DIY Spring Box / Noise Box: My first creation for sound design in horror movies 👻

  • In this video I test the first noise box I've ever built.
    For the construction I've used springs, screws, rods and one guitar string. In the end, I've put two piezo mics inside the box.
    The final sound is manipulated by my Eurorack modules (uClouds and SMR).

    As I listen to this (twice) this is what I wrote in my journal.
    You have me thinking about building a nice box with a wooden lid, as a base. Build a second box with a steel sheet as it’s top and open on bottom.
    Spend the open box over the wooden bow with a stout neck.
    Run 10 bass guitar strings from the steel plate to tuners on the wooden box. Tune then from low A to High A like you would a bass guitar. Repeat this with Weed eater string. And add springs of different sizes and weights.
    You could play it with rubber mallets, finger pick it or use a bow on it.
    Thank you for setting my mind free.

      It almost seems like you want to create a new chordophone!
      Your idea intrigued me, hope you will share on YB the final results :)

    Sounds great but looks like you also need an expensive reverb/delay unit to actually get anything decent from it.

    Sounds, and looks amazing. Do you use a preamp for the piezo, or do pedals/ effects units do the same thing? I bought a 3 spring piezo instrument on etsy, and now I'm curious about how to make similar instruments myself.

      Happy new year!
      Thank you so much :)
      More or less it's cost me about 20€. The most expensive parts probably are the contact microphones inside the box, the rest are woods, rods, screws and springs, so very cheap :)

    Very well executed Marco. Love the modular touch. Can I ask what string you're using with the plastic "bridge" you're sliding back and forth? And regarding the bridge, can you tell me what key word I might use for a Google search to locate one? Thanks

    • @marcoadobaticomposer
      @marcoadobaticomposer  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you so much Erik.
      It's a regular guitar string (a few days before I broke it haha). As for the bridge, it is made by me with wood :) Simply it is a plywood (5mm) cut like a violin bridge, lightened by some holes :)
      Finally i also waxed the wooden surface of the spring box, so "sliding the bridge" it's easier :)

      Hi, amazing video, fantastic sounds you've tweaked and engineered here. Tis a thing of wondrous beauty. Any chance of a sample pack from this? But of a long shot I guess...
      If not, could I get your permission to sample it for an ambient dub project? I'd like to work on this and make it available online completely free. Thank you 🙏

    • @marcoadobaticomposer
      @marcoadobaticomposer  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Don't worry man, it's very easy! You need only a box (better if in wood), some screws and springs, and obviously piezoelectric microphones to put inside :)

      @@marcoadobaticomposer grazie! Che eurorack utilizzi? Anch'io sperimento un po'. Ho una piccola noise box, un pienzo (acquistati) che collego a vari effetti a pedale +Kp3 e altro ma vorrei espandere le possibilità di modulazione del suono perché certe cose non le ottengo neanche lontanamente coi synth. Immagino che anche tu sia iscritto alla pagina SynthCafé 🙂

      Con qualche modulo eurorack come un granulare (tipo "Beads") e magari un risonatore (tipo "Rings"), assieme ai tuoi pedali ti darà già grandissime soddisfazioni a livello di sound design :)
      Poi a seconda delle tue "mire espansionistiche" nel mondo modulare, la scelta del case varia molto invece. Spendendo poco, solo per questi pochi moduli di cui ti ho parlato (e magari qualcuno in più per modularli), potresti prendere in considerazione il case della moog da 60HP in accoppiata ad una buona PSU :)
      Se sei interessato comunque, ti lascio il link dove spiego passo passo come ho costruito la Spring box:

    just take an electric guitar connected to overloaded amp and sctratch its strings, it's gonna be not worse than that
