EXO' Mama is a masterpiece , no group has been able to make a comeback like it, everything in it is great concept, the video, Vocals ... But EXO in their debut was bullied, and ppl called them " SM's failure" , and many were mocking the concept that is now considered the best, plus The company ( SM ) didn't take care about EXO and ignored them a lot , it didn't even promote them, and EXO disappeared after this video for a year, and then they came back with a song Growl on 2013 which smashed numbers and revived the sales market in Korea

In the mandarin the "rap" part is Xiumin and Kris. Kris is the one flying with the fire dragon and very deep voice. Luhan is the pretty face moving the balls (telekinesis) and Tao is the one doing the martial arts, his power is time control so he stops time and the petals freeze on air and he trains his sword skills.
You got Lay, Xiumin and Chen correct.
In both mv you can see the members connecting with their counterpart.

EXO had two pre-debut songs called "What is Love" and "History". Those songs were well received by Korean fans but were taken aback with the official debut song "MAMA". Fans expected more of the R&B style because of "What is Love". MAMA was clearly ahead of it's time. Now the fans love this song. Their first music show win was with their song "Wolf". EXO got popular in 2013 (a year after their debut) with their song "Growl" which is considered as Korea's national anthem. Kai was the only one doing the screaming in the EXO-K version while Xiumin and Kris shared the part in the EXO-M version. The dance break in both music videos consist of the best dancers in both EXO-K and EXO-M. Those dancers are Kai, Lay, Luhan, Xiumin, Sehun, and Tao (the one who usually does flips).
I'm so glad that you decided to dive deeper into EXO's music. To be completely honest, I am with you since your first EXO reaction. When I saw you at the beginning I was afraid that you will be prejudiced against these good looking, dancing young Asians, but at the end I was the person with prejudices against you. :(

I thought it was Kai too way back when I first got into EXO and watched this MV but when I started watching their live performances, I saw that Kai sang the crazy part but it was D.O. who did the screaming at the end. I was surprised and wondered why they didn't show that in the MV. Felt cheated and sad that so many EXO newcomers don't know that.

