Inline Skate Soul Slide Tutorial - How to Stop on Inline Skates/Rollerblades

  • This is my take on how to do the soul slide to control your speed on inline skates. City or urban inline skating especially require a reliable way to control your speed. Of the many techniques I use to control speed while skating, I think the soul slide is the one that gets utilized the most. It's incredibly versatile and I think every urban skater should learn it.

      Really really appreciate that, thank you! I'd be very grateful if this helped a single person. Speed control is something I very specifically put effort into as I got back into skating. It's my greatest safety mechanism. Sharing my experiences with others who are doing the same is something I really like doing.

    Thank you so much for this, the soul slide is my go to for controlling speed on downhills, I only started skating at the start of the covid situation (at 54!) but due to previous knee injuries I can't do the drag (T) stop as it puts too much sidewards pressure on my joints. So this will definately help me improve and hopefully get to the magic slide soon! Thanks. keep sharing your experience

      Wow, started skating at 54 - impressive! It's my go to for controlling speed on downhills as well. It's my go-to general purpose speed control technique. It's just so versatile and works in many situations. It's a drag stop on steroids! Thanks for watching and keep shredding :)

    Yes! Such a good tutorial. I’m definitely falling over the front leg so your points about body position and being strong on the support leg really helpful. I’m finding holding it long enough to come to a stop really tough.

    • @rerollinginline
      @rerollinginline  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for watching! Yeah I really hope that weight shift is what will help some folks unlock this if they've been struggling with it. And remember, you don't have to stay completely on that support leg, but it greatly helps with both learning how to do this slide, and initially engaging it when you go to do it. Good luck!

    SQUAT, SHIFT, CARVE, EXTEND Are words of wisdom man. I've been replaying this video since last night. I just got back from a sesh and I was actually sliding every time the form was good! Weight (shift) being the key word, was one element I was missing from my equation and many tutorials fail to mention that. Shifting weight is way easier than putting weight on supporting leg, It's genius!
    Tomorrow I'll focus on extension and hip rotation. YEE PEE!! Thank You for this Video it's pure Gold!

    Great tutorial. I've been trying to learn soul slide for well over two years now and have followed lots of online tutorials, and yours is about the best imo. I hope you make more. I'm not sure what my issue is. I think it's either poor flexibility or low confidence in taking the weight on the slight outside edge of the supporting skate, or a combo of the two. But your video suggests I seem to be not too far off in terms of technique! Thanks again 👍👍

    • @rerollinginline
      @rerollinginline  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Thanks so much! It’s likely a combination, but that’s why I put such an emphasis on where to put your weight and handle your hips. So many tutorials only focus on the feet. It does take some flexibility, but I’m not particularly flexible. I had a bit about that in the video that I cut out to be more succinct, but I didn’t think I’d ever be able to get to the 90 degree version of this.
      Also keep in mind the most important thing is to learn to slide, period. It doesn’t have to be pretty or powerful. You can refine all that with practice. The biggest hurdle is getting that skate to slide, so get it way far out at first if you have to.

    Thank you for this video, if there is one thing I've been having trouble with is slowing down in a narrow path like a sidewalk, T-stop doesn't help that much while going down a slope, but this seems to work. It took me FOREVER to understand the mechanics behind this slide. What helped it click for me was learning to be on the outside edge on the supporting foot

    • @rerollinginline
      @rerollinginline  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Nice, I’m glad you figured it out! Outside edge is almost required to do the “full 90 degree” version where the sliding skate is perpendicular to the direction of travel. As just a stopping or slowing technique though, you can be on center edge or inside edge. But yes, if you can get on the outside edge of the supporting skate, it’ll allow more range of motion in the sliding skate.

    • @wheelsonfire1982
      @wheelsonfire1982 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@rerollinginline Thanks! I guess once you develop the relevant muscles for it it becomes easier that it doesn't really matter what edge you are on as much (just like T stop). However when you're just learning it I find that being on the inside edge makes the braking foot try to "turn" you by braking force and if you don't have the muscles to resist it you'll either turn of your stance will degrade to an A which is not very good for sliding. Being on the outside edge primes your foot foot for an opposite side turn to counteract the turning forces of the slide.

