me and my fiance went to seattle last year around September and all I could say is that I fell in love with it. the homeless don't scare me. I did get a guy smoke meth in front of me but he kept his distance. I'm from San antonio where they go up to you and ask for money and if you reject they get aggressive. it was pretty clean except for the areas where the homeless sleep. yeah I would definitely go back

Thank you for making this informative video! I saw Seattle slowly start to decline around 2013, and moved out in 2017. I'm going back to visit, and it was great to see that Pike Place Market is still thriving.

      Decline from 13' to 17'??
It had massive growth, job and population, and a significant increase in quality of life in those years. What exactly was *declining* between 2013 and 2017?

22:47 the point of a siren is to alert people, that’s why it’s so loud. When emergency vehicles get out of the downtown area, the sirens can’t be quite or drivers won’t hear it.

That was a nice walkthrough of downtown Seattle and Pike Place. I agree with your feelings on all the glass towers in Denny Triangle, just no character. Things are similar up here in Vancouver. In fact, Amazon has leased a lot space in our downtown core. And on the other hand we're plagued with graffiti, crime, vandalism and homelessness. This seems common with cities along the west coast. I look forward to more of your videos. Cheers~

I had to move back to Georgia in 2021 for family reasons, but I am working on getting back, and so happy to see things going back up, cleaning up and such, Seattle has such potential, and I'm proud to call it home.

@@sp3_outdoorsYour sister doesn't need prayer cause she lives in Seattle. I have a family member that works in an office for low-income apartments on 3rd avenue, which has a lot of homeless who are sometimes openly doing drugs. My relative has worked at this place for years and loves her job. I also have another relative who lives downtown and loves it. It might look scary seeing a bunch of homeless on the street (some openly doing drugs) but in all my years taking public transportation, walking around everywhere downtown I've been harassed once. And that was way back in the day, many years ago, by some insecure girl that couldn't handle sharing the sidewalk with me because she felt intimidated by my looks. There is crime downtown that happens just like crime happens anywhere else. There are a lot of police downtown and people like the DSA (Downtown Seattle Association) who have cleanup crews and ambassadors who wear uniforms and stand around corners and are available for assistance, such as directions, needing security, etc etc..
I've had DSA bring chalk for my kids to use and tell a homeless guy smoking close to the kids playground to move away from the playground so my kids didn't have to inhale his cigarette smoke.
There is a light rail system underground and plenty of security there as well.
And last time I went to Pike Place Market there were a couple of cops hanging out helping people and joking around.
So, as someone who grew up here and worked downtown your sister should be fine.

This is common in boom / bust cycles. Construction schedules take several years-these were likely underway pre-pandemic. New buildings are not an indication of recovery. Those buildings will largely stay empty during economic decline and held by foreign investors.

More accurately, it’s that Seattle is NOT densely populated. The city core is tiny and has almost no residential buildings. During the pandemic, all the office workers stopped going down there. There are hardly any grocery stores, shopping, anything, just offices and restaurants only open for lunch. So, when the police started closing down the tent cities, the homeless just kind of spread out to the empty areas, which were down by the offices.
Before the pandemic there were too many workers for the homeless to be there.
Very few the buildings in this video were residential. Seattle has almost no residential in the downtown area.

Thank you for the entertaining walkthrough of downtown Seattle (thank you for showing street signs, gave me a reference.). I grew up and lived in Seattle 1950-1985. (BTW, I cringed every time you said Denny Triangle. That body of water you kept referring to as the sea, is Puget Sound! The 1st Starbucks was not at Pike Place Market, it was on 1st Avenue). Seattle used to be gorgeous, fun, safe, exciting, entertaining and an amazing city to live in!!! It's February 2023 now, a year after your video. Amazon, Microsoft, and others have just had gigantic lay-offs. Nike joined Columbia, Frederick & Nelson, Bon Marche, REI, and so many more lovely stores, closed. The police department is offering a $10,000.00 bonus to join, and not getting takers! I believe the caring, intelligent, good people of Seattle will eventually solve the horrendous problems facing Seattle today. In my day Californians sold their over-inflated priced homes and moved up to the beautiful Pacific Northwest and drove up real estate prices, ruining the housing market for hard working families. Shame on you real estate opportunists ruining family life in Seattle!!! Are Californians doing it again? Bringing drug dealers, gangs, the mentally ill and addicted homeless, professional criminals, narcissistic self centered generation of "me-first" spoiled brats? Seattle has all the natural beauty you could ever want in a city, now let the intelligent people fix what is broken, and then you can show us another walkthrough video of amazing, beautiful, entertaining, exciting downtown Seattle for us to enjoy!!! BTW, nice editing, but the overwhelming abundance of graffiti gave you away, lol.

