    *UPDATE* - Yes, the Pentium Gold CPUs have launched - would I buy one? No. Will I buy one, yes, mostly to make a video and tell you not to. :) It should be here tomorrow. Price G5400 + H310 vs R3 2200G + A320 and tell me which is the deal. :)

      G5400 is ok 64USD... but H310 is a poor chipset few PCIe lines, I go for B360 in Europe the less espansive B360 (Gigabyte B360 H) cost very few bucks more than any H310 with M.2 PCIe

    I've got one with an i3 8100 and it is perfectly fine. Having a 32GB ram option is great, as I do a lot of video editing. I coupled it with a gtx 970 G1 gaming card and at 1080p get 60fps easy in new games. No stuttering, freezing, or anything like that. Very happy with the board for the price, as it only cost me 30 bucks in an amazon sale, and the cpu 80. Are there other boards out there with more features? Without a doubt. Do I need them? No. This board is fine.

  • @CristiBucerzan
    @CristiBucerzan 6 ปีที่แล้ว +34

    Imo since there is no performance difference between the different intel chipsets ,the only reason to invest in a more expensive chipset and motherboard are the features and overclocking abilities,if you need them,then yes it's worth the extra money,if you don't,then combining a cheap motherboard like this with any non overclockable intel cpu it's a good idea,after all it's got all the basic features most users need and will use.

    • @asysjr
      @asysjr 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      H310 mobos should not be used in i7 8700, due to the VRM limitations. You can get overheat and estability issues in these low-end mobos with a i7. A B360 homewer, it´s OK.

    Last year I had to grab a similar budget board for my i5-6600, after my Gigabyte B150M decided it had enough after one year...the cheapest and quickest replacement I could find, locally, was the MSI H110M at US$105. I mostly agree with your review and I've had no issues, so far. My next build will be Ryzen.

  • @cheezus4772

    Sooo, this is a board that fully supports EVERYTHING 95% of the consumers will ever need it to do but your recommendation is NEVER to buy it and instead buy a MB that is 3 times the price for... reasons.
    A note for anyone intelligent reading this - beware tech youtubers masturbating over specks and flogging the latest overpriced gewgaw manufacturers sent them for free. Hardware is a tool. Buy the one that makes sense for your usage scenario and not just the shiniest one in the storeroom.

    As always, great, thorough video! I must say that M.2 mounting...........solution just looks weird on that board. No screw like usual? Budget solutions for budget boards, so there you go. Just seems like this should have just been relegated to the OEM community and not sold retail because why bother, when like you said, the B360 is so close in price, it'd be silly not to step up.

    I love the immediate intro of "please don''t buy this" right from the outset swiftly followed by "now I will explain why it makes no sense." However even if someone *did* want to buy it regardless, you still cover all the functionality, limitations, specification and actual use cases and round it by putting it into context of better alternatives. This is what separates this channel from all the others, and long may it continue.

    It's fine for anyone who isn't overclocking, which is almost everyone.

  • @AlfaPro1337
    @AlfaPro1337 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    I think the H310 chipset is still fine for gaming only.
    1. Use a low end NVME M.2, it's still quite fast than a SATA M.2--even on a PCIE 2.0 lane. Plus, it's a boot drive.
    2. That 4 SATA ports is more than enough, especially if you use a single 3TB storage.
    3. The dGPU PCIE is still 3.0, directly from the CPU
    4. Most gaming RAM configuration is 8GBx2
    5. Able to use those non-K chips
    There's the $20-40 difference from H310 to B360 chipset (of the same scheme, e.g. Gaming Plus).

    A driver for all Intel GPUs is in a Linux core, so any Linux works flawlessly on any Intel especially during automatic Linux core updates. That driver is stable for ~10 years already and is regularly updated for new Intel CPUs. Proprietary Nvidia or Radeon drivers for Linux sometimes may cause problems during core software updates. Most Intel CPUs have better single thread performance that's important for a software single-threaded by nature or design(some setups for video rendering in Blender).

    One thing that everyone seems to overlook... this seems to be one of the last mobos to officially support Windows 7 with chipset drivers (h310 r2 being the last time in a while that Intel supported Win7). True, you can run Win7 in other manners on better boards, but that doesn't change the fact that this is the last time we got official driver support... long after AMD ended Win7 support. In fact, a lot about the h310 r2 screams 'legacy support'.