In Korean Mama is a term they use to address a leader or king or queen. It's a term of reverence and respect. It's similar to saying "Your majesty." If you watch very many historical Korean dramas you will hear the characters call the royal family, and especially the head of the royal family or leader, "Mama." So, in this song, they are speaking to the leader or deity who sent them to Earth, essentially asking, "Now that I'm here, Your Majesty what should I do? How do I fulfill what you have sent me to do? etc."
To truly understand EXO you need to understand that EXO debuted in 2012. "Mama" is how EXO was introduced to the world and it explains the group's concept. From day one, EXO's concept is that they are aliens from planet EXO and they came to Earth with superpowers to protect the Tree of Life from the Red Forces. Each of the members has a superpower that is unique to them and almost every MV will have at least one if not all of them using their powers.
The symbols you saw represents each of the members and it has to do with each of their powers. For instance, Kai's symbol is a pyramid and it represents teleportation, and Lay's symbol is a unicorn and it represents his power of healing, etc. (In future MVs and other things to do with EXO, when you see things like a pyramid, you know that is a reference to something to do with Kai, etc.) Even the most minute of details in EXO's content has something to do with their origin story and EXO's storyline.
Exo, as in exoskeleton, means "outer," so as a member of EXO they are outside the ordinary.The groups concept comes from the real term exoplanet, which is a term that is used for a planet that is outside our solar system, so their name was chosen to represent the fact that they are stars that are "out of this world" when it comes to their talents. EXO's concept is also connected to real life planetary and solar events so many of EXO's comebacks and new song releases for the main group of EXO are connected to when eclipses and other planetary phenomenons take place. For example, their War album and Power album release and comeback coincided with when we had a solar eclipse, etc. SM Entertainment has all their release dates and concepts planned out for years in advance and it all has something to do with real celestial events that are predicted to take place.
As I think you know, in order to really understand EXO, as you know, In the beginning there was 12 members and they were split up into 2 groups EXO-K and EXO-M. EXO-K sang and performed their songs in Korean and EXO-M sang and performed those same songs in Mandarin Chinese. EXO-K had 6 Korean members and EXO-M had 4 Chinese members and 2 Korean members.
So the two worlds the narrator is talking about is The EXO-K version of their world and the parallel universe which is EXO-M's version of their world. The Tree of life is split in half to represent the two groups -- one half is EXO-K and the other half is EXO-M. They are separate and yet the same and when the tree of life is reunited they will become one once again and restore peace in the universe.
However, as you also probably know, since then 3 of the 4 Chinese members have left the group (short answer to focus on their solo work back in China) but there is still one Chinese member left, Lay. (Any performances or MVs you watch that took place prior to May 2014 you will see all 12 of the members. Kris and Luhan left in 2014 and Tao left in 2015.) However, now -- because they no longer have enough Chinese members -- they no longer do separate promotions, but they still produce almost all of their main track songs in both Korean and Mandarin they just now promote all as one big group EXO with 9 members.
So, not only does EXO have amazing MVs, but it's almost always double because most of the time when they have a Korean version they also will have a Mandarin version, so it means they have to shoot two separate videos.Their fandom name is EXO-L because L falls right between K and M and it stands for Love. 😍Get it? EXO-K, EXO-L, EXO-M (K-L-M in the alphabet)
In the EXO-K version of "Mama" the EXO-K members -- Suho, Baekhyun, D.O., Chanyeol, Kai and Sehun -- are using their powers to search for and meet up with the EXO-M members. That is why you see the K members traveling to find the M member. For example, you see Kai using his power of teleportation as he searches for the M members and you see Baekhyun use his power of light and Suho with his power of water, Chanyeol with the power of fire using his Phoenix wings, D.O. with the power of earth and strength and Sehun controlling the wind. Because Xiumin is a member of EXO-M, you see him appear in the mirror because the K members are searching for him and he is being summoned, etc. As the story goes, when EXO arrived on Earth they did not all arrive together. Their story starts out that they were dropped on Earth in different locations all over the world and they have to search for each other and meet up, kind of like in a quest, before they can begin to figure out how to accomplish the tasks they have been sent to Earth to do.
When you see the members all together in their "Mama" MVs they are together because they are still on Planet Exo, where they are still united. But when you see them separated it is when they have all been sent to Earth.They keep flashing back and forth between present moments and recent past moments. So, how I interpret it is that at the end they aren't back together yet, but that is a scene from when they were still on EXO Planet as they are preparing to be sent to Earth. The two worlds the narrator talks about in the introduction could possibly be different dimensions, so you often see parts of their story which could be interpreted as them being in different dimensions or time periods or different moments in history.
Each of the members in EXO-K has a counterpart in EXO-M so part of what you were seeing in these MVs was them showing you which EXO-K member corresponded with which EXO-M member. For example Suho (EXO-K) with the power of water corresponds with Xiumin (EXO-M) who has the power of frost/ice and Chanyeol (EXO-K) with the power of fire is Kris' (EXO-M) counterpart because he is the power of flight, and as you saw in the EXO-M MV, Chanyeol has the power of the phoenix and Kris has the power of the dragon which both animal spirits have fire elements and flight so they connect; D.O. (EXO-K) with the power of force and Chen (EXO-M) with the power of thunder/lightning; and Sehun (EXO-K) who has the power of wind is connected to Tao (EXO-M) who controls time; Baekhyun (K) with the power of light and Lay (M) with the power of healing; and Kai (K) with teleportation and Luhan (M) with telekinesis; etc. That's how they maintain their bond even as members of separate groups.
Also, each member in EXO-K has a counterpart in EXO-M that fills the same role in each group. For example, D.O. is the main vocalist in EXO-K and Chen is the main vocalist in EXO-M; Baekhyun is the second main vocalist in K and Luhan was the second main vocalist in M; Chanyeol is the main rapper in K and Kris was the main rapper in M; Sehun is the lead rapper in K and Xiumin is the lead rapper in M; Kai is the main dancer in K and Lay is the main dancer in M; and then it's Suho is a lead vocalist in K and Tao was a rapper/vocalist in M (I'm not sure how these two really work together because Tao is more of a rapper and Suho is a vocalist, but because they are the last two they are put together.)
That was Kai who does the screamo part in the EXO-K MV. The tattoos on Kai's face and body say EXO and also all of the EXO members names, or at least the 6 EXO-K members names, as well as EXO's symbol and other hidden clues to EXO's origin story.
Now that you have seen "Mama" and are starting to understand EXO's backstory, as you watch all of their other MVs, it should make more sense to you if you keep in mind all the details about them being aliens with superpowers and how they are on a mission, etc.