I was a teen in the 90's and worked and hung out downtown. To me Seattle seems pretty much the same as before. There are a lot of closed businesses, but there is still a lot to do in the city. Not sure why some people freak out saying they won't go to Seattle. 3rd Avenue is still 3rd Avenue from the 90's. I've been downtown in the day and night with my kids and nothing's ever happened. And as someone who has gotten around on public transportation throughout my life there are dangerous people everywhere. And a lot of good people everywhere. I was downtown lastnight and saw cops parked on the sides of the street. Also there's security in some of the stores. I didnt feel unsafe at all. Sure, there are a lot of homeless , sometimes openly doing drugs, but in all my years never had a homeless person harrass me. And homeless are everywhere, not just in Seattle.

I be live in Ballard- I can assure you the homeless are not on “the Ballard outskirts”. They are all over. What does that even mean?? The outskirts would be other neighborhoods.
Yes, after all the riots and fires, destruction Capitol Hill is cleaned up. But many of the funky restaurants are long gone. Tons of druggies living in the streets, graffiti.

    • @asmodiusjones9563
      @asmodiusjones9563 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

@@Sarahthompson2237 That’s true but the funky restaurants were on their way out regardless of the pandemic and everything due to land prices. The pandemic sped it up for sure, but it’s the nature of increasing land value.
Consider any longstanding character-providing restaurant. It either leases or owns its building. The land value has increased at least tenfold in the last 10-15 years. If it leases, the property owner can either sell the property, or raise the rent dramatically when the lease expires. Either one is likely to put the restaurant out of business (if they sell, the restaurant will be torn down). I mean, if a restaurant has a 30-year lease, that can make it seem like a neighborhood mainstay, but really it had an expiration date the entire time.
If it owns its property, the owner is in better shape, but that just sets the life of the restaurant to the career of the owner. Once he or she retires, either a family member or close friend takes over and keeps running it the same, or the owner just sells and the new owner changes everything (or tears it down). The former does happen sometimes - I’m sure Dick’s Drive-In owns all their properties and the family is dedicated to keeping the restaurants running consistently, which is why they’re still around and are able to treat their employees well, but it’s a rarity among smaller restaurants.
Today, in general, the only way for a restaurant to operate is for it to be a chain, with streamlined logistics and lesser operating costs (including worker pay!), or for trendy restaurants to pop in, run at break-neck speed for a year or two, and close down once their status as the cool new place to be starts to wane.

This is very eye-opening but in the interest of the viewers recalling the areas affected by the lockdown like Belltown that were shuttered closed and never returned to reopen, is also the same in NYC. Noting the problems with ‘homeless encampments’ surrounding these spaces three years before the pandemic was visibly problematic under Mayor Jenny Gurkin. Belltown was thriving and still had hotspots for nightlife and socializing places along First Avenue. The original Starbucks was [normally] not a problem with walking into it then, and seeing this long line out the door in that timeframe as I recall visiting The Market back then. But noted that these lines now (02/2022) are highly reminiscent of it’s popularity when it first opened (back-in-the-day c. 1984) and the lines did fly around the corner for years over time until it became less so and just gentrified as Starbucks expanded- within Seattle. Then, nationwide. Then, globally. The ebb is still interesting. It’s nice to know more about the drug problems in the Westlake Mall plaza. The food court was switched out many years beforehand for a clothing outlet. But maybe they should think about reinventing the spaces as it was. And sad to see that the McDonalds closed on the corner- across from the former Bon Marché building. The central shopping core in Seattle is obviously outright dismal and unattractive by comparison to the retail stores in places within NYC right now. The recovery despite major downturns and criminal issues is by far still the best after the economy began churning up businesses. Though, many businesses remain shuttered and abandoned like before the Great Recession (2008-2010). As a former Seattlelite- Broadway by example changed dramatically over the decades. And what was really a great business and fashionable retail place was overtaken by the newer condos built and the transit station removing historical places of interest. Very lackluster and not very appealing as the downturn continues to abate its general attraction. There was a time when traffic to cars was not allowed in the Market too.
Third Avenue, as I recalled was still bustling with businesses up until the beginning of 2018, before the crisis started. And it’s historical to reference this video as a guideline to then and now and in years past as we New Seattle during the 70s-80s. Make more. Since you were at Amazon ! It’s such a point of course seeing the expansions there in the urbanization and latest to newest construction développement updated through this walking tour. Amazing … but one point in case about « cleanliness » vs. modernizations there, vs. NYC- it’s not the same as described. The tourism here outpaces Seattle’s most populous tourist attractions and retail businesses in the downtown core. Surely watching the ground covered on a Sunday no less, it’s extremely quieter than than being anywhere in Manhattan or elsewhere around NYC. Insofar as trash, we’ll, NYC overall per square mile is in fact probably the same as Seattle if not it’s equivalent given the amount of human waste and trash that is present for us and not unknown. The major differences between the West Coast cities and NYC-is homelessness encampments. They do not overrun major thoroughfares like it gas in L.A., San Francisco and Seattle. Though homeless people have become a serious problem and threat to public safety here as well. So the comparatives judged by this and NYC today (05/2022), is definitely not a greater balancing of peopling vs. urbanized life. NYC still has what Seattle lacks aside it’s greater commerce. That stands to be revitalized. Whereas here it’s not a major issue. Or, tourism overall like there. Which is not that great based on what’s going on with the transitioning from pre-Covid standards.

