    Awesome video. I have struggled with my flip turns till I watched this video a few times. Feel free to pause the video at the crucial points and focus on getting the 2 main positions perfectly in practice( the triangle before the flip and the sitting position at the wall). Once both positions are achieved the flip becomes easy. Thank you Mellisa for such a great video, I highly recommend it even for advanced swimmers who can improve their times....

    I will be showing your video to my JV swimmers to help them perfect their turns. Thanks for pointing out the mistakes and also explaining how to correct them. Well done Melissa.

    this is one of the best training videos I have seen yet. The comments from the instructor are insightful and superb and video is just perfect along with the comments (something others find it very difficult to synchronise). I guess that I cannot thank enough

    This was very helpful! The still shot w/ lines drawn at 0:12 helped me more with flip turns than anything else I've seen on TH-cam. I now remind myself, "find your ankles before you flip your legs" and it made everything much easier. Thanks. :)

    Can I just say that you are like 150 times better than my swim coach? And that's using his own words. "GOOD THAT WAS 150 TIMES BETTER!" I'm so tired of hearing that and not knowing what I did wrong. You're awesome for showing the correct way and mistakes and how to fix them, 'cause it turns out that I was doing the turtle and staying on my stomach and that's why it wasn't working

    Very useful. Thank you. Will try them out tomorrow. I seem to have a problem keeping myself straight - when I try flipping in the middle of the pool I come up facing anywhere but the front. Any advice to keep myself from twisting during the flip?

    I think that fins would help you during the approach to give you more speed. Pushing off the wall with fins is a bit more challenging if your fins slip on the wall. However, give it a try and see what you think.

    • @1houndgal
      @1houndgal 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Using short fins, you get better control and balance if you use the fins correctly and have good technique/form, etc.

    • @1houndgal
      @1houndgal 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I also start to accelerate when I am about at the ten yard line. This give more inertia (more speed/energy to bounce off the wall (which means more energy to finish your lap.
      Also. You should mention that the swimmer should be watching the bottom of the pool during stroke. Bobbing head up to spot the wall causes drag/loss of soeed/energy. Use the T at the bottom for your figuring out when to do your flip.
      Arm placement on flip turns is also involved in getting into a good streamline to save some of that energy you get doing your flip and kicking off the wall.
      Another thing to use to get great flip turns is to think of the wall as a hot potato and get off the wall as fast as possible but with using good technique to avoid "burning your feet" by staying on the wall too long.
      There is so much involved to doing flip turns, but it is so worth it for lap swimming.

    Finally managed to re-find this video after many searches!
    This is the best video on flip turn in my opinion. I'm discovering now I think I'm not keeping my legs straight long enough.
    Do I keep the legs straight and horizontal until I fell the "snap" of the turn?

  • @aroundandround
    @aroundandround 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Melissa, thank you for this incredibly useful video. I've been practicing flip turns for the last week using it.
    Could you suggest a tip or a mental cue in order to keep hands still? I tend to flap my hands and can feel the resistance against my palms when upside down. Although I've reduced it by consciously trying to avoid it, it's still not gone and feels like an involuntary reflex. Should I try to touch my feet with my palms while turning (like in your opening shot) to avoid flapping?

    • @1houndgal
      @1houndgal 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes. But get a pair of short swimming fins. You can get a great workout using short fins.

    My problem is I've tried doing somersaults FROM the wall as part of my drills, and at the same time letting my legs come in straight out rather than bending them right away. It HAS improved my flip-turns, but I feel that maybe my oh-so-present belly gets in the way of a tighter tuck (I DO do dryland exercises, but perhaps not enough). Relaxation is another thing I'm integrating more (and again) into my sets, whilst applying proper technique - and NOT thinking too much.

  • @GregStew
    @GregStew 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Hmmm, thanks. I think you said it's a mistake to push off on your back. However at the beginning where you demo the correct way, it looks like you're on your back when you push off. Am I seeing wrong anyone??

    • @jasonlin5916
      @jasonlin5916 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Gregory Stewart I think it is a mistake to push off *totally* on your back. If you watch the swimmer at 0:27 carefully, she was already twisting her back.

    • @melissadhubley
      @melissadhubley  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Gregory Stewart Xiaojie Lin is right. I think you can see in the video that pushing off flat on your back makes it very hard to rotate from your back to your side (and then onto your stomach). You plant your feet on the wall while on your back, but then start to rotate one hip up so that you're already on your way to rotating to your side as you push off. I do think it's easier to see than to explain, but hopefully that was clear. Thanks for watching.

    Awesome video. Thank you. It really helped!

  • @melissadhubley
    @melissadhubley  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Your hands flapping probably has to do with trying to keep your balance during the turn. If you're not turning quickly enough or if you're making one of the three mistakes from the video, your body will start to sink and you'll need to use your hands to try and keep your body where you want it to be. Yes, keeping your legs straight for longer as in the opening shot will help. Speeding up the turn may help as well, and pushing up immediately upon your feet touching the wall. Good luck!

    Any other specific tips and/or drills I could do to improve a tighter tuck, thus a straight streamline (I've done mid-pool flips/somersaults 3-4 in a 25 [I currently swim in a 25m pool], that previous somersault drill I just mentioned, and some other ones)??

  • @melissadhubley
    @melissadhubley  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    It is a little confusing. After the somersault, you begin pushing your feet against the wall. During this push, start to rotate one hip up while staying in a tight streamline. If you're struggling, it might help to think about rotating your feet about 30 degrees before pushing off. When that becomes comfortable, you can get off the wall faster by rotating your hip as you're pushing instead of thinking about foot placement.

    Sorry you had such a bad reaction to the video. When someone is learning how to do a flip turn, they often get stuck on their backs like in the video. I think if you looked closely at Michael Phelps' flip turn, you'd see that his hip is already rotated so he's not flat on his back when he pushes off.
