You should look at the BEFORE and after of New Orleans Armstrong Airport, where they basically built a new terminal building across the tarmac and made a beautiful airport
You should visit banglore airport sometime.
Doubtful it makes the most beautiful list IN THE WORLD, but you should check into the Pittsburgh International Airport. It's history is more important to aviation, and airports in general WORLDWIDE than most people know. Also, it is close to being done with an impressive near complete remodel while it still remained open. Cheers to the continued success! 😉😉

I mean... if only they used pretty shiny metal finishes in the rest of the country. Usually aesthethics aren't much of a concern and even large projects looks fairly utilitarian.
@@Life_Kyle They're from local timber farms. That's pretty much what Oregon and Washington specializes in is timber farming. Areas that are cut down are re-planted and cut down in 40-70 years. It's a relatively sustainable process. Aside from state and national forests, most all our forests are timber farms.
Cool to see this covered by B1M! I am the Project Engineer who worked on the phase 1 flooring and it was an exciting process to get the Iconic Teal carpet back into the airport. Proud to be a part of this project!

Hey nice to see you here! I'm an employee at the airport and even after a few months it's still breathtaking to spend my shift looking at the new main terminal!
i’m a portland native and what suprised me most about the airport was the noise level being so much lower and the amazing restaurants that were chosen to populate the terminal!
Maybe they should’ve build affordable housing and populated all the homeless inside

Flight attendant here! This video came at the perfect time; I literally JUST laid over in Portland 2 days ago! It was my first time in the new terminal and my jaw literally dropped. The old terminal was such a dump; it was not a particularly pleasant experience. But I was utterly in awe of the new one. It’s MASSIVE. Way bigger than this video could possibly convey. And it smells good, and feels peaceful. The restaurants are great, the lines move quickly, and Portland las a law that requires restaurants in the airport to keep the prices identical to those found outside the airport, so everything is reasonable. You don’t get those stereotypical “airport prices” that you find everywhere else. it’s incredible. I cannot overstate how pleasant the experience was. I look forward to passing through Portland more often :)

Hi Josiah, random question. I was wondering how you get into playing piano at PDX? I am a pianist as well and have been curious about the process. I found and filled out a form online but it didn’t seem to bear any results.
@ If you filled out the form, you should be good to go! I heard they’ll be running their next round of auditions sometime in the first half of 2025.
I filled out the form in 2018 and didn’t hear anything until 2022. It’s a pretty full program and it all depends on when they need new musicians. Some people have been in the program over 25 years.
Practice up, have at least 2-3 hours of music to play, and 2 or 3 of your best songs for the audition. :)

@@LunaticTheCat No, the music program is all volunteer. But they provide a wonderful platform for us to connect with people. They treat us very well. 😊

Gotta say I do really like the sweeping, flowing lines of wood slats. Gives the terminal a character differentiating from all other airports, and looks like a comfortable place to spend time in.
In the Netherlands this style was very common in the 80's, places like theaters, libraries and my local mall used to look like this, it even had those Y pillars. To me it feels very outdated
Ya I heard that the philosophy is to be a destination for locals to come and eat and hang out. It really is beautiful. I was through there a few months ago and indeed people were just lounging. I think many of them weren’t even traveling. It was nice.
I’ve been there a few times since it’s opened and it really is a relaxed space. I’m used to airports being crowded, noisy and uncomfortable. I never really considered what the alternative could be. Flying out of PDX and into ORD, ATL, or DFW really contrasts good airport design vs. bad.
This is the largest mass timber project ever built, in the world. I seriously doubt the Netherlands had mass timber multi-hectare floating roof structures for your malls in the 80s. With rain forests in them.

As a Swede, I am proud that a Swedish company has been involved in the construction. You should be proud of the airport in Portland, it is beautiful

Americans designed it and others build it, it's our history!
I live in Portland, and as soon as the airport opened up, I immediately went to visit it. It's absolutely amazing, and the size is not done it's justice on footage.
We even had a "test opening" haha. Portland needed this after everything we've been going through lately

I work for the Port of Portland and can say that seeing our community's reaction and the excitement from all corners of the world has been incredible. I think it's such a great ambassador for visitors as well as a place Oregonians can be proud of. When Phase 2 is complete late next year, things will be even better.
I'm from pdx and have put up with the endless construction for 6 years. I literally CRIED tears of JOY and delight when I descended the escalator from the parking lot into the main lobby. my immediate reaction was "they really RAISED the roof! " the wood is gorgeous, the trees are cheery. the bleachers to sit in to wait for arriving loved ones.... all made me smile and proud to be a portlander AND an Oregonian! can't wait for the WHOLE thing to be done!