    This is excellent, thank you for sharing! I watched this a few times and practiced at a low speed for a while, and I finally started getting it to happen. Initially, I was having a lot of trouble getting the skate to break free of rolling and go into sliding. You made this point briefly, but the key for me was: The foot goes OUT to the side a LOT. (at least for me so far). I was focused on the braking foot going forward at first, but mostly it needs to go out to the side to get the low angle. I'm probably only at 45 degrees so far, but already that's useful for controlling speed. I expect to gradually get more perpendicular and foot in front, with practice.
    I wonder, are you left handed? I'm right handed and I can definitely only imagine using my right leg for braking. Left foot is way harder and I can't pull that off yet.

    • @rerollinginline
      @rerollinginline  ปีที่แล้ว

      Awesome, glad you're making progress. Yeah, you never have to perfect the perpendicular motion, but it will give more stopping power. I couldn't at first, so it took me some practice. You'll most certainly refine the slide over time and improve it.
      Oddly enough, I'm right handed and right footed. Not ambidextrous in any way, for any activity or sport. The only thing I can do left is kick a soccer ball for some reason. It was the first sport I really go into and I started at 4 years old, so maybe that's why? But yeah, my left is my dominant skating for everything. Slides, balance, one-footed wizard moves like lions, etc. It baffles me. But it also baffles me I can kick a soccer ball really well with my left.

Ive been actually doing some soul slides but still doesnt look nowhere as good as yours , i did fall on my ass hard in the city center because i was leaning so far back and i was so low on my non sliding skate i couldnt get myself back up anymore haha.
    The issue im having mostly is not getting into the slide but shifting the weight from the supporting leg to the sliding leg once i initiate the slide , i tend to keep the weight on my non sliding skate and this often causes my sliding skate to slip out away from me so thats what im going to focus on so i can actually feel the stopping power.

      I’m glad it’s been helpful. Sorry you had a fall in the city! It sounds like all you need is practice, though. Maybe find a safe place to really put in the repetitions so you’ll feel comfortable doing it in the city. Eventually, you’ll be able to enter the slide at a steeper angle. You won’t have to get as low as possible to engage it after you get better at it, but I think it’s a good way of learning how to engage it at first.

    I also mostly use the soul slide. You’re terrific at it. Better than I am.
    I strongly recommend viewing the Natan Swiss Roller School videos on this He has 3 Soul Slide videos. The key concept difference is he teaches to not unweight the sliding skate. Everything else is similar. You get low, carve a ‘banana’ to the side on a deep inside edge and to start sliding by kicking out your heel. You actually lean into the sliding skate from the beginning of the move.
    Personally I tried both ways prior to seeing Nathan’s videos. But the weight bearing version made more sense to me and I stuck w it. Mike

      I think the nature of tutorials is that not every one works for every person. It's one of the reasons I even decided to do any tutorials on the channel. Some people might not get anything from my particular approach and for other people mine might be the one that finally helps them out. I think it's great that there's a variety out there for people to find! Glad to see you use this technique though, it's such a great tool! Thanks for watching and happy skating :)

    This is an excellent tutorial! I still find it hard to control speed especially on downhill sections. The T-stop isn’t very effective, neither is plough stop. The way you explained the soul slide absolutely makes more sense to me, so I’ll definitely put it into practice. Thanks!

    • @rerollinginline

    Nice video. I never have gotten the hang of this, but I guess I've been focusing more on actually having the skates perpendicular to my motion of skating. That scares me, and I am legitimately concerned that I will wipe out hard after doing it. I find myself instinctively doing what you're showing in the video, but didn't consider that to be the end of what I'm trying to do, which I think would work out a lot better.

    • @rerollinginline
      @rerollinginline  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Right, I approach this slide purely as a speed control technique. Doesn’t have to be perfect and doesn’t have to be perpendicular, though that gives more stopping power. And you can always work on starting not perpendicular and trying ti transition as you slide. Or… as you say just be happy with whatever version you’ve got working :)

    So I just pulled out my 25-30 year old Rollerblade AeroBlades. I can't believe the plastic or wheels haven't cracked. Anyway, I tried the soul slide today for the first time. I was going pretty slow. I felt a little timid about my sliding skate sticking. I'm sure I'll get better. I have no idea the hardness of my current wheels. Do you think I might need new, harder wheels to learn this properly? I'm actually planning on buying new skates soon. Great videos! Thanks! P.S. I'm 68. 😉

      I unfortunately don’t have any experience with speed skates, or how best to stop with them. I know they’ll have almost no ankle support though, if they’re the kind I’m thinking of. The skates I use are urban skates, which are better suited for this style of skating and braking. Be safe!

