@@sjsharksfangirl yeah but both were channels for kids like these days we got ABC and Abc kids but that's only recently back when I was growing up it was the one channel the only difference between ABC and Disney is ABC is not a pussy, it knows its a kids show so it's not to scary or sad or whatever but it tackles serious issues like depression, death, growing up, sexism, and as it went on the stuff it tackled got more serious as its like for the kids that started watching it being that age now or whatever.
What I mean is Disney will always and I mean always shy away from tscking big serious issues because kids are watching and its like well okay don't use prophanety (probably spelt that wrong) swear words in the show but come on shielding them and saying everything is happy don't look outside this perfect safe world we have created. I mean back in the day Disney was never afraid to tackle serious stuff. I was able to deal with my Nan's death because lion king taught me to move forward.
Aladdin taught me never to judge a book by it's cover its what's inside that counts. Mulan taught me that women are just as capable if not more than men I could go on but I think I made my point.
Its fine to have kiddy fun shows and even semi adult kid shows.
But when you take something like BMW and want to create a sequel series don't insult the fans by ignoring what made it so great and that is it dealt with serious issues and helped show kids what is right wrong and etc...
I think I'll end my rant here before I go on any longer but yeah Disney used to have a good balance between fun happy kid movies/series and serious themes/issues now its 100% kid gloves.
Luckily the MCU is part of Marvel and while Disney owns the rights its kind of marvels own area etc...

I really feel if Girl Meets World had switched to ABC after awhile, and helped continue TGIF, then it could have gotten really good. Especially if they had tackled serious issues like Boy Meets World. Girl Meets World had tremendous potential and I think being a show exclusive to Disney after awhile kind of hurt it. I love how Disney wanted to continue the original show’s legacy, but it felt like the follow up never quite hit the sweet spot like Boy Meets World did. Boy Meets World took a little while to find its footing, but once it did, it took off like a rocket. I remember in Disney Adventures Magazine someone said Ben Savage needed to leave the acting to his brother. Boy were they wrong. The show was amazing and I miss it.

I wish today's shows would address drinking more, especially this BS narrative about Millennials drowning all their problems in alcohol, wine moms, treating your liver like a fun filter ie _"shut up, liver, you'll be fine!"_ etc. No, it _won't_ be fine.
My oldest sister died of liver failure in 2018 that was from drinking, and it is a _horrific_ way to go on top of leaving all of your loved ones with the feeling that the bottle was more important to you than they were. Alcohol turned my sister into a different person, and it destroyed our relationship as a result because after so many times of her taking a drunk flame thrower to the bridge I was trying to rebuild, I finally gave up because I couldn't take the hurt anymore. She died without us being able to resolve any of it, and I'm still angry almost four years later.
Don't drown your problems with alcohol and don't treat your liver like it's invincible. It's not. This sounds cheesy as fuck but if you have a problem with drinking, _please_ take this as a sign from the Universe to get the help you need. You deserve better, and so do the people who care about you.

The episode that I think is one of the most relatable is the one when Alan was unhappy with his job. He talked about how much hated his job but that he only kept it to support his family, which is something I think a lot of people can understand and relate to. I think this episode did a really great job at shedding a light on the concepts of job dissatisfaction, as well as settling. There's a line that Alan said in the "You can go home again" episode about how easy it is to find someplace that's comfortable and just want to stay there. I think there's a lot of truth in that line. It is easy to want to stay someplace that's comfortable and play it safe. I think this episode, as well as the "I ain't gonna spray lettuce no more" episode did a fantastic job at shining a light on these life concepts.

