This was an awesome tutorial! I watched it once, went to Lowe’s and got my two replacement plugs, then played it and did I work along pausing it after each step. THIS WAS SO WELL DONE! Thank you again! I subscribed and followed- I have an old wicker floor lamp that need a new cord, socket for the bulb and plug. I will watch for other videos.
That’s fantastic Leslie! I appreciate the kind words and I really enjoy knowing that I helped someone fix something they maybe thought they couldn’t. We can all do it if we take the time to learn! So happy for you and thanks for subscribing! It means more than you know :) as for your old wicker floor lamp, I wish you the best of luck with that. You’re the second person recently who needs to change the entire lamp cord. Check out the other comments I have and you may find an answer there. I do plan on making another video on replacing a lamp cord and socket. Both jobs are very simple and I know you can do this :) Have a great day and I’ll tag you when I get that other video completed.
You literally just saved me a couple Hundred bucks. My pup chewed the cord to my tv last night… NOT an hdmi, cord that goes directly into the tv so I am so so so thankful for you making this!!!!! Awesome job
Very good explanation. My vacuum cleaner core also has white string with the white and black wrapped copper wires (inside the rubber cord) I just wrapped it all in the plug end piece
Hey Kim! Thanks for coming by and watching the video. And yup that’ll work. That white string is used sometimes to help split the cable sheath. It won’t hurt anything! Thanks again and I really appreciate the support!
Thank you for this video!!! I swear as a single Mom of two boys and two dogs I was about to loose my mind with all the courd chompping the new puppy does. Now my boys and I know how to fix cords and be more mindful of what the puppy is chewing on!

To everyone struggling with their dogs chewing on things hers a few things to keep in mind. 1. Dogs chew on thing as part of stimuli they aren't trying to be bad and chew toys can help keep them from chewing on things. 2. They often don't know better. 3. Vinegar is a safe way to deter chewing. Spray it on items you don't want your dog to chew. 4. Provide plenty of exercise. A tired dog is less likely to get into trouble. 5. Be patient especially with puppies, rescue dogs who aren't used to a home environment, and breeds that tend to be mouthy. I am here because my apartment has a roach problem and the nasty critters ate my fridge wires. I'm trying to get rid of them. If you have the same problem as me try using lemon scented cleaners. So far I haven't seen one after I started using lemon cleaners.
Thank you so much Edward! I’m so glad I could help! Have fun repairing your cord. I have a part 2 that goes into a different style cord (vacuums) if interested in the future! Appreciate you!
thank you so much for explaining this in detail. my 8month puppy chewed my new vacume cleaner cord in half. he did it in the middle of my very long cord. unfortunately. so i didnt replace the plug. i used duct tape to connect the white wires together and the black wires together.
Nice! I was gonna say, put some electrical tape on there! Lol. Good job though and super happy you repaired your vacuum! It’s a great feeling fixing something! Super appreciate you my friend :)
Good morning Susan! I’m so glad you liked it and it helped you. I recently did a part 2 which may come in handy for you some day where I go into a little more depth on vacuum cords. That stinks about the pee (been there) but love the fact that this video helped you repair your expensive cleaner! I knew you could do it! Thanks Veronica! I really appreciate the comment and support 💪😎👍
Thank you Karen! And yes, as a puppy he lived chewing on everything. Fast forward to today and he’s finally done being a chew monster! Appreciate you coming by :)
First and foremost, I commend you on this video. Extreme attention to detail, and simply explained for any novice... Bravo! I'm a novice DIY electrician who has spliced a few electrical cords, however... my pup chewed 3/4 through the white fan cord pretty much exactly where yours is shown so close to the 2 prong plug that I have to replace it. My mistake was I didn't mark which wire was which when I cut both, and there's no distinguishing raised edge on either casing as you indicate; they're both similarly "textured"; any suggestions on any other way to tell which is neutral and which is hot? Many thanks in advance... CHEERS!