Mama in Korean is an apellation for a queen. It has the same meaning as "Your majesty".
Basically, they're asking their "Mama" about how they feel sad and disappointed about human's life on earth.
They're asking "why human are like this ? why don't they love each other ?" etc.

In the Korean version mv, all 12 of them are in there, although the one singing are EXO-K members. Same with the Mandarin version. It is also like that in History mv and Wolf mv. Growl was the first song were EXO-K & M were singing together.

You have to remember that even though Sehun & Chanyeol are the main rappers, Kai did the scremo part because he is also a Rapper , not main, but also a rapper, as well as a vocalist, but as you light know his main position is DANCE. And even if he wasn‘t you can always expect EXO members do something that they aren‘t known for, for example Baekhyun rapping or something like that.
In EXO K Version only Kai did it.
In EXO M Version Xiumin & Kris did it.
I am so glad you also took the time to watch the EXO-M version of "Mama," because the whole point of both the EXO-K and EXO-M versions of their songs and each MV is to introduce you to EXO's concept and storyline. "Mama" is like the first episode of EXO's drama -- it sets up everything to come in the rest of the series. And if you miss any part of the first episode you will forever be lost when it comes to the rest of EXO's story. So it's important to watch both versions. And that goes for all of EXO's MV, if you watch both versions of everything EXO does, you might be able to understand a little more about EXO's mission and everything they have been sent to Earth to do.
EXO debuted in 2012 so "Mama" is more than 8 years ago. Xiumin, the oldest, was about 22 at this time and Sehun and Kai, who are the youngest, were about 18. However, Suho and Kai were the members that trained the longest with the company before they debuted. Suho was a trainee for 7 years -- he began when he was about 14 years old (he was about 21 when he debuted) -- and Kai was a trainee for about 6 years -- he started training when he was about 12. But Baekhyun was only a trainee for about 6 months before he debuted. He was one of the older trainees at about 20 years old. So this just goes to show you the amount of hard word, dedication and talent that EXO has.
As an SM Entertainment group it's really no surprise that the members are all amazing vocalists and dancers because that's just a fact about the type of people that SM selects to be a part of its company. SM has become known for its amazing vocalists and dancers and that is why it's one of the big 3 entertainment companies in Korea and around the world.
All of the members of EXO are amazing vocalists even their rappers. If you follow SM Entertainment groups, you will soon discover that all of SM's rappers were actually chosen to become trainees for their vocal and/or dancing skills. All of SM's rappers learned to rap, or at least became good at it, after they joined the company. Therefore, all of SM's artists are amazing singers -- being good at rapping is just a bonus.
You also should look up the lyrics for "Mama." As you noticed, the majority of their chant is in English: "Shoot anonymous, anonymous; Heartless, mindless; No one who care about me ... Careless, careless (Mama: Mama in Korean means Your Majesty); Shoot anonymous, anonymous (Mama); Heartless, mindless (Mama); No one who care about me (Mama)" Also, if you pay attention to what the whole song is talking about and what the lyrics mean it will give you even more insight into why EXO have been sent to Earth and what their mission is all about.
EXO's storyline begins with them being sent to Earth to try and heal the world and to stop and prevent the Red Force from taking over and corrupting everything. And the story in the lyrics of "Mama" foreshadows what they will have to overcome and understand about humans and our world to accomplish their tasks. EXO kind of takes humanity to task and asks us to explain why we would allow all this anger and hatred to cloud everything around us and why we don't love each other more? It's really a very beautiful message and the more you learn about EXO the more interesting the whole thing becomes.
In the song the members, being aliens from another planet, are struggling to understand how we as humans could allow all this evil and bad things to happen all around us, such as war, hate and the destruction of the environment etc. and they are daunted by the fact that they are now tasked with figuring out how to fix it all and prevent more evil from taking place. That's why they need to find the two halves of the Tree of Life and reunite them to restore peace.
In the EXO-M MV Xiumin and Kris are the members that do the screamo part.
