    Flint the Immortal is one of the most intriguing characters in Star Trek: The Original Series. First featured in the episode "Requiem for Methuselah," Flint is revealed to have been Alexander the Great, Leonardo da Vinci, Johannes Brahms, and others. But with many of Flint's aliases having well documented early lives, how could he have lived as such famous men from Earth's history?

    I've always wished that the writer of "Requiem for Methuselah" had also tied the Flint story into the legend of St. Germain. Who many believed was also some kind of immortal. Given all the questions that exist to this day over the possible true identity of Shakespeare it would have made just about a perfect tie in also with the Flint story.

      By the the legend of St. Germain is really. He was last sited in the 1970. And by the way he " died in 1980" I believe he faked his death. And is out there somewhere living among us.

    Pretty much ninety percent of The Highlander script came from this episode of Star Trek. Flint's immortality is pretty much the same as the immortality experienced by the immortals of the Highlander film. One can just imagine a couple of writers, eating pizza, getting stoned, and asking, "Like hey, what would happen if someone cut Flint's head off?" Wham. The Highlander is born!

    Flint is a character that reminds me a little of the character Walter Jameson in the Twilight Zone episode 'Long Live Walter Jameson', a history teacher that has lived for around 2,000 years.

  • @Mality
    @Mality 2 ปีที่แล้ว +25

    He would have to be the most influential person in history. If you remove all his alter egos from the timeline, the history of the human race would be immensely different. Even with all his "famous" identities, I would imagine most of his life was spent in relative obscurity.

    • @barrygormley3986
      @barrygormley3986 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Indeed. He was born several centuries before the invention of writing, so his "early" exploits (meaning the first 4-500 years or so) likely inspired a number of oral traditions that later evolved into the mythologies of many cultures. For a long time, he seems to have been preoccupied with power and fame (he was "a bully and a fool" after all), so it's not hard to imagine he was the historical Sargon of Akkad as well as the basis for Gilgamesh. However, he likely lived as many other kings whose reigns were more or less forgotten, and this could have made him realise the fleeting nature of both power and fame. It's also possible that when Herodotus invented the discipline of history in the 5th century BC, Flint decided it was better to space out his more notable endeavours so that people wouldn't connect the dots. Alexander the Great seems to have been his last and greatest attempt at bending the world and history to his will, as all the aliases he mentions after that point were quiet, artistic/intellectual types. It would be interesting to know what happened during his time as Alexander to inspire this change.
      All this is to say that Requiem for Methuselah barely scratches the surface, and it's a shame that to this day, the character has not been revisited in canon.

    • @irregularassassin6380
      @irregularassassin6380 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@barrygormley3986 I think he could have learned the futility of conquering. Alexander stretched a very long way and, in the end, he wasn't able to enjoy any of what he had gained. He was one of the greatest military minds of Earth's history, yet even his achievements crumbled away under the corrosive squabbling of his generals.
      But his legacy lasted as a historical figure. People remembered what he did, even if his empire was no longer there. So, perhaps Flint realized that historical legacy lasts longer than physical deed. It's a short jump in logic to conclude that dedicating oneself to art and science will have equal or greater impact on the world than any conqueror could.

    TOS was really groundbreaking. That characters such as Flint the immortal are so interesting today shows how amazing it was. But imagine how amazing it was THEN. I saw Flint the immortal when it was first aired. I remember that in this episode we found out that Spock was an excellent musician, and could sight read flawlessly (who knew!). There was almost nothing on broadcast TV like it. The only series that came close were Twilight Zone, and The Outer Limits.

In a later cartoon version, Flint would abscond a ship containing vast knowledge from the TOS series/source saving the quantity pearls from destruction and presumably never be heard of again thus preserving the Federation, Klingons, Romulans, etc. from total, mutual oblivion.

      The novel Federation came out just before Genessis. Micah Back financed Zefram Cohchrane's warp ship. It too involved a cross over between the STOS and TNG eras. It involves Zefram Cochrane and the companion. Its they who crossover between generations. Pursued by something that was or at least is a copy of one of Colnel Greens faction from the 3rd world war. Some shenanigans inside a blackhole provide the crossover point. A very serious case of monomania, and obsession lasting centuries. Zephram fled known space to get away from the villian.

    I think the only way to explain all the identities Flint assumed is to suppose that, in addition to being immortal, he also had some ability to alter his appearance that just wasn't utilised during the episode. This is also a better explanation for why he appears to be a middle-aged man (an appearance which he probably figured would go better with his new hermit persona), as Flint in the episode does not seem to realise he isn't immortal anymore: which would be kind of strange if he's been noticing his body age for the last 30 years or so.

