The now Dr. Dainis, has help me realize that I really need to go back to college. I miss research and seeing someone who thinks the same way about science is really motivating.
You probably don't remember, but I was following you early in your channel, and when you got accepted to grad school at Stanford, I wrote a comment to you about my Bio PhD experience there and wishing you well. Over the years it seems that your videos just weren't coming up in my feed, and so I'm just now seeing this as they've started showing back up. A very belated congrats on your successful defense! I went back to Hopkins Marine Station, where my lab was, when my mentor retired, 20 years after I finished my doctorate. I was there at a time when everyone in my old lab was away at a conference, so I was able to go in and look around in the place all alone. It was amazing how little it had really changed, but also very noticeable in the ways that it had, and very weird to look into my bay and bench and know that not only wasn't it mine anymore, but that it was someone else's whom I'd never met. It will always feel like an old home, and I hope you get many opportunities to return to yours.
Congratulations Dr. Dainis! I hope this is not the end of your YT-career though. I want to know what is out there for people who finished their PhD! So I have something to look forward to!
Definitely not the end! In fact, I'm about to start dedicating way more time to making videos, so they should be back to a somewhat regular schedule soon!
After watching this, I rewatched the "Bite Sci-zed,Year One", "New Bite Sci-zed" and "I'm starting a Science Vlog!" videos. Congratulations on your journey so far, Dr. Dainis. I wish you an exciting new chapter.
Congratulations! I managed to finish my PhD last year, but stayed on as a post-doc in the same lab. Now I'm the one who gets to watch people come and go all the time! And speaking of refrigerators, we had to de-ice our lab ones today and through out samples from students as far back as 2010! Looking forward to hearing about what you have planned for the future =)
Me too! And considering I already have trips planned bay to the Bay Area for November and December, I don't think it's really losing me any time soon :)
Congratulations! I remember starting to watch back with your appearance on Numberphile about synesthesia! Now that I'm starting on my bachelor's I see there's a long road ahead of me. Honestly, your videos have helped me a lot in deciding what I wanted to go into. In the end, I'm not in the sciences (the tedium isn't for me), but I still love it. Hip hip hooray Dr. Dainis!!
Just saw all of your What is this Thing videos and I can't believe this is the last one! :( As someone who is just starting out in a wet lab, your videos were EXTREMELY motivational and helpful. Really looking forward to the next 3-4 years of my PhD thanks to you. I know it's been a while, but still Congratulations! This is a huge deal.
Oh gosh, I'm so glad they have been helpful to you! Best of luck on your PhD journey. It's long, and can be hard at times, but it can also be so much fun and so rewarding!!

Congrats! I remember I started watching your videos like 5 or 6 years ago, Bite-sized was still your channel. Back then I was finishing my Middle High School and now I'm one step away of getting my Bachelor's Degree on Biology. Certainly you were one of the people that I admire and who pushed me to continue in the wonderful world of science. At the begining of this year I took a course on Culture of animal's cells and tissues and I understood your fascination with them. I'm not sure if after getting my degree I will continue on the culture's branch, but at least I learned a lot and I know I can use that tool in a future. Thanks for everything until now, congratulations and be successful in whatever you chose as your next step!
Wow, this made my day! Congratulations won’t convey how much, I’m so happy for you Alex- no, Dr. Dainis. Thank you so much for sharing this leg of the voyage with us, I can’t wait to see where you go next. I still believe you can do anything!
Happy for your accomplishment. A long road which has been great to join you for a part of it. Think I've been watching for 4 or 5 year, hope we hear from you again, but understand you've a life ahead. Thanks for the sneak peek.
My goodness, CONGRATULATIONS, Dr. Dainis. Can't wait for the more detailed video to find out what's next for you. I hope it includes a return to Boston, at least for a visit.
Congratulations and thank you! You’ve taken my daughters from ages 7 to 10 as they watched and learned about science and lab work from a real grad student... ...your content was priceless and inspirational for encouraging my girls about science. Best of luck to you!
Congratulations! Finishing that pHD is NO small feat! And, it's been so cool watching you grow over these many years. I love that you're such good role model for other young women that may want to get into science, but are hesitating for whatever reason. I think you have helped so many people move in that direction. Thank you!
Congratulations on the PHD. I am looking forward for graduate school graduation myself. Hopefully done my May. It was nice to see a post on patreon with a new video 😊. Best of luck in the future plans!

Alex! I've been watching your videos since I was in secondary school, u were an inspiration to me to study with passion and share knowledge, now I am a 4th year med student and still visit your channel every now and then to be reminded of your awesome mindset and be refreshed for new challenges. You have always been the best at sharing enthusiasm about science imo, I hope to see your channel grow up as the best in it's field right when you start uploading regularly. Congrats Alex! I'm a long time fan been watching your videos for several years now, way back to some of your earlier Bite Sci-zed. I'm currently in my 4th year of my PhD program, and your videos have mirrored a lot of my life experiences and they have always been a pleasure to watch. You talking about the various struggles of grad school have helped me through some of my hard times and for that I thank you. I look forward to see what awesome stuff you do next!
Thanks! And good luck on your own PhD journey. I wish I had done *more* talking about the struggles (and the successes!) because I often feel like grad school can make us feel like we're the only ones going through specific hardships when they're often common to all of us! But I'm glad my videos have helped you along the way :)
Amazing Alex, congratulations!!! I had your mottos "I'm here to learn; I'm here to learn the hard way" written on my board during my master too, it helped going through! Thanks for the inspiration!!
