    I love how Edith is proactive in trying to help him the only way she knows which is keeping busy, the same advice she got when she got jilted. Organising matters the way she is expected to and the way she would help as a wife in the womanly role. Givingn Tom things to do like a nurse and christening etc. She asks after her mother and offers to go see her on behalf of her father and is supportive of Tom mourning showing so much compassion

      Edish was my favourite from "upstairs", from the very begining

    I loved how Carson, who was so against a chauffeur running off with Lord Grantham's daughter, hands Branson a plate instead of letting him pick it up himself. Sort of a solidarity/sympathy between bros moment.

      It's more to do with recognising that he is not staff anymore and it's the proper etiquette to hand the plate to him.

      @@ericalouise2008 It is, and then he helps himself to breakfast. There is never service at breakfast in England, except in hotels.

      There’s also the fact he knows Branson just lost his wife

    Lady Edith is a strong person, unrecognised.

    Difference in how Robert treats a mourning Mary and a mourning Tom. Mary he treats like a china doll and lets her rot in grief for months. But the morning after Sybil died, toms trying to be strong and find a job and Robert instantly jumps on that and is almost keen on Tom leaving. 😟

      To be fair, it took him a while to get used to Tom. He didn't like him back then, but Tom became family to them all

      @harringt100 3 ปีที่แล้ว +28

      I mean, also to be fair Mary was his daughter and no one feels the same way about in-laws as their own children. Even if they like and respect them, which isn't terribly true in this case at this moment.

      @msinvincible2000 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Well yes, Mary was (God knows why) the princess, everyone bent backwards for her, at any time (with the exception of the wonderful Mrs Hughes). Robert didn't care about Edith either when Michael died

    Edith and Mary are far more sensible than their conservative clownesque father.

      Tom was the one thing they could agree on. Despite their differences, they both loved Tom like a brother and saw him as a part of the familiy

      @@msfriendsfan4ever788 Not the only thing, they had many people they both loved and cared for. But yes, they both did value Tom and grew to love him like a brother. And Tom became a very good brother to them. There for both of them, but also able to stand up to them if need be. Sybil would be proud.

      In this moment yes, though Robert doesn't get enough credit. For the time period he was an earl in he was very modern and cared for his staff a great deal, accepted people into the family and has forgiven scandals that other families of equal or even lower standing would not stand for. he has his snob moments, but he is not a bad man. He tries to do right by his own way. He's a product of his time, and despite that a good man.

      The earl is very against the idea od a catholic granddaughter, but his wrong decision during Sybil confinement should teach him that is not for him to decide but for the father.

      It's a stereotype. In actuality the only ones that care are Roman Catholic.

      @@nigelsheppard625 Bollocks.
      This series was started in 1914.
      Violet, the Dowager countess, was born in 1842.
      The Roman Catholic Relief Act, was passed a mere 13 years previously before which Catholics weren't allowed to sit in Parliament (Even if they won the election), and only a year before that applied to ALL government positions.
      And that was just OFFICIAL Prejudice.
      We all know that prejudice lasts for centuries after laws are passed. Women get the vote, there is still sexism. Hell, Americas had a Black President, but you better believe there is racism in America.
      The characters in this show, are characters who's parents and grandparents lived in a world where in some situations, being a Catholic was pretty much a crime.
      England has had huge Anti-Catholic Sentiment for centuries, mostly due to the fact that Anglicanism is intrinsically linked to the Crown. To not be an Anglican in those times is not just irreligious, but disloyal to the crown and to the nation. (As is commented in later episodes).
      Its died down now somewhat, as Anti-Islam has taken over as the default "They aren't one of us, they don't understand our values, their religion compels them to loyal to others rather than to US their nation", position, but its still a thing.