    I think it's also important to remember that this is presuming that his memory is perfect, and that he is recollecting his past lives accurately. As a 32-year old, I've forgotten a LOT about my past, only remembering the ups and downs and the general flow, but the details are lost. I've also had to reconstruct past experiences through input from others, which have likely influenced or altered my memories. So if I could have all that happen in my comparatively short life, would Flint be immune to that? Is it possible that Flint's past identities are not entirely accurate, that he was some of the people he claimed to be but not all of them?

    • @Xylarxcode

      There is a movie from 2007 called The Man from Earth, which is also about an immortal man who has lived on Earth since the dawn of man. In this movie, he is with a group of his friends and tries to get them to accept that truth, but many are skeptical. They bombard him with questions, but the protagonist mentions that, like any other human, his memory is imperfect and he is incapable of remembering all the events from his many, many years of life.
      Just like you can't remember everything that happened in your lifetime, he can't either, the only exception being that his lifetime is vastly longer. Also unlike Flint in this video, he never claims to be anyone important from history (with one pretty major exception), and that he is just wandering from place to place as a nobody, leading normal, unremarkable lives, because he realizes that if he draws a lot of attention to himself by becoming famous, his secret is much more likely to come out.
      This episode reminds me of that movie quite a bit, but to be honest, the movie did the whole 'immortal human' story a lot better. It's much more believable (as far as immortality can be believable, at least), when you consider his flawed memory, imperfect choices and, like any human, ability to be hurt, both physically and emotionally.
      Flint is a bit too far out there to be taken seriously. Ofcourse, it's science fiction and neither one of them is real, but the concept of Flint pretending to have shaped so much of mankind's history in such important ways is just too ridiculous to be anything but a lie. Or at least, partially lied. It's an interesting concept for the Star Trek universe to explore, but they went a little too deep into cheesy territory, imo. The movie did a far better job at making me suspend my disbelief.

    I suspect you've given this a great deal more analysis than the original writers did. Like a lot of ST TOS episodes, it was tongue in cheek, a fun idea playing with history, like Who Mourns of Adonais, my favourite episode due to its secular themes. And you've right, the original series was bold, messing with the audience's heads, but in a good way, challenging false 60s prejudices and alike. May ST TOS live long and prosper. Star Trek now? Well, that's another matter. Far too dystopian.

      I doubt the writers were historical experts. Indeed, I doubt they knew much more about Flint's personas than was said on screen - just what they could quickly read up in an encyclopedia or maybe a trip to the library.
      They didn't need to know accurate facts. They needed to know entertaining narrative.

    I do know that Jerome Bixby (no relation to Bill) had long wanted to do a movie called "The Man from Earth" about an immortal that lived through human prehistory and history. His son finally got the movie made after Jerome had died. But this Star Trek episode, written by Jerome Bixby, was an early version of the story when the version he really wanted to do was considered too provocative at the time.

    Ahhh, Flint, one of my all-time favorite characters from TOS...Well, if you take the info on from the Excalibur novels, mix in the Cold Equations trilogy, with the novel Immortal Coil, then it does flesh out Flint's story admirabley...Not only did he bamboozle Dr. McCoy's medical tricorder, (a useful trick for plotting an imminent escape) so, exit Flint, enter Emil Vaslovic,

      Heck if I know but to those who say Spock's memory can handle that much information as if that was amazing Here's my take on Memory - disease, damage and like are exceptions once cast aside this is how I view memory - People do not forget the things that they truly care about. If you want to improve your memory Start by caring about thins more. A person that cares about everything Forgets Nothing. I think the Bible says that there are as many Angels in heaven as there are stars in the sky and God knows them all by their name. If you haven't experienced how much God cares you're really missing out. As far as His existence consider this -there is a set a data that goes with everything. For everything there is a set of data which among other things explains what it is comprised of , how it is formed/created, what it's function is , how it reacts with other matter. We know that Science does not create this data but rather realizes it by observation among other methods. We know we don't have all the data. We know we Never will have all the data but we Know that the data exists. The data does not require our understanding to exist. We know that we can observe, confirm , record, store , process and manipulate and apply data to do anything.
      We know that the Data proceeds the matter because that is how we design and engineer things. Space is large enough and there is enough energy to record store process and apply all the data d in the universe. We know that we can transmit and receive data via space waves such as radio, x-rays, micro. These sp[ace waves have been bathing the entire universe w/ pause for as long it's been here.
      We know we can connect the mind to an interface and control hardware and software. We know that being able to read the mind will someday be possible once we have thr correct data to do so .So if to have your data file pulled from it's storage location somewhere in space at the time of your death and have that data file you're dna genetic blue print processed and applied to an upgrade removing all negative aspects from your blueprint before re 3d printing you and placing you inside a VT that had all that you've loved and lost plus things you might or might not imagine. If all it took for this to take place is data with in your data file where you simply thought to yourself...OK I accept your invitation my sweeet Lord.....If that isn't God if this doesn't describe how He could be everywhere and know everything if being reprinted with a perfection upgrade and placed in a Negative free VR doesn't match what the Bible promises those who want it than you might be one of the many who don't go to hell they're just never reprinted. |I think this is worth consideration. No one forgets what they care about not ever. Could you for get what you care the most about? I couldn't. Which ofcorse is not true. We can't but we Want to remember with all of our heart and that's a set of data tat your file contains a simple keyword filter word search with your file would find it and that would tell the operating system data to do X, Sounds like very fckingh good news to me. I don't speak for you now do I? No I don't. You don't speak for me do you? No you don't. We don't speak for each other.

