    My dad is 88. He used to play drums in jazz groups in New York after returning home from service in the Korean War, then worked with computers in the 1970’s. I showed him Superior Drummer 3 last week and it was like he saw an alien...he was so fascinated and blown away by what’s become possible in his lifetime. That was a fun afternoon!

      Zombie Machinery you know it man. The world is full of music purist pricks, especially in jazz. My dad’s cool, he was trying to get me to write music on his Mac in the mid 90’s but I wasn’t interested at the time. I started in 2002 when a band mate showed me Logic.

      for whatever I’ve been there. It’s depressing, but better to do it while they’re still around. Dealing with all that after they pass away really sucks. At least now it’s done.

    Seeing as you've been so generous with your knowledge I'm going to do likewise. The entire guitar playing enterprise is built on the grip of the pick. Almost everything about it falls apart if the grip is "insecure". It creates tension that kills rhythm, synchronisation & accuracy. Move the pick towards the side of the finger, but not quite & you should be laughing. Think about how we say "come here" with our index finger but with the thumb along for the ride.

    If i had a teacher like this in school maybe i would have listened. Thanks for being the teacher i never had. Love your lovely energy! I (not to brag) was around when Drumkit From Hell got released. And as a young adult i was amazed what a difference in sound a certain compression preset setting did for the snaredrum that Fredrik Thordendal (One of toontrack originators), created. Rock on, i mean orchester on!

    Excellent review, thank you. I opted for the EastWest ProDrummer library (mostly because I got it on sale), which looks very similar in many ways. The samples are excellent as you'd expect from EastWest, although it doesn't look like you get quite so many drum options or articulations. What you do get sounds great, though, with extensive mixing ability. I was impressed by the number of mics involved. It's basically like having a pro drummer come in and lay down a few tracks for you. I'm an abysmal drummer but I do have an electronic kit, so I can play direct to ProDrummer. It's a lot more practical than setting up a whole live kit. Anyway, again, thank you.

    I have been using Easy Drummer (which preceeded Superior Drummer) in my original smooth jazz / funk recordings for the last several years. I have listeners (some pro musicians) asking me who my drummer is and who did the sound engineering. I enjoy telling them it's me...! I am a tenor saxophonist and keyboard player. Excellent demonstration Guy of how you can use this fantastic tool. I will stick with the Easy Drummer. It takes up much less room on my SSD hard drive than Superior Drummer. It's all about creativity man.... Guy you are so entertaining man. I know you are having tons of fun. Thanks...

    You almost fell out of your new chair..... Toontracks has been my goto drum kit for years. (EZ Drummer my 1st too) What I have players do is one of two ways of recording their drummer live. One is separate tracks for the kit. Then I can convert each track to a midi file in Cubase and replace desired parts of the kit with Superior drummer 3. The other way is that some players use electronic kits and they record the drum tracks as well as the corresponding MIDI tracks to each part of the kit. I import to Cubase and edit. Love the samples in Superior Drummer 3. Being a drummer before I got into scoring, It takes the worry out of having a piece of kit that works perfectly right out of the box. And for quicky sessions, I have a selection of pre-made loops for easy drop-in and play. I have no less than 10 custom kits, on & on. Great vid Guy.

    Thanks for showing the guitar playing.. I was a bit demotivated with your piano playing the last time (because i just can't play.. i started learning now though ;)) however i DO play the guitar myself.
    ..if i may give a small piece of advice: when sitting down, don't tap your right foot to the beat, as you will move the guitar up and down (as you can see), which makes it quite difficult to hit the right strings consistently with the picking hand.. try the left foot, or if it has to be the right foot, then try only moving the toes or stand up..

  • @marcusdekker
    @marcusdekker 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Ty Guy. Glad to see some of the issues i upperd at the last video adressed in this one, in your joyfull, inspiring style. Nice to see you getting out of your comfortzone (orchestral arangements) and taking bald steps ( drum rock computer programming and playing a real instrument (guitar, just kidding) and showing us how you would deal with it. This takes real guts. So, i can only say, as they do; RESPECT!! (ar-ee-es-pe-ee-see- tee 😊).
    Kidding, but not realy. I thought all if you classical schooled musicians should be able to play two instruments; piano and than your main...real, propper, instrument (like the triangle or the bugle).
    A fan.

  • @Harrysound

    Your guitar playing is like my piano playing!
    We can always trade skills, if you need some guitar tracks!!
    The way i use SD, i will take the stock grooves, and edit them similarly to fit them to my guitar or bass parts. I often will use cymbal hits to emphasize vocals as well. not being a drummer, or having anywhere to track one, SD is a lifesaver

  • @timbeaton5045
    @timbeaton5045 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Yep. Been down exactly the same road... EZ drummer->SD2-> SD3. It's great, as demonstrated here, and it does have a load of depth to it.
    2 things...
    One) You don't have to download/install all 240GBytes of samples... if you don't need the extra 11.1 mics, the basic kit is only(!) 40GB, so makes it easier. You can always download the rest at a later date if you need them.
    Two) it IS 40GB in size!
    If you haven't seen it, you might want to check out the MODOdrum package released recently (IK MultiMedia , i think). It is more of a Modelling kit, rather than a massive sampled library. And what it lacks in ultimate (almost overkill!) sound, it more that makes up for in editablilty and the fact that it's much smaller that standard sampled kits. Check Dancetech's YT page for a great demo of this instrument.
    PS, finally connected you to the Guy Michelmore i remember from the "Old Days" and the infamous "Coffee Incident!" Glad to see your sense of humour is still as irreverent as ever!
    Great videos. Have you on Bell notifications!

    There is nothing like SuperiorDrummer that I'm aware of and if you add the SDX orchestral percussion thingie it's even better for getting real life drums in a can. That said you also have some kind of small GrooveAgent SE in Cubase and the big brother pro version of GrooveAgent is a bottomless well of tools for creating, editing, squeezing, bending, wrapping and skewing beats and sounds not necessarily intended to sound natural. Great for any timed sound FX and paired with a some 4x4 drum pads it really shines. SuperiorDrummer and GrooveAgent is a lethal combo!!!

    This is propably one of the most comprehensive and well wrote Drum plugins. One thing I would really like from toontracks tho is ... Drum editor and drum layout files have been around since the Atari days of Cubase and has always been a good editor for making drum tracks... so why don't they provide some drum layouts for cubase of the base sets included in the program. Then you can easy change the i-notes in cubase if you like me have pretty much all drum placements on the keybed in the head from the days of GM/GS so you can use your favorite layout no matter wich strange note placements they have for all those different articulations. EZ drummer been a favorite of mine for years but always needed to spent quite some time on doing drumsetups from scratch for it

    One of my favorite things about JXL Brass (which is 300GB!), is that you can uninstall mic positions. For example, you can merge 5 of them into 1 mic position, then free up space.
    It would be nice if you could do the same here to save some space!

    Feel BFD3 has the edge on the actual sampled sounds though have been looking at EZbass for its ability to create quick ideas and from what I can see this program has the same ability to match your style in the same way which is fabulous when ideas spring and I’ve no idea what scale I’m in but, EZbass includes a circle of fifths too.... magic and I’m still not sure if my latest idea can go C,Eb,F or should one replace the C with a Cm instead. Had me laughing (in a good way) and I learnt something too. Not sure my rubbish efforts justify the price I'd pay for this great VST and the extra SSD I'd need to buy, but you never know. How many drum synth can I own (or does my wife, the treasurer, say I can own)???
