Great overview. As a Canadian, I can attest to the pleasure of being outside in winter. A big part of that pleasure is the absence of noisy car campers and of biting insects.

Clay.. You hit the nail on the head when you talk about layers. I tend to over heat even in cold weather so layers are key. Having lived in AK & MT, I too am a big fan of wool.. and will often add an oilcloth outer to it. The one time that cotton shines is when it's hot and arid.
Excellent videos.. looking forward to more.

shadowcastre Yep, wool is kickass. Even in hot weather a thin wool base layer is great. It blows cotton away for wicking ability. Cotton just gets wet and smelly. wool stays dry and doesn't retain odor. try it.

True. Here in S. Idaho, I have the Boreal Shirt from Lester. Thing is awesome man. The lady knits %100 wool hats and socks for us too. I really need to get some wool pants. Then, it's a full body suit! :D

A wind proof outer shell is very important. Wool WILL soak up moisture but it still insulates. I've replaced my down layer with thinsulate ultra. Like wool it still insulates when it is damp. Most people wait until they just start to sweat before they de-layer. When I have to hike into an area I start COLD with my base layer and "layer-up" only if I need to to stay warm. Even Merino can absorb water so I have a synth compression layer as my base with the Merino over that. the synth layer is a garment form INtelliskin with special panels sewn in that keep your spine and shoulder where they need to be. I'm older now and when I am stalking around looking a ground sign I tend to hunch over too much and it leads to back pain as the day wears on. It's an odd material. WIth even the thin Merino over it, it as warm as hell but you take of the Merino it instant cooling.
Boots. I wear all leather boots because they can be repaired. Before you buy a boot with a nylon upper/outer, be sure the Gortex is the next layer. I once bought a boot from cabelas where the gortex was INSIDE the insulation. I had to wade and icy creek. The boots were still warm but the insulation OUTSIDE the GOrtex soak up about 50 pounds of water and just walking in them wore me out and it took 7 days on the boot dryer to dry them out.
I gre up pin the Gae of Wool. That's al there was. I have heavy Woolrich shirts that are 40 years old and still going strong. It's pricey but it's the best investment you can make when your life is on the line

Hi Clay, I enjoy your videos. It was -15 to -20 degrees our last week of bow season here in Nor Mn. The walking & still-hunting was ok, but I had to plan out my stand times. I had some chilled fingers, toes, and end of stand cold to fight off, but other then that, it was another day at the beach! The last day of season, after 5 days of cold weather hunting, it was -26... That's when I rolled back under the covers and called it for the year ;-) ... Keep up the good work! Peace, DB.

I've seen my share of outdoor winter dress videos and this one is the best. And, it was only 6 minutes long! I wish you were still making videos. I pray the Lord Jesus bless you for the neat videos I've enjoyed watching!

One other thing you didn't mention, especially for sitting and stalking, is using felted wool insoles. The direct contact sucks a lot of heat out of your feet through conduction. The felted wool forms to your foot, and gives it some insulation to that loss.
I wear uninsulated leather hiking boots or knee boots, one pair of good wool socks and felted wool insoles. If it's really cold and I'm sitting for a long time, like last opening day of gun season when it was -10°F for a high.... I have some insulated boot covers that keep the heat in great (put them on when you first sit, don't walk in them).

+Miles Thompson Thanks for mentioning those tips. I've never tried the over boot covers but I might now. ch

+Clay Hayes I have only used the Arctic Shield ones, no experience with the sleeping bag ones.
The ones I have pack nice, just stick one inside the other and roll them both up tight; ends up a bit larger than a soda can.
There's enough room in the toe area when they are on to put a hand or foot warmer pack in under your shoes, but this can make my feet sweat and that ends up colder in the end... Moisture kills in cold weather!
I picked them up on sale locally for around $30, have had 3 years use out of them and should get easily that many more. If the bottom was leather, they'd last forever just sitting/standing in them, 's I may replace the bottoms when I need to.
Best of luck on your upcoming trips. Looking forward to seeing new footage...you make the best hunting videos I've seen.

You only have one layer of wool. The best plan is to have layers of wool with a windproof breathable outer.

You can control the cold temperatures based on how many jumping jacks or pushups you do. The temp goes up as you do more.

Clay Hayes Thanks! I've looked at those (if they're the bighorns or malones) and the ones from Ibex. The Ibex's are awesome but too spendy for me.

Clay Hayes While I've got you here, can you recommend a book for learning how to better track mammals? (I saw the bird track book you mentioned, but was hoping for one on mammals...)

    • @clayhayeshunter
      @clayhayeshunter  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Mammal tracks and sign by Mark Elbroch is a good guide to track ID. It's also got a lot of practical info on tracking and trailing.