  • @nobodynobody-zy3ek

    It is generally thought that he 3rd season of TOS was not very good. However, Requium for Methusilah managed to become one of my favorite episides of TOS. I am inclined not to be too critical of inconsistances in Star Trek- especially the TOS. It was written on the fly and being a TV show and not a carefully pieced together literary work, some ideas had to end up a little sketchy from time to time. In later books Flint is depicted as having deceived McCoy and still being immortal has further adventures in the Star Trek Universe. Having lived 6000 years and by that time probably having an intellect as big as a planet (homage), it would almost inconceivable he would make the error of leaving Earth and not noticing what was happening to him. I suppose you could flip it and assume maybe he just got tired of living- which is also understandable, but if he was designing an immortal mate, it does not make sense that he would plan to make her a widow. One other thought, if one human accidently becomes immortal, it could very well be possible there are others, including Flint's offsprings- and after 6000 years , he must have had a lot of offsprings. The shadow that hangs over all of this is that humanity may find a way to survive climate change and the 3rd World War, however it seems to be very unlikely. It would be interesting if the ideals of Star Trek will sustain us for the long term, until we reach the stars, or just in the short term where humanity dies in the dust. Good luck to us all.

    I know this is off topic, but I've been wanting to present this query to you.
    Much has been made about the similarities between the episode "The Changeling" and "Star Trek The Motion Picture", or more specifically, the back stories of Nomad and V'ger.
    Question: could the probe "Tonrue" which Nomad encountered and actually replaced Nomad, have come from the same living machine civilization that built the V'ger probe ship? When considering the power and sophistication of the the alien probe posing as Nomad; that this little 1 meter tall machine could destroy all the life on four planets and sweep aside a mighty Constitution class with little effort had me pondering this. What do you think?

    I feel the simplest explanation about historical figures with well documents pasts and childhoods is Flint was always one of historians establishing and writing their histories.
    Don't forget up till that first printing press was invented human history was patch work of Chinese whispers and propaganda of wealth elite that could actually read and write and afford to own books.
    All Flint had to do was wait three or four generations after the death of one of his famous identities and just started saying the history he wanted the masses to believe loudly enough and often enough and in theory their would no one around to contradict him and he'd be one of few with education to write the books everyone reference. Don't forget since we don't have time travel and can't go back in time to verify most of our history book, their no way to tell if we in real work even know the real truths about historical facts beyond several creditable archaeological digs, lots of guess work and taking the writer of ancient historical books at their word and assume they weren't lying to glorify their past.
    That's my theory any.
    Flint is good story, a great character with great potential but they made him a bit too powerful for my taste with him being able to shrink the Enterprise 1701 to fit on desk. But personal I think the 2007 movie 'The Man from Earth' did the story better, I highly recommend it, Star Trek Enterprise actor John Billingsley AKA Doctor Phlox was in it along with Candyman's Tony Todd how also played Worf's brother Kurn and adult Jack Sisko in DS9 episode 'The Visitor'.

    Interesting explanation. I only question one, your first. He says he was very foolish as Akharin, a Mesopotamian warrior who was killed in battle, "but didn't die". A very foolish Mesopotamian warrior would not likely live to the age of 30. He was more likely 20, or a little older. Actually, it was more likely younger than 20. Therefore he very quickly learned to look 30ish as this age is viewed by most acient societies as "a good age" when a man is still strong, and also wise by experience.
