Fun fact: Some clips from these MVs were taken from their pre-debut teasers. That's why some of the clips look random or out of place (e.g. Kai and Lay sliding in the Mandarin version)

History was released on March 8, 2012.
MAMA was released on April 8, 2012 (this is their debut song).
The man who produced this song, also worked on a lot of Michael Jackson songs, for example my favorite MJ song: Remember the Time. He also worked on Songs of Blackstreet, like the most famous one: No Diggity. He also worked on a song from Jay-Z: The City is Mine. Another great example: Bobby Brown - My prerogative (maybe you know the song because Britney Spears did a remake of this)
Teddy Riley is one of the most influential and most popular producers and songwriters out there, especially in the Oldschool RnB / HipHop scene.

I don‘t listen to the EXO-M Versions often, yes I checked them out, but I kind of forgot what they sounded like and relistening to them with you is crazy. Because it‘s not just that the EXO-M members sing in another language, but also the vocal techniques they are using are completely different sometimes, so it‘s really different.
You have never heard a song like this by them ? I know so far, you haven‘t , but believe me EXO is known for R n B. You will see many R n B songs when you listen to more albums.
EXO is the only Kpop group which does R n B in an authentic way, I mean this song was even produced by Teddy Riley (producer and songwriter for Michael Jackson, Blackstreet and more.. he produced and wrote songs that I am very sure that Alan knows of or even listens to)
And fyi: It wasn‘t just Kai dancing (with the hat), Sehun danced too in the Musicvideo (Sehun even is a Main Dancer nowadays)
and in EXO-M Version Lay danced too.

But in the Exo-m version Lay & Kai were dancing.

Jordan is right about Kyungsoo(D.O) - Luhan sitting, and Chen - Baekhyun standing up; but Alan was right about Chen doing all the hight notes. In Exo-K version, Baekhyun and Kyungsoo shared them equally, but in Exo-M Chen did them all. I think the reason is Chen is vocally more powerful than Luhan. In Exo, Chen-Baekhyun-Kyungsoo are main vocalists, Luhan was a lead vocalist.
Absolutely right about Chen doing the high notes in the Mandarin version. Luhan has a very soothing voice suited for ballads and back then he wasn't a vocal powerhouse like Chen, Baekhyun and DO. I really recommend you guys checking out EXO's "It's My Turn to Cry" Korean and Mandarin versions to see how Luhan's softer voice gives a whole different feel to the song. I admit I prefer the Korean version for "What is Love" but for "It's My Turn to Cry" , the Mandarin version wins hands down for me. Looking forward to this reaction 😊

What is Love is one of the best EXO songs out there. No doubt. Baekhyun and D.O. are killing it (Chen & Luhan too, but for me the EXO-K Version is way better)
This predebut release was to showcase the talent of the main vocals of EXOk (Baek and DO) and EXOm (Chen and Luhan) to people to trigger the people’s interest and also to introduce the members ☺️

You guys keep comparing some of EXO music to American R&B and Pop. Well if you look at the beginning of the EXO-M video, they give credit to producers and a person listed is Teddy Riley. This is the same guy that created the 90s R&B group Blackstreet and he produced the Dangerous album for Michael Jackson. Aside from this song, Teddy Riley also gave EXO Growl and Call Me Baby. Oh.... and Teddy can also be heard introducing D.O. during the Exoplanet 1 concert before D.O. starts singing his lyrics in Tell Me What Is Love. SM Entertainment was wise in enlisting a Grammy winning R&B/Pop producer early in EXOs career.
They had like 30 different debut teasers showing off songs, dancing, and storyline stuff. They put a lot of the non performance ones together to make up a lot of the What is Love MV :)
The guy with red headphone is correct, Chen sang both D.O and Baekhyun high note part. The line distribution in Chinese version is a little different from the Korea Version.
Tao was in both videos. He did the karate part. In the Mandarin version the time stamp is 13:34. But all of them were in both videos. Can't wait for you guys to keep on your EXO journey! So many great songs and videos coming your way

All members are present in both videos, each one has moments throughout while the two "leads" sing. Tao is pronounced like the word ow but with a T addded on lol thats the easiest way I can explain it, he is/was a martial artist so we see him kicking some guys butt. I recommend you guys checking out guides to Tao, Luhan, and Kris after looking at the remaining members, some might tell you not to as they are no longer in the group but they were apart of the group and they are in the older M/Vs so I think it'll give you a better insight to the group as a whole as well as how those members fit in with the rest of the group. Also check out those guys solo music they got some pretty good songs :D