    I have the same board because it fits in my mini itx case and is pretty cheap. I run a proper gaming system with i5 8400 and gtx 1070 off of this without problem. I don't see any downsides to this other than weak vrms and less number of hsio/pcie lanes and consequently less number of expansion ports on the board. Also, regarding the m.2 situation, you can certainly put an nvme ssd in there but the pcie 1x slot next to 16x slot will not work(it is not even accessible when you install a GPU). Also, most nvme SSDs don't saturate the absurd amount of bandwidth they have now(usually using around 600mbps). You are moaning about the bells and whistles it is missing, whereas I think ASUS has created a clever board with the budget(of the consumer) and chipset they were working with. At some point I will upgrade my system for 4k with a 95watt processor and I am pretty sure it will still run just fine.

    And the ASUS H310M-E for $19.99...
    Would that assuage the "Ryzen is a better deal," angle? Considering the 1300X is measurably a lesser-performing chip? Or is this motherboard and CPU not worth pairing when they're basically giving it away?

    "Above that you see the CPU socket, and some very, VERY basic VRMs and NO cooling whatsoever on them. It's not designed for anything powerful whatsoever, but an i3-8100, or frankly an i5-8400 would be fine. And then there's a 4-pin CPU power connector up at the top."
    Just curious, could an i7-8700K run on a board like this, obviously at stock settings (NO overclock)? Or would it be too much for the VRMs or 4-pin connector to handle?
    (Of course I wouldn't pair an 8700K with this board unless someone gave them to me for free, and even then I might not.)

      asus site says all 8th gen cpu are supported. It's on the compatibility list. 8700k is supported since 0223 bios. Given, I would gamble, most likely it would work way shorter than intended. Just remembered, 8700 would throttle down on h310 after a while of load since vrm's would handle the task

    I don't know what he is saying, in my setup literally my 9400f is working fine with MSI H310 pro vh running all cores at 3996 MHz while gaming and Asus rx570 at 1300 MHz only I can't set my 3000 MHz ram to 3000 as max support showing 2666mhz . And trust me the performance 1080 med to high is really good ,I mean seriously smooth 50 to 70 FPS almost in all games. 💯

    In this video you start by declaring a hard fast rule that this chipset is bad, then proceed to list no real reason it is bad. You actually state lies, saying that this board only has pcie 2.0 on the x16 slot? Are you insane? No board, at all, in any chipset, has used anything other than pcie 3.0 for about 4 years now.

    But in the end of the day the motherboard wont affect performance only connections (?). If you put a i3 8100 in the Z370 (which makes no sense money wise, just for comparison) and a i7 Non-K in the H310 they will perform the same that they would in the other board. Since the price may not translates the same in all countries and a lot of gamers don't really know much about mobos (me among then, so if I'm saying something wrong, please correct me), in a tight budget it could be the difference in getting other something just a wee bit better.

  • @CasualFace

    If it takes an NVME ssd why shouldn't we put an NVME ssd in that slot? What's the point of being able to use it for NVME if it is adviesd against? This is confusing and infuriating when deciding what SSD to get!

    What if you don't need all those extra features? I'm not going to be using an M.2 ssd so pci-e 2.0 doesn't really matter.
    And the pc building company I'm using (Portatech.com) has the B360 option priced at $40 more than the H310 option.
    I know what you nerds are going to say..... pick a different company (they have the cheapest prices for pre-built) or just buy all the components and build it yourself. Well.... I did build a pc with a Ryzen 5 1600..... and I"m having all kind of crazy issues with it after trying to overclock it (basically the system won't even boot up to POST.... nothing on screen). Bought a new ryzen motherboard, video card, new cpu, new psu just to try to figure out what is causing the issue. I even breadboarded the build (mb out of case, on cardboard box). Still nothing. So I"m returning all the new, extra components I bought (to help troubleshoot this issue) to Amazon and ordering a barebones, pre-built system.

    Hmm... Usually these budget boards get ultra cheap pretty fast after release. You can a get mobo and a pentium for about 100-120 dollars. R3 2200G alone costs 99 and prefers faster ram which is more expensive of course. If you don't game or watch 4k movies I'd get one of these if the price difference of the system gets over 100 bucks intel vs amd.

    Here in Brazil there's tons of people who pair these cheap boards with i7s... Don't you dare saying that they're stupid, they'll attack you and say they know what they're doing. I wonder why manufacturers don't mention the possible problems you can have pairing a more robust cpu with a anemic VRM.
