Newark actually has better public transit connections to Manhattan than the other two. The only thing that might change would be if any airlines book cross-city connections between these 3.
I live in NJ, and have flown out of EWR a few times. My overall experience seemed like any other airport; neither especially bad nor especially good. I found it easier to park at Newark-Liberty than at the other two local major airports, however.
As someone who has never used EWR but has used both LGA and JFK, EWR almost seems like a hybrid of the other two Big like JFK but with mostly domestic flights like LGA (other than United’s international services)
I’ve flown through all 3, for international flights JFK is undisputed and my preferred option. However on a few occasions I’ve used JFK for departure and Newark for arrival and vice versa. Getting to Newark from the outer boroughs (mainly Brooklyn and Queens) is more of a headache.
Back in 96, we flew into Newark from Frankfurt on a family holiday to the US. After landing there we had to transit over to JFK to wait for our luggage which was put on another flight as it had been left behind on our flight. Lufthansa paid for our taxi over to JFK because of the mess up.
I lived in Halifax about 10 years ago. I fly back to China once a year to visit my family, I love changing flight in NYC. I enjoy flying into EWR in the morning, explore the city for a day and leave JFK in the evening. NYC is my favourite city in the world so I really enjoy this free NYC day trip.
Not sure who lobbied for this, but the gist of it is that only will ticket changes within "NYC" change, but also pricing. So When changing from a LGA to EWR flight, you will be stuck paying greater fare difference. Since EWR is star alliance ( United and friends) and JFK is everyone else, I suspect it was "everyone else" who lobbied to exlcude United from "New York". The changes to make EWR less competitive will be gradual over a few years. Air Canada fare rules still treat all 3 airport the same. (though they only serve LGA and EWR). I beleive NYC also includes HPN (Westchester county airport).
It didn't come from the 3 airports, all 3 are owned and operated by the Port Authority of New York/ New Jersey. I tend to believe what Nelson said, maybe Lufthansa or a group of other airlines.
Thank God, We finally get our Jersey Airport back. I can now relax and enjoy my Taylor Ham Egg and cheese sandwich while plane spotting from IKEA. Taylor Ham for Life.
I grew up in Montclair, NJ and Newark, NJ. EWR was always my choice of airport to depart from due to the close proximity and ease of parking. I have flown in and out of all three aforementioned airports, and I've flown in and out of KHPN - Westchester County Airport/White Plains.
Knowing how those things are managed in the US, most likely, the airlines will take this opportunity to charge extra fees for airport change, plus tax and tips that are not frowned upon either.
I am from New York, so I have flown in and out of all three many times. JFK is my favorite. Easiest access and good road links especially inside the airport.
Flew to JFK in Febuary and departed from EWR on the same trip. It was just bookable, as it was the same airport, with a little note on the bookingpage...
Flown through all of these airports and try to avoid connections in all of them but sometimes unavoidable as JFK is a major international hub and can go direct to a lot of other destinations that you can’t from other east coast airports.
I have always tried to avoid JFK at all costs. I also ask relatives to try to arrange flights into Newark Liberty for ease of commute. Living in Jersey, it's a 3 to 4 hour ride to JFK on a good day - but there is seldom a good day without traffic! I'm sure New Yorkers feel the same way about travelling to EWR. Just be careful when making flight arrangements, as you might inadvertently choose a New York airport when you want Newark, NJ. Review flight details before booking!
I have flown into and out of all 3. I also had to catch a cab from KJFK to KLGA for a flight with delta that was delayed due to mechanical issues. That was a hassle and a $45 cab ride. I honestly hate flying into or out of KEWR due to the smell of the refineries that you an see on takeoff or touchdowns. It is one of the main reasons why I always fly into KLGA or KJFK when flying back home.
Having flown through all 3 airports, I would consider EWR to be the best (or least bad) option. Since it is the closest airport to midtown Manhattan, the decision to de-list EWR from NYC is perplexing to say the least.

I live at the Jersey shore, so EWR is by far the easiest for us. It’s an okay airport, the worst part is terminal A where after security you are stuck in a small waiting area. Luckily they are getting a new terminal to replace it!!!
Newark always comes up most convenient, but maybe because I live in a smaller European city. If you're flying between NYC and the major capitals JFK may be the place. I don't know what La Guardia is for.
i live within 10 minutes of newark airport and work there but sometimes find flights are cheaper from jfk but its not worth the hassle of getting there not driving
How ironic, I just got back from a trip to NYC a couple days ago. As much as I really wanted to fly out of JFK to see all the big and numerous planes, it was just too expensive and my family had to choose LGA. It was a nice airport though with all the renovations!
I’ve flown to only one of the airports NY’s LaGuardia Airport (LGA) but I’ve seen the runway view at New York Kennedy Airport (JFK) from the rooftop pool & observation bar at the TWA HOTEL located at JFK!
