I had my first lesson with Jim Chapin in 1973. My last was in 1995 or 1996 at Ray Franzen's drum shop in New Orleans. Everyone who knew Jim liked him. He was the kind of guy that even when he was saying "NO, NO. NO," it put a smile on your face. I was a set player but spent some time in the USMC Drum & Bugle Corps. I remember playing either five or seven stroke rolls while I was talking about a guy in D&B school that marched with the Rochester Crusaders and how he could play these rolls with one hand. Jim was smiling and I noticed him copying my fives or sevens note for note with one hand. Jim was an Army drummer too. The man could play into the head as well as any drummer I have ever seen. He had one of the best "field" double stroke rolls I have ever heard. (Of course he also wrote Volume Two - "The Open End"). He was a great teacher missed by all who knew him.
Wonderful story! I recently found the recording of my last lesson with Jim. He very kindly allowed me to record it using an old dictaphone. It had been lost for around 20 years & tbh I really didn't think I was ever going to find it. I have been teaching now for 20 years & his handouts & this book have been not only a constant part of my own playing but a continued source of information & inspiration for my students. Thank you Dom for your wonderful help and support for Jim & his incredible books and teaching materials. 🥁🙏❤️
Jim chapin was the shit. Thank you dom for saving his book because of his work still lives on and inspires others. I've used the book for my students and they love it.
Wow Dom! What a Great story! You made me smile! Jim's book is fantastic! I used to have an old tape of Jim's as well. Glad you was able to restore the master recording! Thank you so much for the great story!
I stll have his book which I bought somewhere around 1966-67 & still get out and practice now and again. It does not matter what kind of music you play that independency still can be applied.
Sad situation getting older. People in USA don't take care of the seniors. A man So full of Love, needing money. Saddens my heart. Dom lifted me up! Thanks Dom. I really love Jim. Thank you sir..
Greg Burrows I do reply with each comment with Thanks so much!!! Lol. I respond to as many as I can. Jim’s book is a classic and will live on past my lifetime! Enjoy.
Dom Famularo Thank you Mr. Dom Famularo! Forgive my grouchy comment, note to self: don’t comment on YT videos at 3 AM. I’ve edited my comment above to keep it pertinent and much respect to you, hope I get to meet you sometime. You teach privately in NY area? LI?
Greg Burrows Excellent! No worries!!! Yes, I teach at my home studio on LI and have many students on skype. I believe in keeping a high respect for the drummers that paved the way for us to continue our personal drumming journey! Thanks!
Hi! Within a minute of finishing this clip I managed to buy a copy of the book. Although I am a novice at playing the drums I love was the drums (& music) gives me. For the last hour or so I've been playing clip after clip and don't want to stop. These stories are historical treasures. Please don't stop!
Wow what a story. I meet him once in frankfurt at the music fair , at the vic firth booth with a practice pad and a pair of sticks. What he shown me was a real game changer. Unforgattable ✌️🥁🙏
This is a great story, i have a white copy of the book, didn't know about the reprint with CD's, will now be ordering a copy! Your enthusiasm for drumming and education is truly wonderful...keep it coming!!
Wow, just came across this video. Great story, thank you. I then just went to my cabinet and I have all three books! Now I just need to go to the store and buy a CD player! 🤗 (Still practicing on my end. If I have limited time and can't do anything else, I at least almost daily do the 2-50 alternate left/right hand, together 5 minutes and and singles 5 minutes. Doing this is the key to sanity in my old age! 😂)
Thank you so much Dom. Love to hear these stories. I have the book and it's really great. Incredible story.. All these great guy's created the foundation for modern drummers of today.
Hey Dom - Are you familiar with Angelo Ferrara? He played drums for Joe Barone and Lilly Ann Carol back in the 60s and 70s. He was excellent! I have been trying to locate some recordings that he was on. I used to throw Jim's book across my room in frustration, trying to play some of the exercises in the back of his book..lol
Hey Dom! Love the video, you have a brilliant mind and you shared so much fascinating information, thanks so much for sharing!! I aspire to create some educational percussion content of my own on a new channel, and I was wondering what your camera/microphone set up is? More specifically, would you mind sharing what lapel mic and camera you use? Thank you so much!! Abbey
Hugely important part of the story missing: there was a rumor going around when I was a kid, that Jim could actually NOT play all the exercises in his book. That was a really pervasive rumor among many drummers in the New York area back in the 1970s and maybe earlier. So this recording completely debunks the lie and myth… Right? Thanks so much!!!
Thanks for sharing this amazing stories Mr. Famularo, makes me appreciate even more this wonderful book, i ´ll make all my students listen to the story behind. By the way , was a huge honor to shake hands at NAMM early this year. One last thing, do you still have a recent list of every countires drum educators? Thanks again for every passionate and inspiring action you make for the drumming community around the world! Hope to see you in Mexico sometime soon!
Carlos Cleriga Thanks so much!!! Yes, the teacher list is on Modern Drummer website and also my website. Are you a teacher? Email me at global2dom@gmail.com with your name and website.
If you think Jim Chapin's home was disorganized after his wife had passed you should've seen Barrett Deem's home after he passed. It took me and another fella over a year to go through the house - and we were there 3x a week. After I left I always felt like I needed a penicillin shot. Seriously.

THANK YOU DOM! FOR SAVING A BIG PART OF DRUM HISTORY!! AMAZING STORY! WHO WAS THE BASS PLAYER IN THE TAPE? AND WHAT HAPPENED TO THE BASS PLAYER? WHO HAS HE WORKED WITH? GOD BLESS!!
I'm from Bulgaria and we were under communist rule until 1989. So no access to books like these or whatever from the US. Vinyls, Books, Cassettes later on and so on. But when I started to learn in the national academy, the professor there had a copy of Jim Chapin's book that someone smuggled in somehow. This book that no-one knows who smuggled in Bulgaria got copied so many times that I cannot even imagine. I know that if you look it from today's perspective this is literally piracy but in those days here people actually risked a lot to even have this book at home. So it's incredible how the legacy of Jim is travelling all over the world and is inspiring people all over the world even in places where it was forbidden. :) P.S.I bought the book from Amazon wherever they started shipping to Bulgaria, now I'm ordering once or twice a year this book, the Syncopation, Stick Control and 4 Way Coordination for my students.
@@GlobalDrumming I'm watching your "Stories from Fam" half a day and would really like to thank you for the great inspiration! :) I'm coming to the Lab Camp in Greece this September and I'm so looking forward to seeing you live Sir! It will be an honour!