I completely agree about Girl Meets World. It was cute, and I really liked it. But it would have been super impactful if it was on Freeform or something. The foundation for a super successful show was there, and they definitely had the actors and backstories to make it work. But with it being a Disney Channel show, it was too safe.
If the show had been on Freeform, I would have expected to see the underage drinking (+drugs) plot reappear with Maya. With her and Shawn being family now it definitely would have been an impactful storyline. And I personally wouldn’t have wanted to see Lucas be a bad guy, if there was a time Riley was in a relationship with someone else and they tried to take advantage of her (like Stuart with Topanga), it would have taken an emotional toll on Riley. I think it’d be an extremely intense plot, too, because Lucas has established anger issues and wouldn’t hesitate to nearly kill the guy, Topanga is a highly respected lawyer, etc. Farkle ended up not being autistic in the show but Smackle is and that would open up its own problems in the world when people look down on autistic people for whatever reason. Although I think if Farkle ended up being not straight it would be an even better story than just him with Smackle. Also, I would never want Cory and Topanga to break up in any universe but I think it would be interesting to show how hard on relationships it is to have children struggling (sort of like in the episode where Alan is fighting with Cory about his decision to be married and Amy is struggling to accept it). And also, Maya and Josh and the unignorable age difference that’s cute on the Disney show but in reality wouldnt be okay, and what kind of problems would arise from them (jealousy, college parties, intimacy before she’s ready, substance abuse, etc). And, lastly, because I love a good love triangle, a more heated, realistic love triangle between Riley, Lucas, Maya and the repercussions of the choices they make.

Over the next few weeks he avoided her during class, which she expressed needing meetings (like all his other students) but wanted him to get past it. On Reddit she was asking how to discreetly meet with him to discuss pretending the incident never happened, without use of school resources that could be traced.
Eventually she scheduled a meeting to discuss her dissertation (again like other students), he lied and reported she offered to clean his house naked for a good grade. She ended up transferring to another school with her credits in tact, and the connard was only blacklisted from the maid agency. The university made it clear they would protect him.

Don't forget about Shawn's relapse, either! The discussion of alcohol abuse running in a family is a powerful topic to be shown in a sitcom from the 90s, but to then also touch on *staying* sober (when Shawn gets the letter, and shows up drunk to the Matthews') is another place I wouldn't have expected the show to go, but I'm all the prouder because of it!

Girl Meets World tried, but re-creating magic like BMW is really hard. The show was great when it brought back the original characters and tied their previous character arcs into the current timeline. However, when left to its own devices, it came off as just another run of the mill Disney Channel sitcom. I enjoyed it, and my kids still enjoy watching it. However, my 13 year-old son tells me he does enjoy the original BMW episodes better, and that is saying something because I was his age when BMW was originally airing.

Everyone always sleeps on the BMW episode The Provider. It should be required viewing for couples about to be married/engaged/live in partners.
Hands down the most important relationship episode in the entire show. Couples need to know it is okay to disagree, it is okay to verbally fight. It is NOT okay to demean each other, to disrespect your significant other in order to win. The lesson in this episode about building your partner/spouse up and making them your equal in their own eyes is deeply important. As is the idea of “having it out” instead of running away or turning to physical violence. Partners/spouses need to be able to talk through their issues productively. It’s okay to raise your voice. It’s fine to disagree. But it can’t stop there. You have to let the argument play out fully before you can broach a solution. Cory and Topanga do this the right way in The Provider apartment scenes after the huge fight. They have the fight, they agree to work through the impasse no matter how long it takes, they continue to yell for a bit, but it’s productive not destructive. And eventually they stop yelling and can hash it out in normal conversation. But the best part is when Topanga breaks down about killing Cory’s spirit, something he accused her of during the big fight, he tells her he shouldn’t have said that, it’s not true, but Topanga points out that it felt true to him. She gave his views merit even though she disagreed most of the argument. And that’s when they find the solution, when they are comforting each other (building up) instead of demeaning (tearing down) each other.
The Provider is an exceptionally written episode and the acting from Ben and Danielle is top tier authentic in that fight. One of the best relationship lesson episodes on TV ever.

There were very few sitcoms that were directed at black audiences in 90s and 2000s. Martin was one of the few shows that was targeted at an audience that lacked representation. It was also one of the few gigs AA actors could get because they couldn't get role in most "mainstream" sitcom. Many actors and statistics support that even now.