Dave! Thank you so much for the comment and I’m here to try and help. First off, does your plug end have 2 prongs that are the same size and shape, if so, it won’t matter which one you deem hot or neutral. It will work the same. As for the contrary, if your plug prongs have one that is smaller and one larger I’d do this. I’d take a change and just hook it up to either wire if you can’t distinguish which wire is hot or neutral. You basically have a 50/50 shot. From what I know and have been told (and I could be wrong) the plug with the larger size and smaller size is a safety feature for the appliance. I can pretty much guarantee that it’ll work when you plug it in. Will it be safer? That’s subjective in my opinion. So if I were you, I’d just go for it, repair it and plug it in. If it works, I’d let it be, if it doesn’t, then I’d reverse the wires and see if that make it works. Knowing AC theory, AC oscillates so technically it shouldn’t matter. Also, I am by all means not liable for anything that “could” happen in your repair, having said that, I’m pretty sure you’ll be ok and you can fix the problem. I in the past, fixed plug ends and didn’t care if I was replacing a 2 prong plug with the different sized prongs with a plug with 2 prongs being the same size. It always worked. Let me know if I’m on the right track and helped steer you in the right direction. Just seeing you say that you cant tell the difference in the two wires, makes me believe you have nothing to worry about in your repair :)
I live in Australia and can't find that plug anywhere the people in the hardware stores said they've never heard of it I'm going back tomorrow to show them this video!!
Hey Jasmine! Thanks for watching this and I hope I can help you solve your electrical mystery. Now I’m not too familiar with Australian electrical plugs, so there might be something different. Let me know what you find :) thanks again
Thank you. Great information. But my dog chewed the wire off my iron that I quilt with. I believe there is enough to tie them together. I think I can do it. I believe I would wrap each to the correct wire individually and cover well, and leave no part of the wire naked, then wrap both together. Of course, using electrical tape. Correct? Second thought. It was bitten off about 6 inches from the end. Should I replace the plug instead? It was new iron
Good morning Norma and thank you so much for coming by and asking your questions. You’re support for my channel is amazing and I appreciate it so much :) As to your first question, you could absolutely repair the chewed section and splice them together. Electrical tape with some splices will work well with how you want to fix it. Splices will give you a strong electrical connection and the tape will help secure it so it can be handled safely. However I think your second suggestion in repairing the plug is probably the better route. It’s the safest too. But you can do what ever you feel most comfortable doing. You seem to already have a pretty good grasp on the fix so I’m confident you’re going to crush the repair. Don’t be afraid to ask any other questions and I hope the repair goes well for you.
I want to thank you for your explanation of the hot and neutral. Our puppy chewed my boot dryer cord off. No black or white colors on that cord. I wracking my brain trying to differentiate between the two. Much appreciated 🙏.
I have black and white wire and the plug prongs are in the same shape and size. My dogs chewed my tv chord and I look for a replacement plug but it doesnt have indication for neutral, hot, positive, or negative wire. For example it doesnt have differeng color of screws inside so i dont know which where prongs supports the neutral(white) and black pls help. Thank you😊
Hey there! Thanks for the question. From what it sounds like, the wires (black and white) can go on either of the 2 prongs. As long as the 2 prongs are the same size (one not being bigger or smaller) you should be good to go! Now if your original tv plug had a big size prong and a smaller size prong, you’d want to have the white go to the big prong and the black to the smaller prong. I think that’s it! Thanks again and good luck!
@@StoneyCreekSparkchaser Just curious...I watched a few videos and have not seen this addressed. But is the cable used good for say a 40w bulb up to say 250w? Or do you need special cables/parts for different wattage?
Most definitely DoodahGurl. The cable in that video and most appliances are 14 AWG (size) and those can handle 20 amps easy but are usually used in 15 amp circuits. To answer your question about the 250 watt bulb, yes it will. After doing some calculations with 120 volts AC (that being your normal house power) you would only pull around 2 amps, so yea. No problems at all. I like to remember this and it could help you as well. Those space heaters we use from time to time in our houses use approximately 1500 watts (so 12.5 amps) and they also use the same 14 AWG wire. So if that can handle it, then yes, a 250 watt light bulb is no match! Hope this answered your question and I really appreciate the comment. If you need anything else, just reach out. Also thank you for subscribing to my channel! Really appreciate that!
@@StoneyCreekSparkchaser Thank you so much for the detailed response. Some of it was a bit Greek to me as I'm female and things like that are over my head, but I got the gist of it as you kept explaining. Appreciate you taking the time to respond. Stay awesome!
