Wood turning - Pine Fruit Bowl

  • It has been just over a year since I bought my lathe. I started with a couple of pine projects, so I thought that I would use pine as a benchmark for how far I have progressed over that year.
    I absolutely loved making this bowl, it is one of my biggest yet, at 11.5 inches by 2.5 inches. There is something very satisfying turning a bowl from bland and basic materials.... Although the price of CLS timber is going crazy at the moment!
    Enjoy!!!

    WOW, from site timber to a fruit bowl, the grain is stunning. A lot of TH-camrs are starting to use pine, under used as only a softwood but can be stunning when used right. Thanks for sharing

      @@RDMWoodturning I just tried this exact same thing, but 6 inches deep. Problem is I only have a 10inch diameter lathe. So instead of the salad bowl I was hoping for I ended up with a plant pot XD

    Beautiful piece!
    I have a question though. I understand pine is a very soft wood but how does cutting out that little disk in the center bottom center and putting the glue in it help, especially during the middle of turning the bottom? I could understand strengthening it before mounting the piece it to turn the inside but why did you do it when you did? I’m confused.. 🤔🤷🏻‍♀️

    • @RDMWoodturning
      @RDMWoodturning  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for watching. I strengthen the mortise early in the process with pine, in order to allow maximum time for the CA Glue to penetrate and harden. I have had far too many pine projects split when mounting on the chuck when hollowing out. 😊

    • @RDMWoodturning
      @RDMWoodturning  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I didn't, although probably should have. As it was CLS construction lumber, it was kiln dried and factory planed first, so I took my chances.

      Hi. I have a Charnwood 824. I think it was around £450. Great lathe. Features I like are heavy, variable speed and Rev counter. Other brands/ models are out there, but I really couldn’t comment on their merits. Good luck
