Her half brother James had his own ambitions. Her other councillors placed family considerations above loyalty to the Crown. Some were in English pay. There is no doubt that Mary made some bad decisions, particularly those after the birth of her son. However, I wonder how Elizabeth would have fared if she had been Queen of Scots? How would Elizabeth have coped with the murder of her favourite so violently right in front of her? Would Elizabeth have been able to ride through the night while 6 months pregnant to escape Rizzio’s murderers? Would she then have been able to put her half brother to flight? Could Elizabeth have escape imprisonment so many times and fought on? Some of Mary’s worst decisions were made when she was most vulnerable and without loyal council, after the birth of her child and following her miscarriage. Once in England Mary had to endure a fake trial for the murder of Darnley. Were the Casket letters forgeries? Even after the show trial she was kept in prison. The thing Elizabeth did handle considerably better was the risk to her crown following the suspicious death of Amy Robsart. I think for the most part the situations of the rival queens cannot be so easily compared. They came into power in completely different circumstances and In completely different environments.
Just saw it, excellent! So much information and detail in a relatively short sitting. There are certain areas in her tragic life that could be expanded on but you articulated all the significant events that brought her to great prominence and unfortunate outcomes that sealed her fate.

If Mary had adopted a little more of Elizabeth's ruthlessness & dealt with the misogynistic men in her life directly, instead of trying to be diplomatic & if Elizabeth could have had more of Mary's open-mindedness (& put aside her own jealousy) to name Mary as her successor, history would have been much different.

She was an ineffective ruler with a weak claim to the English throne. If Elizabeth were a Catholic, would Mary have fought so hard for it? What exactly was her intention? The fact that Elizabeth was declared a bastard, then later reinstated to the succession via Henry VIII's will and by act of Parliament, doesn't change the reality that she was his daughter and the next in line for the throne after Mary Tudor died. Mary Stuart's claim was because her grandmother was Henry VIII's sister, Margaret Tudor. In NO way would that make her claim stronger. Even then, Elizabeth gave her shelter in England after Mary was forced to abdicate her Scottish throne. Obviously, Elizabeth also did this to keep a close eye on her cousin but she gave her a safe place to live in relative peace and comfort. And then Mary involed herself in not one, but THREE plots to assassinate Elizabeth and take her throne. WHERE DID SHE FIND THE AUDACITY? Elizabeth literally had no choice. Was she going to keep funding Mary's existence while this bitch was plotting to murder her? She had to sign the warrant. Even though she didn't want to.