I flew into PDX back in May while they were still under construction, and again in September, and it's actually breathtaking when you first walk out into the atrium. It's the first airport I've been to where it actually felt nice and relaxing to just sit down and enjoy the vibe for a while.
Not as breathtaking as walking by homeless junkies and RV residences
I flew into Portland for work in September and I let out an audible "wow" when I walked into the new terminal. Literally stood still in the middle to gawk at all of the beautiful wood, it felt like I was standing in a park. Absolutely beautiful!
I’ve been a part of this project since day one. I have such a great sense of pride in being involved in such an incredible job for the Pacific Northwest and love that it will touch so many more lives than those of our locals. What an honor it has been to be on the team that brought this to fruition.
Also the shops inside PDX don't mark-up prices, so everything is very reasonable
Yes, and there's no sales tax in Oregon, so right off the bat you're saving anywhere from ~6 to 10% (depending on your home state) off the price of clothing, gifts, whatnot. And yes, I think it bears repeating because some people find it hard to believe, but even the restaurants and coffee shops charge the exact same prices in the airport as they do outside.
Right, because the little sign on the counter says that to make you feel better.

@@wyldhowl2821 As a resident of the area, it's a bit steep but fair as airport parking goes. It helps that the city's light rail network has a station at the airport that also got a renovation recently as well, so not everyone has to park there
@@wyldhowl2821 why wouldn’t you just take SkyTrain? Airport parking rates are one of the biggest scams everywhere, I always take transit if it’s an option, or a rideshare.
As a Portlander for the last 25 years, I was proud to see our new airport showcased here on the B1M. I have been a fan of the B1M for quite some time. PDX, what our airport is named, is a shining example of sustainable building, and should serve as a blueprint for others to follow. Thanks to the B1M for showcasing our new terminal!

I work for one of the electrical contractors that helped build the new roof, so proud to make my state even more beautiful than it already was.
I grew up in Portland and have lived here off and on throughout my life. I'm very familiar with PDX. This year, I made a trip in April and another in August and the difference was astonishing to me. When I stepped into it in August I was absolutely blown away. It almost felt like a dream. I couldn't believe that much had changed in just a few months. It's truly stunning! I look forward to seeing it fully finished.

@1975brett When you get back to PDX people take pics of the iconic carpet and their feet. Kind of like a "I am back on solid ground in PDX" homage.
As a Portlander and occasional flyer during the construction, I thought the contractor did a great job of making the temporary passageways fairly easy to navigate. There was always excitement for what was going on behind those temporary walls.
You didn't mention the llama that is on site to help calm nervous fliers. We fly out of PDX often and this spring we navigated the maze of construction we have been accustomed to but in August we had the pleasure of experiencing the new remodel and it really is stunning. Congrat's to the whole team.

The llama isn't there every day. You are more likely to run into the therapy dogs.

The llama was such a nice surprise when we flew back from our cruise last year. It was December so it was a Christmas llama.
@@jakegolding8388Therapy llamas and alpacas are brought to PDX a few times a week and, yes, they are taken by their handlers up and down the concourses, where passengers line up for pictures with them. It’s really cool to see kids and kids-at-heart go crazy about them. They’re dressed up for Christmas this time of year.🎄

I'm literally crying with joy watching this! I've enjoyed your series for years, and as a Portland resident for the last 18 years, I'm so honored that our very own PDX Airport has been chosen as your project of focus for this video! It's no joke about our airport carpet - locals threw an ABSOLUTE FIT when they removed it a decade or so ago, and the SIMILAR BUT NOT EXACT replacement was apparently an unsatisfactory resolution. Part of what makes this project so satisfying (and I can attest, from my latest visit for a flight to Las Vegas) is that not only does it embody the Pacific Northwest spirit so perfectly but our beloved 80's-pattern carpet is making a comeback! Yes, it is TOTALLY A THING to take pictures of our shoes with that carpet underfoot as we are preparing to board outbound flights. I've done it myself over and bloody over! Thank you, thank you, thank you for this astonishing acknowledgment. Even as a local, I had no idea of the complexity involved in making that beautiful timber roof a reality. Love you!!!
Living just outside of Portland, I've flown from the new terminal a couple of times already since it opened, and just last Monday I met my wife there when she returned from a trip to Vietnam. I was able to use your wide shot of the gate exit area to show her where i was hiding so i could sneak up behind her with flowers 😅 Like my wife, the new PDX really is beautiful.

