BEST GEARBOX EVER! - CRF300L, 4K

  • I used to ride a 1993 XR250L that I had geared down to 13/42. I was always looking for another gear when in 6th on the 250L. The 300L is already geared pretty low 1-5 and 6th is an overdrive and plenty fast. Never looking for another gear when in 6th on the 300L and 1-5 is nice and low in stock form. Honda really hit the nail on the head with the gearing on the CRF300L.

    It's good to hear positive comments about our 300's. I watch endless video coverage and find the focus is relentlessly on the suspension complaints and tires. It's amazing how many judge this as huge flaws. There are so many motocross and offroad models out there, the 300 was meant to bridge many riding styles into something comfortable and basic.

      Yes! Exactly. Well said! They put some tires on the bike that will last a long time and work well on the street and even in the dirt. More people would complain if the 300 came with off road knobby tires! I will probably upgrade the suspension at some point because I like to ride it like an MX bike at times. I actually love the stock suspension for most riding. It's super plush/responsive and really nice feeling under normal riding conditions. I will miss that if I make it firmer for jumping.

    Don't you find you're always kind of racing the bike to keep up with traffic from stops and traffic lights?

      Not at all. There is a lot of shifting to get up to speed with the close ratio 6-speed gearbox when taking off from a dead stop, but I don't feel like I have any trouble keeping up with cars by any means. The bike is light and quick compared to a car.