EXO's story is part supernatural and Sci-Fi and part based on reality, which touches on real life events and things that are really happening in the world. And from the very beginning, even during pre-debut days, and everything since then and everything yet to come, it all is connected to that storyline. Everything EXO does and everything you see from them, including Baekhyun and Kai's parts in SuperM, all has something to do with the concept and story that began with "Mama," and each new installment of something from the members expands a little further on EXO's story. Whether it's an MV from the group, a solo project from one of the members, a sub-unit project, a live performance, teaser videos, concert VCRs, or even a good amount of their choreography, it all has been designed to connect to EXO's storyline.
It's kind of mind blowing the amount of planning and manipulation SM has been doing over the years to connect all the dots and to continue the story. It gets even crazier when you realize how even the most minute of details were crafted to be a hidden message or detail within that storyline.
For example, In EXO's "Overdose" MV they have been lured into and trapped in a maze by the Red Force and they are trying to use their superpowers to figure out a way to escape, but somehow the maze affects their powers and it causes them to lose control and allows the Red Force to capture them. After "Overdose," the story picks up in their "Lucky One" MV where the Red Force has transferred the members from the maze to a hospital-like setting that is supposed to be a government lab facility where the Red Force is now doing experiments on EXO to figure out what makes them special and to find a way to disrupt their connection to the Tree of Life and to prevent them from gaining control, as well as maybe figure out what they need to do to clone them like we see has been done in their "Obsession" MV, etc. In "Lucky One" the members use their powers to overthrow the Red Force and to escape the facility. And that is where the story picks up in their "Ko Ko Bop" MV. in "Ko Ko Bop" EXO are free from the Red Forces' control for the moment and they all act like they are in a drugged state. The Ko Ko Bop drink that Suho mixes and the wafers or pills that the members all take, is supposed to help them detox from the drugs they were given against their will by the Red Force when they were being experimented on. Because they are still a little loopy from the drugs, in "Ko Ko Bop" you see them all playing with their powers without caution.
Unfortunately, to make it even more difficult to understand, each part of the story is not necessarily in chronological order, so we, as EXO-L, have to become detectives and analyze every aspect of everything any of the members are involved in to try and piece it all together and figure out where each part fits within their larger storyline.
To help you pinpoint the powers being used in their MVs and live performances here is a list of the members and what their special power is.
EXO-K
💦 Suho (Kim JunMyeon) is the leader of the group and he is a lead vocalist -- his power is the ability to control water (Fun fact: Suho in Korean means guardian, as in the guardian of EXO. That's why as the leader of EXO, his stage name is Suho)
💡Baekhyun is a main vocalist and his superpower is the ability to control light
🔥Chanyeol is the main rapper and lead vocalist -- his power is the ability to control fire and his spirit animal is the phoenix.
🌏D.O. (Do KyungSoo) is a main vocalist and his power is the ability to control earth (dirt) which gives him strength/force
☄Kai (Kim JongIn) is a main dancer, lead vocalist and sub-rapper and his power is teleportation
(Kai means door or gateway, so his stage name is supposed to foreshadow his role within EXO's storyline.)
🌪Sehun is the youngest member of the group and he is a lead rapper, lead dancer and a vocalist -- his power is the ability to control wind
EXO-M
❄Xiumin (Kim MinSeok) is the oldest member of the group and he is a lead vocalist and lead rapper and his power is the ability to control snow/ice (frost)
🦄 Lay (Zhang Yixing) is the Chinese member of the group, he is a main dancer, lead vocalist and rapper -- his power is the ability to heal anything.
🌩 Chen (Kim JongDae) is a main vocalist and his power is the ability to control thunder/lightning/electricity
(As you can see, Xiumin and Chen were given stage names that sounded more Chinese so they would fit in better in EXO-M because they are the Korean members of the Chinese group)
The Chinese members who, eventually, leave the group:
🐉 Kris was the leader of EXO-M and he was a main rapper and vocalist -- his power was the ability to fly and his spirit animal was a dragon
💭 Luhan was a main vocalist and his power was telekinesis (The ability to control things with his mind)
⏰Tao (Z.Tao) was a lead rapper and vocalist and the martial artist of the group, so he did the flips and stunts in the group's routines. His power was the ability to control time