"What is Love" features the 4 main vocalists of EXO, so, in the EXO-K (Korean) version you only hear D.O. and Baekhyun's voices, and in the EXO-M (Mandarin) version Chen and Luhan are the singers. These are the main vocalists from their respective groups. However, in the MV you see most of the members. The rest of the members aren't singing the song, but they are helping to tell a story. This was their very first pre-debut MV -- about 3 or 4 months before "Mama" -- so it is setting up EXO's storyline and it's showing the members. This was before most people really even knew who EXO were.
As you are starting to discover, if you are going to try and follow EXO's storyline and understand their concept as a group then you need to watch both the EXO-K and EXO-M MVs of all their songs, at least until "Overdose," (and in my opinion, I think you should actually see both versions of ALL of their MVs) because EXO-M MVs and performances are just as important as the EXO-K versions.
Now to explain the story in their what is Love" MV, if you notice, you see an eclipse is happening. The eclipse is what controls EXO's powers and it's where they get their power and strength from. So, that is why you see in most of their MVs that they focus on the moon or show an eclipse taking place, etc. EXO are aliens so staring at an eclipse or the sun doesn't affect them in the same way. After all they come from Planet Exo, which has two suns. LOL
In the MV for "What Is Love." you see clips from some of their pre-debut teaser videos. All the clips in the MV are special clips that were originally released one at a time on their own to introduce EXO to the world, before the group's official debut. Before EXO debuted SM released 23 teaser videos over a 3 month period and the videos showcased the members and their talents, such as Kai's special dances and Tao's martial arts skills, as well as told a story about EXO who are on a quest to find each other and to find clues to locate the Tree of Life, etc. Kai was the member that was featured in the most teasers -- somewhere around 10 videos. The "What is Love" MV takes clips of those teaser videos and puts them together to make the MV. Months and years later, we have also discovered that the teasers also were teasers to EXO's discography of songs. At the time, when the teasers were released, we had no idea the significance of the songs that you hear in the teasers. But now, over the years, we have discovered that the majority of the songs that were featured in EXO's pre-debut teasers were also meant to be teasers to songs that would be released as some of the main tracks of EXO's albums.
All the teasers are still on SM's TH-cam channel if you want to check them out. If you watch the teasers, you will see how planned out everything EXO is involved in actually is. Most of the songs that they released even years after debut were songs that were teased to in their pre-debut teaser videos. That just goes to show you why we say that everything EXO does comes back to their storyline. :D Absolutely everything has been planned out down to the most minute detail for years in advance and for years to come.
However, not all of the songs you hear in the teasers were songs that made it to the albums or maybe they are songs that haven't been released yet. There are several songs in the teasers that we still don't know. Maybe they are songs that have not been released yet or maybe they may never exist as a full song. It's another part of EXO's mystery that we are waiting to discover.
So you have to watch both "What is Love" MVs to see the different clips and try and figure out the story it is trying to tell. EXO's MVs may look similar, but in each version there are hidden messages and Easter eggs that SM puts in each MV that tell a little more of the story, even still today. Plus, in the Korean version they highlight the EXO-K members where in the Mandarin version they highlight the EXO-M members. It's a common misconception that just because EXO's 2 MVs look similar on the surface that you don't need to watch both versions, but if you skip the Mandarin version of EXO's MVs -- especially these early MVs when they were still a full group -- I guarantee you are going to miss a key part of their story. Plus, you miss out on hearing the EXO-M members and what the song sounds like in Mandarin.
I wish more people would understand that SM didn't only make a Mandarin version of EXO's songs to appeal to their Chinese audience. EXO-M was very much a part of EXO's storyline and the EXO-M or Mandarin MVs are just as an important part of EXO's storyline as the Korean version. They actually shot two separate MVs for each version, so the parts that look the same were deliberately made to look the same and there are almost always subtle differences in both versions because it is telling the story from a different angle or from the other group's perspective. As the intro to "Mama" points out EXO are made up of two groups who stand on the same ground and see similar things and they stand on separate grounds and see the same thing. So even the most minute detail has a purpose within EXO's storyline, nothing is done by chance or random. And that still continues today, even though they don't promote as EXO-K and EXO-M any more, you will still see subtle nods to the EXO-M members and the role that their group plays in EXO's larger storyline. You often see moments in EXO's choreography where the EXO-M members who are still left are singled out or put together, etc. Because EXO-M's part of the story is still important to the storyline even when they are a group of 9.
It makes me so happy that you are watching both the EXO-K and EXO-M versions of their MVs, because not enough reactors give EXO-M credit. Why do people always pick the Korean version to react to and sell the EXO-M members short and not give them the views they deserve as well? There is no reason why the EXO-M version of EXO's songs should have about half as many views, and yet they do. Plus, the Mandarin version shouldn't give you any more copyright issues than the Korean version would because they are produced and marketed by the same company. And in many cases I think the Mandarin version may give you less copyright issues because the "copyright police" are monitoring the Mandarin versions less closely because far less people react to those versions. :D

Why do u say Exo got influenced by American R n B singers around the time this song was released as if they are trying to copy these singers or sound like them.
These exo men had their own feels and several influences. All singers do...but anytime u hear kpop singers sing soulishly or blues people begin to comment about influence and how they sound like American stars.....pls give kpop singers their awesome credits and not like they copied American stars...it could even be the other way round.
