    Without trying to be pedantic, the 'Self' here isn't , I think, the 'Self' in its everyday meaning. Self, in Chan terms, isn't a thing, or is a nothing, at least according to Buddha. Here, with Soto tradition's links to Chinese silent illumination school, the 'Self' here is buddha-nature, a kind of luminous mind in all things, or, in Quaker spirituality, a light within, like a moon hiding behind a cloud.