As a New Yorker I thought our newly rebuilt LaGuardia Airport was the best looking but PDX looks freaking gorgeous; a winner for sure!
I agree LGA is beautiful. Also we don’t need extremely beautiful airports lol I think most people who go there just want to get to their destinations as swiftly and safely as possible. I am saying this as someone who enjoys beautiful airports.
LGA isn’t all that great. You would think NY would have the most exquisite airport in the world. Not even close. Utah has a better airport.
@@zeeqq105You'll notice most of the "beautiful" airports were built or rebuilt recently. We have had fully developed air infrastructure long before any other nation. We're just too practical to throw insane money at an airport just to make to beautiful. While I enjoy traveling to showpiece airports as much as the next guy, it's really impractical financially.
@@samia6888 I guess it depends on how many hours you have to spend in any given airport. I wouldn't mind lingering a couple of hours at PDX.. I wouldn't want it to stretch into 15 hours though.. The nicer the airport, the less of a hurry to get out..
@@MarinCipollina I just know one thing, when I get to my destination (whether it is to or from) I am in a hurry to get to a hotel or my home lol I never spend browsing unless it is right before my flight and near the terminal. Also everything there is expensive 😭I get there 3 hours prior so with the checking bagging and all the TSA stuff I have like an hour to spend before boarding.

The security checkpoint was really the most impressive part to me, it’s incredibly well designed, very smooth and fast to get people through. I’ve never seen anything like it at any other airport
In mid August, I flew out of PDX, in the midst of the construction and mess, and only a week later came back and literally thought our plane had landed at the wrong airport. I did not recognize anything. I was so blown away by the beauty of it. Had another trip in November and purposely gave myself plenty of time before my departure just so I could wander around and see more of it. Looking forward to its overall completion. ❤
This happened to me, too! Flew in August and again in September-the difference was astounding! Loooove the trees and nature sounds!
I fly through PDX regularly, and have been quite a few times since the first stage of work completed. It has become a really beautiful place, truly a destination in its own right. The tall vaulted wood ceilings are really grand. I also love the new waiting for arrivals area, there are these huge steps for sitting, and it is constantly filled with joyous scenes. And all the indoor greenery is lovely too, lots of ferns and trees. TSA is particularly fast now, and has been modernized. I could go on about all the improvements, really an upgrade on an already great airport.
I was very impressed with how fast the TSA was. It flowed very smoothly, and was just all around easier with the added automation of the tray system.
Unfortunately I think they are going to move the arrivals exit when construction is done (if that hasn’t happened already) so those huge bleacher-like steps won’t be where arriving passengers come out. Too bad, I thought it was a great place to wait! But maybe not practical as you would have to quickly get down the steps and around other people when you saw the person you were waiting for.
The baggage handling through security is remarkably efficient. I was flabbergasted when I used the airport in August.
@@SashazurThe concourse exits are going to be moving to the sides when the project is done - there will be waiting areas there as well.

As a Native Portlander, i am Proud of all the Work that went Into PDX Terminal.
When I first walked into our new airport, I was completely blown away. A+
I live here in Portland and have had the chance to see this several times since opening. It's stunning, to say the least. It reminded me of being in airports in Europe and Asia with how open it is. The new ticketing areas are great and have plenty of space. Tons of light in and around the new terminal. You can walk up to the greeting area and wait on the new gallery seating for people watching or head upstairs for a drink and have the ability to watch planes coming and going from the alley, or take off/land depending on how the winds are at that time. It's truly amazing and they've done a really great job.
As a pilot in Portland, PDX always had a homey but old feel. I definitely preferred it to most other airports, but it did need some life breathed into.
It has been years in the making now, with the airport for the past 3 years being a frankenstein of temporary structures and hallways.
This new terminal is jaw dropping, the employees love it, and they're not done yet. There's still lots more to come.
I was up flying in the local area today, and the airport definitely fits the feel of this beautiful region.

As someone who lives in the Portland metro and has flown multiple times. This past year when we went through the airport it felt like a whole new place. Much smoother process this time around. Glad to see people are recognizing the great work that was done
I just flew to Portland for a friend’s wedding at the beginning of November. It was absolutely stunning and serene. I felt so at peace after my flight walking through the airport. My favorite airport so far

For the longest time, I've only seen PDX with giant walls of white, fencing off construction areas. So when I drop my sister off yesterday, I can't help but gawk at what's now behind those glass plates outside.
I love the warmth of the wood - very welcoming and inviting.
Not just the warmth but the aroma!
My wife was a volunteer to run TSA tests for this terminal before it was open. It is absolutely beautiful. PDX is honestly one of the best airports in the US. Fast TSA and easy to get around.

