's nothing shiny to feed my soul for 2hrs straight... not interested.
I had to pause at 3 minutes, my friend and I were talking to someone after the movie ended. He literally said he was doing homework. He's a film major. I thought it was a good movie, great ending
This movie was just completely dull. I gave it an hour, that was all I could stand. It's the first time in years that I have walked out of the theater, but I'm not a fan of movies with subtitles.
The epic amounts of side eye and eye rolling in this video 😂
Nick’s heart shattered into a million pieces when Joseph said 2.5 😂
It did. I saw it.
I love when Nick goes IN on a review. You can feel how passionate he is about film and looking for all the meaning. It's so rare that he gives perfect scores. Love hearing his thoughts. 🌸

Love it when they disagree like this. Can’t wait to watch this movie so I can pick a side 😂😂

1:53 Joseph trying to hold back from laughing 🤭 😂
Hahahaha
I just finished this and immediately came to see if you guys had seen it yet. I loved every moment of it, but the ending destroyed me. I’ve never quite seen anything like it. An absolute masterpiece.
Just watched last night, this film feels like an episode of Black Mirror, written and directed by David Lynch.
Joseph is so patient while Nick invests his heart into his review. Honestly though, I can close my eyes and feel Joseph rolling his.
I went to see this yesterday afternoon. We went in completely blind but wow really hit a nerve I’ve been thinking about it so much ever since. So many different connotations and metaphors in the story it really is open to interpretations.

The shock in Gabrielle is really hearthbreaking
I have to say I fuckin loved the movie and that's without fully understanding what the story was going on. The experience alone was just incredible
I agree with Nick. I enjoyed this movie, even though I had no prior familiarity with the work it was based upon. The 2044 design made sense. It was a metaphor for the sterilization of emotions in that time period.
Go on Nick with your fancy vest!! ❤️
FYI. Do what the film tells you to in the end credits. Scan that QR code. It leads to a short scene.

love this lads. great to see ye disagreeing respectfully. And ye helped me understand the film a bit better before I typed up my own review.
I was looking for a vídeo giving an opinión about the screaming end and wasnt dissapointed and even all the little details you mention: rudyard, the deaths, the AI emotionless reference through the years, great review
Love the T-shirt lol
Great video!🎉
I LOVE the thumbnai. Such a vibe 😎😘

Thank you so much for explaining this !! I’ve never been so confused while watching a movie 🤧🥹 I fully understand this movie now !! Thank you
😭😮 NICKS FACE WHEN JOSEPH GAVE HIS SCORE. OOOOOOOOOOO LAAAAWD ! 😭😭😭😩😩❤️💯
After just finishing the movie, I am very split on it. Both you guys make great points and Nick brought up some things that I didn’t think about when watching it. I’m leaning more towards Joseph’s rating but I think this is one of those films that I will probably change my mind on multiple times

Agreed. Totally brilliant.
I love absolutely every time when Nick breaks out the fire..❤
very helpful review, thanks
This was great, thank you.

Really enjoy when u guys have different takes
I'm in complete agreement with Nick on this one.
I’ve seen it three times now! I think it’s a masterpiece, personally, but can definitely see people not liking this.
“Yeah, it was such a pleasure.” 😂😂😂
This movie looks fascinating. I will have to watch it alone, but I usually watch movies alone. I prefer it.
I've been waiting for this. Both Léa and George are having a fantastic year. Thank you.
Edit: the premise reminds me of The Fountain with Hugh Jackman
Fantastc review and conversation, can you review more stretching movies like this and less US pulp please? I went yesterday and side with Team Joseph on this one, having to fight nodding off in the dark at some moments.
2014 Louis is supposed to be Elliott Rodgers. The events even take place in May 2014 like his shootings/stabbings.
this movie was amazing!!! super exciting to watch
I'm really interested in seeing this film though