I have flown through all of the nyc airports and I hate to say it but Newark is probably the best, though still terrible. Depending on the price the best option is flying into Philadelphia and taking the train to NYC which is only around 90 minutes. Philly international is far better
I live in northern Ocean County, NJ. If I fly to Florida I use Atlantic City. I have used all 3 NY airports and Philadelphia. Only one I like is Atlantic City. small, cheaper parking. Only downside is Spirit, and usually cheaper than the other airports.
I live in NY. And have flown to all 3. I hate flying to EWR for the mere fact that it is expensive to get there for me. JFK and LGA are both 20 mins from me. EWR is 50. JFK and LGA is free to get to, I generally get driven or Ubered. But if I go to EWR there will be 2 expensive tolls, tolls that I can’t avoid, both averaging over $15. So it may not be worth it for me.
I have never flown out of Newark but I have flown out of JFK and LGA numerous times. I understand that Newark is United’s big hub but I don’t fly on United which is probably the reason that I have not flown out of EWR.
Now's a great time to be on the City of Newark's Tourism board. Millions of passengers a year coming in from all over the world to see the beautiful city of Newark lol.
On one trip, I flew into JFK but stayed in NJ, and getting from one to the other. I've flown out of Newark. Fortunately I didn't have to transit between them, which would be awful, I think.
The IATA can do as they like. The real question is, what do people in NYC do? They use the airport. So call it a NY airport or not, it is still going to be a NY airport to those who live in the NY area. This is an academic question more than anything else that no person is going to really care about it unless it affects transferring between flights between airports because of cancelation. If the airlines change their rules and make it cost to change between airports when going and returning, then passengers will be mad.
Been through all three over the years. Don't care for any of them. The rail connection at EWR was a mild improvement. I'd still rather use a smaller regional airport. It's a bizarre feeling to stand at the check-in, look over your shoulder out the front door and see your car where you've parked it.
The IATA name changes won't alter the clogged airspace for the 3 airports. Fly early in the day or just round your shoulders and negotiate the flight delays later in the day.
For Me I Love Flying through JFK Airport on JetBlue Airways however Newark I Hoped to try next also I heard there upgrading both LaGuardia Airport & Newark Liberty Airport so more space.
I think everyone from the NY, NJ, CT area does it a different way. Getting everyone to agree on the "best" way is not realistic. Some people land at KALB, KSFW, KHPN, or KPHL and use the train or a hire car to make it to their eventual destination or connection. It's a game and in the end it's down to the consumer to figure it out. Local knowledge is your best friend. Personally, I like HPN & SWF.
Used JFK and EWR internationally and JFK was better in my view. Passenger handling in EWR was gruesome, with only two immigration booths to welcome something like 4 or 5 international flights, meaning a two hour wait in my case. Security and boarding was also tough.
I've flown through JFK twice. Once in 1991 on one of the last PANAM flights, where we had to spend 2 hours for immigration while one agent was constantly calling out 'Next... next, please... next'. And the second time was in 2007 with Delta to take a domestic flight to Syracuse. Airports are never my most fun spots to be in, more a necessary evil for international travel.
I always prefer going from EWR airport over JFK and Laguardia Airport. I've ever flown anywhere from Laguardia Airport. I used EWR and JFK. But prefer EWR as it's like a little over 25 mins from my house whereas JFK is like an hour away.
Yes it’s because of the proximity of LaGuardia and JFK they have similar systems where they turn immediately to avoid overflying the other airports and the landing and taking off aircraft
You’re correct, but you’re talking about air traffic. The video is talking about ticketing and connections. As a retired controller, I can guarantee you the FAA still considers Newark as a NYC airport for traffic purposes.

Flown into and out of EWR and JFK several times. EWR's immigration procedure is a nightmare compared to JFK. The irony of all this is that EWR is physically closer to New York than JFK... at the moment it won't make a jot of difference to me.
Newark Airport is actually easier to get to Midtown Manhattan than the other two if you are using public transportation. The least convenient to me is JFK... unless you are driving yourself or just taking a cab or ride share. All NYC airports are not near the city center, its why Amtrak trains are often a better choice in the Northeast for commutes from Washington DC, Boston and certainly from Philadelphia.
Let's face it. EWR was *always* in NJ. So what could possibly change? G-d forgive me, sometimes our American cousins' geography isn't the greatest - but how many are going to be wondering - how did they move Newark to New Jersey without anyone noticing? 🤷
This is common to several airports in different countries. Newark, while in NJ is in the New York Metro area. I live in NJ, I know some people have this irrational feeling that it shouldn't be a NYC airport. To yell you the truth, I don't care what the IATA calls it, as long as it doesn't change fares, connection flights etc... Even though you're wrong I do forgive you.
I’ve always found Newark to be my least preferred airport. You’re always sitting on the ground for a long time waiting to get in the air. New Jersey is just the Mississippi of the north.