I just came from a conference in Seattle, but any time I travel, I try to do tons of exploring for content on my channel. There were lots to see! After I'm done with a trip, then I like to go back and watch others' videos to learn new things, now that I had a baseline perspective of the city. A few things that came to mind:
    1. Thanks for talking about the Amazon locations and how everything is scattered (including the globes, which I was wondering what they were!). On one of the days, I filmed a walk to the "Amazon Headquarters," according to Google Maps. When I got there, I basically saw nothing -- I was narrating, "Where's the signage? It's a ghost town." It's nice to know that they are just nondescript about their presence.
    2. In just the 5 days that we were there, we already saw a big difference in what the new mayor is trying to implement with cleaning up crime in Downtown Seattle. On our bus ride into Downtown, the bus went down 2nd Avenue, and we saw the streets lined with people on the streets. A few days later, that area, Pioneer Square, and other seemed to be swept. We saw multiple mobile police units guarding the streets in a few areas on our final full day there. I was surprised that for all the filming I did, not one person harassed me about my camera -- although I also did try putting it away any time I knew I was near a sketchier area.
    3. One of my brother and I's first observations upon seeing Downtown Seattle was, "Jesus, there are so many hotels and new residential buildings under construction -- is this all for Amazon and other headquarters workers?" On one hand, it seemed a bit excessive, but the population does seem large. Downtown Seattle is massive. I'm from Downtown Cleveland, which is a decent size, but Seattle seems like it's four times the size or more. Maybe I'm just losing perspective.
Thanks again for the nice video!

@@GeminiDiscover : who is cleaning them!? There are dozens and dozens of encampments all down I/5, in the neighborhoods, all the way up to Shoreline, all over Woodland Park. Get real. There are thousands of people living in tents and broken down RVs & they are hoarders . They collect trash all around their tents & campers. It’s filth, there are used needles and crime.

Yes there is a meth-drug-homeless problem in Seattle. But Seattle is not the only city facing this dilemma. I have worked with this population. And I have come to the conclusion that, the majority are permanently damaged. For the rest of their lives. Therefore, there needs to be a permanent long-term solution. I think one solution could be. They have two choices:
1). Get arrested. And go to jail for two years.
    Or
2). Goto an involuntary, long term, in-house drug treatment facility. And those facilities can be located where the old for profit prisons are located in the United States.
I believe most of these for profit prisons have been shut down therefore they are vacant. That's where I would send this population too. Again they either go to go to jail for 2 years or you ship them out to one of these old for-profit prisons.
This would clean the streets or sweep the streets of these homeless camps. Now commerce would invest back into that community and it could be thriving again such as Westlake once was.
Again, we need to take the gloves off the homeless population. But there must be long-term alternative housing in place before you do a serious crackdown or sweep. Because if you don't provide a long-term solution and that includes housing you're just sweeping the problem for one location to another in a city.

Looks like he skipped 3rd street completely. If you're gonna do a video do it on the good bad and the ugly. It's a whole block that's basically a mini skid row. I don't even go to down town anymore. It just doesn't give you good vibes. Idk why he didn't decide to show that? It's a pretty big drug scene. Even when they "clean things up" it's just a game of ' whack a mole' ....the issue just pops up in another area. I'm not saying I hate Seattle I actually love WA as a state but it has huuuuge problems lets be real.
