I appreciated that they did not give Helen a 'rescue' story, having been picked and saved by the White man, but made them equal always emphasizing that Helen herself came from a successful Black family and was well - educated with her own work. The fact that they both fought the opposition of both of their families just equalized them more. My mother wouldn't let us watch this show because she said that the George character was written and played as buffoon. She said that no Black man in George's position would behave like that in real life. Where Archie Bunker was a believable character, George Jefferson was totally unbelievable. She also made us stop watching Good Times when they killed off the father James and focused on JJ, another buffoon according to mother. 🤷🏾♀️
Sherman Helmsley deserved an award for his portrayal of George 100% ! so did Marla Gibbs for her role. Lionel #2 was very miscast imo and I did not enjoy his portryal. fun fact: the actress who played Georges' wife was 20 years older than him irl
Was there an episode of The Jeffersons were Lionel went crazy and had the baby by its collar hanging off of the balcony with Jenny behind him screaming begging and crying and they blurred it back to the present and Jenny was crying saying "... And he dropped him" or did I dream that?
@2:00 this is still a problem today on tv. it is so ingrained, even black people at times questioned when there are successful black people on tv. ie. a black doctor and black lawyer raising a family. a 26 year old lawyer having her own house a black family living in belair.

The Jeffersons was a classic show that did not and does not get the credit it deserves.
They should have gotten married in real life. Isabel‘s husband died in 1960 and Sherman never married . They seem to have played the interesting married couple on tv .you know ups and downs of life…
Sherman was proudly gay.
I absolutely LOVE this show! I literally watched it on Amazon Prime last night!
Curious. No disrespect but what did she allow you to watch?
Both Gary Coleman and Jaleel White appeared on The Jeffersons. 😎🙏👍🕵
Lenny Kravitz parents!!
You should interview Eric Lear Mike Evans wrote all of this he was never paid smh just every sad.
WHAT
@2:00 this is still a problem today on tv. it is so ingrained, even black people at times questioned when there are successful black people on tv.
ie. a black doctor and black lawyer raising a family.
a 26 year old lawyer having her own house
a black family living in belair.
It seems easier to sell the struggle of black people than the success.
But it was too much stereotypes
@@lexkanyima2195 why does a stereotype always have to be negative? Stereotypes are formed based on a wildly held belief or perception. White people have positive stereotypes but with black people positivity is met with disbelief.
@@DrLadyBugM but not in a respectful way, look how many black shows didn't get a proper ending of the show.
@@DrLadyBugM what ? Doesn't make sense
I really get sick of myopic views of media. Good Times and The Jeffersons are both good depictions. We dont need either or and I wish folks would stop letting their respectability politics and aspirations have them picking the less common depictions.
Ms Sanford learned a lot about Mother Jefferson because she acted the same way on the Steve Harvey Show when she played Steve Hightower's momma, nasty and judgemental AF,who didnt like Ced much!
Shortly after The Jeffersons ended, Marla Gibs starred in her own series 227.
Leavitt and Moye went on to write Married with children. If you know what to look for, you see similar storytelling and joke patterns
What shot is 15:40 from?
Sonny and Cher can you do them next
One of the best TV. Show of all times.
6:40😮😮 didnt know that❤
Mr. Bently's girlfriend Daphne lives next door to the Gooch.
By the last season the show ranked #50 and had about 13.2 people watching.
Such a iconic show. I wish black producers would do this again, make our own things
Norman Lear is the creator and it is not racism
@@lexkanyima2195 shhh
Juicy Pop is DOPE CONTENT. Rispetto!
yo that ending is sad is shit. Every single one of the cast members is dead 😢
Not all, Jenny and Florence still alive
Grew up on the reruns. Loved it. Sang that dam theme song when we moved out of the trailer park and into a piece of sh!t apartment literally on the east side ha ha. Man i miss government cheese. Went great on mac and cheese
Fun fact: Sherman was a closeted gay man in real life...