Yes, thank you for sharing. I been recently hearing this situation about New York, and I continue to hope this change will not affect many travelers. I have used two of the airports there in New York which are LaGuardia and Newark. Both airports were fine in my travels.
Flew into JFK in 2017 with Delta, it was quite confusing especially with ground transport. But I'm flying into Newark next month, lets see if that's any better
Used all 3...domestic flights, LGA is best....JFK good for intl. Never did use ewr for intl....only domestic...wasn't good or bad...was just ok...that's my two cents.
LaGuardia is one of the worst airports, period...I have flown through there a couple of times from Canada and it is so small, cramped, run down and not many transport connections.
I'm 1k on United. I'm very familiar with EWR, all the way back to the Continental days. I used LGA more when USAirways was still around. JFK I've only been through a few times. EWR seems to be the easiest to/from Manhattan because of the train. But west coast based now, so this limits how frequently I end up in EWR in general.
I didn't know that. Coincidentally, I watched a video of an Aer Lingus flight from Newark to Dublin this morning. It was on an Airbus A321. I also saw an ad for Aer Lingus about upgrading their short haul fleet with A320 neos.
As a former long time West Side Manhattan resident, I've flown from all three airports both domestic and international on numerous occasions. EWR far and away was my airport of choice. From the the West Side of Manhattan it was almost always a half an hour or less to get to EWR by bus. I used EWR for both domestic and international flights and at the time found the airport convenient and easy to use. LGA was a necessary evil on many occasions when taking the shuttle to DCA. Kennedy was avoided at all costs because it would take so long to get there by any form of transportation save helicopter. Also JFK is immense, which is not a postive attribute.
all of them. JFK is highly terminal dependent, terminal 7 is an absolute dump. new Laguardia is much better, but only domestic. Newark is way easier imo if you live in Manhattan
Newark actually has better public transit connections to Manhattan than the other two. The only thing that might change would be if any airlines book cross-city connections between these 3.

The least convenient to me is JFK... unless you are driving yourself or just taking a cab or ride share. All NYC airports are not near the city center, its why Amtrak trains are often a better choice in the Northeast for commutes from Washington DC, Boston and certainly from Philadelphia.
EWR is the one I try hardest to avoid
Let's face it. EWR was *always* in NJ. So what could possibly change?
G-d forgive me, sometimes our American cousins' geography isn't the greatest - but how many are going to be wondering - how did they move Newark to New Jersey without anyone noticing? 🤷
Its always been in NJ
This is common to several airports in different countries. Newark, while in NJ is in the New York Metro area. I live in NJ, I know some people have this irrational feeling that it shouldn't be a NYC airport. To yell you the truth, I don't care what the IATA calls it, as long as it doesn't change fares, connection flights etc... Even though you're wrong I do forgive you.
I've flown from both JFK and EWR from London
How come it was under New York!!!
I’ve always found Newark to be my least preferred airport. You’re always sitting on the ground for a long time waiting to get in the air. New Jersey is just the Mississippi of the north.
IATA should never let an airport hold a city's name if it's not close enough to it.
Who really cares unless it lowers your flight cost.
Yes, thank you for sharing. I been recently hearing this situation about New York, and I continue to hope this change will not affect many travelers. I have used two of the airports there in New York which are LaGuardia and Newark. Both airports were fine in my travels.
I have, unfortunately, flown in and out of all three NY airports. All terrible.
This stinks of taxes and fee applied to the airlines by the city and state of NY. New Jersey probably push this..
I have fly out all the airport in nyc But I like New Jersey better cause it’s faster to get into New York then going to JFK
With online gambling legal in new Jersey doesn't that mean travellers can gamble on the airport WiFi now?
Done a few flights through JFK and 1 through Newark, personally prefer JFK
Long island MacArthur is the way to go
I have flown to and from EWR and LGA. Not JFK yet.
Great! Now no one has to suffer to the worlds worst airline 😊
I still like Newark it’s more convenient by nj transit and myself and my family are star alliance members
I didn't know that. Coincidentally, I watched a video of an Aer Lingus flight from Newark to Dublin this morning. It was on an Airbus A321. I also saw an ad for Aer Lingus about upgrading their short haul fleet with A320 neos.
tl;dw, No
As a former long time West Side Manhattan resident, I've flown from all three airports both domestic and international on numerous occasions.
Been to LGA only once. It sucked!!
Born and raised in NYC and I can tell you people here hate EWR
I've had nothing but horrible experiences at Newark and won't use it unless there are absolutely no options out of JFK or LaGuardia.
3 of the worst airports I've ever been to, particularly Newark
all of them. JFK is highly terminal dependent, terminal 7 is an absolute dump. new Laguardia is much better, but only domestic. Newark is way easier imo if you live in Manhattan
Newd a forth airport in new York long term