@@nuevision8Screening around the country is essentially the same - just how is every airport in the US different? PDX just happens to now have the latest TSA screening system. Not every airport is equipped for handle the new technology.

As a Portland native, I'm proud of our shiny new aitport, especially the focus on sustainability. It's truly like being in an indoor park. The live trees really set the mood and feel so very Orrgon.

I live in Portland, and the new terminal building is fantastic! I actually hate the airport experience, and so it raises my stress and anxiety levels, but I was excited to see the new terminal building. When I went inside, all that stress and anxiety melted away...the space feels so warm and comforting, especially with all the trees and plants. Normally I don't like modern architecture because all the white and steel feels so cold and sterile, but this new terminal building with its natural timber everywhere...it's really nice and it looks futuristic. TSA was also more efficient too, which was a positive surprise.
I love PDX! It's my home airport. So nice to have a beautiful "welcome" for travelers. Thanks, B1M for this well-done video!

I was a PDX in September, it looks amazing. At my last job we where working panels and whatnot for the PDX project. Did a lot of sanding, filling and coating. Its an odd feeling knowing that I contributed to something like this. If you're reading this Mike, stay awesome.
As soon as you mentioned a beautiful American airport, I immediately thought of PDX. I'm biased - its my home airport - but walking in after the roof had been installed was breathtaking. I'd flown out of PDX many years before the renovations and the many years during the renovations, and had gotten very accustomed to how plain it looked to start then how sad it looked during work. Walking in after the reveal was such a pleasant surprise and I was so proud at how beautiful we made it.
And remember, it isn’t a renovation but newly built from the ground up to the massive roof. The terminal core was also extended 250 feet to the west, which is why the hall is so spacious.
Washington Dulles was pretty cutting edge in it's day, and it still holds up as a really cool place to be with modern conveniences like a rail between gates, and loads of shopping, and displays to keep you busy.
Eero Saarinen's headhouse at Dulles is an all-time classic. The airport is let down by other issues - the "temporary" United concourse, for instance, and the insane decision to build the metro across the parking lot rather than run it under or immediately beside the headhouse. The US will do anything, absolutely anything, to screw up public transportation. Spend all that money to get the metro out to Dulles, just to have it stop uselessly far from the terminal.
But Saarinen's terminal is still a classic.

Does Dulles still use the lift lounges to board aircraft?

As a commercial airline pilot in the US, PDX was my favorite airport to operate out of and thru. It was very nice, pretty and easy (from a pilots perspective) before this project. Now it is absolutely stunning! If only my employer would make it a base. I’d transfer out of DEN post haste. DEN is my least favorite airport in the US. It’s been mismanaged since it opened.
Portland ATC are also really nice. Free touch and go’s make for some good fun and sightseeing over downtown when friends visit.
DEN, one of the few airports that by the time you line up on the runway for takeoff, you are half-way to your destination
Really do miss the Denver Stapleton Airport. Even if I was occasionally snowed in there. Not a DIA fan.... ಠಿ_ಠ
I’m gonna assume that you fly for the same airline I (an FA) do, since you mentioned being based in DEN 😂 I’m based in EWR. We used to have SEA for FA’s back in the day. I would kill for a northwestern base again. Absolutely beautiful part of the country. West coast beauty without the insanity that is Cali living.

I was just there in October and definitely noticed how beautiful it was right away. A stark contrast from other airports around this country. Amazing to see how much effort went in to renovating this place

As a Finn, yeah the whole project seems very Nordic.
I'm a 4th generation Oregonian and both sides of the family are Scandinavian heritage. Quite a few of us here, as Oregon was a popular destination due to our vast forests. When I first saw the new terminal my first thought was "Wow... it looks like something the Swedes would have built!".
Saarinen’s incredible and evocative main terminal at Dulles made me fall in love with airports on my first flight ever at the age of 16. The new PDX looks amazing, but so does the main terminal at Dulles 62 years on!
Visiting the TWA Hotel at JFK is a treat - they restored it beautifully -if you haven't seen it yet, I hope you get to do so soon!
What great design can do is profound; it is truly “Frozen Music” and it enriches the soul of the community and all who pass through it.
I was going to say, the USA has lots of architecturally significant airports. The TWA Flight Center at JFK, the Saarinen terminal at IAD, Terminal 1 at DCA, the Theme Building at LAX, the iconic roofline at DEN.
Yes, these are mostly old, but some newer airports like RDU, DTW and MSY are remarkable.
Saarinen's terminal at JFK was my introduction to truly awe inspiring architecture as I made my first flight overseas.