Tbh I feel super cringy when watching this MV for the first time lol. EXO members must have laughed a lot too during the shooting I guess.
Do you see what would have made them a hit shortly after debut? They intrigued everyone so much with this concept and performances that they became an overnight sensation with worldwide popularity at such a young age.....the year following their debut in April 2012, they were promoting their 1st album "Mama" (it means "your majesty' in Korean) and their 2nd album "XOXO", this got them nominated for 4 awards at the MAMA Awards (Mnet Asian Music Awards which is like the Asian Grammys. Very prestigious award show out of all the award shows in Asia (there's dozens of different shows). It features artists from Korea, China, Japan HongKong, Mongolia, Malaysia, Thailand, Viet Nam, Cambodia, Philippines, India, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan...Kpop, Cpop and Jpop have the lead in nominated artists being so popular throughout Asia.
Of course, artists nominated perform sometime in the show. The show can be 6 hours long and can be covered in two days. It includes all the glitter and glamour like the Grammys, the Red Carpet and limousines, frantic fans and massive paparazzi, incredible stages and a massive audience. They also feature guest artists who come and perform live, from John Legend to Stevie Wonder to Wiz Khalifa.....
So in 2013 (when Bts debuted, babies too), Exo were nominated for Album of the Year, Artist of the Year, Song of the Year and Best Dance Performance/Male Group. Their performance at the show was epic. They performed "Growl" and "Wolf". Have you seen these mvs?
They are students at a high school wearing various forms of the grey school uniforms. Besides their superpowers, they also have the power to turn into wolves, especially when angered. One group of 6 rival the other 6, and they always seem to be fighting over a girl in school.
At the MAMA Awards, they save the Album of the Year award for the very end.

Also, in the "Mama" video, Exo-K version, the first singer is D.O., the member with the writing on face screaming is Kai, in Exo-M, Tao (pron. like "cow") was the martial artist with the spear, and Xiumin and Kris were the screamers.
In Exo OT12, Chanyeol, Sehun, Kai, Xiumin, Kris and Tao are rappers. The first four are still Exo's rappers. And yes, that was baby Suho with the hair covering one eye, and baby Sehun with the bangs standing in the wind.🤘💙

I love how you guys react to both version of MV because for Korean version we only can watch EXO-K sing. But in mandarin version we got EXO-M sing too. Good job! Because I noticed some youtubers only react to korean version and they missed EXO-M sing most importantly Chen sing for his high note 😍. I'm so happy you both liked it. Because when it first came out they were hated a lot and people called them SM's first flop. And because of this they went on a hiatus for one year and worked more on themselves. And their comeback growl was a hit. That's when they rose up to where they're now.
Before you move on to the other songs on this album you have to check out the lyrics for this. It’s one of my favorite songs just because of the lyrics and it speaks more on their concept of teaching us how to love again and not be greedy. And the person you was singing in the beginning of Exo K was D.O

The other two are xiumin and kris wu. Backstory on kris, he has successfully broken into the us market, collaborating with Travis Scott and many other main stream artists. Due to COVID, he has been mostly active in China now. One of his songs hit big time, it’s called ‘big bowl thick noodle ‘.

The music videos, vcr’s in the concerts, some stages in their concert are telling us a continuous story. Well, it all started in MAMA MV. The animation explains the grounds of EXO story. They are from Exo Planet. They are protecting the heart of the tree of life (they use this reference in many of their stages forming a tree.) The red force is gone bad and needs to be purified. There is another animated MV, Power, is telling about the fight between Exo and the red force.
They can travel from Exo Planet to Earth only during eclipses (so they release mvs or else only by eclipse dates). It’s a well built fiction supported by everything they do.
Why don’t we enjoy the songs without MVs on concert clips instead of lyrics videos?
On EXO-K version, Kai did the intense scream-rap part.
On EXO-M version, Xiumin then Kris did the intense scream-rap part.
In the early EXO eras, Kai is actually more of a rapper then slowly transitioned into a vocalist.
Xiumin is an all-rounder so he's good at singing/rapping/dancing since debut.
Kris is actually EXO-M's main rapper together with Tao.
Let's just say EXO-K and EXO-M are counter-parts of each other. Not only when it comes to their powers but also on their positions.

Actually for me EXO-M 's line up is so good too! A very good and charismatic rapper like Kris Wu(actor and hiphop artist now in america and china) also Tao's rapper(actor and artist in china) and he's good in martial arts too. A vocalist like chen and Luhan(2nd most paid artist in china) and A main dancer like Lay(we miss u lay go back to korea now with your bros).. Luhan is also their center like Kai in exo-k.