      Thanks! I’m not sure because I learned it rockered. Of course now that I can do it, I’ve done it flat no problem, but it doesn’t feel any different. In theory, rockered could potentially have less surface are touching the ground, which would probably make it easier.

    I love your videos! I just got into inline skating as a 41 year old! What wheel hardness do you recommend for learning slides? I'm on a Zetrablade with 80mm/82A wheels, and they feel too sticky to slide.

    • @rerollinginline
      @rerollinginline  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks and welcome to inline skating, we're happy to have you! I learned to slide on 85a wheels (some hockey, some Rollerblade Hydrogen) but I was not a beginner. I think before you learn to slide, every wheel feels too sticky. My first slides were when I started this channel because I had no idea you could even slide inline skate wheels until then.
      That being said... 82a is pretty soft for outdoor skating in general and also not ideal for sliding. I'm sure I could slide on them, but I already know how. I've heard the stock wheels on those skates aren't great in general. So I think when it's time for new wheels, you should get both something harder and better quality. The 2 wheels I can't recommend enough are Rollerblade Hydrogen and Undercover Team Blank. Both offer 80mm wheels and they're top notch quality. Hydrogen are 85a and Undercover are 86a. Undercover definitely slide easier. Even if you end up changing skates, you can always take the wheels with you if they're still good.

    Love your tutorials! So I'm revisiting this video after finally getting the hang of the powerslide (my first successful slide). Do you think I should work on this soul slide next, or is there a different one you'd recommend first? Trying to progress as easily and logically as possible, haha

    • @rerollinginline
      @rerollinginline  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Awesome to hear about your progress? I think you can start trying the soul slide after the powerslide. My one question would be - how do you powerslide? I know some tutorial teach it while fakie, and some tutorials teach you to lift your leg and place it down. I don't personally like either approach. I like to enter it facing forward, without lifting my leg. There's an example at the 4min 38sec mark of this video: th-cam.com/video/1jwoVf8JUOA/w-d-xo.html
      I'd say if you're not doing this forward-entry powerslide, to focus on that first and them start messing with soul slide. Or at the same time, honestly. As long as you're practicing in safe and controlled environments and not risking injury.

    • @brianleahyart
      @brianleahyart ปีที่แล้ว

      @@rerollinginline Wow yeah that powerslide entry looks wayyy smoother and also more controllable / safer than the way I'm currently doing it haha. (Is there a name for that method btw so I can study it more btw?) The way I'm currently doing the powerslide is by doing a small hop to 180, then once i'm riding backwards, deploy the sliding foot. The need to 180 first definitely makes this riskier at higher speeds, or on rougher terrain. I'm gonna practice your way next for sure. And will start practicing the soul slide as well. Thanks for the advice!

    • @rerollinginline
      @rerollinginline  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@brianleahyart I just call it the “forward entry powerslide”. I think most tutorials teach it they way you’re doing it and I don’t know why. I’m going to be recording a magic slide tutorial soon and one point I’m going to cover is that the forward-entry powerslide, the soul slide and the magic slide all begin the exact same way. I literally discovered the soul slide accidentally when I was about to powerslide (forward entry) but bailed after my foot already started sliding a little. That was an “aha” moment for me. Then I was doing soul slide like 10 minutes later and magic sliding confidently a few sessions later. It all came together. I also plan on doing a powerslide tutorial in which I teach the forward-entry method instead of being fakie first.

      @brianleahyart ปีที่แล้ว

      @@rerollinginline Interesting!! Looking forward to those 2 new tutorial ideas you mentioned. BTW, since you first gave me this tip a few days ago I've been practicing and I think I'm starting to get the hang of the forward entry powerslide you shared at that 4:30 mark in that vid! Still don't feel confident doing it at higher speeds yet, but it definitely is less dizzying than hopping with a 180 first, ha