Lifelong Portlander here and the new terminal is stunning! I had TSA pre check and got right in so I spent my extra time marveling at the work and design. We in Portland have always been proud of our airport and it shows.
Fantastic work! Architect really showed what can happen when you really want to build something that looks good and great. We architects and engineers have been doing it . God bless us all!😊

I was in Portland 2 weeks ago, the airport is spectacular, beautiful and functional, built inside with local timber and local products like Voodoo donuts.

Pdx has been under construction for so long, when I saw what they were building for the first time my jaw dropped. I’m from Portland, good to see recognition!!
I don't live in Portland anymore, but having grown up there, I will always take pride in it's achievements. PDX has always been the best airport in America in terms of flight logistics. It's cool to see it level up it's aesthetics as well.
Stopped at that airport on my trip a few months ago. It was incredible
The new PDX has knocked it out of the park - it is a stunning facility and wholly authentic to the city it serves.
As a Portlander, I can say it truly is a very beautiful airport. We've been under construction for years and I first took a flight out last October and was blown away. So proud our local airport is this masterpiece.

This looks very Scandanavian, and I mean that as a high compliment. The use of organic materials like wood, the slatted panels, the focus on light, the mix of minimalism and genuine cozy warmth--it's all very chic in a Norway kind of way.
Europe approves this! Truly beautiful and impressive airport! Love the use of timber!

Being a resident of Portland this airport renovation is amazing. The sound is absorbed by the timber and its so relaxing. We even having a piano and therapy llama.
Thank you for that background video. The result is indeed splendid. I've been going to PDX for 30 years and almost fell over when I saw the new terminal for the first time. What an amazing planning and construction accomplishment. Hats off to all who contributed.

I’ve flown to pdx twice a year for the last 19 years, seeing the progress is insane I don’t think people realize how outdated it was

I think most people underestimate just how big of a change a little bit of greenery or natural elements can have in a building. Every city I’ve been to that has a lot of trees and plants growing next to pathways and such have made a pretty big impression on me, whereas I think that cities with a lot of grey and monotone colors just seem depressing and too industrial. Thank you for covering this topic, it was really quite interesting!
This style must be the in thing in construction right now. Pittsburgh International airport is currently building a new terminal with similar wood ceilings, structural tree columns, and inside landscaping, albeit on a smaller scale.
Having natural elements in construction is becoming more popular. I work for a construction company in the SE and we get more and more requests for exposed wood elements such as trim, columns, and ceilings.

This airport looks so beautiful. It looks so much similar to Bangalore international airport terminal 2 which is made out of bamboo.
I was thinking the same thing, except that the BLR airport has a Tim Hortons, Pf Chang's, KFC and even a Buffalo Wild Wings (LoL)
It is a wonderful airport. Designed by Chicago's SOM architects and built by L&T. Changi was designed by Boston's Safde architects, so a little different but aame principles of earthy tones and green spaces.
T2 BLR doesn't get enough attention. One of the world's premier airports.

DCA/Reagan’s main terminal is pretty stunning inside. I feel like it deserves a shout out. It is also an extremely well designed and functional airport. Front door to gate takes ~ 10 min with precheck.
I live in Portland and every time I go inside PDX I’m in awe.

My city and my airport!
People who live in their echo chambers and buy what they see on the news think Portland is some wasteland and it is most assuredly not. I live here and have lived in most of the major US cities and Portland has more culture, more iconic architecture and history per pound, and more free thinkers than any city on the west coast--not just for it's small size, but because it attracts the brightest thinkers in the design world to Nike and Adidas world HQ and tech culture for Intel. The airport was always amazing but now is just spectacular.
It's an overhyped stinkpot of a place to live where you will see a naked crackhead waltzing across the street within thirty minutes of leaving the airport.

Being part of an airport redevelopment project has taught me that it’s far from an easy task, and the biggest challenge of all is dealing with limited working hours. I recall one particularly nerve-wracking incident that still stands out. We began construction around midnight, confident that the last flight had departed. But out of nowhere, an aircraft suddenly appeared, taxiing to take off. The situation was incredibly tense, especially since we were performing piling works right next to the taxiway! By 3:30 a.m., we had to halt operations, knowing we could only resume the following night. Moments like these truly test your nerves and adaptability.