I loved the movie. Highly relatable.
Love Joseph’s T-shirt ❤. The light-up vest is great too ❤❤❤
I've been waiting for this review. 😂 Bonello is a provocateur and this film is a bold, original, fascinating and frustrating watch but I'm so glad that i watched it. Léa is exceptional in it.
no because I am Nick and my boyfriend is Joseph 😂 you guys are the best
Loved this movie!
Uncle Nick got that SHIT ON 🔥💅🏾
saw this at the London Film Festival and George MacKay did a Q&A afterwards - interestingly he learnt French for the film. looking forward to seeing it again as I think I i missed quite a few things the first time around
Welcome back, Siskel and Ebert😂
The film left me overwhelmed. I'm with Nick here
I felt like everything is flat about the characters and visuals in all timelines, because its all AI halucinated, its all AI trying to retrieve humanity, with world wide web info, AI telling a love story, full of glitches, trying to piece together what a dove has to do with the holy spirit, or a internet virgins quest for love. Oh very different options love this ❤❤❤😅😊
Oh the side eye though 😂😂😂😂😂😂
This movie was so weird for me. It has everything I love about film, yet I found it utterly boring. If the acting wasn’t so amazing, I wouldn’t have made it to the end. I imagine a second watch might be more fruitful, but is it worth the risk?
you are absolutely right. I went in not knowing anything and I hated it. I didn't even know what I was watching. I almost walked out
Same 🤣
Whoa. 5 out of 5. Debating whether to watch this tonight.
This film is brilliant
I wanted to like this film and I did until the very end. It was uneven and layered but a slipshod ending sunk it.
Wow! A perfect score from Nick. Now I’ve got to see it.
Thanks guys. And i ❤ that you both are keeping it reel & even with the eye rolling 😂, still respect each other opinions. Now that is a true❤story, that no Ai can touch.😊
Nick your take on the movie makes me want to see it, merci.

After this review I am most definitely going to watch this film. Usually I agree with Joseph when you guys disagree about a movie. This time around I have a hunch that I might side with Nick. But I will see. Nick displays so much passion about this film and I LOVE IT!!!
Joseph's facial expressions were absolutely hilarious.
So amazingly, fascinating film. Spot on Nick!
I couldn't help delighting at the furry light up vest. The movie is intriguing to me. The differing opinions make it more so. Love Léa Seydoux.
I feel like after they filmed this they continued to disagree about this for the next 6 hours
nick cosplaying as Gayvin the Hunter was a nice change of pace. lol all jokes aside, I like the boa. (is it a boa? idk it looks like one to me.💀)
Maybe a vest? But how cool- it even lights up w/multi colored lights!
It's a vest.
I feel like this is how my sister and i argue over films. Although.... I defend movies like hellraiser, while she loves 50 shades and twilight
So at least you both have taste is what I'm saying haha
I totally agree with Joseph's 2.5 rating. You can't lament the loss of emotion when the characters never showed much passion in the first place. The longer the film went on (and it goes on for 2.5 hours), the more vapid it seemed.
Oh my god. The feelings this movie has me in! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Can’t wait to see it again. Thanks for the poem confirmation! I noticed it was Rudyard Kipling but couldn’t see which one.
I think this is only the second time I've seen you guys disagree!!! And the other time it was a smaller margin!
Nick I love that vest on you!
Is this the most divided you two have been on a film?
See, when I think of a movie called The Beast, I think of the 1975 Walerian Borowczyk movie that has some wild sequences with what looks like an anthropomorphic Tasmanian Devil that... I'm not sure if I can say without getting in trouble. Just check the movie out for yourselves if you get the chance!

I to am afraid to pursue my true passion, Because I feel that the moment my dreams so true. The world will end. Which makes no sense. But I can't help this feeling. Which is holding me hostage forever.
Well…if the world ends, none of this will matter, so you should go for it!
Sounds psychotic...
DONTT DIVORCE OVER A FILM, GUYS I kid (still, work it out. It's disconcerting to think of you not together...)
This film sounds like stages of depression. Depressive, major depression, dysthymia. Also, when there's nothing shiny to feed my soul for 2hrs straight... not interested.
I’m going to watch this just for Dasha
I had to pause at 3 minutes, my friend and I were talking to someone after the movie ended. He literally said he was doing homework. He's a film major.
I thought it was a good movie, great ending
civil war😅
This movie was just completely dull. I gave it an hour, that was all I could stand. It's the first time in years that I have walked out of the theater, but I'm not a fan of movies with subtitles.
I'm not sure NIck was in vibe with this movie.......
Chiiiiiiile the subtext of this review 😅
I’m Team Joseph all the way. If you want to see George Mackay, see Femme.