Hey Alexandra. Thanks for commenting. If you don’t know what the plug was, you can tell be the wiring. In this video I showed “ribbed vs Smooth” wiring. That will tell you want plug to use. May I suggest you check out my part 2 video? That goes more in depth with wiring where you can’t tell from the outside which one is which. Let me know if that helps and if it doesn’t, let me know and I’ll try and help you more. You can also email me with pictures if you want at stoneycreeksparkchaser@yahoo.com and I can further try there. Either way… I’ll help you get back on track. Thanks again.
Oh no! I’ve had my share of experiences as well. Luckily I fixed every one! I hope you can too :) I know you can! Thanks for checking it out and I hope you have a great rest of your weekend 😎
Hey Nanno. There might be. It all depends what current (amperage) your tv draws when in use. Does the new plug look like the old plug? I ask that because I think you may of got the wrong one. You need to get yourself a 125V 15A plug with the correct prong sizing (either one big prong and one small prong or both prongs the same size). That just depends what was on you tv before and then go from there. I hope this helps and let me know if you have any other questions. Good luck.
@@StoneyCreekSparkchaser my dog completely chewed it off and I misplaced it, the cord doesn’t have a smooth/texture side so I removed the protective rubber a bit to locate the copper and it split in two with a white side with copper and and a black side with copper.
Ok I understand. To play it safe I’d hook up the black wire to the bronze and the white to the silver screw. That’s how they would hook up if it was a “polarized” plug versus “non-polarized.” Please let me know if this worked and fixed your problem.
@@StoneyCreekSparkchaser ok I will have to make my run to the hardware store get it done and I will update you ASAP! Thank you for this video! It is gladly appreciated and I won’t have to throw out my air filter! Your the real MVP!
Hey Rob! Thanks for the comment, as for being screwed... that depends. If there is no wires left to connect, you'll have to open the appliance up and see where they are landed inside. It may take time getting in to where that is, but it could be worth it. Now if you can't, then yes, definitely screwed. Sorry my man, but I hope this helps.
Oh it helps, thanks for the reply.... yea it's a flat panel TV... i took the screws off but the panel doesn't come, it's all one piece.... next step is the Dremel tool and see if I can access it or not,
Yea sorry Rob, hopefully it's easy to get too. One thing you have going for you, is regardless, if you can't fix it the tv is screwed. So you have nothing to lose, but I hope you fix it :)
My puppy chewed up my brand new shark vacuum cord, it isn’t split into two from the outside of the cord like the one in your video, how do I know which one goes where?
Hey Kimbo! Thanks for the comment. Two quick questions. Does the plug have 2 skinny prongs? And the second question, if you strip back some of the wiring, are there different colors, like white or black, even stripes or writing? If you can answer those, I should be able to point you in the right direction 😎
Hey Kimberly! Thank you for the comment and support. I’m going to give you 2 answers. The right and preferred way would be to replace your plug with a similar style plug that was on the fan. This trying to find one that has fuses (and the correct rated fuses as well). Now for me personally, I would replace my fan plug if it had fuses with a regular plug (like what’s in the video). That’s just me though and I would feel comfortable doing that. So the best answer for you would be to do what you feel most comfortable doing and what you feel would be the safest. I hope this helps Kimberly. Thanks again.
My pleasure Nadira! I’m so happy that I could help you! Good luck on your repair and don’t hesitate to contact me in the future if you have any questions 😎

Morning Grace! Yes you can. I just did a quick search on Home Depot and they sell an 8 ft “lamp cord” for around 9 dollars. This cord comes with a plug already in place and the other end is already stripped for you to apply. So depending on how hard your lamp base is to remove and separate will dictate how hard the wire is to replace. You just need to get inside of it somehow to expose the wires. It should be fairly easy though once the base is off. The wires could just be screwed onto terminals or they are just wire nutted together. Either way, the fix should only take a couple minutes. I hope this helps Grace and good luck! Let me know if you need anything else.
@@StoneyCreekSparkchaser Thank you so much! You are so informative and make things easy to understand. I appreciate your help!! I'll let you know how it goes 😊
Appreciate that Grace and I know you got this :) Oh and one more thing, make sure you don’t forget to note where the new wires land according to how the old ones were hooked up. Smooth vs ribbed.

@@StoneyCreekSparkchaser Thank you so much for the detailed response. Some of it was a bit Greek to me as I'm female and things like that are over my head, but I got the gist of it as you kept explaining. Appreciate you taking the time to respond. Stay awesome!
@@doodahgurlie No problem and happy to help. Have a great day!
what do you do if you do not know what the plug was? what are these callled? How does one know if they need polarize or not? thanks
Thanks again.
yeah my 2 yr old shepherd ate 5 plugs in one night one is my new $80 fan. and one the rumba.
Oh no! I’ve had my share of experiences as well. Luckily I fixed every one! I hope you can too :) I know you can! Thanks for checking it out and I hope you have a great rest of your weekend 😎
This just saved me $200 !
Oh heck yea! 💪
Great job! Thank you!
Glad I could help :)
The previous plug of tv (original 2 prong plug) indicated 7A 125V and I replaced it with 3A and 250V is there gonna be a problem?
Good luck.
@@StoneyCreekSparkchaser thank you so much

If I have a black and white cord, which do I connect to silver and which to bronze?
Great question! Does your plug end on the original plug have 2 similar ends or is one bigger then the other like I described in my video?
Appreciate that! I just like to help where I can. Good luck!
What if it's chewed off right at the appliance... literally no ends to splice too... am i screwed?
Hey Kimbo! I posted a new video which I think will answer your question! Please check my electrical playlist and find my Part 2 video! Thanks
Can I replace the plug on my fan with one of these if it says it has a fuse?
Hey Kimberly! Thank you for the comment and support. I’m going to give you 2 answers. The right and preferred way would be to replace your plug with a similar style plug that was on the fan. This trying to find one that has fuses (and the correct rated fuses as well). Now for me personally, I would replace my fan plug if it had fuses with a regular plug (like what’s in the video). That’s just me though and I would feel comfortable doing that. So the best answer for you would be to do what you feel most comfortable doing and what you feel would be the safest. I hope this helps Kimberly. Thanks again.

Can I replace the whole thing 😢if I don’t want to lose the cord
You most certainly can Jane! Are you asking about the whole cord? If so, I’m not sure they sell a replacement that long, unless you use an extension cord. Thanks for the comment and support :)
Oo
So my dog chewed my tv cord off and im trying to replace it but idk which one is pistive and negative for me
To attach it to the prongs.
Hi Sacherine. Can you tell me if the prongs on the original cord were both the same size or different?
Show a super close up of how to get it into or on the screw! I am having the hardest time….
Hey Surf, my apologies for the close up not working well. Here is a shirt I did as well that might help you see it better. Again, I sincerely apologize for not reaching the bar on that portion. Enjoy my friend and thank you for the comment and support :)

Owns a bad dog. Moving on
He’s a good boy!
I found a lamp that most of the cord has been lightly chewed to the base. Is there a way to replace the whole cord?
My dog needs to prance her way to your house to thank you for saving her from a spanking I’m going to try .. she bit off a 200 dollar vacuum cord… she’s 6 years old and knows better !
Flourishing Faith! I hear you 1000%! My dogs prances everyday for not spanking his butt as well. He’s only bitten through 4 appliances and I was able to save them all. Nothings been chewed through for quite some time, so hopefully he’s done! Good luck with your repair and don’t be afraid to reach out with any questions. Always here to help! Thanks again and have a great night 😎
@@StoneyCreekSparkchaser I do have a question my vacuum cord does not have the 2 lines on them what do I do?
Hey Faith thanks for reaching out. Alright let’s see if we can fix this. Does your plug end have 2 skinny sides? Second question, if you strip back some of the cord, are 2 wires exposed? Maybe even three wires? And are you seeing any colors, like black, white, green? I’ll be waiting at the ready for your response 😎
Flourishing Faith! This ones for you! I just posted a video and I wanted to thank you for inspiration. I cut my vacuum cord just to show you how to fix it. Just check out my Electrical Playlist and look for Part 2! I hope it helps! You're friend... Stoney :)
